@djslack no, your phone battery is 3000mah. you phone can charge using anything from 500mah-2100mah power. at 500mah, it just charges slowly(or not at all and stay at the same battery if you own a battery sucking phone or are using wifi+gps or something)
@djslack It's probably a typo like you stated. Unusual to mention a mAh for a specific period of time. If it's 500mA for 1 hour, 20 minutes. That calculates to 666.666mAh. If it's not a typo, then it's really 500mAh. Either way, it sucks.
@cengland0@communist@trisk i looked it up, eneloop aa typical capacity is 2000mAh. That times 2.4v operating voltage is 4.8Wh of energy. Assuming 100% efficiency, you can output a total of 960mAh at 5V over the usb output from a fully charged pair, plus a negligible amount of solar charge during the time the batteries are depleting into my device. This leaves me unable to compete my post-apocalyptic turns in evil apples, which makes me unhappy. And forget about capturing portals after civilization has crashed due to shaper influence.
@cengland0 I glossed over the stated discharge time, 666mAh is even worse. Ouch.
@communist mA is a measure of current, mAh is current multiplied by time which is a measure of capacity.
@MsELizardBeth was I too vague in blaming shapers influence for the end of civilization? :) I'm a proud smurf, although I don't play as much as I used to.
I really like Panasonic stuff and especially Eneloop batteries, but I'm hesitant on this combo product. And it isn't clear whether these are the latest hold-a-charge-a-long-time version Eneloops ($2 each).
But on the interesting side: "Made in America, assembled in Japan"
Phone battery 4 bucks on ebay ..very kewl item i also have a 20,000 MAh power pack paid 12 bucks , ebay...but looks like a fun item price looks ok ..just passing on like the 20th item in the last 21 days ..Nice try Meh
10,000mAh solar-charged portable battery packs are routinely available for $25-30. 666mAh is totally useless for charging a phone. This is a no-go at any price.
@ellett although, this one gives you 666mAh @ 5v, not the usual rating using the 10,000 @ 3.7v - conversion losses. It is probably more like 6-7Ah output at 5V, assuming that it really is 10Ah, which it probably isn't.
Well I now have a christmas present for my sister who has never seen a flashlight she hasn't wanted (eg you can never own too many flashlights)... I'd like to see meh sell a folding panel solar power device that stores more power and can be used to charge things that need more power than this.
@mehbee What? You think the apocalypse is just around the corner? Her husband collects screwdrivers (eg a Man can never have too many screwdrivers - that cheap tool screwdriver thing they sold a while back is his Christmas present LOL). They make quite a pair.
@Kidsandliz@Kidsandliz If you had said sonic screwdrivers, they would have been my new idols! It could be worse, they could collect something that would be really embarrassing to by as presents..my brain is too tired to come up with some clever examples.
@cengland0 was simply pointing out the specific Eneloop batteries included since there are several generations. But, FYI, Eneloops, like other rechargeable AA's are 1.2 volt not 1.5 volt.
USB output power: Approx. 1 hour 20 minutes, 5V at 500mA*h*
Because learning the difference between power and energy would require you to graduate from first grade, but joining the marketing department doesn't. Almost as bad as using W/h when you mean W.
@Fen_Star W=J/s 1000mAh= 1Ah= something that only makes sense in some contexts and should not be used by the end user because it is valueless without being multiplied by the nominal voltage, and even then isn't exactly the same a Wh because the voltage output changes. Today most of the time your DC-DC converts aren't just wasting extra voltage so Wh makes more sense.
The last solar batteries I got on meh are crap and emit a high pitched whistle when in direct sunlight. My husband can't hear it, but it drives me crazy.
@GreenMt@MsElizardBeth And TV section in some stores - OMG there were stores I could not enter, the living rooms I could not be in at some people's houses. Eventually though age or hearing damage will make it all go away. LOL
@thismyusername Me too and my mom did not believe me when I said I didn't even want to enter some stores due to the teeth curling noise from, I presume, the lights. She claimed I was making it all up just to be a pain in the rear.
I'm planning on using this to power a GoPro for a timelapse in the sun -- usually my GoPro dies in about 2 hours from a full charge but i figure it might last a few more hours if its being pumped full of solar energy.
@mikeys4 Don't think so, It is basically a solar dual AA recharger, and once those are charged they can then charge other items. here is good info for finding a panel that will work http://cam-do.com/GoProPower.html
@sjk3 Nah he's right - landlines are usually clearer and louder than cell phones and you can actually hear people even if there is more background noise. Plus they are cheaper.
My only problem with this product is that it would require me to go outside. I try to avoid that whenever possible, especially nowadays when it is 70°+ and humid in the morning and in the upper 90°s and humid in the afternoon.
Also, Meh, how have you not fixed that yet? There's a whole discussion thread on what exactly the capacity of the battery pack in this thing is because the math doesn't work with the broken units.
First thing I've seen on here that's overpriced. All kinds of better, cheaper, waterproof solar chargers to be had. Although I do like the inclusion of the Eneloop batteries, they're the best rechargeables to be had.
Do not buy this if you think it is going to charge your smart phone. It will not!! It is only really us full as a solar powered flashlight. But the price is right.

