@UncleEdZed Yesterday’s item was a receiver with Atmos capability, so it naturally follows somebody might want speakers with the receiver. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of pretty lights.
So these do the up? can they also do the down? also where would you put these in your living room area, you got your left-center-right, back left- back-right, now you got UP and DOWN…where do these even go?
Looks like these are designed to sit atop Pioneer BS22’s. I haven’t heard the ceiling reflect type of Atmos speaker but I can’t imagine they’re near as good as actual in ceiling speakers. They’d certainly be much easier to set up though.
@cjrhoades I’ve actually read about the reflecting speakers being better. I guess the sound disperses better on the ceiling, giving a bigger soundstage for the height channels.
I actually have the rest of the set these atmos speakers go to. If I got the separate deal for the receiver and these I could go 5.1.2 without too much hassle, but I can’t imagine it makes that much difference or most content even supports it.
My setup is already pretty nice too. Nothing like watching a movie like Fury and watching your cats freak out over high velocity shell fire.
My cat would sit on them immediately as he does our rear surrounds. That latter doesn’t matter so much as it’s just flat wood, but here he would be sitting on the speaker domes themselves!
Didn’t Andrew Jones play for the Braves? I’m not sure how that helps you engineer good speakers, but it’s worthless trivia, minus that it might explain why his name’s on the box.
And I think it’s spelled Andruw. DUH. Come on guys. Sheesh.
Most of the reviews at the Amazon link talk about stand-alone bookshelf speakers. I don’t think they relate to these toppers, which are designed to be used as supplemental speakers. According to the product manual the toppers can be damaged by low frequencies (below 180 hz).
@cjrhoades Correct. It’s not an issue if these atmos toppers are used for their intended purpose. I’m just cautioning folks who might be misled by the Amazon reviews praising the product as a general-purpose speaker. Those reviews are not for the toppers even though they are listed under them.
Oh I’m really hating you now Meh. It’s like the perfect speaker just for me…
I bought that Onkyo receiver a month or so ago, and bought the EXACT pioneer bookshelf speakers that these would sit on top of (I think they were $129/pr on Amazon). So these would be perfect, but my question is that I’m only running a 2.1 system at this point. I won’t be adding the center and rear speakers anytime soon (if ever), so is this even worth purchasing? I see that they’re a good deal, but not sure if they’re going to make any difference in the sound…
I only have a shitty Vizio soundbar, but since I bought yesterday’s receiver, I think I might end up getting these. I mean, I do intend to EVENTUALLY get a complete surround sound set up even though I virtually have nothing except for a 3 year old Vizio Soundbar which is of course NOT Atmos compatible. For only $74, these may (or very well may not) come in handy. I mean, like I said, I do plan on building (now an Atmos) setup from scratch so why not start with these? Especially since they normally retail for $200! Yeah? I dont know! Help!
@Bkmack bahaha. Yes. It was cheap and a minor upgrade from my tinny TV speakers. In fact, the sound bar cost around the price of these bad boys are going for right now. I think Im still gonna get these.
The Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers are awesome for the price, especially when you find them on sale. I do not need any speakers, and I bought (on sale)
Andrew Jones designed Pioneer Speakers
4 each - 1st gen center channel SP-C21
1 pair - 1st gen floor standing SP-FS51
4 pair - 1st gen SP-BS21 bookshelf (smaller bookshelf)
1 pair - 1st gen SP-BS41 Bookshelf (larger bookshelf)
1 pair - SP-BS22LR 2nd Gen bookshelf
I bought all of these when they were on super cheap sales, both online and B&M stores. (hint hint MEH!)
There are cheaper speakers, and better speakers, but when you can find these on sale, they represent a great value in low cost, high sound quality speakers.
I have sold (at cost) or given as gifts about half my inventory of AJ speakers.
@BuddTX I just bought some SP-BS22LR refurbs after I bought these add ons! Got a decent price on the refurbs! From what I was reading it seemed like spending the money for these add ons and the bookshelf speakers seemed like a good value especially since I dont have ANY surround sound speakers.
@itsherediatary NICE! I use the SP-BS22LR as my computer monitors, along with an old stereo. As nice as the 1st Gen AJ speakers are, the 2nd Gen (the ones you have) are even better.
Andrew Jones and his partner from Pioneer moved to ELAC
@BuddTX Awesome man! I use some Mackie CR-4’s as my computer monitors. Good! I’m so pumped now! Can’t wait to get my receiver and speakers set up when they come in! Cheers!
I looked at his signature models at ELAC and they’re just as awesome as his Pioneer sets if not better.
How could I not buy these seeing as I bought the receiver. A steal at $79. Over $100 less than at Amazon. I had another pair lined up to use with the wall brackets that came with them and attach the bracket to my current speakers and point them up. Now I don’t have to drill a few holes in them! These will sit right no top!
Andrew Jones speakers are excellent; however, how much material is actually Atmos coded right now? My guess is you’d have these great but specialized speakers and you’d rarely use them (for instance, if I listen in 2.1 instead of 5.1 my center and rear speakers aren’t even being used 90% of the time…adding two more speakers to be used only for movies —as opposed to music—seems kind of a waste unless one has the money, time and inclination to set up and try to blend 7 speakers.)
I just bought these… because I bought yesterday’s receiver. And then I promptly bought the SP-BS22LR somewhere else. I bet you tomorrow they’ll be on sale here. Just watch. I’m calling it.
Best fish tacos are at Don Bravo in Pacific beach, CA (San Diego) Sorry, I read too much of Toon’s write-up and became more interested in fish tacos than speakers. My wife would divorce me if I brought more speakers into the house. Bus she loves her some fish tacos from Don Bravo!.
So the idea is to buy a bottle on Tuesday so you can sip from it, sit down, and listen to your receiver on Wednesday … but only if you buy the speakers today?

