Must fight the urge, already have a different maker...and the Snow Cone maker arrived today. Not today, not today. Can make some serious Sorbet in these things, but don't fool yourself thinking you will save money, you will spend more in milk alone than on a pre-made carton of ice cream.
@Stallion@nadroj If you put milk in a sorbet, it's a sherbet. And I don't know of any brand of ice cream that is cheaper than the $2/gallon milk I can get here. (And if milk is more expensive elsewhere, won't the ice cream be, too?) Not to mention, you'll always be using less than 1.5 quarts of that gallon of milk, so it's always going to be way cheaper.
@nadroj@Dweezle@KamiLotus No I don't put milk in my Sorbet, I was just saying that these machines make an awesome sorbet. Ice cream around here goes as low as 2 for $4, or 2 for $5 and that's the run of the mill, but good tasking stuff like Breyers, Friendly's, Etc. Milk at its cheapest is $2.50, with the more reasonable ones being $4 per gallon or more so @KamiLotus you get what I am saying. By the time you get the milk, add in some fruit or chocolate, you are WELL beyond the 2 for $4 carton where you can pick whatever flavor you want and don't have to settle if your recipe comes out crappy.Hey, I'm ALL FOR making ice cream if you have the time and desire, and I do it myself from time to time, but there is definitely no price savings or at least not one after you factor everything in, including your time.
The whole point of ice cream is that you can just be lazy and eat it and get fatter, not that you're going to have to spend a day working to make it. Meh.
@PurplePawprints Things like this, I sleep on. Sold out in the morning? No big whoop. Still available? Get one for whoever's next on the birthday list.
I actually bought this a couple of years ago. It really is just meh. The canister has to be frozen in a very cold freezer - so kiddos - "stop getting ice, or anything, while we're chilling the bucket for 24 hours." It also doesn't make a lot of ice cream and unlike most regular ice machine makers, you can't make more. Once you use it once, you have to wait until it refreezes - 24 hours again - before you can use it or your ice cream will just be mush - if that.
Actually I'm pretty sure there's some internet startup putting the finishing touches on a 15-minute ice cream drone delivery service as we speak, so I'll pass on this, and wait for the future.
I recommend getting an ice cream container if you are going to make your own ice cream. I make a lot of frozen custard and this container works well in my freezer door.
You beer makers can throw a pint into the freezer to get rid of the water in it; at that point it's ready to incorporate into your favorite ice cream base.
And this is the best ice cream recipe book you can own; it turns up on remainder tables pretty often. It includes lots of savory recipes that are surprisingly good.
I came THIS close to buying a maker a couple days ago for... well I'm not gonna reveal that but then I had a brain fart.. Why not wait a day or so (mainly to keep convincing myself that I really need an ice cream maker... yeah, right!) and maybe, just maybe the mediocrebots would pull one out of their bag'o gifts and WHAMMO! Look what they gone and done (just for me? hardly) but anyway.. except for the brand, it was the exact one I was (trying to) drool over and it cost nowhere near that other (retail) gizmo.. And another thing, thanks for the just in case manual, you guys think of everything.. If I had a party balloon I'd pop it in your honor! Great timing Meh.. crumby-better-basketball.. (really?)
@KDemo Oh, I thought you were just joking (sorry for the come back).. No, actually out of a couple hundred visits and about 3/4 buys, I think I ran into maybe 5 (spread out) that I was thinking of buying on another site that suddenly turned up on meh.. Is that still good odds? I don't know but definitely a coincidence. (there were a few that I really wanted meh to have that never panned out)
Sounded like a pretty good birthday gift for my teenage niece (to my half-asleep brain), but I knew I'd made the right choice when . . . killer-mental-FIREFLY!
My waistline certainly doesn't need this....but of course, I had to buy TWO because of the cool color choices. Screw you, Meh. Don't you know that some of us can't resist useless items we don't need if they come in baby blue and peach?? I even ordered, came to my senses and cancelled. Then I saw that they were still available when I woke up, so I ordered again. sweltering-military-jasmine
Since I couldn't get white, my wife isn't going to allow this in the kitchen where all appliances are white. I'll put my blue unit in the storage room, I guess.
Make sure you COMPLETELY chill the ingredients before putting them in the hopper.
People are complaining that these are "small" at 1.5 quarts (JFC how much frozen cream do you need to eat?) - one of the reasons they've shrunk in the consumer market is that people were too stupid to use COLD ingredients and in the larger ice cream makers they were getting poor results.
Me? I've switched to this. I have a 2 quart Cuisinart in red that is like new (used twice) if anyone wants to buy it.
