Possibly the best (commercially made) cookie ever?
15OK, so if your Aldi has these you HAVE to get some! You have to like coffee, but I would rate these better than any oreo or oreo-like cookie, regardless of brand or flavor.
That’s my opinion, with which you have a right to incorrectly disagree.

So I started this with my phone the wrong direction and decided to finish the post and add the picture later. Now regret that decision because the post pic is wrong!
First world problems…
@ybmuG

/giphy no regrets
@Ignorant

/giphy tearful thanks
@ybmuG
Not sure what is wrong about it…?
@chienfou that would be because @ignorant fixed it!

So the Benton’s Latte Crème
is, in your opinion, the world’s best commercially made cookie?
@Kyeh

@ybmuG
Nearest Aldi’s store is
418.43 mi. from me.
@Kyeh So a day trip, then…
@ybmuG I’m one of the few people who actually doesn’t like Oreos - or I should say I just find them boring. So even coffee-flavored Oreo type cookies don’t sound worth the drive but I sure do wish Aldis would come farther west.
@Kyeh @ybmuG
You could walk there from here!
Come to my house Kyeh, we have one less than a mile away!
@Kyeh @ybmuG We have one in San Diego (too far for us to drive) and there’s one opening up closer (that’s within driving distance) in a couple of months.
@Kyeh @ybmuG i refused to eat oreos until I was 23. My sister brought a package when i delivered my first born.
So after 25 hours of not being able to eat and the euphoria of giving birth… i ate oreo cookies. I’ve been in love with them since.
@mbersiam @ybmuG Interesting! I just find them so boring and not worth the calories.
@lisaviolet @ybmuG That figures - they just skip right over CO and head for CA.

We do have Trader Joe’s, and these cookies are my favorite there:
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @ybmuG
I like the TJ’s Triple Ginger Snaps
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @mike808 definitely! Actually taste like ginger, instead of molasses cookies that someone waived some ginger over.
@lisaviolet @mike808 @ybmuG
I’ll have to try those.
@Kyeh I didn’t know we had Trader Joe’s here! Closest to me is in Boulder, but we do get over there every so often.
@Pony Sadly, Colorado’s dopey liquor laws mean we don’t get the wine deals.
@Kyeh I don’t like wine at all, so that doesn’t bother me.
@Kyeh @Pony
That’s truly a bummer. They carry an Amarone that is amazing…
@chienfou @Pony
I don’t even drink much, it would just be nice to be able to get what shoppers in other states get. Meanwhile our Whole Foods gets to have a fully stocked wine shop; very expensive, of course!
Your opinion is, in this instance, entirely correct.
@mossygreen

