Our newest family mehmbers.
30So, yesterday my wife took my daughter to a swim meet in Dover, DE. They then went to the DE State Fair. Guess what they came home with? Yup, Sugar Gliders. She called me and asked what I thought - I said go ahead get them, never thinking in a million years she would.
Next thing I know there is a cage in the living room with these adorable little marsupials. My daughter even haggled with the guy over the price. Pics to come. They are on a 48 hr adjustment period. Two little girls have been added to the family. Cats are curious, Dog is super curious. Does anyone else have these as pets?

Never even heard of them before! So neat looking.
@conandlibrarian
Huh, neat.
Lazy man’s way to find out more:
/youtube sugar gliders
/giphy sugar gliders
/image sugar gliders
@dave Thanks. Loved that vid.
Super cute. Usually really expensive so if she managed to haggle pricing, that’s good!
Brief info about sugar gliders and other pets:
http://www.tropicalattitudepets.com/sugar-gliders-and-other-pets/
@RiotDemon Thanks for that. But you are right about the expensive part. That is why I am so surprised. My wife is usually the thrifty one. Not me. My daughter was able to haggle a bit, but they weren’t budging very far I am told. She said she put on her “little girl smile” to bring the price down. What a piece of work she is.
@mfladd A real Mehtizen in the making.
YouTube kept suggesting sugar glider videos, and they’re cute, so I watched a few. Apparently there’s lots of controversy about some of the breeders and who actually gives good information.
So here’s a reddit post… You can skip the opening post unless you wanna read the drama. The actual replies have information from people that own them and what they suggest for newbies.
@RiotDemon And where is it? Don’t keep me standing on pins and needles.
So far they are healthy and well taken care of. Their growls are the best
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCMGLhzp5t
p.s. when they bite it is more of a nibble.
Sorry…video didn’t load.
@mfladd ah shit… My bad:
@RiotDemon Thank you. I have been doing so much research. Wife also made me listen to a 45 minute cd that came with them…ugh. I would rather do the searches.
Opening post drama: I am aware they are considered exotic pets. I know some might have an issue with this. I get it. But they have a good home here. My children think they are best thing ever. So do I. They will be loved.
@mfladd the drama is more about the Pocket Pets company creating all these other websites and paying vets to say their information is the best. Ok to live in tiny cages, only eat pellets, super easy to care for… Blah blah. It’s funny because in the first three minutes I was looking up info for sugar gliders, I was redirected back to that pocket pets website.
Reddit is usually good about real people giving decent information, so it’s worth a read. Of course it’s the internet so everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
They are cute pets, and I’m sure with the research you’re doing, they will have a great home.
@RiotDemon
I have been told that becoming a vet is as expensive and difficult as becoming an MD. After which you get to either finance your own clinic or work for a chain. And make way less $. And have many clients need you to be the source of finance for services, clients having no insurance or insurance that does not compare to insurance for humans. And you get to be paying back student loans at age 80.
Tho i deplore this company’s practices, i understand how a veterinarian might just want not to go bankrupt.
@mfladd The way you guys are about your animals, I have no doubt they’re in a good home. They’ll be more spoiled in great hands.
Are they babies, or full size? So cute!
@KDemo Babies right now.
@KDemo I promise pics with the kids.
My brother and his ex used to have a pair. They were pretty awesome. They loved fruit and yogurt, if I remember correctly. Aren’t they nocturnal, too?
@PurplePawprints yes, from all the info I can find. This will piss my wife off even more. Is that wrong? I still love her anyway.
Back in college a guy that worked at sunglass hut with a friend of mine had one. Some days he brought it to work–he would say it went to sleep in his jacket pocket and he didn’t know it was there. They would feed him grapes and let him jump back and forth between them, and he always got attention from the girls in the mall.
@djslack Wait! I can use them to get girls?
Wait…wife is beating me for this post.
my favorite reply was the guy who said “try android”
@mfladd I’m guessing he stalked them and got their phone number from a friend to prank them. Otherwise, it’s fucking magic.
I’f it were me I’d also read up on cats and little living toys that move… and see if there are tried and true ways you can get the cats to view them as babies rather than as edible treats or things to play with and then accidentally kill them (thinking of cat paws through the cage wires, one that accidentally gets loose and a cat finds out…)
@Kidsandliz Wishing for the best here. I honestly believe my cats will be cool. I know my dog will.
@mfladd Well that sounds cool. I had fish once and my cats thought they were cat TV. And one spent hours trying to figure out how to his grimy little claws on them LOL
@Kidsandliz I will keep you updated. I think I might need a Sugar Glider Cam as they are nocturnal.