My wife made some strawberry frozen yoghourt yesterday. Since she makes the yoghourt, too, the cost is about $1.50 per batch for fresh artisanal frozen yoghourt. We have a Cuisinart maker we got a few years ago.
I need one in every color! The 3 item limit really stuck it to me this time, or rather, to the children at the orphanage who will only receive a modest portion of dessert. When little Oliver comes up to me and says, "please sir, may I have some more?" I'll have to tell him that he could have had more if Meh allowed me to purchase an adequate amount of machinery. Sadly, he will have to continue to be an orphan with only a slightly satisfied palate.
I'm going to give it a shot. I noticed recently that my favorite ice cream bar changed packaging. I didn't think anything of it until me an my fam tasted them. I found out that they removed all egg products from their recipe. We decided to assume it is due to the egg shortage this year and hope its not a permanent change. (It prob is) so I will give a meh attempt to duplicate with the proper ingredients and this device. So.. Thanks @narfcake?
@mellowirishgent What are you talking about? Also, there are lots of things in life that you'll have to wait longer than two weeks for. You should probably get over it now or you'll give yourself a heart attack if you continue to get this worked up over it.
@PurplePawprints Ummm Im not worked up just i dont wait in lines and i dont wait 2 weeks for something to be delivered making it 3 weeks not worked up at all just lol at your comment lot of effort why are you getting so worked up about my choices in life and shopping? have a nice weekend i know i will
@mellowirishgent Your overuse of exclamation points and lack of punctuation tell a different story. You seem less than mellow, to tell the truth. Patience is an important attribute to have in life; it's much less stressful and you get what you want eventually (like cheap sorbet makers!)
@mellowirishgent Honestly, as I've read your replies in other threads and taking into consideration your username, the first thing that comes to mind is the word "oxymoron". KuoH
@mellowirishgent I don't work at meh, so I hope to come across as an unbiased peer consumer... Nobody wants to wait 3 weeks. I get it. Do you believe that Meh is holding on to your ice cream maker for their amusement? Do you believe in Meh as a company, or do you just need an ice cream maker? There are plenty of places to buy one if it's urgent. I'll help you pick one out if you'd like. This company represents more than just selling stuff. I like to participate in a community that understands that. How do you get upset about the ship date of a deal you just found out about 18 hours ago?
@PurplePawprints Lucky Mine is currently in Allentown, Pa. Which if it moves this weekend to the Post office I'll get it Monday, If It doesn't I'll get it Tuesday/Wednesday... It says delivered by the 10th. Usually it's a day or 2 earlier... However it says "delivered" a day before it actually is.
@cranky1950 You did see up at the top where Meh was nice enough to scan a copy of the manual, right? The only reason these are rated so low is because of the lack of manuals. Thankfully, Meh helped us out with that.
@PurplePawprints No I didn't see it but I copied a cusinart recipe book. After reading the complaints I figured out that you needed to really cool the mixture down before you tried to freeze it so I made a sorbet that way and the machine worked fine. Frustrating that the manual is not on the oster website though.
@cranky1950 Yeah, Oster really dropped the ball. I'm surprised after all the complaints that they didn't put the manual online themselves, but at least Meh did it for us. And yeah, it seems like the only way this will work correctly is if everything starts off super chilled. I'm glad your sorbet turned out well!
Got mine earlier in the week. Works as advertised. The first batch reversed the paddles in about 20 minutes. Tasted great, but soft.
Second batch never reversed the paddles, but I did add a touch of everclear (no vodka) to make it softer. A few hours in the freezer things were solid and very scoopable.
I made the third batch (finished the prepared liquid). Didn't add everclear, but paddles didn't reverse. While the freezer tank didn't have any sloshing liquid, it was only in the freezer about 8 hours after the 2nd batch. I added it to the first batch in the freezer.
Very pleased so far. (I also did get the manual!)
I used a "simple 3-item chocolate ice cream" recipe.
14oz can of sweetened condensed milk
2 cups heavy cream
2/3 cup chocolate syrup.
Broke it up into 750ml (about 0.8 quarts) units.. I bet you can go a full 4 cups / 1 quart. Wasn't close to overloading the bowl.
I used mine for the first time today, following the instructions exactly... and it didn't make ice cream. The liquid is still that... liquid. A complete waste of money.
@theredmasque I cooled off the ingredients in the freezer before using mine. I also kept the container in my chest freezer that is like -5. I hope that helps. I have made like 5 batches. The end result is kinda like soft serve so I finish it in the freezer and its great.

