@Bauminkorea@salcedo If they (and their contents) stayed 2D while stored, and popped up to 3D when opened, I’d buy as many as my credit card could grab.
Who the F thought it would be worthwhile to put leather handles on these tiny storage thingies? And who besides Meh would call these tiny storage thingies “bins”?
@phendrick@werehatrack one of my favorite Carlin bits. It’s quoted often in my house…mostly as I’m cleaning up all the shit…um…I mean stuff laying everywhere!
And despite the fact that we’ll be empty nesters in a few years, I still want to buy a bigger house to hold more stuff.
@k4evryng@phendrick When selling T-shirts at conventions, I ask if the buyer needs a bag, and if they do, I snag one from the pack, open it up, and say “And here’s your additional Place For Your Stuff.” (We do not automatically hand bags out, since over half of the customers don’t want one.)
@Pamela They don’t have to be. https://www.amazon.com/WEHUSE-Storage-Baskets-Collapsible-Rectangular/dp/B08LSN3RJX/
For example, these (15" x 12" x 10") are just $9 apiece and are just cotton and nylon. (Yeah, they don’t stand up as nice as the pictures, and they definitely don’t stack like the pictures. If you fill them with tossed clothing and lift, the bottom will sag.)
To be fair, I have seen boxes of this dimensional group at places like Target for more than $5 each, but that doesn’t mean that I would have bought them at that price. I suspect that part of what we’re seeing here is the relative cost of shipping containers full of air in smallish quantities, possibly increased by their inability to be collapsed into flat packs for economy of transportation. The details are not specific about that, but I think it might be mentioned if they could be collapsed for storage.
Too small for shoes unless you have a women’s size 7. Good for crafts, sewing but no where to label. SideDeal has larger wayyy larger and a good frame, prob good for sheets and linens towels.
Their snarky comment about “Buddy, if you’ve got so many Apple products you need storage containers to keep it organized, you’re in too deep”… these better be big 'cause I’ve got boxes, moving size boxes, of Apple ][plus and GS stuff going back to 1981. Software, hardware, accessories, Apple pamphlets and souvenirs from the CCS and Comdex shows… serious storage needed!
I’ve always wanted a small 2-dimensional box. I can open the lid, put my fishing pole in there, and then put the whole thing in my back pocket. What a deal.
@sdansmith What you need is a ‘foldbox’*. From Robert Heinlein’s Glory Road:
“Rufo’s baggage turned out to be a little black box about the size and shape of a portable typewriter. He opened it. And opened it again. And kept on opening it and kept right on unfolding its sides and letting them down until the durn thing was the size of a small moving van and even more packed.”
This is absurd bait and switch counting on people not reading the full description. An 8 x 5 INCH container is not a “storage bin” by any reasonable definition.
@ekyles@werehatrack since I happen to have the measuring tape in my room (no dirty thoughts) I popped into the bathroom to check the length of one. Looks like it is just under 5". In the packaging it would be just over 5" So the tampon could be stored either vertically or horizontally in this box.
I made the assumption that ekyles wanted to store applicator tampons. Applicator-less tampons are even shorter, so they would be fine as well.
@ekyles@werehatrack the width of 3.5? Likely, but wouldnt you take them out of the outer packaging for ease of access if you are putting them in a container?
At least thats what I do (my sister, my office, etc). The individually wrapped units come out of the box into the container that usually sits close to the toilet.
@ekyles@tinamarie1974 The stated dimensions of 8x5 are clearly length and width since they ship collapsed. With that to work from, the height (outside) or depth (inside) would be no more than 3.5" when unfolded into use. Applicatorless ones could stand up in that, but not the others. I think these were really designed to be recipe card files for 3x5 cards. That’s what they look like to me, anyway. (And It would explain why they ended up here, since the demand for file storage for that kind of physical media is waning with the tendency to store everything electronically in that area. Just the same as everywhere else.)
@ekyles@tinamarie1974@werehatrack Oh, good grief - I seriously doubt that anyone is really interested in how many stupid tampons these things hold - it was a dumb rhetorical question that certainly wasn’t worth this much pondering!
@ekyles@werehatrack it doesnt state the height and I’m not going to guess and have someone mad at me if they get something smaller or bigger than expected, but you do you.
That said, in my experience tampons are generally stored laying down in a container of some sort. Hard to store vertically since they dont have a good flat surface (rounded tip) They could still be stored in the box vertically though even if it was 3.5" tall they just wouldnt be able to use the lid.
The basket on the back of my toilet is about 3" high, works beautifully and has done so since I moved in here 7 years ago. Its long enough I can even fit pads and liners. Fancy stuff!
Do you store them differently at your house?
Also, I really dont think ekyles really cares. I think they were making an off the cuff political statement that you decided to mansplane for some reason.
@ekyles@tinamarie1974 actually, before it was edited, it was very explicitly political. The edit made it look like a serious question, so I decided to toss in an answer. I didn’t actually expect it to go beyond that.
And around here, because of the proclivities of the cats, all such things are kept in tightly closed drawers. A basket on the back of the toilet would be on the floor and scattered in a matter of minutes. We would still be finding some of them months later under the bed and other furniture.

