Actually plantains and bananas are two different things in the same family. Plantains are more starchy, less sweet and best cooked. The best way to cook is dust with brown sugar and cinnamon, pan saute. So yummy!
@ironcheftoni Plantain chips are very mildly sweet and crunchy with relatively little or no banananess about them. They’re much better than some of the other snacks that have been on here in the memorable past.
@ironcheftoni@MrNews Yep. Platanos are a staple across the Caribbean, Central America, and much (if not all) of South America. The methods of preparation are many and varied.
Unfortunately I got them and tried them. Jackfruit citrus chili and plantain salt and pepper w/ olive oil. In your head it sounds like a good idea trust me i know but these are just not great. Jackfruit has a very strange aftertaste and is pretty off putting if you aren’t familiar with it. The plantains are definitely edible but only barely so. I think i ate one of each and will probably give the rest away.
FWIW, It looks like these are sweet plantains if that makes a difference for you. Sweet is in description and noted on some Amazon reviews. Salted sweet plantain chips are quite tasty, but not when it’s a surprise.
@Vee19 Yes, these have way too much (natural) sugar to be healthy. The olive oil/salted ones have 38 grams of carb, inclusive of 18g of sugar, in a 2.12oz bag. Plantain chips can also come from green (unripe) plantains, which these, evidently, do not.
@MrNews indeed. I’m Jamaican and they’re one of my favorite foods any way you slice it (heh), but no one should ever mistake them for a “healthy alternative.” There are “healthier” cooking options like baking or boiling but even the green ones are on the higher side, carb-wise and most carb conscious diets or meal plans say skip 'em. Why on earth did they add sugar? Sheesh.
@Vee19 They didn’t add sugar, these are just made from fully ripened plantains. A plantain, when green, is very starchy, with little natural sugar. Allowed to ripen until they are yellowish-brown, a lot of the starch is converted to sugar. Tostones, at least the ones I used to get in Puerto Rico, were usually made from green plantains. A ripened plantain has a higher sugar content, but still lower than the Cavendish variety, the typical “dessert banana” eaten throughout the US and Europe.
@CBL_No_More Raw jackfruit smells terrible when first sliced (or fully ripe and not yet sliced), but the rank stench does dissipate. Once that’s gone, the fruit is actually rather good. But most people who don’t live where it’s grown (and quite a few who do) judge it solely by its fresh-picked and/or fresh-stabbed/split/sliced/etc grossness. And yeah, that’s exceptionally putrid, though nowhere near as bad as a corpseflower.
@axemurderer You’re right, I was, and the two are closely related enough that there is a hybrid which has neither the flavor of jackfruit nor the stench of durian. And I’ve seen Asian grocers’ displays with a price sign calling them one of the two while the boxes, bags, etc had the other name on them. Now that I think about it, I have only seen actual raw durian sold frozen around here. Frozen and individually bagged or shrink-wrapped. Eh, jackfruit is still not going to make my top 300 snack list.
@hchavers If your gut is not acclimated, they’re moderately gassy for some. I’ve never had a problem as long as they aren’t fried in any of the oils that give me problems.
@hchavers Really depends on the variety. Bananas and plantains are so varied that even people with severe allergies to them can have certain varieties that don’t trigger the allergy. Not that I’d recommend they try, lol.
@axemurderer This may not be the right forum for you. We routinely post about random non sequitur things that shouldn’t be relevant or important to anybody. It’s part of living down to the name of the website…
@shahnm k, got it. i guess i’ll deactivate my account later. good job policing meh. i guess they’re better off not selling than selling to someone like me who isn’t a good fit for such an esteemed forum.
@axemurderer Fwiw, plantains (which are for sale) are very much related to bananas, which makes them an extremely relevant fruit.
I saw it as an open invitation to the forum for anyone to jump in with any knowledge or anecdotes about the plantain chips for sale today.
I felt it was an extremely good use of the forum. As I see it, it’s actually the primary purpose of the forum. Although I’m not in charge, I’d say the forum is for:
discussion about the product(s) for sale
jokes, fun or interesting stories, etc.
community conversations (shooting the breeze or whichever term is used in your neck of the woods)
Of course, anyone is allowed disagree with me on that.
This is worse than swallowing vomit!!! I like Plantain and this was just salted crap.
I wouldn’t even give this to my worst enemy.
I can’t believe I actually paid for this.
So can I just get my money back???
Dried jackfruit sounds like what you’d find in an old sock in a lonely teenage boy’s bedroom.
@warpedrotors ROFLMAO. Thanks for the non-unseeable image…
@warpedrotors Wish you hadn’t gone there… I will now forever hear the word “jackfruit” differently…
Jackfruit’s marketing and PR departments definitely choked in the naming phase.
@mehcuda67 Must. Not. Ask. What. They. Were. Choking.

