@baqui63 When my VDIL moved into her apartment nearby, she borrowed a hand-crank burr grinder from me until she could get an electric burr one, which showed up here a few weeks later.
Toaster oven. I actually got it in an IRK and use it more than I thought I would. It’s great for cooking small amounts or as a 2nd oven. Since it also air fry’s we use it a lot for reheating and making nachos for 1.
None of the above, because before I was in my teens, my family had none of those appliances, and we managed to live.
Those are all CONVENIENCES, not necessities.
@phendrick I have a friend who learned to skin and dress small game at age 6 for similar reasons, and she would disagree. She would also say that necessities are just things that you don’t want to do the work of doing without.
@phendrick When does a convenience become a necessity?
(I had this discussion with a friend when we jumped in and out of food stamps about the affordability of milk and juice. I went the “prison” route and suggested just having gruel and water would be “necessary”. And then we became more jaded at our changing palates.)
@narfcake@stolicat Meh - I’ve been making my coffee a cup at a time with my hand-cranked Kyocera ceramic grinder and Aeropress for years and see no reason to go back. Since my wife drinks tea (no coffee), these days I only bring out the coffee maker when we have coffee-drinking guests.
@Kyeh have been tempted to get one of those each time I see them come up. Also I was going with red as a kitchen decor theme, but lately my decor theme is “way too much stuff on the counter”
@Kyeh We have this as well (not red though) and use it every day. Multiple times per day. It’s probably the most used appliance in our kitchen, besides the fridge.
We could probably get rid of the microwave and just use our air fryer toaster oven.
And this one in particular is awesome because we can fold it up out of the way for more counter space. We’ve gone through 2 or 3 previous toaster ovens in the past, and so far this one is the best.
@pmarin Haha - my kitchen “decor” is both of those - overcluttered and primary colors, mainly red. I think kitchens should be colorful, not gray and black.
@Fuzzalini Exactly! What @LaserEyes said!
I originally found out about these when my mother’s toaster oven died, and convinced them to get one. Then decided it was such a good idea I got one myself. Now I use it all the time and seldom use my big oven. My brother has their oven filled with pots and pans because this is what he always uses too. You can fit a whole pizza in it!
“Outside of your oven” struck me as funny because I unplugged my electric stove to use the 240V outlet for my computers (ATX power supplies run about 3 percentage points more efficiently on 240V than 120V).
Like many other voters, my microwave is indispensable, with slot/oven-type toasters contending for second. The slot toaster is a lot faster and more energy-efficient, but the toaster oven can heat up bread toppings to get delectable results, such as toasted sourdough and peanut butter.
*-Real peanut butter that is, with just peanuts and salt. I’m personally not a fan of the flavor or consistency of no-stir or other varieties of peanut butter.
@Wireball_ i needed 240V for some work equipment (i was WFH from a Silicon Valley company for 24 years before retirement) and wired it myself. Only do this if you know (or at least think you know) what you are doing, and safely. It was a 240V 30A circuit but was close to the breaker panel in a basement area; not too hard to wire.
It’s interesting that the range outlet is the highest-current outlet in most houses. Dryers are usually 30A but electric range is 40-50A. It would be ideal for electric car charging if you could just get the car into your kitchen!
@Wireball_ - my microwave died at one point and I figured that replacing it was no rush since we have an oven, a toaster oven, and a crockpot. WRONG! You just don’t think of all the things you nuke until you’re nukeless.
@pmarin@Wireball_ I added a 240V/50A outlet in my garage when we had an EV (leased, now returned). I have some experience with electrical wiring - I once wired my entire house in the 80’s (new construction, inspected and approved ).
@werehatrack@Wireball_ Hey, this reminded me that I also have a Corona mill - I used it to crush grain for beer making, but haven’t made any beer for a while. Maybe I’ll dig it out and try some peanut butter… (or more beer)
Most of my kitchen was taken up by the stovetop/oven/air-fryer/microwave. There was also the fridge. And then the sink, where I had recently added a dishwasher (which is now finally grit-free; though the dishrack needs cleaning).
I suppose utensils, the can-opener, the blender, (the Dorothy cold-stirrer,) and a lazy-susan full of spices are the only things not a potted plant or furniture.
sink
@tweezak yep & George Fornan grill.
@tweezak the sink is not an appliance.
The help.
Burr coffee grinder, tho I guess I could get a manual one.

My toaster oven.

@remo28 We use our toaster oven far more frequently than our traditional oven. And more than the toaster for that matter.
I’m hoping the Ninja foodies return before my current one gives out. Air fryer and pressure cooker in one appliance.

@f00l You are the appliance
Running water.

@2many2no Excellent answer, though not technically an appliance.
None of the above, because before I was in my teens, my family had none of those appliances, and we managed to live.

@narfcake This is the ONLY correct answer!
This - Ninja Foodi 8-in-1 Air Fry Large Toaster Oven. I like it so well I got them for the rest of my family.
And mine IS red.
@Kyeh have been tempted to get one of those each time I see them come up. Also I was going with red as a kitchen decor theme, but lately my decor theme is “way too much stuff on the counter”
@Kyeh We have an air fryer and toaster oven. This would take up less space.
@Kyeh @pmarin
Your problem is far too few countertops, not too much on them.
@Kyeh We have this as well (not red though) and use it every day. Multiple times per day. It’s probably the most used appliance in our kitchen, besides the fridge.

VAN GOGH! MANGO! TANGO! AWESOME!

@Kyeh love my toaster oven/convection oven. Use it more than my actual oven.

@Wireball_ Peanut “butter” ground in a Corona hancranked grain mill last week, using salted dry roast peanuts only.
@werehatrack @Wireball_ Hey, this reminded me that I also have a Corona mill - I used it to crush grain for beer making, but haven’t made any beer for a while. Maybe I’ll dig it out and try some peanut butter… (or more beer)
The way this question is worded, it reminds me of that old joke:
@xobzoo Ah, Groucho…
It’s a toss between the microwave and my smoothie maker
Kitchen Aid
Wife
My Nespresso machine that I got in a Fukubukoro.
Air Fryer
Knives
Considering a good half of all meals I make at home are nuked, definitely the microwave oven…especially my 1991 GE model!
@PooltoyWolf What do you use for the bad half?
@macromeh Hahaha! I guess those are the few times I end up not liking something new.

ALL my other appliances are “outside” my oven and fridge.
(Guess I’m channeling Groucho now that I read the other comments!)