@haydesigner agree!!
@haydesigner Plus one for “can’t stand coffee”; neither the flavor nor the smell.
Right brand, wrong cookie.
@Nate311
Ahhh… I might have to agree with you, those girl scout knock off are my favorite! Just the thought of coconut and caramel makes my mouth water! OH MY GOD YUM!
@Nate311
Where are those from? Ive never seen those before? Those are my kind of cookies and I don’t really eat cookies. But I do have a bag of unopened boxes of Girl Scout cookies from previous years that I need to do something with. I bought them with the intent on using them for baking and never got around to it, I’m sure their still fine.
@Nate311 @Star2236
As we know around here, dates are only a suggestion
@Nate311 @Star2236 @ybmuG
I had a pack of GS Thin Mint cookies in a drawer at work that was about 5 years old. I tried one and it tasted just like the new ones. So they must fill them with some mighty powerful preservatives. The coconut Samoa-type cookies don’t age as well though, because the caramel gets very hard.
They might soften with a quick zap in the microwave.
@Star2236 They’re an Aldi store brand. I don’t know how long they keep. But if you find yourself at Aldi’s, their knock-off Thin Mints are also worth having.
@Nate311 @Star2236 @ybmug @Lynnerizer
They call them “Samoas” cuz you always be wantin’ Samoa dem.
@Nate311 None currently on hand at the local Aldi here.
@Nate311 Definitely the best deal going in Girl Scout knockoffs. Typically sold for somewhere around $1.39, they can’t be beat. One day I’m going to walk by a Girl Scout cookie table with a package of them in hand. When they ask if I want to buy some cookies I’m going to flaunt mine with, “No thanks, already have them.”
@Nate311 @Star2236 I’ve heard that Keebler makes a knockoff Samoa that’s good. I haven’t tried them, so I can’t confirm.
@Nate311 @Star2236
the knockoff tagalongs (chocolate peanut butter) are pretty damn good too!
@Nate311 @Star2236 @ybmuG
only trouble with these if they go TOO far out of date is the oils in the coconut can go rancid.
@chienfou @Star2236 @ybmuG I’ve never been the sort to Not eat the cookies before they expire.
@chienfou @Nate311 @Star2236 @ybmuG
I once had a Snickers bar sitting on my desk for about a week; one coworker was so exasperated by that! She said “How can you not eat that??” I don’t know, I just wasn’t in the mood.
@chienfou @Kyeh @Star2236 @ybmuG
@chienfou @Nate311 @Star2236 @ybmuG only if they get enough air to go rancid. If it’s sealed. limited supply of oxygen. I stand by all dates on food products are BS.
If it smells off don’t eat it. Otherwise…
Obviously ignoring botulism which is a anerobic but still your nose knows. If you can’t smell… Be a little more careful
@lisagd @Nate311 @Star2236 Dollar General store brand knockoff (Clover Valley, I think) Samoas were the winner of closest to the real thing in a head to head taste off I did about a dozen years ago. The Keebler ones were inferior in taste. Clover Valley had the taste down and only a slightly less crispy cookie than the real GS Samoa. The packaging leads me to believe the Clover Valley may be white labeled by the same bakery that does the Little Brownie Bakers GS cookies.
I do not have an Aldi here to add to the list, but the Benton packaging is more like Keebler than Little Brownie Bakers.
Also, Dollar Tree fake Thin Mints are made by the same GS bakery. The actual cookies are white/light instead of brown inside the fudge coating, but the flavor is very close. Can’t beat 'em for $1.
@djslack @lisagd @Nate311
Man I need to start looking at what the dollar tree has to offer.
@djslack @lisagd @Nate311 @Star2236
Be careful though. Because the above post was about dollar general, not Dollar tree. And yes, their version of Samoas are very tasty.
@unksol
I agree. Light and air are the Nemesis of oil products. However I have found that even a fully sealed package has enough air in it that over time the coconut will still get an off taste. (Though cookies never last that long at OUR house, we did have that experience with a package bought by my vegan daughter that sat around until we came to visit her way past the date) However as you mentioned the vast majority of best by dates, have a HUGE error factor built in.
The weirdest ones to me are when oil products starts to saponify, then has a weird “soap” off taste…
@chienfou it’s about both. DT thin mints are legit and also look like they might come from the same bakeries.
@chienfou technically the plastic packaging generally used is not air tight. air can seep through
That’s why if you really store it long long term in like a disaster bucket you might use an oxygen absorber.
Im sure there must be study’s of the various leek rates of plastic.
Is there a study of my chip bag? If there is and it was published that would be dangerously close to setting data for experation dates?
I just hate when a partner looks at the date and throws it in the trash. Maybe we should not allow dates at all unless you get the usda to test it. But then the law suits we didn’t know things are.
…
@chienfou @djslack @Nate311 @Star2236 Thanks; i didn’t notice that.
@unksol
Back in the mid-70’s I had a Dutch roommate that travelled to Europe with his girlfriend. They did a camping tour of several countries and one day Eric asked what happened to the piece of cheese (Brie or Camembert if I remember right) he had been purposefully ‘aging’ and she said she threw it out because it was gray, smelly and moldy! That was pretty much “the last straw” in their relationship and he sent her packing.
@djslack
my bad…

/giphy mea culpa
@djslack
Wait… WTF is THAT?
@djslack

@chienfou I was going to say I might be in her side for that one. I don’t go there. But what you did at the end of this idk.
/giphy Can’t stand coconut.

@blaineg
taste or texture?
@chienfou Taste mostly, but also texture.
I prefer the Benton’s Chocolate Chip to Chips Ahoy.
@lehigh

/giphy I agree
Challenge accepted!! I have 3 Aldi locations within 10 miles of me. I will search these out & prove you right or wrong this weekend.
If Ukraine survives, and you ever get to try their Kresko tubular cookies, your opinion is likely to change. Those are the incarnate platonic ideal of what an Oreo would dream of being if it could.
@werehatrack Like these?

Have to say I got a chuckle out of the cookies disclaimer below…
But if I cancel the cookies, can I still get the cookies?
@werehatrack Oh wait, you said “tubluar” - like these

And they come in “Black”!