think all my Meh stuff will fit in these.
8" x 5"?
Are the images misleading and these are actually 2D?
@Bauminkorea Maybe they’re just wall decals?
@Bauminkorea @salcedo If they (and their contents) stayed 2D while stored, and popped up to 3D when opened, I’d buy as many as my credit card could grab.
Only Meh would give 2D measurements for a 3D box.
@hchavers must be poor depth perception
@hchavers @salcedo Touché!
At 8" x 5", you need two boxes per pair of shoes
@bonnielauria You could always store the second shoe in the box that these ship in.
@bonnielauria @brennyn Maybe these are for your cufflink collection?
@bonnielauria @brennyn @phendrick Or earrings, for those of us who don’t do cufflinks…
@bonnielauria None of my shoes would fit in a box this small. (That’s why I have problems finding decent ones that I can afford.)
Who the F thought it would be worthwhile to put leather handles on these tiny storage thingies? And who besides Meh would call these tiny storage thingies “bins”?
Time to revisit this?
/youtube George Carlin stuff
@phendrick ^^^^^BEST RESPONSE POSSIBLE^^^^^

@werehatrack that is a perfect reply.
I bet the younger generation wouldn’t get it…but I sure would.
Aren’t these just cardboard with cheap fabric around it?
I’d consider it at half the price. $5 per seems expensive.
@goldnectar agreed, this seems to be the same price as Wayfair, Target, etc.
Bins? We’re a long way from April Fool’s Day!
The only materials listed are leather and linen. I find that hard to believe. Like @goldnectar I suspect the boxes are cardboard.
@Pamela Maybe all the way up to MDF, but yeah, heavy/thick “railroad board” or what the printing trade calls chipboard seems likely.
@Pamela They don’t have to be.

These are a mystery box with this information. Add these to the IRK bag because selling these alone ain’t gonna work.
Five dollars ? Nope nope nope.

@werehatrack one of the pics shows that the box folds up and can be stored in the lid. I still want to know the missing dimension.
@werehatrack I want boxes that can be folded flat for storage while full.
Too small for shoes unless you have a women’s size 7. Good for crafts, sewing but no where to label. SideDeal has larger wayyy larger and a good frame, prob good for sheets and linens towels.
You can’t tell me those “handles” aren’t bandaids.
The last picture of a guy sledding downhill in one of the bins makes me wonder - is Jason Toon still part of Meh? That’s kinda his kinda humor!

@duodec same!
We’re a bit odd though.

@sdansmith What you need is a ‘foldbox’*. From Robert Heinlein’s Glory Road:
@rpstrong @sdansmith Just make sure you don’t unpack your foldbox in the Homer Bailey House…
Moved a month ago lol. Thankfully I have a wonderful wife otherwise 99% of my stuff would still be in boxes
There’s a missing dimension. 8" x 5" x ? They’d be ok for small stuff, but still - $5 apiece?
This is absurd bait and switch counting on people not reading the full description. An 8 x 5 INCH container is not a “storage bin” by any reasonable definition.
How many tampons will this hold? [edited to remove political reference.]
@ekyles The box is too shallow to load them standing on end, so probably 30-45 depending on the packaging and the type.
@ekyles @werehatrack since I happen to have the measuring tape in my room (no dirty thoughts) I popped into the bathroom to check the length of one. Looks like it is just under 5". In the packaging it would be just over 5" So the tampon could be stored either vertically or horizontally in this box.
I made the assumption that ekyles wanted to store applicator tampons. Applicator-less tampons are even shorter, so they would be fine as well.
@ekyles @tinamarie1974 The boxes are almost certainly about 3 1/2 in deep, not five.
@ekyles @werehatrack the width of 3.5? Likely, but wouldnt you take them out of the outer packaging for ease of access if you are putting them in a container?
