So in the relaxing thread a few of us do nail art. I am neither good nor do i have long nails but figured a thread would be nice. I just finished a pac manicure.
So… You spent time doing something which people wouldn’t recognize (whether you intended for that or not).
I would imagine that doing it for your toes was a bit harder than the hands.
@PlacidPenguin I did it on my feet first. I realized it was completely unrecognizable when I stood up and looked down.
So I did my hands, which people did notice.
I would do stuff on my toes fairly often since I wear flip flops often.
Maybe this thread will encourage me to do my nails more often again. In the meantime, I’ll randomly upload older stuff I’ve done. My nails are really short right now.
When I first introduced myself here I uploaded these galaxy nails that I had done. I still love them so I figured I’d share them here.
Constellations: Left thumb: Orion (the hunter) Left pinky: Corvus (the crow) Right thumb: Aries (the ram) Right pinky: Delphinus (the dolphin) The other six nails are inspired by photos of galaxies and supernovas.
@RiotDemon Its look gorgeous !
I also inspired by the galaxy nails from
when i first heard about galaxy nails, i watched a pics on newaylook and tutorials Nails by Kizzy on youtube and tried it out. I didn’t have patience and went about it quickly and it was a mess. I decided to try it out again after seeing the gal heres photos of nebula nails and seeings others doing it.
What polishes do you use?
@stream26 my favorite brand is probably China Glaze. I can’t remember the exact polishes I used for this. I have over 300 different polishes. Whenever I’m doing galaxy nails I just pick polishes that are shimmery for the nebulae, (I have several Zoya brand that fit the bill for that) a solid black base (probably CG liquid leather) and a scattered holographic top coat (something like CG fairy dust) to give sparkle and look like tiny stars. Standard acrylic paint for the bigger stars/constellations. I rip up a makeup wedge into tiny little pieces to dab on the polish, holding it with tweezers.
@CaptAmehrican I have recently seen people use the vinyl @lisaviolet uses and her machine to make stencils or just nail covers…like jamberries, are they called?
Cool stamps, did you dip the stamp in nail polish?
@mikibell no nail stamps are metal etched plates that you put the polish on and scrape excess off then use a squishy silicone stamper to pick up and transfer to the already base colored nail. So nude pinkish base polish with the shiny brown on the stamp.
The silver thing you can see is the stamping plate. The clear round thing is the stamper. The clear rectangular thing is the scraper and the two polishes I used are in the picture too.
@CaptAmehrican that’s really good for a first time. I heard those winstonia plates are pretty good. My first plates were the original bundle monster set. They are ok, but much more finicky than newer plates. The clear stampers didn’t exist then either. I’m really glad improvements have come about.
@CaptAmehrican yeah, gotta be careful with stamps. Wait a while, and then use a super light touch where the bristles don’t even touch your nails, only the polish.
I would love to but I work my hands too hard. I gave myself a basic manicure on Sunday, primer, two coats of polish and a topcoat. This morning I wore right through to the nail on three fingers with the metal grinder, and two other nail polishes appear permanently stained with buffer polish. The main reason I wear nail polish is so there’s something between me and the tools.
@RiotDemon It gives beautiful results, but I’ve read that the UV is bad for your nails, and mine already tend to be brittle and split a lot. I can’t imagine the gel would stand up much better to a metal grinder, though.
@moondrake the only thing that’s bad for your nails is when they buff the crap out of your actual nail or try to remove the gel with scraping tools. The thing that keeps me from doing gel is that you have to soak them off, and that takes a while.
If you’re hitting your nail with the grinder disc, then I doubt it, lol
What’s the difference between shellac and gel? Which is tougher? I’m looking at manipedis on Groupon for my upcoming vacation, I want something that will stay looking good for a couple of weeks under moderate use. I’ll wait till my art classes conclude to get them done and quit with home improvements so there won’t be so much damage. Both are available on Groupon.
@f00l I’ll sell you a “quit with home improvements” cheap. You want someone else to do them, that’ll cost you.
My hands are just healing up from the dozen splinters I got off my old wooden ladder installing solar and electric light strings in my new carport and a couple of solar security lights on the back of my house and on the carport of the empty neighboring house. Their driveway abuts my windows and the house has been empty a couple of years, so I called the for sale by owner number and asked them if they minded me putting a security light on their carport for both our sakes. They were all for it. I still have a million things to do around here, an old house will always keep you busy, and my warring natures of pack rat and OCD keep me busy. I have a long term garage/carriage house reorganization project I’m waiting for warm weather to get back to.
So I haven’t done nails since I was a kid or when my kid wanted to do them (she finally got to be really good with a brush - I think she could make a living doing that if wanted to and got whatever that certificate is they need)…
Anyway, mine got so wrecked during chemo and I have 3 that have are splitting along ridges (the ridges appeared during chemo, never had them before that, splits started then too and I was so hoping this would all go away after I finally recovered from the chemo - nearly killed my bone marrow and damaged my liver but luckily 3.5 years later all that has more or less recovered, just not my nails; also that white half moon area totally vanished during that and has only sort of come back on a few fingers). I am afraid to put anything on them because I had read that nail polish isn’t all that good for your nails and nail remover is even worse and I have enough problems as it is. But then what do I know… never really paid much attention to them until these problems.
Question for all you nail knowledge people - how do you stop the splitting? It splits well into the quick, then that hurts, catches… I have tried filing it down, super glue, nail glue, a drop of clear nail polish just where it is splitting… nothing seems to stop the carnage. Oh, almost forgot on the internet they said glue part of a tea bag over the split. That didn’t work and that came off about 4 days later anyway. Any suggestions?