I'm too lazy to make ice cream! :D Meh!
@deputyderp No joke. It's $3.50 for a half gallon at publix this week.
Must fight the urge, already have a different maker...and the Snow Cone maker arrived today. Not today, not today. Can make some serious Sorbet in these things, but don't fool yourself thinking you will save money, you will spend more in milk alone than on a pre-made carton of ice cream.
@Stallion you put dairy in sorbet?
@Stallion @nadroj If you put milk in a sorbet, it's a sherbet. And I don't know of any brand of ice cream that is cheaper than the $2/gallon milk I can get here. I thought it said oyster ice cream at first.
@KDemo Someone's been watching Iron Chef.
@kasubot Fukui San?
@kasubot - Did they seriously? Can't imagine it. I only like oysters fresh and raw.
@KDemo Dolley Madison's favorite flavor!
@SteveOOO Yes?
The whole point of ice cream is that you can just be lazy and eat it and get fatter, not that you're going to have to spend a day working to make it. Meh.
@Portlis What? Can't hear you over the sound of all this ice cream I'm eating.
In for three! Rebuilding my gifting box one purchase at a time. Thanks, Meh!

@rhcurry02 thanks for talking me down
@rhcurry02 most regular ice cream makers are 1.5 or 2 quarts. This is pretty average.
Soon...
(untidy-hopeless-floor)
@Moose Oh man, that looks amazing.
@rschauer At least.
@Moose Well, that explains why the gf recently bought a bottle of Kraken. And now... envious-deprived-iguana
@Moose Kraken Rum. FTW!
Dear meh.com,
Please bring back the speaker docks. It was more fun to complain about Friday that way. :(
Sincerely,
Everyone
@jjohns71
Agreed, I'll be pretty serious once I reach the point where I'm mixing vodka into my ice cream.
@awk Bleah. I'd just as soon mix in Mobil Premium.
@awk Try this http://www.bojongourmet.com/2013/06/roasted-cherry-vanilla-ice-cream-with.html
@metageist I just made that, just without the cherry, the vanilla, the chocolate, and the ice cream. It was delicious.
@droopus http://www.hark.com/clips/qnydgxdnhs-drinking-gasoline
Out of the package! Cones and bowls slow down ice cream delivery.
Sheesh.
But seriously now, props to whoever photoshopped the black twizzler/blueberry/jalapeno/candy corn irk.
Respect
@jjohns71 It kind of freeked me out
Bring me the head of Irk in a bowl
@jjohns71 - Kind of looks like an Irk peep.

I recommend getting an ice cream container if you are going to make your own ice cream. I make a lot of frozen custard and this container works well in my freezer door.
@metageist What if they're selling that tomorrow?
@Cappo there is no such thing as too much ice cream, so I say buy as many as you can and fill them all.
Obligatorily pointing out that "It's not June yet!"
Although it no doubt will be by the time it's delivered.
Also "obligatorily" may or may not be a word.
Meh. I have this in my kitchen instead.
@j8048188 Seriously??
@j8048188 When I was kid, me and every kid I knew would have been in love with you. Maybe, a little still .
@j8048188 Oh my God! Can I come over???
@j8048188
@mfladd I've got it running today for my brother's graduation party. Come on over if you're in Utah :)
@hollboll
@mick The little neighbor kids sometimes ask me when I get home if we have any ice cream. It's heartbreaking to tell them no.
@j8048188 Enjoy the graduation, And thanks, but that would be quite a trek from Maryland.
Man, that page on that fancy archive.org sales site says THEY'RE ALREADY SOLD OUT of the Cuisinart. Freakin bait and switch.
Hmm, I bought the green one. Can't decide if it was the best choice, but it was greenest and I took it. ancient-handsomely-harmony

clicking through that old woot link actually got me really really nostalgic. ahhh vintage woot..

@KDemo I'm sorry but I can't access the internet.
@unkabob -?
I thought you had such good luck that anything you shopped for would turn up on meh.
@KDemo Oh, I thought you were just joking (sorry for the come back).. @lutopia
I bought one & thought these would sell out in about ten minutes. I was wrong. Maybe if you offered a machine that makes fried ice cream?
@gertiestn .. Fried ice cream is a dangerous food at least for me as the bones always get stuck between my teeth.

@Pufferfishy I received one of those kitchenaids for Christmas -- it is still in the box :) Does it work well??
@mikibell It's exactly the same as any of these "freeze and stir" units. Works great, albeit I've only used it once so far.....
My wife made some strawberry frozen yoghourt yesterday. Since she makes the yoghourt, too, the cost is about $1.50 per batch for fresh artisanal frozen yoghourt. We have a Cuisinart maker we got a few years ago.

Good timing - today in class I'm demoing vanilla ice cream. I think I helped sell some machines 😃
Can't wait to get mine and make some ice cream!!!

@scfd0766 I'm in NW Florida and recieved mine today as well.
@mellowirishgent Just adding to the data... mine shipped 6/1 and arrived 6/5/2015.
Geez no manual no wonder they were 18 bucks. There rated 2 stars on the Oster website. these are truly meh!

@theredmasque Wow that is a rather long thermal cut off time... It works again.