I see a theme happening here.
Sounds right-- speaker Thursday …music to meh’s ears!!
Didn’t someone just yesterday ask for speakers??
Happy now?
@UncleEdZed i was just thinking about that! They need to ask for things more often.
@UncleEdZed but I wanted regular speakers not some shit that points up in the air
This was like a Twilight Zone wish granted
@Ignorant. Right on, they’re not even blue tooth, toothless, gummers of the speaker world.
@Bkmack if I wanted upward pointing speakers, I would just lay on the floor. I feel much better now that I got that of my chest.
@UncleEdZed Yesterday’s item was a receiver with Atmos capability, so it naturally follows somebody might want speakers with the receiver. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of pretty lights.
@PocketBrain i’ve been waiting for months for these to be on sale. But $74 is steal!
/giphy interesting
Off to buy some fish and tortillas.
@russellwilde please post the recipe when you have it perfected.
@wew How I fish taco … https://imgur.com/a/iFqj0
@russellwilde I think I recognize those fish filets. Sam’s Club?
@GLaDOS correct. I get the fish and slaw at Sams
I see what you did there meh, I see what you did there…
So these do the up? can they also do the down? also where would you put these in your living room area, you got your left-center-right, back left- back-right, now you got UP and DOWN…where do these even go?
@upbeatanime They sit on top your front L/R mains and reflect sound off the ceiling.
Too bad I haven’t owned an RCA cable in 10 years.
@mydrivec RCA? Those terminals take banana plugs or bare speaker wire.
@mydrivec Ummm…what? These use speaker wires…
@mydrivec you use standard 14 gauge speaker wire with these: http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=9436
@jbartus I stand corrected x3. Looked at it quick on my phone and it looked like RCA plugs. Where are my glasses?
Looks like these are designed to sit atop Pioneer BS22’s. I haven’t heard the ceiling reflect type of Atmos speaker but I can’t imagine they’re near as good as actual in ceiling speakers. They’d certainly be much easier to set up though.