stupidly overpriced.
So this is 666mAh for $24? Way overpriced for under performing product.
waaaaay too much. I'd buy this for like $5
500mah? My phone is like 3000mah. So what you're saying is, it's not gonna charge my phone.
But it's a neat solar light.
@djslack no, your phone battery is 3000mah. you phone can charge using anything from 500mah-2100mah power. at 500mah, it just charges slowly(or not at all and stay at the same battery if you own a battery sucking phone or are using wifi+gps or something)
@djslack I think that's a typo and they meant the output current is 500mA, rather than a solar charger that suddenly stops after generating 500mAh
@djslack It's probably a typo like you stated. Unusual to mention a mAh for a specific period of time. If it's 500mA for 1 hour, 20 minutes. That calculates to 666.666mAh. If it's not a typo, then it's really 500mAh. Either way, it sucks.

@communist mA is a measure of current, mAh is current multiplied by time which is a measure of capacity.
@djslack enlightened or resistance?
@djslack Confirmed it was a typo to say 500mAh. The manual says 500mA.
@MsELizardBeth was I too vague in blaming shapers influence for the end of civilization? :) I'm a proud smurf, although I don't play as much as I used to.
@cengland0 80 minutes wasn't a typo, though. Oof. Thanks for the catch.
@djslack I was one of those once.... Then I saw the error of my ways (and realized the local smurfs were assholes and bullies)
@MsELizardBeth I suppose it varies from place to place. Your RES sounds like my ENL. Either way, happy hacking!
WTF is Amazon thinking selling it for $70+??? And it's Amazon, not some inflated 3rd party seller.
Congrats to the Golden State Warriors!

Knock, knock, Neo.
Yeah right, like I'm going out anywhere near that flaming sky-ball of death.
@awk It's not the sun that will get you, it's THEM. You know, The Phenomenon

But on the interesting side: "Made in America, assembled in Japan"
@RedOak yea those panels are made in Oregon! My guess they are made here:
'Might be an interesting off-the-grid/camping gadget with that light feature - wonder how useful the 60 hour mode is?.
Phone battery 4 bucks on ebay ..very kewl item i also have a 20,000 MAh power pack paid 12 bucks , ebay...but looks like a fun item price looks ok ..just passing on like the 20th item in the last 21 days ..Nice try Meh

@Fen_Star That being said, the energy storage in this product is obviously still a lot lower.
Well I now have a christmas present for my sister who has never seen a flashlight she hasn't wanted (eg you can never own too many flashlights)... I'd like to see meh sell a folding panel solar power device that stores more power and can be used to charge things that need more power than this.
@Kidsandliz You can't..you can NEVER have too many flashlights. Listen to your sister.
@mehbee What? You think the apocalypse is just around the corner? Her husband collects screwdrivers (eg a Man can never have too many screwdrivers - that cheap tool screwdriver thing they sold a while back is his Christmas present LOL). They make quite a pair.

