E. I don’t like it and don’t drink it.
I don’t do soda - period.

Interesting fact: I learned that soda and pop are different, though similar, things. Soda comes from the fountain, pop in a can or bottle. (Back then, glass bottles)
@IWUJackson
That makes sense. You get soda from the soda fountain, and you get a “pop” when you open a can or glass bottle of the stuff.
/giphy tmyk
@eonfifty @IWUJackson Sorry, but it’s fountain pop in these parts… even says so on receipts from Casey’s.

Coke Zero. I don’t care if it’s not a choice. It should be. Just Coke Zero.
@jrwofuga
So that would be A?
@eonfifty No. Coke Zero.
@eonfifty @jrwofuga
I think the “diet” part of the poll is what is throwing you for a loop…
A
I try to stay away from chemical foods and drinks. That includes diet sodas and sodas with HFCS… Every now and then I might have a bit, but it’s pretty rare for me. I’m content with my all natural alcohol…
@shahnm
D.
@eonfifty :“Every so often” way overstates it. I’m talking maybe once or twice a year…
@shahnm
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It’s not absolute. Close enough.
B diet Mt. Dew
B
D
B
E.
I don’t drink or eat anything with artificial sugars. It tastes gross to me.
I also read some study where they found out that if you drink diet soda, your body thinks that you got sugar and reacts accordingly with insulin and then it throws everything off because you didn’t have actual sugar.
F. I like it and drink it somewhat infrequently. They finally got the formula right with Coke Zero.
@PocketBrain
I’m going to call that D.
@eonfifty Okay okay, D. I just don’t have it on hand regularly. I had to pick some up recently, because I had none and tried to mix a Long Island Iced Tea. Had to use ginger ale as filler; believe me, it’s not as good.
@eonfifty I also do Diet Mt. Dew, but it’s not as good. Anybody remember Diet Code Red Mt. Dew?
B
G.
I rarely drink any pop at all. Maybe 3 times a year.
When it’s the only choice, I’ll drink a little Coke.
I prefer most anything else.
@daveinwarsh
E. Unless the Coke is Diet Coke?
E
E diet = nasty taste. I drink more regular than I should.
A or B depending on how well I’m doing at drinking a lot of water each day
Does Coors light count as soda?
@rtjhnstn It’s like making love in a canoe…
@rtjhnstn
Idts because it’s bubbles are self-made.
/giphy Coors light soda
@2many2no @rtjhnstn
/giphy I got that reference
I don’t like it, and I drink more than 3 cans and 3 bottles a day.
@walarney
A.
A. Diet Dr Pepper
D. If you’re counting Coke Zero.
@christinejudge
It counts.
E. Its nasty. I’d rather never drink a soda again until I died.
@givemeyoursoul How much will you drink after you die?
@ThunderChicken Good question! As I don’t believe in an afterlife, still none.
B
i like it, but suspect it’s not good for me (or anyone) so…somewhere between D and E. mehbe three times a year.
@pippakay
D.
@pippakay you are correct. It is not good for you
E. WTF is that aftertaste anyway. Pass me the Drano before a diet soda!
E
All I wanted was a Pepsi!!
E with a side of epinephrine. I’m allergic and it gives me migraines
Mostly E. Although DPSG used to have diet pops that tasted the most like regular pop. (They might still, but it’s been years since I’ve tried them.)
@msklzannie
I’m going to call that a D.
@eonfifty I suppose you could, but it’s probably been close to a decade since I last drank diet pop. I only did it then because the people whose house I was at (on various occasions) only had diet pop.
@msklzannie
In that case, I’ll change it back to E.
E lately. Tho not because I don’t like the taste. It’s just not a choice thing to consume.
Before that D
E
Could be a, b, or c depending on the day. I like it. I can go spans without any of it, or I’ll have several a day
@jnicholson0619
I’ll play it conservatively and call that C.
@eonfifty @jnicholson0619 I would call it a D since every so often doesn’t mean 1 every now and then. It could be a pallet of diet soda cans in a day every month.
D
For a while I was drinking it 3 times a day… but that stuff is poison so I quit. Pretty much only drink seltzer water now.
E
I’m one of those that is very sensitive to artificial sweetener. Can’t get after taste out of my mouth. Makes me drink more to get rid of it.
A can or two of sugar free Red Bull a day, some diet Dews, a diet Coke, every once in a while treat myself to a diet Dr pepper. So A for effort!
D. Occasional diet soda drinker when I feel like it.
I used to like it, but haven’t had a soda in years.
@OnionSoup
E.
@eonfifty oh, I like it, so not E for me… I prefer diet to regular soda… (Regular tastes too sweet)
I just try to avoid soda in general because not good for me. I used to drink it quite a bit in my 20’s so my internal organs are probably already pickled in it.
@OnionSoup
D?
C for me bay bee
The difference between B and C requires more long-term self-observation than I am willing to entertain, so…either B or C. But definitely Diet Dr. Pepper.
I have went from D to B since working from home during the pandemic. Never drink it at the office, and never drink it with a meal. But lately it’s almost a subconscious decision to grab one as I walk by the fridge. I think I may be in danger to drifting to A. Persuaded wife to agree to switch to the 6 oz cans to help slow me down.
There wasn’t a choice for “I like it, but I won’t drink it.” But if there was I choose that. Before I found out how bad artificial sweeteners were for you, I drank four Coke zeros a day, at least. I freaking love that stuff. But I haven’t had one for five years.
D. Only occasionally when I am out and about and the impulse cooler at the checkout stand tempts me. Usually when I am tired and want the caffeine. Maybe 6x a year? I always feel guilty when I do, it is so bad for you!
G. I like it, but can’t drink it anymore, due to intestinal disorder, and fear of removing the paint from my inner tubes.
A Diet Coke is the breakfast, Lunch and Afternoon refresher of champions!
@adwaller it is darn delish
@adwaller
A.
B-Cish
I love it. I don’t drink it too often now because our mayor imposed a soda tax a while back that makes soda at least twice as expensive In Philly. Since I would only buy soda on sale, it is now unreasonably expensive. Most of the time, the sales tax is higher than the sale price of the soda. I would load up on soda when I visited my sister but the pandemic screwed all that up. Originally, the tax was supposed to be on sugar sweetened beverages only but they changed it to any sweetened beverage, including diet beverages.
Then they passed another thing that allow fireworks to be sold in Philly since last year. So now we have to listen to the fucking fireworks pretty much every fucking day of the year. Fuck mayor Kenney.
@ponagathos
D.
And is that fireworks law the kind that says you can buy them legally, but you can’t light them off? Ohio has a law like that.
@eonfifty Yes it is that kind of stupid law. It states you were allowed to buy and own them in Philly but you are not allowed to set them off in Philadelphia streets. My guess is about 1% of people that buy them stick to that rule.
E
I’m an E. I hate the aftertaste of the fake sweeteners.
@ChompyGator I did too at first but I got used to it. Now I can’t stand sugar sweetened soda.
You can pry my Diet Coke out of my cold, dead, eating disordered hands.
(Mostly recovered now, but all I can drink is diet at this point. Full sugar soda is terrible).
@TheJettSet27
Is that an A?
@eonfifty for sure.
A. I don’t drink coffee or alcohol. I’m a soda, water, or milk drinker. I used to drink regular soda when I was young. But now that I’m too old to burn that many calories in a day, I go with a diet soda. Coke Zero to be exact and a lot of it.
@Club33NOS I was in the same boat until last week. For some insane reason I decided to quit cold turkey (was drinking 2-3 liters of Coke Zero per day). No major withdrawals but I do crave it bad
C. I’ve lost 160 lbs. on a low carb diet, so a diet soda is a treat for me.
@shalynrut
Congratulations!
@shalynrut Congrats! I lost about 150 pounds over the past few years but I’ve now have hit a plateau. I think I still have about 50 pounds to go.
@ponagathos that is still very impressive. Congratulations on your weight loss!
@njfan thanks
C and sometimes B. Aldis generic tastes exactly like Diet Coke to me and it’s only 2 dollars for a 12 pack
Diet soda is awful. I rarely drink soda but when I do it’s not gonna be that gross stuff.
Also having a 5lb CO2 tank means any liquid can become a soda.
@LordSalem
E.

