The silicone scar gels and tapes actually work, though not at the same rate for everyone. I’m lucky; my surgeons tell me that I heal exceptionally well, so I seldom really need to resort to these, but as I’ve got some, I use it anyway when I have an incision to deal with. (And having fair skin with a history of spending way too much time outdoors back in the '60s and '70s, I now get skin cancers more often than I want to admit.)
@Perkalicious Silicone is only really good during the healing window of a wound, and it has about a 90-day window before diminishing returns makes it ineffective.
Retinol works for reducing scars, but it takes months (or even years) of regular application to see solid results
@mokiejovis Although the most effective time to use scar tape or sheets is during the first 90 days after the wound closes completely, old keloid scars can sometimes be slowly reduced using the technique as well. My deceased partner saw a significant reduction in an old and very prominent keloid scar from an emergency surgery after a traffic collision, but it took about eight months for it to be reduced enough that she was satisfied with leaving the rest unremediated. I’d say that the reduction was on the order of 70% of the width and elevation originally present, with a complete elimination of the puckering that had been obvious before that. The scar was over 20 years old at the time she began trying to reduce it. Potential results are wildly variable according to the plastic surgeon that she consulted, and many people will see little or no effect. But he considered it to be worth trying, and it was a far less costly solution than more surgery would have been.
@Perkalicious iirc, there is some benefit to keeping skin moist as it’s healing to reduce scarring but I’ve been told by my dermatologist that a tub of Vaseline will work (but not Neosporin, that shit is bad for your skin, throw that shit away)
@heyitslauren Neosporin is for brief use where a shallow wound is not possible to fully clean; it should be removed and not repeated when the would is properly cleaned, as soon as possible. Its usage is preferable to allowing an infection to take hold, but that’s the limit of its applicability. It’s also not suitable for deep wounds due to the difficulty of cleaning it back out, along with the fact that its presence will prevent a deep wound from closing. (Things you learn when you read stuff published elsewhere.)
@macromeh a metaphorical backhoe has worked pretty good for me! Just bury that shit deep inside and never let it up. And a real backhoe worked good on the biggest source after he choked on his own vomit.

My family has had a pretty bad relationship with knives. So I’m basically sold on the scar gel alone.
/showme a man with ugly scars on his face applying healing gel and tape.
I’m tempted, because I used to be a cutter, but it sounds like I’d have to get a lot of this stuff.
@violue I know I’m an internet stranger, but I see you and I hope you’re doing alright.
This is going to be the perfect companion to the Wingman Body Groomer I purchased last week!

Is this a good substitute for Fruit Gel?
@OnionSoup Only in margaritas.
The tape is probably legit. This gel (not being a silicone gel) is probably a placebo effect at best.
Decent price for the tape, though, depending how much you get. Zooming on the pic looks like a 10ft roll…?

@Kidsandliz Latex appliances FTW.
Do these products work to alleviate emotional scars?
(Asking for a friend.)