We have an Eastern European deli and café in town and they carry a lot of items you can’t get anywhere else. I’ll have to check them out.
@werehatrack Love their commercials!
@ybmuG Kresko Black, those are the ones.
Korean Oregon thins. Ftw
@Cerridwyn I assume you mean “Oreo Thins”? Like these?

@ybmuG
. You got to love auto correct
@Cerridwyn @ybmuG
I wondered about that!
What’s different about the Korean ones?
@Kyeh @ybmuG
One of the biggest things is that it is not quite as sweet the cookie part that is but it’s still very chocolate. They’re also a kind of almost a tiny bit smaller than the American sense. A friend and I managed to get our hands on a Box of the Korean ones and a Box of the American ones it is the same flavor so we actually had a comparison and we’re all in my office at the time actually like the Korean once more
@Cerridwyn @ybmuG
Interesting; I bet I’d prefer the Korean ones too.
Are they consistently stocked? Aldi’s has alot of on and off good stuff. I normally go to Kroger or Walmart which are ~10 minutes each way. But if I’m going to Menards/Lowe’s/home Depot 30 to 40 minutes for a deal there’s an Aldi’s either direction. I try to alot time to swing in
@unksol they were an Aldi Find here. Were here, gone, back again. Just looked and they’re gone again.
@ybmuG eh, have to look when i have one of the long trips. I’ll admit I don’t usually go looking for sandwich cookies.
I’m not a big coffee fan but I’m a huge fan of the Benton Oreo knockoffs. Of all the pseudo-Oreos, they’re far and away my favorite. My buddy and I often end up bringing a bag each on weekend trips. We should probably start talking about what snackages we’re bringing before we actually go.
The Trader Joe’s Oreo knockoffs are good too, but why the hell isn’t Nutter Butter everyone’s greatest cookie ever?
@zinimusprime Because it just isn’t. </clarkson>
@werehatrack Blasphemy!
@werehatrack @zinimusprime
Nutter Butter cookies are one of the reasons I visit the bloodmobile!
@zinimusprime these are the ones I love

I’m also weirdly surprised how people are “finding” Aldi’s
You mean that cash only store we constantly went to as a kid were there were no bags but if you were smart you just pick the best looking empty box off the shelf and that is your “bag”
@unksol they’ve improved considerably over the years. They take cards and of course no one provides bags any more but they do sell them. Their merchandising has improved a bit, but still a fair bit of pallets of the larger, heavier items (soda, water, flour, sugar, milk) vs. putting them on shelves. Not as many choices as the grocery stores, but with a few exceptions, i find that a benefit. And some things are in fact better. Like the Savoritz version of Cheez-its.
If it all adds up to getting what i need for 20-30% less, I’m all in.
@ybmuG I’ve noticed. And they get those special items in now and then that are seasonal. Plus other stuff. Their wine is supposed to be good. Etc.
I wish I had one close but they are not new. They are expanding/adapting so. I get people are treating it that way. But it’s still a little weird. To me it’s always been
@unksol With food prices soaring over the last couple of years, I suspect there’s a bit of “well, honey, maybe we should check out that discount place that we make fun of your sister for going to…” All of a sudden, it’s not so much of an embarrassment to be seen coming out of an Aldi.
@ybmuG I’m sure there is some of it just being a new store and finding out they have some good stuff. Possible loss leaders . I’d happily have one but the 10 mile town is 10K people. they aren’t building one. When going father afield eh. They are common.
Embarrassment? I don’t understand that. In the line of I don’t think people know who I am
@unksol @ybmuG I think a lot of it is that people that know about them are just delighted to see them pop up in their area finally. I know that’s the case for me…
@chienfou @unksol I’m sure that’s a lot of it. My comment was likely more a result of coming from the home of Wegmans where we have a saying: “In Rochester you know your social standing by which Wegmans you shop at.” Aldi has been here a long time. I have heard people pooh-pooh the thought of shopping anywhere other than Wegmans as “less than”. When Aldi came, they were much less sophisticated than they are now and I think a lot of people wrote them off as a “discount store for the poor” and that image stuck for them. More recently I have talked with a lot of people that have said they just started shopping there, mainly for the savings, but they’ve discovered that they really like the products, the service and the simpler experience.
@chienfou @ybmuG I mean we were def there for the discounts when I was a kid. And college. Can’t shame me for being a cheap bastard. Especially when I’m getting good stuff. Why I’m sad we don’t have one
Pretty sure my mother blames you for these being discontinued/sold out at most Aldi stores near us.
@mossygreen sorry about that
i have a secret stash I’ve hidden from our son, otherwise we’d be out too.