A++
I was A-B, but recently switched to flavored seltzer water.
@ThunderChicken
I’ll make that an E.
@eonfifty Except that I do still like it and drink it, just a lot less. Answer F I guess.
I like the taste of regular soda better than diet, but regular gives me a headache so I drink diet.
@t0nyc0tt4m
How much do you drink?
@eonfifty when I have it, 3 or 4 cans a day. A lot, I know, but I rarely buy it when it’s over 30 cents a can.
@t0nyc0tt4m
I’ll call that an A.
“E” for me, never. Rarely drink soda or pop, maybe a Virgil’s Root Beer for a treat…
I am literally the clinical trial for the effects of Diet Coke on the human body. Full disclosure - I am in fact diabetic and fat (just in my gut) and I’m pretty sure it’s the Diet Coke.
@adwaller
Does that mean you drink a lot of it?
E!!!
E
Fake sugar gives me a headache and dizziness with whatever type of food/drink it is used in.
B, but my wife is an A, so then I stop buying it because it goes too fast/gets too expensive, so then D.
D) never buy it for the house but will occasionally drink one (or several) at work… if we are busy and I don’t have time to drink coffee while it is still hot, or make some flavored water to drink.
The poll is closed.

This was a hastily made poll inspired by the discussion of aspartame in this post: https://meh.com/forum/topics/pepsi-zero
Because it was created so quickly, choice B was worded incorrectly, and I believe this error may have resulted in diminished precision regarding respondents’ diet soda consumption. Response B could have been better written as, “I enjoy it and drink two to three cans or bottles a day.” As it was presented, it’s possible some respondents overestimated their diet soda consumption. Also, I should have left out, or made a separate poll, for whether the respondent loved, enjoyed, liked, was ambivalent about, or just didn’t like diet soda.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Beyond that, I’m interpreting this data by combining the responses for A, B and C as a group called Regular Diet Soda Drinkers, or RDSDs for short, and creating groups Occasional Diet Soda Drinkers (ODSDs) and Non Diet Soda Drinkers (NDSDs) from the responses to choices D and E, respectively. Doing this makes a pretty graph that looks like an inverse bell curve if you look at it sideways:
RDSD:

ODSD:

NDSD:

As to aspartame, I think it might be like peanuts: Peanuts aren’t nuts, and aspartame isn’t sugar. Some people are really allergic to peanuts and can die, but most people aren’t. I think some people might be really allergic to aspartame and can die or get sick, but I think most people won’t or don’t. I don’t know if anyone is looking in to that.
Thanks to all who participated!
/giphy this was fun
Never sugar free, and always as a mixer. Usually ginger ale, tonic water, or cane sugar cola. I don’t like the artificial aftertaste. Occasionally an energy drink if there situation demands.
@j37hr0
Thanks for your response which I would have scored as an E. Unfortunately, you responded after the poll had closed, which is a double-bummer because your response would have resulted in a perfectly balanced inverse bell curve graph.
