Phantom vs Phantom 2.0
0I quick question for the community. I am looking to purchase my first drone. On amazon I can get the phantom for $383. The phantom 2 is $690. Are there any major differences between the two? Is it worth the extra money for the phantom 2? Or, as a beginner should I stick with the phantom? Thanks.

Hey @JonT can you please nuke this thread. I think I have made my decision. Thanks.
@mfladd And what is your decision if I may ask? With the P2, you get twice as much flight time, but if cost is a concern, the p1 is just as capable. You can upgrade to the p2 props to get longer flight time.
@garyhgaryh I was going to go with the P2 with the zen muse gimbal for $698 because of the longer flight times and advanced features. Thoughts?
@mfladd Don't forget the $300 QX350 deal if you aren't set on DJI, 20+ minute flights but the batteries aren't as expensive as P2 batteries, and you can do mission planner autonomic flights.
The P2 with zenmuse will give you excellent footage though. I don't think you'll be disappointed with that at all. Didn't realize zenmuse was included in the price you had.
@djslack Thanks, I also considered the QX350: And did notice the battery price differences (phantom is steep). here is the comparison I watched that helped me decide (I only did a quick search of comparisons) But damn that groupon price is appealing!
@djslack Does the phantom with the zenmuse make it an appealing choice?
@mfladd wow, he called walkera out directly there in the beginning... And I just read @ruoouttaurmind story of his failure, i think i retract my recommendation. The phantoms are top notch and i don't think you'll be disappointed.
Yes the zenmuse makes it more appealing, another high quality product and you don't have to do the mods yourself to add a gimbal. I think you'll have a good platform there.
@djslack Yes, he did call out the QR, but still had good things to say about the QX. But if you watched the whole thing it seems that the Phantom may be better off for a beginner due to the controls. Thanks for your input, not a cheap purchase.
@mfladd i skipped out but the phantom did look a lot gentler. I can tell you on gps mode the p1 basically flies itself, is smooth and predictable and you just tell it where to go with the sticks, and when you stop, so does it. It's not like actually flying anything else i have. I would expect the p2 to behave the same.
The qr/qx was my typo, walkera's product is the qr x350 and blade (horizon hobby) is the qx350. I think walkera has some software issues.
@djslack I think you have helped me to make my mind up again. Thanks.
@JonT never mind nuking this. The input has been helpful. Even if I have already made up my mind.
@mfladd I think the zenmuse is about the best gimbal you can get. I've seen footage with other gimbals and I can almost always tell which ones were shot with the zenmuse gimbals. For $700, it's not a bad price. For $300 more, you can get a p3. I personally think there are qa issues with the 350pro from reading all the amazon reviews (might want to read @ruoouttaurmind review of his).
@garyhgaryh I did after @djslack pointed it out (and the review I watched above). Ahhh! don't get me looking at the P3 :) I think I will stick with my price point. Ok. pulling the trigger and I will talk to all of you soon. Thank you.
@mfladd For what it's worth... even after the crash of my QR X350 Pro today... I'd have another. System failures can happen on any brand. Heck the exact same situation happened a couple months ago to @snapster with his DJI Inspire, except his fell from about three times the distance. If it can happen to a high dollar bird like that, I am not going to turn off of Walkera because it happened to my $300 quad. I think the Groupon deal delivers a LOT of performance and capability for $299 and, as I said, I'd own another. It's very fast, very nimble, 25 minute flight time, batteries are half the cost of the P2 and, you can run waypoint missions right out of the box without having to spend hundreds of dollars on extra hardware. Ya, there are Walkera haters, but all the same things are happening to the DJI fanboys. It's the nature of the hobby! Search for haters for any brand and you'll find it. In my case, the system failure cost me a $300 quad. In @snapster's case it cost him ten times as much.
@ruouttaurmind In the video I posted I did see the incredible speed of the Walkera. As a first timer I was drawn to the controls of the P2. It was based on the above video I made my decision (starting at 8:32) I know one video doesn't tell the whole tale, but I am feeling more comfortable with the P2. (I also thought the Groupon deal was VERY tempting for the 350)
@mfladd you won't go wrong with a p2.
@garyhgaryh I also just ordered the GoPro Hero 3 (Silver) to outfit it. Hopefully, I will have some video here soon.
@mfladd I'm sure you made a great choice. DJI makes an excellent product, for sure. I love my Phantom v1.1.1. It's an excellent flier.
I hope you saw this. Pretty good deal. A little less than you mentioned. http://www.woot.com/offers/dji-phantom-2-quadcopter-w-zenmuse-for-gopro-1?ref=cnt_wp_4_2
@crapstick I did, thank you. My thought was to purchase from the mothership for a few dollars more because they always make everything right if there is a problem. With wOOt..I am kinda on my own. I have already pulled the trigger. I couldn't wait anymore!
@mfladd Awesome! Good luck!
@mfladd Posting the pic of my Phantom 1 bought on Meh.com as I said I would, just a little later than expected. I put on the $5 OEM prop guards after painting them, and I made my own landing gear extensions from plastic tubing and zip ties, they work way better than the stock gear and weigh very little. Incidentally this pic is after I hit four trees and a flag pole, and it did not crash. Haven't crashed it yet, so I must not be flying hard enough...
@mehdaf Fly it like ya stole it! :^)
Looks great! The real question... are you having fun?
@ruouttaurmind yes sir I am. Was very very worried the first time I flew it, by the tenth time I am letting everyone I know take the controls to share in the sheer joy that you can't help but experience when you grab the controls... For that, I blame @mfladd appropriately enough!
@mehdaf you just needed a gentle push. I think I need a shove to get mine off the ground. Hey do you notice I don't have a GOAT attached to my name over here. You can't blame me ;)~