@Kidsandliz The index fingernail on my left hand was crushed when I was a kid and developed a line straight down the middle that splits at the slightest provocation. Decades later it remains unchanged. The only thing I’ve been able to do is keep a couple of coats of polish on it for strength, to be careful with it till it gets a little end on it and then to be diligent about filing the edge when any sort of splitting appears and to file back to the sound part of the nail. Not to let it get very long. Try and favor it when doing hard work. It’s filed right back to the quick right now as I banged it on something recently and split it badly. Trying to nurture it back to having a safety margin. My nails are all short right now as I’m in a ceramics/pottery class.
Not sure if they all use the exact brand. It’s probably just acrylic nail powder and nail glue, but it works for people that have almost completely ripped their nails off.
You could try a UV cure gel polish. That leaves a thicker layer that you have to soak off, which takes a while.
Also, they have special vitamins for hair and nails that might help. Just check the ingredients because I’ve heard some people can be sensitive to some of the stuff in them.
How about a LED cured gel polish. They are much thicker than regular polish and last a much longer time. Also Sally Hansen has a nail repair thing you put this glue liquid on your nail and then you put it in a powder and somehow that cures and it creates a really hard Bond. Also I have heard that biotin helps to grow nails but I’m not sure about that.
@f00l The dermatologist I saw for something else apparently doesn’t “do” problems with nails (I think he has done way too much acne and botox to remember much else from med school LOL). Biotin apparently can help if you are deficient but it takes months as nails grow slowly.
@moondrake Sounds like many solutions are temporary if there is an underlying issue. I am likely in the same boat you are but for different reasons. And yes I was very thankful my bone marrow recovered from chemo (chemo very nearly killed it) and I didn’t head down the path of needing a bone marrow transplant.
My mom used to have very long nails, and one of her thumbs had a crack in it. She purchased a paper similar to this tutorial (they use tea bag paper). I have no idea where my mom found it, but it helped reinforce the nail after she coated it with clear nail polish and the paper was nearly invisible. I cannot personally speak to how helpful it is, because eh, my nails are a mess on most days!!!
I’m currently not sporting any cool designs, but plan on getting something like this before the opening of Homecoming. My nails are coffin tips so a lot of cool designs just don’t look the same
@RiotDemon I just got it done today. It’s a gel because at work I’m really tough on my nails so pretty much worth it. Otherwise polish doesn’t last two days!
@CaptAmehrican If you are the one that created those and they are stick on you ought to sell them at the Schooner race in Oct (and get someone to sell them for you at which ever end you can’t be at - presuming you have to work and can’t be on a boat in the race). And in NYC if you get to go there in July.
@Kidsandliz not stick on. I did nail stamps over a two tone blue french manicure. Schooner bums I am glad if they shower, nails really don’t get done.(plus these are only 1 mast)
I did also on the same nautical stamping plate it has another stamp that looks a bit like the barque eagle.
@CaptAmehrican I was thinking more respect to the spectators who buy all that other crap they sell (this I learned the one time I watched the 4th of July fireworks from Battery Park when I was sent to accompany some of the passengers who wanted to watch there (stupid - much better view from the boat)… unless the pay has gone way up since I last did it most on Schooners, Brigantines, etc. crew don’t make enough to buy anything if they do like many and drink it all away on their rare evenings off.
@RiotDemon Odd. I just replied to you with the giphy command and got nothing. What got posted was just the command I had typed. Perhaps @eluno put a curse on you?
When I posted not replying to you it worked fine (see several posts below)
@f00l
perhaps the error comes up when someone is replying to a master comment created by someone else? since i seem to be able to reply to anyone, under the master comment i created?
@f00l I have a problem when replying to @riotdemon … Hey @shawn there is some odd problem happening as @riotdemon seems to be cursed by the goat @eluno and can’t do giphy at all and gets error 500. I can’t reply to him, but it works for me otherwise and @f00l has no problem (well @f00l has problems but not this kind LOL)
@RiotDemon ugh. Ok I can reply to myself here, but wasn’t able a minute ago… And I wasn’t able to reply in Yoda’s post above with the photo of four feet.
My current (3-days-old) manicure. I think it looks like chocolate frosting with sprinkles. I used Sally Hansen Miracle Gel “Spice Age” as the base color and topped it off with China Glaze “Point Me to the Party”.
@CaptAmehrican@riotdemon so I made a BIG mistake and tried to compromise with my daughter and said she could get fake tips. I didn’t know what that meant… That when one breaks it might take half her nail with it…sigh. I am hoping the nail people say no she doesn’t have enough nail to do tips. But she is going on a high adventure trip next week, climbing tower, zipline, white water rafting, in the middle of nowhere. What do I need to buy for emergency nail repairs? Please help me!!
@mikibell I’m guessing fake tips are acrylic or gel nails. I’ve never heard of them called that. When you get acrylics or gels when your nails are short, they glue a plastic nail tip and then put the materials on top of it. They are pretty durable. If her nails are super short, make sure they make the new nails really short as well. I’d do fingertip length at most. They’ll look nice but won’t get caught on everything.
The other thing they could be is glue on nails.
Nail glue would be the only help besides going to a salon.
Was it you or somebody else who said that having a Pac-Man theme took a while to do?
@PlacidPenguin this is my first try so not me.
@PlacidPenguin it was me. I had done it on my hands and feet.
Awesome…
Here’s my version of PacMan done a while ago.
@PlacidPenguin
I also did it in my toes, which I don’t recommend. Not like anyone could tell what it was unless my feet were in their face.
@RiotDemon
So… You spent time doing something which people wouldn’t recognize (whether you intended for that or not).
I would imagine that doing it for your toes was a bit harder than the hands.
@RiotDemon nice ghosts

