Pasta Drop
44Dear Meh: I really enjoyed the carbish deliciousness of Pasta Drop, as well as the mystery of wondering if I’d be receiving 400 pounds of pasta. And it was awesome, as the pandemic began, to realize I was fully stocked on pasta.
However, in the future, could you maybe call it Pasta Keep Its Messy Ass Tidily In the Cupboard?
Because today, a ten pound bag
DROPPED.
Let us all take a moment of silence for this noodless tragedy.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!
I think Meh missed a great opportunity to sell us containers designed to hold huge quantities of pasta!
@Kyeh That was exactly my second thought.
My first was “Why didn’t I buy a container to put this all in?”
@brainmist @Kyeh
I suggest the use of a 35 qt. kibble container, unused of course.

@Kyeh @rtjhnstn Well that’s rather brilliant. Pricey but brilliant. If PastaDrop were a regular option, I would definitely invest.
@brainmist @rtjhnstn I vaguely remember people discussing container ideas on the pastadrop site’s discussion list; I went looking for it but that website is gone!

@brainmist @RiotDemon @rtjhnstn Thanks!
We’re still working though our first 10 lb bag and I donated one to a food bank, so I totally agree with the above.
@readnj DO NOT let it fall. Those bags…are not sturdy.
@brainmist @readnj Mine actually came with a few bags not sealed, but I figured the pasta is going into boiling water for a long enough time that no germs will stand a chance.
It’s excellent pasta, so that is a sad loss!
@Kyeh @readnj I was able to salvage a lot… But with dogs, there was pretty much a floor level layer I decided I’d just accept as lost.
Fortunately, one dog is very happy with the crunchy sticks.
RIP

