So I just finished the first book by my favorite podcaster (Mike Dunkin The Storm before the storm) he did The history of Rome and is doing the Revolutions podcasts.
So tell me your favorite podcasts ? Which ones do you listen to?
I was listening to news and politics podcasts since 2016 (election fever), but then I had my fill for a while. Politics started to nauseate me.
So I needed something different.
BETTER OFF UNDEAD
podcast commenced in I think 2012.
The hosts are all writers, and this was supposed to be a horror/sf/fantasy fan podcast.
But they can’t stay on topic. But they’re funny without necessarily trying to be funny, so I don’t care. I’m addicted to them.
Warning, they mention their own books some. But they make fun of their own writing, as often as not.
They also are trying to have interesting guests. So far (I’ve listened to I think 20-something podcasts?) they’ve had Hugh Howie, and they are after the cast, “crew”, and writer/director of the Birdemic films (strong contenders for worst movies ever).
After a while (like 4 podcasts), they admitted they couldn’t stay on topic. Eventually (after some years), they decided to continue within a new, more accurately-titled podcast, and started this one, with a more descriptive title: WORST PODCAST EVER
This new podcast is basically a continuation of the first one. They are currently creating new podcasts.
The three writers/podcasters are all intelligent introverted geeky homebody writers and parential types who almost never go outdoors if they can help it, and are fascinated by the cooler ends of pop culture. They are good talkers.
The hosts are:
Johnny B Truant (pen name)
Sean Platt
David W Wright
If you like this sort of stuff, I would recommend starting at the beginning in 2012 or whenever with Ep 1 of the BOU podcast.
In the early podcasts the hosts were all over The Walking Dead weekly episodes. And so, though I knew it was a great show, they finally got me to start watching it, via Netflix.
(Well damn. It is a great show. But I’m 8 years late to the party, you all already knew that. I expected it to be great. I didn’t foresee the extreme excellence of the faded yellow-toned color saturations, astonishing acting, and amazing camera work, not that I know anything about any of that.)

I suppose I should make myself listen to something Heavy or Serious or Important or Theoretical or Rigorous.
If you like history, some other history podcasts (as well as much else of interest) are mentioned in Duncan’s Reddit Ask Me Anything session from I think 2013.
In particular, podcasts by Lars Brownworth, the In Our Time podcasts by Melvyn Bragg, and the British History podcast are mentioned in the AMA.
A short form one I’ve been digging lately is Mike Rowe’s “The Way I Heard It”. It’s kind of like a modern Paul Harvey in a little bit longer form and good for a light weekly 20 minute hit.
@f00l Do you have a particular iOS player you like? I haven’t found one I like yet. I have a great one on my kindle but I’ve found the kindle’s volume doesn’t go high enough for listening in noisy environments.
I just put up with it. And with LG Tone headphones. (no knockoffs).
Curiously, the LG Tone HBS-730’s (older version, and very cheap as refurbs) seem to have decent volume. Better perhaps than the more expensive newer ones.
Don’t waste money on expensive headphones, for podcasts. If they are great and near-audiophile, they don’t have the volume you need for spoken voice in noisy environments. Aim or cheap, loud, comfortable, easy to wear, will full controls.

Podcruncher also, and others.
If you have a sane number of podcasts loaded, Overcast or Pocket Cast.
Whichever interface you like.
But too many podcasts (more than 50 subscriptions), and they might freak out. Overcast, otherwise excellent, needs to keep the number of podcasts sane or it locks up.
If you have an insane number of podcasts loaded, Downcast can handle the database load without freaking out (tho it will freeze here and there for a bit), but the interface is a little antiquated.
Learn how to do playlists. Experiment.
Downcast gives you really fine playlist control.
I use downcast for political stuff because I have so many loaded that I wander among.
Other players are for specific interests.
Culture/history podcasts in Pocket Casts.
How-to podcasts in Overcast.
I just fell into this setup and it kinda works for me. But there might be better arrangements.
Volume:
I think the likely solution is to try louder headphones or earbuds, unless there is an iOS trick or app to boost volume. I don’t know if one.
Watch out about your hearing tho.
I stream everything. I don’t have an issue there and I don’t want more phone storage being eaten.
Even streaming all podcasts, the database/cache etc can eat up notable storage.
So keep an eye on phone storage and free space. The more, the better. At least a gig or two minimum.
Your phone will be much happier if it has more free space than that.

I like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: http://www.dancarlin.com/
I also like The NoAgenda Show:

(they are celebrating 10 years right now, so the most current ones may not be the best samples)
I like Military X-Files with Mack Maloney:

@f00l I have a bunch of books by Truant and Platt. I loved Unicorn Western. They also have a pretty cool newsletter.

I just talk to myself. Saves on subscription fees.
@Pavlov
Backup on the relaxation assistance for a min there.
Listen up. Podcasts are 99.9% free.
Use your smartphone. (but not the default ios podcast player, which sux.)
The podcasts you gotta pay for are done by a few professional comics and a few political assholes.
There are very few if those $ ones. Unless you are an enormous fan of someone, skip 'em anyway. Not worth it.
Ok back to your usually status now …

There’s a new behind-the-scenes horror thing starting at shudder.com called The Core.
I’m not a podcaster I am afraid…

@ELUNO
I think it is possible to be both a podcaster and afraid
Or neither.
Needn’t be either/or.
Could be neither. And have you tried both?
