Phone LED Screen Burn-in ? I don't recognize the icon that's burned in.
5I have a Samsung Galaxy S7. I’ve had it about 16 months and I bought it new. Recently, I noticed the screen is beginning to burn in. However, I don’t recognize the icon that’s burned in. It’s a chat bubble. I’ve never seen it before. I have checked all of the apps that I use, and all of the icons on the desktop – none of them come close. It looks like a chat bubble with 3 dots below it.
Anyone else having issues?

I’d say it’s possessed. You should probably heed the emerging message.
Facebook?
Probably the ellipses when someone is typing

@medz It’s a similar icon to that one – here’s the thing. I have never seen it on my screen before.
Curious. If it’s “burned in” doesn’t that mean the same image was on the screen for a long time and that’s why the image is always there now? If that’s the case, the icon you see should be a common app that you’ve been using since it burned in your screen. How can it be a burned in image and you not recognize it?
@cengland0 @cengland0 thank you. that’s kinda the point of this discussion. I have never seen the icon before and it’s not in any of the apps that I use.
I hate to be one that prods the conspiracy theory monster, but is it possible Samsung is tanking my screen somehow?
Can you post an image?
Try sticking it in the freezer overnight. Used to work with the old CRT screens.
@Mehrocco_Mole Better yet, degauss it.
I believe this is a potential downside to AMOLED displays - more likelihood of screen burn in.
You might try the app described in the video below:
I know that burn-in is common on AMOLED displays, but it should only be happening with things I use commonly. For example, the task bar at the top of the screen or icons on my home screen, or Facebook (never used that app) if I used it and left it open all the time. It’s in the lower left corner of the screen with my phone is up-right, and there are very few apps that I even use with my phone oriented that way. I have never seen this icon on my phone before. It’s a chat bubble similar to this one (the front bubble, without the one behind it):
This icon isn’t in any of the apps that I use and isn’t an icon on my home screen or any other screen as far as I can find. When I’m receiving text messages, it says “Contact is typing a message”, so that’s not it. I’ve checked Google Hangouts and that’s not either. Those are the only two messaging apps I’ve ever used on this phone.
I tried to get a picture of it, but it’s faint and I can’t get my camera to pick it up. I thought maybe it was an overlay of some sort, but it doesn’t show up in screen shots, so it’s definitely burned in.

Is it like this??
https://assistant.google.com/
It just updated on my phone – wonder if Samsung has a specific version that is always open??
Don’t know the answer, but my wife got her S5 replaced under warranty for screen burn in. (Her burn in was a little more normal – persistent images of her home screen icons.)
Since I’m the first person to suggest this, is it possible someone else is using your phone without your knowledge? This would explain why you don’t recognize the burned-in icon yourself. Literally the only other thing I can think of is a persistent image that’s displayed when you aren’t using the device, like a screensaver or update screen that hangs for awhile.
@PooltoyWolf no, I’m the only one with access to it besides my wife and I highly doubt she’s moonlighting as a phone hijacker
Simple answer. Your phone has a refurbished screen
@futaira I wonder if they pull this shit on new phones. Is that legal?
@darkzrobe Maybe it was on accident, but I would definetly take the phone back to where it was purchased and ask some questions.
@futaira That is a very good suggestion - one I hadn’t considered, but at least plausible. I’d be very upset if I paid full price for a (supposedly) brand-new handset, only to discover it wasn’t brand-new!
@futaira certainly a thought, but in a high volume, every second counts environment it seems implausible they’d spend the time to harvest old screens much less repackage for production and reinsert them into the production line.
More plausible - this phone was that production sample pulled out for thorough testing - to validate the production process.
In that case one would hope if anything much more than basic turn on/off simple diagnostics were done they’d run the phone through a refurb channel or use it internally.
@futaira i bought my phone about a week after release date from an AT&T store. I doubt they would have had time to refurbish my phone to pass it off as new, not to mention the time it would take to burn the mage into the screen
Have you looked at any other phones? Do you see it on those as well? Perhaps it is burned into your retina.
@RedOak no, just on mine
Did you ever figure out what the issue was? I have the exact same problem with my Galaxy S7, same image, don’t recognize it at all.
@lyndsmck paging @capguncowboy
@lyndsmck nope, never did. Its really frustrating because i take really good care of my stuff. I don’t turn the brightness all the way up to prevent burn-in. I am still convinced Samsung has done something to make this happen
@therealjrn And you know who to blame…
@sligett oh shit. my bad.
@capguncowboy I don’t really understand how it could even be burn-in when neither of us have seen the symbol before. I found the same image as you when I searched, but nothing else even similar. It’s driving me nuts.
@lyndsmck I agree it’s frustrating but until someone comes up with a logical explanation, we’re just pissing into the wind. Like you said, I don’t recall ever seeing that icon before. I can’t explain how it has burned itself into the screen, but it did. At least I can find some solace in not being alone in this
@capguncowboy That was actually my thought as well but then I felt like a jerk for being glad someone else was suffering through the same thing heh
That’s actually the reflection of your face.
I figured it out. we are nerds. got any games you play a lot?
@lyndsmck
@lyndsmck Angry Birds?
clash royale
@lyndsmck
@lyndsmck Do you have an AMOLED screen? Try this:

@therealjrn That’s the in-game emoji we are all crying for! I’d use that so much!