@ironcheftoni @werehatrack We used to eat “tostones” as a side dish when I lived in Puerto Rico. They’re double fried, and are a tasty alternative to french fries. Here’s a semi-accurate recipe (they missed that the water bath between frying should be salted): https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16768/puerto-rican-tostones-fried-plantains/
@ironcheftoni @MrNews Yep. Platanos are a staple across the Caribbean, Central America, and much (if not all) of South America. The methods of preparation are many and varied.
@ironcheftoni @MrNews @werehatrack mofongo. Yes! Would never make it though. But so good.
60-67% carb, for those who track it.
That appears to be quite pricey for plantain chips.
@datruandi Yes, nearly a dollar an ounce for plantain chips is insane. So says every bodega in Philly.
Unfortunately I got them and tried them. Jackfruit citrus chili and plantain salt and pepper w/ olive oil. In your head it sounds like a good idea trust me i know but these are just not great. Margaritas?
@yakkoTDI
@yakkoTDI Nyet!
@werehatrack @yakkoTDI
Are you Russian?
Hmm Will you answer with a big DA DA!

Meh. Screw it, why not? Raya has made me want to try jackfruit jerky for a while, anyway. Besides, I’ve wasted more money on dumber ideas.

Okay, these are just disgusting. Unripe bananas (Plantains) and dried plantmeat (Jackfruit). Retail of $5 per package?!?! Urk.
@CBL_No_More @werehatrack are you thinking of durian? i don’t recall jackfruit smelling bad, just being annoying to cut/separate, due to all the latex
@CBL_No_More Plantains are not just “unripe bananas” lmao. You can ripen plantains all you want. Google is your friend
@axemurderer You’re right, I was, and the two are closely related enough that there is a hybrid which has neither the flavor of jackfruit nor the stench of durian. @CBL_No_More @werehatrack
I’ve never even heard of jackfruit or durian but the flavors alone that all of these come in just sound disgusting to me.
Banana chips cause too much flatulence. I wonder what its starchy cousin would do?
@hchavers If your gut is not acclimated, they’re moderately gassy for some. I’ve never had a problem as long as they aren’t fried in any of the oils that give me problems.

“Banana chips cause too much flatulence.”
you have problems.
@axemurderer Yeah. Banana chips make him fart. As problems go, that’s on the low end of the scale.
What about your problem? You know, the one where you call out people in the forums?
@axemurderer @Trinityscrew
Huh, I would have thought the axe murderer part would have been the more pressing question.
@axemurderer @macromeh @Trinityscrew And just how does one murder an axe? Plasma cutter?
@Trinityscrew right. because i randomly post about a completely irrelevant fruit that makes me fart on a product page about… not bananas.
and ffs, if someone is so bothered by bananas making him fart that he does this, yeah - one has mental problems.

@axemurderer What’s life like with absolutely no sense of humor, perception of gentle sarcasm, or ability to handle a friendly ribbing?
Shudder
Must be horrifying.
Anyway, here’s a parting gift for you:

you tell me, person who just replied to a post drenched in sarcasm that went missed.
@xobzoo TOMATOES CAUSE TOO MUCH FART
Most lighter colored dry fruits are treated with sulfites. Are these?
This is worse than swallowing vomit!!! I like Plantain and this was just salted crap.

@Barberousse head over to meh.com/support to let them know. I’m not sure if you’ll get the refund, but that’s the place to start.