@RiotDemon You are not seeing the smudged pinkie on my right hand .
@CaptAmehrican as with all art, if you can’t see it from 3-6 feet away, it didn’t happen!
Well smudged stamp with top coat last night but here is try 2 stamped. The wood grain lasted5 days.

Used a straw dipped in black to blow splatters on my nails. The polish is a multichrome. I love the color shifting stuff.

PS, so happy for your recovery!
@Kidsandliz
Have you talked to either a dermatologist or a manicurist (two ends of a spectrum) about this?
What about vitamins/diet? I dunno if any of that works or not.
There may even be specialist manicurists. Dunno.
@Kidsandliz nail polish remover is terrible for you, if you drink it. Putting it on your nails doesn’t hurt anything. It just makes my skin dry.
The tea bag method only lasts a few days for me as well. A lot of nail bloggers swear by this powder now:
https://www.amazon.com/Orly-OR23800-Nail-Rescue-Kit/dp/B002KYF068
Not sure if they all use the exact brand. It’s probably just acrylic nail powder and nail glue, but it works for people that have almost completely ripped their nails off.

@Yoda_Daenerys are those yours and your partner’s?
@RiotDemon i probably shouldn’t say, because modest
@RiotDemon we use the term spouse in our house, because old
any guesses as to the gender of those toes, from left to right?
@Yoda_Daenerys I didn’t know if you were married or you just say that sometimes to trip us up.
I’d assume female, then male.

Nail [clipping] art.
@elimanningface yuck.
@CaptAmehrican Premiere nails!
Beautiful sculptures made entirely of store-bought nails
@therealjrn That is what I call Nail Art!
@CaptAmehrican @riotdemon so I made a BIG mistake and tried to compromise with my daughter and said she could get fake tips. I didn’t know what that meant… That when one breaks it might take half her nail with it…sigh. I am hoping the nail people say no she doesn’t have enough nail to do tips. Don’t get me wrong, I think fake nails are beautiful, but I expect the kid will hate them after a week! And she is already high maintenance
@RiotDemon yes…we agreed on reasonable length tips… bet our definitions differ vastly!! She is away with grandma…so we shall see …
Thank you!