/giphy A double header!
I’m going to set them on top of my BD 2500s and see what happens. We have vaulted ceilings, so this may be a total disaster.
Dammit this was exactly what you needed to do to finally make me buy the receiver via VMP last call. Brilliant move.
So you are supposed to add these to the Pioneer bookshelf set? Do we just wait and buy each piece separately on Meh until we have the complete system?
I actually have the rest of the set these atmos speakers go to. If I got the separate deal for the receiver and these I could go 5.1.2 without too much hassle, but I can’t imagine it makes that much difference or most content even supports it.
My setup is already pretty nice too. Nothing like watching a movie like Fury and watching your cats freak out over high velocity shell fire.

@alextse mute, crank the volume all the way, unmute, watch kitty violently relocate and never come back, catch breath after laughing.
These speakers are what’s up! Anyone who doesn’t buy these speakers are obviously not down with them.
Very tempting, anyone know how these work with the older versions of the speakers, specifically I have the SP-FS51-LR as the front L/R of my setup?
Didn’t Andrew Jones play for the Braves? I’m not sure how that helps you engineer good speakers, but it’s worthless trivia, minus that it might explain why his name’s on the box.
And I think it’s spelled Andruw. DUH. Come on guys. Sheesh.
@stinks Andruw Jones played for the Braves. He was their Dutch Treat.
Why do you do this to me? I just sank $265 into the receiver.
@tonylegrone They’re being nice. You didn’t have the Atmos speakers. Now you do!

@benf_dc The Atmos channels in movie soundtracks don’t contain any frequencies below 180hz so it’s not an issue.

/giphy I Need Answers!
@jayplus707 I’m not sure, but for under $100 I’m in for a pair to discover for myself. Worst case I’ll eventually fill out my setup.
They better sell a proper ceiling tomorrow that goes with these speakers.
I only have a shitty Vizio soundbar, but since I bought yesterday’s receiver, I think I might end up getting these. @itsherediatary . Go to your local flea market and part out the vizio sound bar. The vizio bar is also fairly good as replacement wiffle bat.
@Bkmack bahaha. Yes. It was cheap and a minor upgrade from my tinny TV speakers. In fact, the sound bar cost around the price of these bad boys are going for right now. I think Im still gonna get these.
I am going to put these on top of my SP-BS41’s… … See how that turns out.
[Now, these are the bomb. 4 of these in my home theater on the side walls. 4 toppers to finish the mid- tones and added high end… might put on top or maybe on the bottom of the SP-BS41’s? Who knows but… It Should work][1]

I have not heard these speakers, but I would think they would work well in a “traditional” rectangular room, with a flat, 8-10 foot ceiling.
If you have angled or vaulted ceilings, or a large room or rooms, (like living room-dining room, or great room), they may or may not work as well.
I also have found that I prefer direct sound to any kind of “reflected” sound, but that is my personal preference.
Also, I do not know about how I feel about Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
Is it the future of HT Sound, or is it the next audio version of “3D TV”?
Well shit, I would buy these if I had a Atmos capable receiver. Maybe pack them in with the Onkyo receiver next time?
@sircod use vmp last call on the front page to buy the receiver too!
@djslack I am VMP but not seeing last call. Is it still up?
@patti not after 6am ET
@djslack Damn, last call only goes until 6am. Was just about to buy it oo.

What is the benefit here as compared to just tipping my current speakers on their backs?
Noooo! Bad meh! I skipped the receiver from the other day because these were 200 everywhere. And now you do this to me?!?!
How could I not buy these seeing as I bought the receiver. A steal at $79. Over $100 less than at Amazon. @widijaz I imagine you could use them for height speakers for Dolby Pro Logic IIz or Audyssey DSX if your receiver supports those.

Got the receiver, doubt these will work with my 26ft vaulted ceilings, but I may eventually move the whole thing into the man cave, so I got them.
