@Barney That’s how I feel this morning. I had to break the ice on the little pond in the back yard where I have the bird bath. The fountain was almost completely frozen over. I think all the birds in the neighborhood are eating at our feeders. Little darlings. They make me smile.
It’s pretty cozy up thisaway. Not quite California levels of cozy, but it’ll do. I’m putting coffee on, and in a few hours I’m getting a doctor-mandated massage! In a cozy massage nook! Bless you, 2017, you weren’t all bad.
The bridges are worthless as long as it’s still misting at 28F (local bank) or 23F (WeatherBug).
I just bought gas at a covered pump. In the 15 min it took me to buy coffee etc inside the store, my driver’s door handle tried real hard to freeze shut.
But I won that fight.
My windows and windshields are ok. My side mirrors: I scraped for about 10 min. Still useless.
No point in doing more. Still misting.
Hey, Northerners (for future reference):
what is the trick to getting a layer of ice off the side mirrors?
Maybe I have a terrible scraper or something.
@communist Note: sometimes, the aerosol works better. Or at least it won’t leak. Or both. I forget. But it definitely won’t leak, unlike the spray bottle kind, so it has that going for it.
@narfcake
yep
shoes is what gets me
work is sending me to Wisconsin in MID JANUARY and my feet that haven’t seen shoes in well years are afraid of the dark
@f00l I kinda gave up looking for the opposite. Blame the goat Google. I did at least use something that was licensed, so there’s that, at least.
The weather will get to you … eventually. Give it a few months, okay? As @kidsandliz can attest to, I’m extremely slow when it comes to shipping stuff.
@CaptAmehrican oooh oooh I see you have the goat badge - such a deserving soul (grin - hey I was a crappy goat - I told people I didn’t have time as I moved, started a new temp job, etc. in the middle of all that so don’t worry not everyone goes above and beyond).
Hmm now it is your fault that the snow is blowing parallel to the ground and my wiper fluid sprayer is still frozen and I have to go out to get stuff for mom.
It’s our anniversary, and I had bought a pretty sweater dress to wear out tonight, but it’s too cold here. It’s pants or not leaving the house. Which would also be okay if it weren’t for the children.
This was southwest Missouri this morning, and it’s supposed to get even colder tonight. It might break the record low of -5, and I plan to stay home all night. Unfortunately, I’m on call at work from 10:30p-6:00a so they may have other ideas.
Oh, and it did not get up to 18 degrees either. Only made it to 15 so far and the sun is setting soon so I’m guessing that’s as warm as it’s getting today. We blame Canada for this, right?
@melwin I live close to the Twin Cities where it is now -30 in windchill. In June, July, Aug. and even in Sept.it can be very hot and humid + 100 heat index.
For health reasons I can’t go out in the cold or heat.
I hate it, it SUCKS!! IBM and the Mayo Clinic are some of the reasons that people move to MN.
It’s like 16 right now with a low of 9 tonight. Windshield cracked all the way across. Check. Windshield wiper fluid sprayer thingy frozen thus blocked. Check. Bag to fill with clean snow to put in the back since I have to stop frequently to clean off said windshield with snow in order to be able to see out of it. Check. Frozen dirty salty slush all over the floor in the front of the car due to feet (needed a boat in one parking lot) and in the back due to mom’s wheeled walker thing. Check. Ready for new year’s eve from the comfort of mom’s apartment because now there is no way I am going downtown to stand out in the square and freeze just to watch a 500 pound popcorn ball be dropped. Check.
@Kidsandliz That sounds like my car too. Wiper fluid sprayer thingy always freezes. Stupid car. When I drive in to work, I hope I get behind a large vehicle throwing up slush that I can use to clean my windshield.
@melwin I have no clue if they eat it. I’d imagine it would be filthy by the end of it (and due to that is was (and is snowing) frozen and or wet/slushy or both by the time it hit the ground.
@mehnyblooms Yeah I am just so looking forward to driving 1125 miles tomorrow (and Wed) that way with probably 900 of those miles in below freezing weather. Plan to travel with a bag of clean snow in a bag to clean it off as I go along as I already am having to do that here. Hesitate to throw water on it since the windshield cracked all the way across the other day and I am afraid the temp differential will make a bad situation worse. Sucks.
Freezing drizzle around Asheville, I-40 is closed many accidents and folks stranded in their vehicles. Stupid brine runs off a few minutes after application.
The mist stopped. Surface roads never froze. The heavily traveled bridges had not accumulated much. If you follow the tracks other drivers have made, it’s OK now. Only the little bridges are really a problem. And it’s so cold that most partiers will stay home.
Which means that those who go out tonite have mostly their own drunkenness potential to be wary of; people who are sober and use minimum caution should be fine, as long as they don’t encounter someone who isn’t/doesn’t.
@f00l We did a road trip once from U of Rochester when I was an undergrad to see a spectacularly frozen over Niagara Falls (yeah college students do stupid things sometimes just for the heck of it - but it was incredible).