@mfladd what? You haven’t bought a camera on meh yet??
I swear to god I am not a bad parent (they had no beer). I only took this pic to give them a photo op (my beer). They are crazy late at night.
@mfladd They probably are interested in the smell. Some beers have a very fruity smell (but that alcohol would be bad, and if there’s hops in it, they’d be hard on their little systems too). Such cute kids you have. :-}
@Shrdlu True dat. It is the citrus. I love grapefruit. I didn’t let them sip. Just a pic. I can’t tell you how crazy these kids are when allowed to roam free for a bit of time.
Thank you for loving the kids
@mfladd grapefruit IPA?
@carl669 hahahaha…don’t look at me that way. It’s good.
@mfladd I might not like beer… But Smirnoff ice has a summer time flavor that’s grapefruit. It tastes like straight up grapefruit juice that’s been fizzed. I love it.
@RiotDemon good catch on that reddit post (I think).
I had hairless rats which are considered “exotic pets”! Actually, any pet other than a cat or dog is an exotic pet especially when it comes to a vet.
The top comment - the very long, detailed comment - seems to be spot on for having an exotic pet. At the end of the comments he/she says something like ‘it may sound like I am scaring you …’ Laying out that exotic pets are a very expensive and time consuming experience. As with rats gliders seem to be very intelligent and being nocturnal come with those special needs!
If you are in or very near a big city finding a good exotic vet should not be an issue but a general vet will be useless. I read a lot of the article but not every word and didn’t notice any specific health issues mentioned but I am sure there are some. I did see that a forum was mentioned and would join that. Another issue not mentioned but should be brought up is life span. Often times these wonderful, little, intelligent creatures have somewhat short life spans (2 or 3 years for a healthy ratty is considered a long life) and can be devastating when they pass.
Best thing: food includes bee pollen = great for the whole family!
A little nervous news:
/giphy Facehugger
@fjp999 Life span for the little buggers are 12-15 years.
@mfladd Excellent news for 12+ years of Facehugging!
@fjp999 We are very lucky. Even though we live rural/small city I have found at least 3 vets that will see exotics and 1 breeder nearby. Thanks for making me look into this.
@mfladd You all are doing great! Lucky little critters to have found you all. Keep up the (hard) good work.
Good luck with them. I’ve heard they almost always need a friend and are fragile creatures that need lots of TLC. Lots of fresh food, water, quiet time are necessary, and know the little buggers like to hide in the most unusual, tiny spaces.
@LaVikinga Thanks. The bonding process has commenced. TLC I have lot of (for animals at least…maybe kids, not so much adults).
Several years ago my son took a wildlife class at the local park district. Every week the guy brought in different animals for the kids to learn about. Of them all, and there were lots, my son fell in love with the sugar glider. He begged for one.
But I thought they were too exotic, so my son ended up with a hamster instead. In hindsight, I wish we had gotten the sugar glider. Just way cooler.
Keep us posted!
@pitamuffin awwww…I will. They are currently in a pouch attached to my wife. She is not sharing
All right, it’s been hours. Where’s a new picture of the kidlets?
@Shrdlu Ask and you shall receive.
Being frisky.
Also, what they do.
Still love the little, buggers.
@mfladd Aaaaagggghhhh so cute!
@mfladd Thank you, very much. The scratches will heal, and they are oh, so cute.
@Shrdlu @KittySprinkles. I promise a lot more pics!
Sleepy balls
do you sautée them or what
@Lotsofgoats What???
They are not for eating!!!
@mfladd how else are you gonna caramelize the sugars ugh
@mfladd My dog would disagree.
@sammydog01 we are doing bonding time with the animals too. Dog will be fine. There is still one cat (out of four) I am concerned about. But he will come around I think.
My son during bonding time.
@mfladd All three are pretty danged cute.
@Shrdlu Thanks. He really does love things big and small, He is all about saving things which makes me proud. Whenever there is a bug/insect/spider in the house that most people would step on he says, “No, save it! Take it outside.”
So the kids were able to name their own Sugar Gliders - they are both girls.
My daughter’s is Sugar (how original), and my son named his Stitch since she is the biggest troublemaker, most vocal, and bites most often. But the bonding process is going well (less biting).
Here is Sugar just chill’n and taking in the environment.
I am hoping one day our cats will be this cool with the Gliders. But right now I am far too afraid that they look at them like a meal. But the dog is completely fine with them - he runs.
