My impulse buys finally came in handy!
25So I’d picked up a few portable battery powered lighting things over the years at Meh- A long flashlight, a couple little lanterns, and a hanging light. Used very rarely, until tonight when my building had a 5 1/2 hour power outage while doing repairs on an electric substation.
I first lit a candle. Looked at it. Went, “Not unless I want 200 of those lit”. Proceeded to make my place happy with the long flashlight as the brightest one holding down the living room, staring at the ceiling like a mini torch lamp. The lanterns made the kitchen and bathroom pleasant, with the hanging lamp being the “I need to go to one of the other areas” quick grab.
Bonus fistbump to the inexhaustible pack of AA batteries.

Isn’t it wonderful when the stars align and you have what you need, when you need it, and you know where it is?
My personal favorite example is almost exactly fifteen years ago I was working with a guy who conversationally asked, “What’s tamarind, anyway?” And I responded “I HAVE SOME IN THE TRUNK OF MY CAR. I’LL GET IT.” And he was like, “No, you don’t have to.” And I said “NO, I’M GETTING IT.” Because when will it be a better time to have a bag of tamarind in the trunk of one’s car for no known reason?
@mossygreen This makes very good sense, and justifies my thrifting habit.
@mossygreen Yep, those were the glory days, amiright? Great story to tell the grandkids.

So…uh…what is tamarind?

(Interesting, but REALLY REALLY long.)
@macromeh @mossygreen @OldCatLady @therealjrn But why would one keep it in the trunk? Is it to keep the other little bags of “oregano” company?
No officer, I swear it’s just some tamarind and oregano back there! I’m planning to cook some Thai for my friends this weekend and wanted to keep it a surprise.

@kuoh @macromeh @OldCatLady @therealjrn I don’t want to ruin the mystery for anyone, but if I recall correctly it was a mis-shipped grocery item from a store where I used to work, and would have been in my trunk for a minimum of six months at that point. I also had an emergency witch’s hat in my backseat for several years (which I was actually able to use one year in an actual witch-hat-related emergency).
The real answer is, of course, JUST IN CASE.
@kuoh @macromeh @mossygreen @OldCatLady @therealjrn Mossygreen - on the Click and Clack brothers a woman once said that her car (a VW bug) was an extension of her purse. Perhaps that is why you kept it there? Personally my car is an extension the my basement I don’t have.
@Kidsandliz @kuoh @macromeh @OldCatLady @therealjrn Purse AND basement! And then everywhere else.
@macromeh @mossygreen @OldCatLady @therealjrn A fruit that can sit in a car trunk for over 6 months and not turn into a mold colony, I’m not sure whether to be impressed or scared by it.

Being as it is the Halloween season the CDC did a fun zombie apocalypse prep thing which also doubled as their “you should have this 3-day supply of stuff around just in case.”
So even a half assed collection of “maybe just in case” stuff is still probably good to have around.

@Targaryen ZOMBIES? We have to worry about ZOMBIES now?
@Targaryen @therealjrn Actually, not any more now than before…
@phendrick @Targaryen Yeah, I remember when they did the Zombie warning.
A little too cutsie for me, but I guess they wanted to be hep cats for the swingers.