My viking blood has gotten quite thin while basking in the Florida sun for all these years. I whine about taking a shower because it’s too cold in my house. (It’s like 67 in the house, so “cold” is relative).

Today was the fourth day in a week that started out more than 20° below zero. The upside? I was able to test that this meh product worked. One moment of amazing in 24 hours of fucking freezing.
It’s been below freezing for several days here in South Arkansas. Pipes are frozen at the house we just moved from. I reaaaaally hope they don’t bust cuz i cannot afford that right now!! Low of 11° tonight. High today was 26 i think.
@communistjack yes…and the cabinet door open…moron who plumbed the house ran the stupid pipe through an open crawl space… We normally catch it before it freezes (now that we know it is a problem)…last time it froze/burst when we had a house full of people for my daughter’s baptism almost 15 years ago!
It is on the long list of things to fix.
Yeah, tell me about it.
@Barney That’s how I feel this morning. I had to break the ice on the little pond in the back yard where I have the bird bath. The fountain was almost completely frozen over. I think all the birds in the neighborhood are eating at our feeders. Little darlings. They make me smile.
@mehnyblooms You have a kind heart. The birds are lucky to have you taking care of them.
I know what you mean. Cars had frost on them this morning.
@Cythwulf that looks like frost and a bit of light precipitation, ne?
@jbartus Sou desu ne.
I know what you mean. Cats had frost on them this morning.
@phendrick

Yesterday they changed the forecast to say far less chance of freezing rain. Then almost zero chance.
Then we got freezing rain
Roads around here are kinda useless at the moment. Dallas is doing a bit better
(With very light traffic)
@f00l
The bridges are worthless as long as it’s still misting at 28F (local bank) or 23F (WeatherBug).

@f00l Maybe you should have stayed home, you stupid
f00lidiot.@f00l during the summer when winter stuff is 75% off i bought 6 bottles of this stuff
a couple sprays and a min or 2 later the ice is melted
@communist I read somewhere that you can make that. Vinegar and something else? I dunno. Don’t think I’ll be needing it any time soon here in Florida.
Edit: it’s isopropyl alcohol and water.

it has like 10% of the capcity of the normal spray bottle
literrally 1 min of spraying the aerosol can and its empty
big waste of money even if it was only 50cents after the discount
Sorry.
@narfcake
Tempted to reply with something you’d have to edit, Your High Fascistiness, Sir.
@f00l I said sorry! Yeesh!
@narfcake
kinda cool out there isn’t it narf
@Cerridwyn I know! I’m wearing TWO t-shirts right now because it’s so bone chilling!

Apologies.
I am accusing you of certain things things:
Things that not only are you not guilty of, Your Imperiousness; also:
I am accusing you of things you could never be guilty of, because those things are not within the bounds of your character.
I am preparing my insanity defense. All I doing well?
Is there a t-shirt for that?
Also I am incredibly envious of your current warm weather. So I’m acting out.
Love ya.

