Do some online learning, there are tons of youtube videos. Also some sites (sorry I don’t have a specific recommendation) where detectorists hang out where you might get more knowledgeable recommendations, though there do seem to be a lot of ‘my brand is better’ feuds.
I tried to ramp up on this a few years ago then found out that my wretched state of domicile (illannoy) doesn’t allow detecting except in very specific and restricted areas, and after a few months of trying couldn’t make a connection for private property access. So also check your local and state laws, and any regulations about your beach.
I have two!
However, one was a yard sale $20 one (Coinmaster 6/DF) that I just finished rebuilding the wiring & rheostat switches. Someone let the batteries leak. I found the paperwork online for it. The weather is too crappy to try it yet.
The other one is a Goodwill one I got for $15 that is a much cheaper one (Bounty Hunter)… but works.
Here’s what I’d like to find:
Don’t buy too cheap. Don’t buy a Barska