The good thing is our cats front paws are declawed.
@mfladd Woah that is seriously cute.
The Walking Dead (Daryl) loves Sugar Gliders.
@mfladd Daryl is my favorite. I him for real.
@PurplePawprints
@mfladd I was seriously creeped out when I thought they were going to go there, though. I’m not sure how old she was then, but in my mind, she was always a teenager.
@mfladd I was already completely jealous that you get to have some of those cuties and then you add a pic of Norman with one…jealousy and sweetness overload!
So here are the"little rodents" spending quality time with my son. The kids love these things. Shhhhh…So do I. But I can see why people should never buy these pets on a whim. They are a lot of work - but WORTH it.
p.s. I have deposit down on another one with a breeder, but my wife doesn’t know - I am going to be in SOOOOOO much trouble. It is a leutistic glider (different color) and will be born in Sept/Oct.
@mfladd Aaaack, what cuties!! And the human cutie, how the hell did that happen. I mean he looks so much like you it’s scary. Only…adorable.
@KittySprinkles Ha! I know. Did you notice his Come to the dark side shirt?
@mfladd Aww, I missed that last night! That second picture of him is just perfection.
@mfladd I’m totally in love, with all the sweeties in these pics. This reminds me of the squirrel we had when I was a kid. His name was Teacup.
@mfladd They remind me of young bats.(the breed that is cute) As Paul Simon said “rolly polly little bat faced girls” and a boy.
@mehbee Thanks.
Damn cute! On a tangentially related note, my wife and I will be flying to Denver this weekend to pick up our newest family members. These little guys:
@rv617 Ahhhh… They are adorable! Congrats! What breed? Post pics when you get them home.
@mfladd Thanks! They’re Chinese crested hairless pups. Their mom was rescued from a puppy mill when she was pregnant with them. Soon, they’ll be part of our family. Although they won’t entire fill the hole left by our recently deceased 17-year-old dog. He was our first-born child.
@rv617 Sorry for the loss, but you are doing a good thing. They will never replace him, but they will carry on a legacy of being loved. Can’t wait to see pics.
@mfladd Thanks so much. Knowing that these little guys are rescues, just like our last dog was, definitely helps. I’ll be sure to post pics once we get them home!
@rv617 Saving puppies, from a mom saved from a puppy mill is a good deed. I know you will not understand this pic probably - just know it is a good thing.
@mfladd out of curiousity, why did you pick a cartoon fly with the letter Q?
@jbartus Quick search. Fit the bill for “Qualified” - moved on. I like the bee.
@mfladd No idea what that means, but I’ll take good whenever I can get it!
@rv617 https://meh.com/forum/topics/who-wants-to-be-a-superhero-for-a-day-unmehficial-contest
@mfladd lol alrighty then. It’s a cute fly I suppose.
@jbartus Bee!
@mfladd hate to break it to you…
I’m just gonna have to disagree.
@jbartus Don’t kill my buzzzzzzz.
@mfladd here I made you a present:
A blue version in case you like the blue more:
@mfladd Ah, now it all makes sense. Thanks so much!!! I had seen your good deed thread, but didn’t connect the bee.
That thread, by the way, is one of the things that motivated me to try to be less of a lurker and actually participate a bit more with all the fine Mehricans on this forum. From what I’ve read, a damn fine group of people.
@rv617 Awww…thanks. Another lurker joins us - that makes me happy. They are a great bunch of people. A pain in my royal bee ass, but still great people.
@jbartus Thank you for the bee present. How about one in Puma black/red?
@mfladd
@mfladd yesterday you were happy calling a blue fly a bee and now you want it in red and black… you’re incorrigible.
@jbartus Thanks!
@mfladd de nada.
@rv617 I’m so sorry for your loss. What a great was to honor the love y’all shared than to rescue two darling puppies. Warms my heart to hear about animals finding wonderful forever homes. Can’t wait to see pics.
@mehbee Thanks. Losing our little guy has been really tough on all of us. Which is why we’re trying to plug the hole he left in our lives with puppies. My wife already says she loves them and we don’t meet them until tomorrow!
@rv617 ditto. We lost our little Cocker Spaniel girl “Sophie” in April to cancer. I think that is why my wife came home with gliders. She still has her crate up and her dog bowl was left for at least 3 months.
But we still have one more Cocker and 4 rescue cats.
@mfladd Pets really are one of life’s great joys, as far as I’m concerned. So sorry about Sophie. I’m glad you have a cadre of companions to help ease the pain.
