Girl Scouts have millions of unsold cookies
I could go for discounted cookies.
What’s your favorite?
Thin mints and Tagalog.
Two decades ago they had a strawberry one that was amazing… But I’m guessing they’re stale by now.
@IWUJackson in Tagalog, Girl Scout thin mint is Babaeng Scout manipis na mint
@IWUJackson They will be stale anyway shortly after meh sends them.
Thin mints.
Have no particularly originally taste here, tho I like them all.
My favorite is: the ones with the whole in the middle, along with the use of some coconut. Maybe these are tagalogs?
Yes, Meh definitely needs to get in the GSC game. That is is brilliant idea!
@elfunkman Samoas.
/image girl scouts samoas
@elfunkman @narfcake Kroger has a Kroger branded cookie that tastes just like Samoas and one that taste just like thin mints they sell year round… so when the Girl scouts aren’t selling we still get our fix
@elfunkman @narfcake these are the GOAT
@elfunkman @narfcake @tinamarie1974
We have two girls in scouts. This is what our garage looks like for part of the year because of Girl Scout cookies. Because of COVID, we didn’t have it this year so I can only imagine how many boxes are sat going stale.
@elfunkman @narfcake @sillyheathen omg, that is an insane # of cookies
@elfunkman @narfcake @tinamarie1974 that was actually a lighter year.
@elfunkman @narfcake @tinamarie1974
These were just the pallets of thin mints just for our service unit on depot day last year.
@elfunkman @narfcake @sillyheathen holy crap!!
@elfunkman I hope you aren’t eating Tagalogs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_people
@Limewater It’s like the people who say they eat Kiwis. I hope they mean kiwifruit because Kiwis (human and bird) are illegal to eat. Were GS Tagalongs once called Tagalogs? That might explain the confusion.
@Limewater @rockblossom If you are ever confused by a person’s intention when they say they are going to “eat a kiwi”, you are 100 percent, without a doubt, hanging out with the wrong crowd.
Then again, who am I to judge? Maybe the “Tasty Good Cannibals” could be the next hit cookie. I’m not sure what will be in it, but I’m pretty sure it will somehow taste like chicken.
@elfunkman @Limewater I do love my soylent green but the Filipinos are safe. They’re typically kind of gamey for my taste.
@elfunkman @Limewater @rockblossom
We LOVE eating kiwis here!
They’re SO tasty!
@narfcake @sillyheathen @tinamarie1974 I don’t claim to know what comes after this life, but if there is a heaven, I like to think it looks something like that photo. Who knew pallets of Thin Mints could evoke such joy and happiness (Cookie Monster aside)?
@sillyheathen
You mentioned the cookies might be going stale over time.
Are you/your daughters allowed to sell them?
@Koolhandjoe I’ll have to try the Kroger ones. Clover Valley samoas knockoffs from Dollar General are very close to the real thing, only a little less crisp on the cookie inside. And the Dollar Tree thin mints are made by the same bakery as ABC Bakers. They taste the same even if the cookie inside is light colored instead of chocolate brown.
@elfunkman Long ago, someone I worked with was planning a trip to NZ, and asked whether they could order fried or barbequed kiwi. I said that they would be disappointed, as only the wings are edible.
@f00l sadly cookie selling season is over. Our SU wasn’t allowed to do in person delivery so we had to rely on online sales strictly. My daughters both usually sell 500-1500 boxes each per season. They both only got around 100/ea this year.
@sillyheathen
I bet your family could sell lots of them here. If only GSA would allow your daughters to do so.
: (
@djslack @Koolhandjoe @narfcake @sillyheathen @tinamarie1974
Aldi is also a good source for knock off GS cookies (pseudo tagalongs and samoas etc.) year round. They run about $1 to $1.25 a box… They are pretty good.
@chienfou @djslack @Koolhandjoe @narfcake @sillyheathen I JUST tried the chocolate peanut butter ones last week. They are delicious!!
@tinamarie1974
@chienfou hey I listen! Well at least to those whose judgement I trust. So I listen to you
@tinamarie1974
I know… “I tried to tell y’all” … and I succeeded!
“The whole in the middle” sound like a Zen koan.