Gotta say, the offerings for almost the past month have been pretty lousy.
@Portlis I disagree. the nano quad was a good thing
@Portlis beyond lousy. I try to buy at least SOMETHING each month, and I could not even con myself into buying anything.
The most important question I have, can the the flashlight be reflected back on to the solar panel and charge itself?
@vrillusions yes.
@vrillusions but diminishing returns.
@vrillusions
@thismyusername Laser Unicorn!
@Pufferfishy
From the manual, "HR-3UTGA" Eneloops. That would be 2,000mAh-rated for each AA.
@RedOak at 1.5V each or 3V for the pair. Then when you draw it at 5V with the loss of the circuit that does the up-conversion, you get 666mAh.
@cengland0 was simply pointing out the specific Eneloop batteries included since there are several generations. But, FYI, Eneloops, like other rechargeable AA's are 1.2 volt not 1.5 volt.
meh, an old and obsolete design. Good quality though; it would make a decent solar charged emergency light, but it's laughable as a power bank.
USB output power: Approx. 1 hour 20 minutes, 5V at 500mA*h*

@Fen_Star Adding the extra "h" was a typo. The manual says 5V at 500mA for 1 hour 20 minutes.
@Fen_Star Impressive. You learned a lot more than did I in first grade.
The last solar batteries I got on meh are crap and emit a high pitched whistle when in direct sunlight. My husband can't hear it, but it drives me crazy.
@MsELizardBeth It's almost as bad as the screaming sounds from the light bulbs .. MAKE THEM STOP !!!!!!!!!
@GreenMt @MsElizardBeth And TV section in some stores - OMG there were stores I could not enter, the living rooms I could not be in at some people's houses. Eventually though age or hearing damage will make it all go away. LOL
@Kidsandliz Age alone is enough to make the high pitch sounds go away
@cengland0 I don't want to wish away my hearing but not twitching when someone blows a dog whistle in my vicinity would be pretty awesome.
@Kidsandliz I had that issue back when the tvs were cr tubes... I could locate the electronics section from the high pitched squeal.
@cengland0 Heaving Loss? is that your ability to vomit on command?
@sp3ar Ha, I didn't even notice that typo before I posted that image.
@cengland0 So the translation is "Three cheers for old age" then???
@thismyusername Me too and my mom did not believe me when I said I didn't even want to enter some stores due to the teeth curling noise from, I presume, the lights. She claimed I was making it all up just to be a pain in the rear.
I'm planning on using this to power a GoPro for a timelapse in the sun -- usually my GoPro dies in about 2 hours from a full charge but i figure it might last a few more hours if its being pumped full of solar energy.
You guys think it will work?
@mikeys4 Don't think so, It is basically a solar dual AA recharger, and once those are charged they can then charge other items. here is good info for finding a panel that will work http://cam-do.com/GoProPower.html
I'd buy that for a dollar... Otherwise.
I rarely use my cell phone.. I have a landline that I use to talk to people. I don't text, I want to hear their voices.
@mick Uh oh, grandpa has wandered away from the nursing home again. Quick, somebody get him back before he gets on the Internet again!
@mick I don't like reading comments. Could you link to a recording of you saying this out loud instead?
@sjk3 Nah he's right - landlines are usually clearer and louder than cell phones and you can actually hear people even if there is more background noise. Plus they are cheaper.
@sjk3 you'll be that age, whatever it is. No way to avoid it. Other than perishing prematurely.
@RedOak Hey kid, get off my lawn.
My only problem with this product is that it would require me to go outside. I try to avoid that whenever possible, especially nowadays when it is 70°+ and humid in the morning and in the upper 90°s and humid in the afternoon.
@sjk3 Stick it in a sunny window
@sjk3 90's? You must live in a nice place. Here's today's weather where I live:
They got their mA and mAh mixed up.
Battery capacity should be in mAh and output current capacity should be in mA. :-) Ok so gimme my nitpicker badge.
Also, Meh, how have you not fixed that yet? There's a whole discussion thread on what exactly the capacity of the battery pack in this thing is because the math doesn't work with the broken units.