I so wish we could have cats. Sadly, I’m seriously allergic. About 18 years ago, my wife and I rescued five kittens from a trash bin. They were ferals who had fallen in looking for food. We managed to find loving homes homes for all five – if it hadn’t been for the allergies, though, I would have wanted to keep them all!
@rv617 Saving kittens!
@rv617 Well those little darlings are going to make your hearts overflow, which I know you already know. Of course your wife already loves them…heck I love them just from your pics…lol. Are you waiting to bring them home to name them or do you already have an idea of what you want to name them?
@rv617 I love cats and have had them off and on throughout my life but I have way to many misbehavin’ dogs.
@mfladd
@mehbee They do have names. We were going to wait, but the more we thought about it, the more two names just seemed to stick. They’ll be Agamemnon and Hector. (We already have name tags printed up in case they try to escape in the airport.)
@rv617 Excellent names, and smart to have those collars ready. Never know when they might attempt a jailbreak…lol
What is their life span? We have a 20 year old African Grey Parrot (who doesn’t think he is a parrot) who will probably outlive us. Will have to put him in the will so our kids will take care of him.
@Felton10 Gliders live 12-15 years.
African Greys have a lifespan of 50-60 yrs in captivity. OMG.
The most famous African Grey parrot was called Alex. In 1977, Dr. Irene Pepperberg purchased him from a pet store hoping to disprove that Parrots were just mimics. In the more than 30 years that she worked with him, Alex has shown amazing cognitive abilities, being able to name more than 100 objects, actions and colors. Alex was able to identify certain objects by their particular material. Sadly, Alex died in 2007.
Please post a pic of your Grey.
@mfladd We know all about Alex and what he could do. Dr. Pepperberg now works with an African Grey named Griffin. Everyone says oh that is the smartest bird you can buy and we tell them our bird is lazy. We got him when he was 10 weeks old. We give him an fried egg in the morning and a chicken leg at night. He does have bird seed and cantaloupe and banana plus what other assorted fruit we have in the house in his cage daily. Spends a lot of his time out of the cage-unless he tried to climb down and walk around the house which obviously we limit. We have 4 perches located around the house so we can bring him into the room where we are located.
Will try to post a picture if I can figure out how to do it.
@Felton10 My brother has an African Gray that does a spot on imitation of half of a phone conversation including the ringing phone. Have you seen this video?
Here’s the original of you’re not familiar with the song:
@Felton10 Go to imgur. new post. browse your computer for the pic and hit open after you have chosen it. Imgur will generate a pic you can post - right click, hit copy image location then paste here.
@sammydog01 this is why I couldn’t own a parrot. It would be highly inappropriate.
@mfladd Walter eating a crab claw
@mfladd It only posted a link and then the link didn’t appear in the reply. Do I have to establish an account first?
@Felton10 Nope, no account needed. I mouse over the photo, select copy links, copy the bb one, and paste it here. I think.
@Felton10 send me the pic at mehgoat@yahoo.com. I will post it.
@Felton10 p.s. I am not an email stalker.
@mfladd
Not a stalker? What, off your game again?
/giphy parrot stalker
@RiotDemon Our daughter when she was living at home tried to teach him so 4 letter words-but luckily it didn’t take.
These little guys/ gals are totally awesome, I almost purchased one here in my town , the gentleman was doing his sales pitch at the Eastern States Expo and I was amazed at how these little cuties interact, their personalities are incredible. Your daughter definitely has a forever friend.
Here is @Feltons10’s Grey African Parrot - “Walter, eating a crab claw.” Walter is 20yrs old. So cool!
Love all the toys!
correction: “African Grey Parrot”
another correction (damn): @Felton10
@Felton10 Does he bite? I remember, many years ago, someone who had a Macaw (I think) - the bite wasn’t a small one. Then again, I was a stranger.
@mfladd These birds are creatures of habit. Once they bite you under a certain set of circumstances, they seem to remember it and do it repeatedly. As such he like to walk over when my wife is sitting at her computer and bite her on the ankle. One time she was holding him and he bit her so hard that blood was dripping down to the floor. So my wife doesn’t pick him up anymore. One time he wouldn’t get off her hand and she had to carry him around for 45 minutes until I got home. He will bite me if I trying to put him some place he doesn’t want to go-ie in the cage or on a perch or get him off of my hand if I haven’t petted him long enough.
Strangely-he is not afraid of new people and will willingly get on their hands-guess he figures if I am putting him on someone else’s hand they must be alright. Go figure.
They basically want to sleep on you like kittens. But they have to check you out know and then.