@st_ellis Ha! Admittedly I had to google “Zen koan”, but that is some professional grade, fun with a typo work right there. I give you all the stars.
Since no one has mentioned it, dibs on all trefoils and dos-i-dos.
Enjoyment tip: don’t look at the nutritional label. You’ve been warned.
I was a Girl Scout, but damn those cookies are over -priced. $5 for a little box, when there are now many generic brands that taste great and cost less for more in the box. I’m a big fan of the Carmel delights (somoas in some places) and Walmart has a great value version that is actually better IMO. They also have their version of thin mints and the peanut butter ones that are coated in chocolate. I can get 2 generic packages for less than 1 GS box, plus I can get them year round.
Yes I know supporting the Girl Scouts is the point, but considering I don’t know any Girl Scouts and I rarely see any of them selling (they typically sell in front of Walmart on weekends and I avoid Walmart on weekends). But if meh had some for sale I’d be tempted, but with this weather I don’t know that they would ship well. It would be a pile of goo by the time it got to me.
@remo28 also, I’m told the local troop only gets 50 cents of the box. That seems like a terrible fundraiser. I usually get mine at Aldi - they’ve got good substitute for the two I prefer. That or keebler grasshopper cookies. Name brand, but still half the cost or less if on sale.
Also, if you ask the leader of a troop, they may take a direct donation. One year I asked and she said there was a special fund for one of their girls who was especially poor. I gave $100 for her and bought my generic cookies. Someone did that for me multiple times when I was a kid in a single-parent home of three kids earning less than $10k in the '90s, so I was happy to pass it on.
@remo28 I try to look at this way (the same as with the Scout popcorn sales)… I’m donating an amount of money to the troop. For that donation I am getting a box of cookies or a bag of popcorn as a thank you. It’s so much harder when you’re looking at it as an equitable exchange of money for goods.
Do I sense a GScookieDrop.com in the near future?
@mike808 that would be epic!
For those worrying about the cookies going stale, I once had a box of Thin Mints for several years. I tried them and they tasted exactly the same as the new ones!
@Kyeh OMG I don’t even want to think what they were made of for that to be possible.
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh
Freeze-dried twinkies?
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh @mike808 Maybe some of the same ingredients that McDonald’s uses for their hamburgers.

@Kidsandliz @mike808 @narfcake
Maybe it’s this secret ingredient
Did you know…
more than one bakery makes cookies for the girl scouts? they don’t have the same number in a box, they can taste a bit different and there was awhile, not sure it it still is true, that you could get the same cookie under 2 different names?
the choices can be different region to region?
As of 2020, the interweb states:
In all, there are seven Girl Scout cookies that have noticeable differences between bakers: Thin Mints, S’mores, Caramel deLites/Samoas, Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos, Shortbread/Trefoils, and Lemonades/Savannah Smiles
and this is a bit dated but

@Cerridwyn Fun fact In NJ and some other states depending on what part of the state you order from you can get from either of the 2 bakeries, ABC or Little Brownie. So you could sample them all! NJ actually has one county that has both depending on troop!
@readnj
had that hear in the past too, where one council got from bakery A and another from B and I had co-workers with kids in both councils.
I bought GS cookies this year and they seemed half the size they used to be. Overpriced to begin with but I wanted to support Scouting. Direct donation is better if they only get fifty cents per box. My grands cheer and softball teams sell flavored popcorn for $15 a bag. Very tasty but worth about $5 at most. Grands = purchase but this year they added $6.95 shipping fee instead of in person delivery. Nope even for my baby.
@dyounghbic GS is weird about direct donation. We’re allowed to accept them at cookie booths but not allowed to solicit them. So if you really want to support them, just donate the money to a troop directly.
Dairy Queen is doing their part. One of this Month’s Seasonal Blizzards is GS Thin Mints. While GS cookies are terribly overpriced, it’s hard to turn them down. I usually buy a few boxes but tell them to donate them to the troops returning overseas. At DFW, they send them to the USO lounge at the airport. Local troops have been contributing to food banks as well. I have seen all the knock offs, particularly at Big Lots and Aldi but have not tried any of them.
