Mine is a 100% purebred, inbred, 15 year old blind land-seal. I don’t give a crap about purebred, in fact, I wouldn’t own one if I had the choice. Fate gave me our current pupper.
Mutts are the best, for all sorts of health reasons. Celebrate those “designer breeds” before they become popular. Love mutts.
@capnjb How’s Caitlin doing this summer? She has been missing from these pages. (Her choice? Has she reached the age yet where she disowns her parents for a few years?)
@phendrick She is having a great summer. We’ve been able to get away a few times this summer. She still tolerates her parents. School starts back up in about 4 weeks but we’re getting away for one more weekend soon. She’s going to be playing travel ball this fall, so there’s that… and driving lessons are starting soon. Time is fleeting.
Lucy! About 4 years old, saved from a shelter by my younger brother. We don’t know what she is, but genealogy test said part German Shepherd and I bet there’s some Shiba Inu in there, too. She had a severe autoimmune disorder about a year ago and we thought we might lose her, but she is now back to her usual hyperactive self.
@tinamarie1974 Thanks! We love her, she has so much character and personality. She is very standoffish with new people, but if you talk to her and pay attention to her, she warms up quick. She became super attached to my boyfriend when he was staying with us, and missed him when he went back home to the UK.
Sunny is about 10 months old now. She loves to attack water and sleep on the couch. I’d still guess some hound and terrier in her, but who knows. She’s just a sweet pupper.
This is Kate
She’s a Corgi/Heeler mix (aka Cowboy Corgi) and just turned 11 in May.
She’s my best good buddy, goofball extraordinaire, retired farm dog, and stealer of treats/hearts. I can’t imagine life without her
My baby, Chloe, approx 16 yrs old, still acts like a puppy sometimes. Beagle/terrier mix (DNA test confirmed beagle & said Staffordshire bull terrier…huh?)
@ircon96 There is a place at reddit where people post photos and DNA results, and the vast majority of shelter dogs have something in the pitbull neighborhood. I’m a bit afraid to do DNA on my dog, still debating. Chloe is adorable.
@ircon96@sammydog01 you should do it. It is really interesting and may help you understand her personality/traits a bit more clearly. It is also interesting if her siblings are identified and the owners have posted pics. Several of Charlies siblings/cousins are there and he does not look like one of them. They are all short haired. I clearly got the cutest pup!
Also, regardless of the reaults you will lover her just the same!
@sammydog01@tinamarie1974 Thanks! Her cuteness has helped her survive this long! Lol… It’s true, it IS very interesting & informative. I NEVER would have guessed a bully breed, we always figured Russell terrier was most likely, given her size & body shape. It certainly was a shock! She came up north on a transport from Arkansas, so who knows what goes on down there…

I live in MS and a lot of our dogs and cats are sent north too. No neuter or spay laws and so a ton of unwanted animals. Shelters are way over crowded. Not enough people adopt them locally because at shelters it costs money, people are screened and there are so many free or almost free pups and young dogs (and cats) offered on the local forums. I volunteer in a shelter that is packed. 300+ dogs and around 180 cats. Over crowded and a number of van loads go north each month to several shelters. Barely makes a dent in the shelter numbers as so many new ones come in.
Unfortunately the majority headed north are either young (as that is what is wanted and they are placed faster) or small dogs. They will take a few older or bigger dogs or ones that look nearly purebred, but not enough of those to clear out who is housed in the shelters (and the shelter I volunteer in made taking some of those a condition of getting most of our pups). I’d make a rough guess that a forth of what is languishing in the shelter resemble pit bulls and related breeds and/or dogs that are aggressive and so unlikely to be placed anywhere (it is a no kill shelter).
@ircon96@tinamarie1974 My girl came from the pound in a county that made the news that week for having a KKK recruitment rally on the courthouse steps. The SPCA was full of pit bulls from the city and hounds from the country. I went with a hound. Probably a hound. She kills small furry animals like a hound. RUN SQUIRRELS, RUN.
@Kidsandliz@sammydog01@tinamarie1974 Yes, I’ve always adopted larger adult dogs rather than puppies, but due to health issues with both of us, i convinced my late husband to go with a smaller one when we got Chloe. Of course, he fell in love just like i knew he would. Our co-op has a ban on pit bulls because of our insurance company, typical breed-specific .
We had a rescue dog years ago, before DNA tests became a thing, a real sweetie named Emma, who we figured was part pibble. She looked a lot like @remo28’s cutie, Sunny, except Emma’s nose was red & she had a slightly heavier head/jaws. I would definitely go for another under-the-radar pibble mix, but they tend to be larger than what i can handle these days, which makes me sad, because you’re right, we have WAY too many of those in our shelters up here, too.
@ircon96@Kidsandliz@sammydog01@tinamarie1974 I looked at my county’s shelter’s site recently, and while there fortunately weren’t many dogs available, all but a couple were pit bulls or pattie mixes.
The late, great Raven was a Chow mix. I adopted her when she was 8, and we had almost 6 years together. She was the sweetest, most chill dog you could imagine, except when we were in the drive-thru at Starbucks for her pup cup (second picture). I still miss her so much.
Ginger, chiweenie
Inherited her from when my mom passed, 7 years ago.
From vet records she’s 20 years old and still going strong!
@lonocat What do you feed her? I’m adding that to my diet!

@capnjb I met my birth mom when I was 33.

She also loves being held!
@PooltoyWolf aawww she is adorable!!

@PooltoyWolf @tinamarie1974 In your first picture, she looks like she is concentrating on doing a mind probe.
Did it work?
@phendrick @tinamarie1974 If the goal was to get picked up for snuggles, yes.

@remo28 Both of our dogs attack water, too.
@remo28 Great pictures! She’s a real cutie.
@remo28 Whoa! I’ve never seen a dog projectile vomit like that!

My cat is a “mutt,” and I am too, although I prefer to talk about “hybrid vigor.”

Look at this sweet baby working it.on the runway
@tinamarie1974 The look s/he gives the camera at the end of the second costume says it all.