I need a shirt that implies the opposite, Your Dictatorial Tendency-ous-ness
The shirt will need to help me out with my plea, when I am wearing a straight jacket, and standing in the dock.
PS. I’ll quit coming up with these faux titles for you, if you agree to send your current weather this way.
@narfcake By mid January, the highs in Wisconsin will be in the mid 20’s. Bask in the warmth!
@f00l I kinda gave up looking for the opposite. Blame

Why does it say Dec 31, 2018? That’s what I call an extended forecast.
@msklzannie
Good catch. I think that was from weather.com
I guess we can go ahead and plan for weather on NYE in 2018.
And my pipes are frozen…phuf
@tinamarie1974 well that sucks

Or should we send them a few truckloads of candy corn?
@rtjhnstn Why not both?
@melwin
There’s a song for that.
@melwin Let’s air drop the candy corn! … Wait! …
That would be the response if N. Korea sent us such unpleasant weather.
@rtjhnstn We’re going to need more than a few truckloads of candy corn to take care of North Korea. Kim Jong-un will just eat his way out of it.

I’m just gonna leave this here.
One of the reasons that Times Square is not in MN.
@growyoungagain Why do people live there? What’s it like there in July?
@melwin I live close to the Twin Cities where it is now -30 in windchill. In June, July, Aug. and even in Sept.it can be very hot and humid + 100 heat index.

@callow I was out to dinner when I posted that. I actually live in Havertown. Still about the same time I’m sure.
@cinoclav Pretty much.
@callow I used to work at Phx Hospital. I kind of miss the drive through VF park on the way.
@cinoclav Small world. My brother in law works there too.

Freezing drizzle around Asheville, I-40 is closed many accidents and folks stranded in their vehicles. Stupid brine runs off a few minutes after application.

A gorgeous partially frozen Niagara Falls, taken yesterday.
@f00l We did a road trip once from U of Rochester when I was an undergrad to see a spectacularly frozen over Niagara Falls (yeah college students do stupid things sometimes just for the heck of it - but it was incredible).
I just went to the store wearing flip flops, exercise shorts, and a t-shirt.
Be totally jealous of my fashion choices.
@RiotDemon
Am.
@RiotDemon But were you WARM?
It’s a balmy, but rainy 40 degrees here. Eldest daughter says it’s 8 degrees. She’s in for a surprise when she sees her gas bill next month. She just bought her first house, and keeping a home warm in RI during the winter is notoriously expensive.
Does Meh want to sell some room heaters soon?
@LaVikinga Gas bills are better than electric bills. Running room heaters are really expensive!
@LaVikinga yep, was fine. There was absolutely no wind.
@narfcake I hope so, for her sake. They’ve gone from a basement apartment to a two story home. I’m happy for them, but there’s that aggravated parent that really would enjoy the opportunity to say "NOW do you understand why we said put on a sweater & some long pants when you were living at home?"
My viking blood has gotten quite thin while basking in the Florida sun for all these years. I whine about taking a shower because it’s too cold in my house. (It’s like 67 in the house, so “cold” is relative).
@RiotDemon Yep. It’s been amazing here. Best Christmas vacation weather we’ve had in a while. No need for a sweater or jacket. Back to my flip flops.
3 degrees…snuggled with a babydoll…best New Year’s EVER!
Feel free to bring some of that here in South Florida where it feels warmer than 65.
@JT954 I’m assuming you’re in the area code you’re carrying around?
@RiotDemon Not as of 4 years ago. But I am within driving distance if I wanted to go back.
@JT954 ah ok. I moved more north. Technically we are all within driving distance if we are still in Florida.
Yeah. Fuck this weather.
@Alien88
Damn.
It was 80º here yesterday. 71º today.
I’m in Hawaii for a belated anniversary celebration, and it’s been the best life choice ever.
@Jamileigh17 so did you have to taunt us like that ??? Lucky you unlucky us
Can confirm the 0 degrees in Boston.
@medz couldn’t handle that
@medz yeah that is around what they said for here - feels like something unprintable below zero.
As a side note I once worked where we had to use outhouses in 40 to 60 below (and that would be F not C however 40 below is roughly the same in both). We kept the seat indoors. We drew straws to see whose turn it was to knock over the pyramid down the hole… It was seriously cold.

It is on the long list of things to fix.
According to the nightly news, a local epidemic of frozen and broken pipes out there.
So far looks good here.
I assume that’s a far worse prob further north? Or do the northerland buildings have better heating and insulation?
@f00l
yes
in my part of town, all the pipes are insulated
