Midland XTC 280VP Recall
8Today, I went on the Midland web site (to download the user manual) and found this notice:
XTC280 Notice
Apr 10, 2015 | James Riddle | Midland
It has been determined that, under certain conditions, Midland Action Cameras with FCC ID: MMAXTC280 could interfere with the operation of other electronic devices and are, therefore, no longer being offered for sale. Any consumers who purchased these cameras may request an exchange by contacting Midland at 1-800-821-7848, and consumers are also asked to report any interference problems to Midland.

So, I called them up--and waited for 30 minutes. Turns out the FCC # is in the battery compartment. If you have an "a" at the end of the TC280, it is not part of the recall. Mine had an "a". You may want to check. If it doesn't, they may need to replace it.

Thanks for the heads up!
I always wondered about that FCC notice- which with this recall is even more strange, as it says devices can't cause interference, but have to accept it from other devices.
@dashcloud FCC specs are fairly wimpy. They allow "a lot" of energy to be broadcast. They also say, don't be a wuss - we allow a lot out, so you better be able to take it. Don't come crying to us if your piece of crap can't take it. What else do you want to know? Someone probably complained about the Midlands spraying too much energy. Midland did a recall, because they were spraying too much energy (they got caught).
@G1 Thanks- that was interesting to know.
No offense, but why do you think Midland had all these "refurbs"?
@givemeyoursoul None taken. Yes. I figured that out when I went to the web site. That being said, it doesn't tell you about the "A" and I figured I'd let everyone know before they spent 30 minutes on the phone waiting when they saw it.
@givemeyoursoul it's nice to know that the reason they had all these returns is because they were recalled and reworked and (maybe) not that they were pieces of junk.
@Stumpy91 This also lets us know that @snapster may get his hands on a few thousand more. Looking forward to it!
@Stumpy91 Well, I wouldn't say they aren't pieces of junk...... I don't know yet, mine is still in it's box.
@djslack I sure hope we get some more. I missed out on this deal. Thanks for the post @densa.
@shawn I got in for a 720p, but missed t on this model because I finished doing the dishes before going to buy. So I hope more come too.
Thanks for the heads up. You probably saved me 30 minutes+.
Wow. So perhaps this explains the guy with the pacemaker that keeled over in front of me when I was trying out the cam at the ball game this evening. Oops.
I didn't buy one, but that would have been a mighty helpful post if I had. And more than simply saying it was recalled, you went a step further with the specifics. Thanks!
Now if we just could have convinced the FCC to enforce interference issues with CFL light bulbs. Still have a couple of those that wreak havoc on radio signals.
You would think the 720p version would be subject to the same recall but it must be somewhat different circuitry or shielding. Still had a lot of refurbs available.
@Stumpy91 The XTC-280VP (The subject of this post) IS the 720p version
@sparkyfarad No. The 720p- Model: XTC260VP, 1080p- Model: XTC280VP. https://meh.com/forum/topics/midland-wearable-action-camera-refurbished
Go to bed.
@Stumpy91 You're right ,,my mistake. sorry, I need stronger reading glasses. I read the 6 as an 8 on my box label...all week
Does this include the butter pecan cameras?
Hey y'all, we reached out to Midland directly to get clarification on this and received the following message:
"There is no recall or safety issue on this, or any other Midland Action Camera. A recent laboratory test indicated that, when downloading video from the camera to another device, there could on occasion be a very small amount of interference that might affect reception in another nearby device. Because this condition falls outside the required spec, the FCC required Midland to post the notice on our website to inform consumers, and Midland voluntarily offered to replace any affected camera. We are also asking that any reports of interference from this camera be reported to us."
Midland has indicated that all units affected by this are identifiable by the FCC identifier in the battery compartment and they are confident that none of these units were in the batch sold on Meh.