And you just didn’t pick it up and
boil the shit out of itcook it since it boils for ages anyway? (grin)The top 75%? Yes. The bottom bit with the dog hair? Nope!
They have this at Costco.
You get a free pasta container with every jug of Pub Mix.
@2many2no Genius.
@2many2no @brainmist
Don’t Costco, Water, and Sam’s sell cheap enormous jars of animal crackers?
@2many2no @brainmist @f00l you bet they do!
@2many2no @brainmist @f00l also, $5 at walmart will get you a giant container and a massive amount of free cheese puffs!
Personally, I’m ready for another Drop! I ordered 2 for myself, and they weren’t gigantic, but we eat a lot of pasta around here. I also sent a couple to people and they got huuuuuuge amounts! Carb me, Daddy-o!
@randoon me too… I did get gigantic orders, but I donated most of them to a homeless shelter. ( BTW @dave, the shelter is now a customer for masks and such!! Is there a referral bonus coming my way?? ) My son has polished off at least 2 of the 10 lb penne bags, may be more! He also had fun dropping #1 packs off at his friends’ houses randomly throughout the pandemic. We are finally running low.
@dave @mikibell @randoon I agree, I loved it! Made even better by the discounts on other stuff; it got me to try Casemates, even.
But having tried it, I’d definitely do it again. It’s good pasta.
@randoon Agree! Bring back pasta drop!
I had so much fun sending random amounts of pasta to people. Bring it back Meh - we all need some extra joy these days.
@GBrunner321 agree, and I have a few more victims I MEAN FRIENDS that need to get a drop
Bring back the pasta drop!!!
Pasta2021Drop.
I am nearly halfway through a single bag.
Good thing I have four of them.
Wouldn’t want to run out.
@InnocuousFarmer Thankfully, mine was the opened bag, and I was maybe 20% through. I don’t eat that much pasta (I’m pretty much a carnivore), but I liked the idea, and the pasta’s quite good!
@InnocuousFarmer I made a sizable donation to the foodbank. I hope they went a family that can use it.
Without a picture, it didn’t happen. Show us the carbo-carnage!
@txag96 I considered it, but…um. I hadn’t swept the floor for a few days, and I have dogs. So it looked pretty awful.
If I’d just swept/ mopped, I’d have picked up all that pasta and claimed the 5 second rule, but it turns out I have limits on dog fur in my linguini.
I haven’t even opened either of my 20lb bags of pasta yet, I really need to get on that. Or next Christmas everyone is getting uncooked pasta in a jar.
@Star2236
It’s very good - I discovered Di Martino pasta a while back, and was blown away by how much better it was than the usual grocery store brands, but it’s not that easy to find and it can be pricy. This Roma kind from Pastadrop is right up there in quality, in my opinion.
I made baked ziti last night. Yum.
I WANTED to send a Drop to my friends Mom up in Rural Alaska… unfortunately, while the site was running, they were moving from one rural village, to another, in a totally different part of the state, and by the time the move was over, so was the pasta drop experiment…
@earlyre I wanted to send random pasta to a lot of people, but I sussed onto it late, gave it a trial run…and yeah, over.
I am still working on the first small bits of my 330 pounds…although I did give over 100lbs away. I rarely eat carbs so it is going to last forever! Love it!
I was about 10% through my 20 pounds, and yeah. It was an abundance of carbs for this carnivore.
But the carbs were super tasty, as it turned out.
We were discussing this at work and we decided that another round of PastaDrop would definitely be copacetic.
If it could be combined with SauceDrop, it would be super extra special amazingly awesome.
Marinara, Alfredo, Pesto, Bolognese, Clam, Carbonara…
Mmmmmmmmm!!!
DIPLOMAT! RAT-A-TAT! FAT CAT! AWESOME!
@2many2no Don’t sleep on some olive oil, crushed red pepper flakes, Penzies pasta sprinkle and some grated Parmesan
@2many2no grated carrots cooked in with the pasta, and undrained can of tuna in olive oil, pinch of crushed red pepper flakes, and a handful of kalamata olives if you’re feeling fancy.
@2many2no I think the pastadrop was the result of an all-stop on many restaurants and the corresponding backup of the supply chain. Unless we get another sudden pandemic, it’s unlikely to happen in the same fashion. Of course, another spike and corresponding surplus might push some pasta our way, but I’m not going to hope for that.
.
Still working on my 120 pounds of penne.
@2many2no @Faffs
Best sauce from a store
/image wegmans puttanesca sauce
@2many2no @Faffs @ybmuG better than Rao’s???
@2many2no @Faffs @tinamarie1974 I’ve had their vodka sauce and it is very good, and I’m sure their others are as well, but puttanesca is another world completely and I haven’t had a better jarred version.
@2many2no but how on earth are you going to store multiple 5 gallon buckets of sauce once you’ve opened one?
They also need walk-in-cooler-drop. This is gonna get expensive
@2many2no @djslack I can guarantee that “SauceDrop” would end in tragedy for me.
@brainmist @djslack I hear dat!
@2many2no Don’t forget arrabbiata…
@2many2no @djslack Our neighbor, tutored in the sauce-making arts by an Italian grandmother, makes enormous quantities at a time. Just under 5 gal.
Large canning jars were once the preferred method, but now:
freezing in shallow trays then transferred to vacuum-sealer bags. Easy to stack in the freezer.
@2many2no @compunaut @djslack that’s the best way to make sauce. I seriously think it comes out better in large quantities. Maybe because consistency is easier. With smaller quantities, it is easier to get certain ingredients out of balance. I also learned to cook in large quantities so there’s that.
@2many2no @compunaut @djslack @ybmuG
There’s always CheeseDrop if SauceDrop doesn’t work out.
@2many2no @compunaut @djslack @mike808 YES - CHEESE DROP
/youtube pinky cheese
@2many2no @djslack When the garden is producing 10 lbs of tomatoes at a time, we run them through a blendtec and freeze them in gallon ziplocks. Then during the cooler months, my wife boils them down into sauce a few bags at a time, which she cans to make room in the freezer. I guess the point I am trying to make is that sauce freezes well.
Incidentally, she uses a canning method I never saw before. I always canned using a water bath canner like my mom did. My wife runs her jars through the dishwasher while the sauce is cooking, then lines them up still warm, fills them with the hot sauce from the pot, sets the lids on and bakes them in the oven for 20 minutes at 225F. She then sets them on the counter to cool, and they seal perfectly. We have been doing it this way for many years now without a problem. Sure is easier.
So I dug out this thread because I wanted to repeat my thanks to the lovely folks at Meh for replacing my dropped pasta with a mystery pasta drop, and I realized something.
Whoever saw my post and thought, "Let’s drop brainmist some pasta! In a special drop-proof pasta box! "
Made this wonderfulness happen THE SAME DAY.
Thanks, folks. You’ve made me feel really special, and I’ll appreciate it every time I’m enjoying these carbs.
@brainmist maybe you’re being fattened up to be the next goat…better carbo-load!
@amehzinggrace
Ordered pastadrop for several people several times; most of which was given to food banks, who were delighted and thrilled to have it. Then finally ordered one for me. Only got 10 lbs (1 bag) though the order clearly stated that it was 20 lbs. It wasn’t. I wrote to Meh, but they said, “meh, that’s all we got.” And that was that.
My 10 lbs is about gone now, with maybe a bit over a pound left. It was linguine, but it was good linguine, bronze cut, imported from Italy.
If pastadrop ever comes this way again, I will order for me first.
I dropped pasta on three different unsuspecting individuals. The surprising (& not sure if it’s disappointing) thing is that I never got a single noodle out of it! I thought sure I’d have a care package left unattended, sitting on my doorstep one day…even if it was just one package of noodley goodness! It just leads me to wonder what the heck these people did with their treasure troves of carb overload?
@tohar1 Geez, yeah - or they could’ve invited you over for a nice pasta dinner at least!
@Kyeh YES! 2 of the 3 live within 30 miles of me…and notta!!
@tohar1 How rude!
I am not sure how much pasta got dropped on me…it felt like 100lbs…I had 4 big boxes with 2 smaller boxes inside…seriously was alot of pasta…I literally gave most of it away…kept one small box and still that was too much for my house…I guess we don’t eat as much pasta as I thought we did…my mom initially took one big box for herself…and apparently she went through that faster than I went through a small box (half the size)…and I still have 1/2 of that small box in the freezer…(I hope that was a good place to put extra pasta)…I gave away a big box to my SIL who has like 40 kids…well 4 boys 1 girl…I figured they would go through that and need more…I’m pretty sure my mom beat them on their box as well…so I sent my mom the additional big box and split the remaining small box amongst friends…who were dubious about how much they could actually consume as well…I’m available for a wine drop…or chocolate drop…even a fruit drop…someone run with that - an apple drop would be fabulous…just sayin…and you’re welcome…
@amehzinggrace Casemates is kinda a wine drop (DON’T DROP IT). But what really made it fun was not knowing how much you’d get. I think most of us got 10-20 pounds, but it’s like playing a lottery where everyone wins and some folks win ridiculously.
The discounts on the other sites didn’t hurt one bit either.
If you’re desperate for a “pasta drop,” check out the prices of bulk pasta on Webstaurant.com. They won’t have Meh prices, or VMP shipping, if you’re a graybeard enough to even know what that is, but one can get a lot of pasta, your choice of type, at amazing bulk prices.
I buy from them periodically, but haven’t ordered pasta as yet. I always get fast shipping and good service, but I have to pay their shipping rates, which are usually a significant cost.
If anyone has done this with pasta from them, please share your comments with us.
