@Barney Tuesday…tomorrow is prep…don’t expect him to be far from the bathroom after noonish poor guy can only have liquids…and I so plan on payback…when I was in the hospital each time to give birth to one of HIS children, the evil bastard ate VERY pungent sandwiches in my room when all I could eat was ice chips! I am thinking spicy mexican dip for lunch…perhaps fench toast for breakfast… Bacon cheeseburger for dinner …yes, I hold a grudge!

My current marriage is also ending. There’s zero changing that, it’s done. I am going back to work after ten years, and fairly terrified, not knowing how I’ll take care of the boys and myself. We can’t even afford to file right now, so we will be forced to live together until I’ve made enough to get separate places. So much fun in our little house. The couch gets old fast. Our oldest (the one with the jackass dad) knows. Our little one does not.

@dashcloud what grass? between the weeds and the dog, my back yard is in shambles. i called someone to take a look. they basically told me it could be repaired, but i’d have to keep the dog out of the yard for 6-8 months. and even after that, he’d probably just tear it up again. i’m moving to arizona where people just have rocks and cacti in the yard and it looks nice.

@carl669 Our front and back yard actually look pretty good now, but 5yr ago the foster dog we were looking after gave birth to 9 puppies. Completely ruined the back yard - soon there was nothing left but dirt and the big (12in) maple. Once we found a home for all the dogs (took all summer), we had to put new sod down. Thought about fake turf but WAY too expensive

@RedOak I went through that a few times with an old a.c., until they started replacing the motor. That thing was so underpowered so it ran almost constantly. (Florida gets hot!) Eventually demanded that the landlord replace the a.c. or I wasn’t going to stay another year because I was so tired of the Damn thing breaking down. He did. Power bill went down a ton! That was years ago and my a.c. had worked like a charm since… Until now.

@mfladd thanks. Had a few people offering a place to stay, but I would of felt awful leaving the animals while I find a.c. At least if I stay in the hot house, I can take a shower if I get too hot. The a.c. is taking the edge off at least. Not quite powerful enough seeing as there is no door to block the air from escaping into my kitchen, but it works decently enough in the bedroom at night, thank god.

@RiotDemon temporary stop-gap for a doorless opening: pin or tack a bed sheet over the opening by tacking at into the top of the doorway trim (holes not visible). No insulating value but blocks some air movement.

@RiotDemon a hassle of home ownership - nobody else to fund that AC replacement! We would love the huge efficiency improvement from our current 9 SEER to 14/15+. But living in the Great Lake state, the low number of AC days/year means the payback term is painful. Especially when the current unit still works.

Of course in your case once a landlord installs new central air their tendency will be to raise rent, especially when the operating savings don’t go to them!

@RedOak I got lucky, he didn’t. I think since I’ve stayed here so long and don’t bother him for stupid things (I just give him my receipts for stuff I’ve fixed) that he doesn’t date raise my rent now. Plus, I found the tax record of how much he paid for my house, which was a really decent price, so he’s raking in dough every month I stay.

Good idea about the sheet to cover open doorways, unfortunately it’s not a doorway. It goes through a dining “room” into the kitchen. So it’s a 8’ gap with no trim to push pins into. You did give me the idea to use a laundry hanger thing I have sitting in my garage to hang a sheet on to maybe redirect some of the air.

Hopefully it’ll get fixed today and I won’t have to rig anything.

@RiotDemon how about a curtain rod with command hooks on the ceiling? No damage and might work? We do the curtain/sheet hanging thing in our living room…it opens to the dining room, family room and stairwell without doors to close…lots of other doorways too…grr…if you lived closer, we have extra air conditioners…hubby collects them when customers upgrade to more efficient models. He keeps them for “that day when…” mostly they end up @ relatives, because, knock on wood, ours work until we can no longer make them work (so we have to push the on button six or seven times to turn it on!!)

@mikibell Thanks for the thoughts. The guy is here changing the outside unit right now. Since it hasn’t rained he could see all the oil leaking onto the unit, so it definitely needed replacing. In a few hours I should have sweet relief!

@sarahsandroid i had migranes that “aren’t” and it turned out i have an intolerance to caffeine (headache starts any time i go more than 24 hrs wo caffeine and doesnt let up for 3 days regardless of what i’ve tried). Suggest you try a food/life journal to see if there is a trigger (including, like in my case, absence of something). Been 3 yrs wo chocolate or coffee, which SUCKS, but not as much as the headaches did.

Finally get to go home at 1:45am. Crushed end of my finger, cut to the bone and a small bit into it, nail will fall off, still bleeding a bit 4.5 hours after doing this. They decided to wrap it and splint it and gave me the choice of pulling the nail off to stitch it or leave it alone with a pressure bandage and tape stuff. Um nope do not want the nail yanked off. I believe that kind of torture is against the Geneva convention. Heck I could have done what they did myself without a visit to the ER (well excepting the tetanus shot). Guess I got lucky it wasn’t worse. Oh wait this is supposed to be a fucking shit thread. Of course typing is awkward with a bandage that is way bigger then two fingers. And I work online so I get to type a lot.

@mikibell Nail is cut in half crosswise all the way through as is the tissue under it. My thought on leaving it was that it would protect what was under there for a while. I can always run tape/steristrip across it once it is nearer to falling off to keep it from wiggling. Just sounded too painful to rip off 1/2 my nail and leave the top of my finger all exposed. Who knows may regret it. Gives new meaning to breaking a nail LOL

The living have to try to understand, and plan for, the next attack. Every minute we spend in fear and panic is a victory for the terrorist. There will certainly be some vicious little horror who will be thrilled by this and decide they want to do it themselves, and if your training helps you or anyone during an attack, that’s what it was for.

A lot of us go to Orlando for vacations. The chances of this happening to us is very slim, but it still worries me when they talk about hit lists of normal citizens in the area. A breeze outside had pushed a lot of smoke in through the windows before I realized how much smoke was getting in, and got things closed up.

@mfladd just checked and it’s covered under comprehensive. i’m pretty sure the crack is too big to repair though (which would be free to me). so most likely will need to have the windshield replaced and be on the hook for the deductible ($100).

@carl669 Well, fuckity fuckity fuck. Same thing happened to me in week two of my BRAND NEW car. I could see the chunk of concrete slooowwwllly sailing into my windshield, and had time to say ‘FUCK’. FL has free windshield replacement in all policies, though.

@FruityFraug Only when I’m behind inadequately covered dump trucks going up a steep bridge at high speed. Other cars caught their share and at least one pursued the truck to try to get him pulled over. Didn’t work, did get him reported.

@Barney yeah. most likely i’m going to pull out the flame thrower to take out some frustration. but, you’re still coming to breakfast, right?

@OldCatLady my main thing is reading horror stories about leaks after getting a windshield replaced. apparently, after breaking the factory seal, they’re more prone to leaks.

@carl669 I lived in Colorado and I swear the sand they put down for the snow had little homing rocks in it that went straight for my windows. I had a lot of windshields replaced. Never had one leak, so I don’t think you are going to have to worry about that.

@carl669 Never had one leak after replacement; it’s much lower probability than the original windshield damage/crack (which is fairly low to begin with).

@compunaut good to know. after reading some more, it seemed to happen more on older cars where there was rust that prevented a good seal.

@carl669 This is the second windshield I’ve had replaced; once with a 5 year old car I kept for another 5 years. No leaks at all.
