I have 25 episodes of Homeland to watch (to get caught up). Having over 4TB of disk space allocated to my DVR does facilitate my procrastination habits.
@compunaut lol… I have a Heineken mini-keg in my kitchen and a beertender sitting here (never used it… got it from a friend). Perhaps I’ll spin that up soon. (Want to see about making the mini-keg refillable.)
@compunaut guess i wasn’t ready to confess it. actually, it’s one of those shows that i love to watch, but only watch when i’m flipping through the guide and see it. i don’t make it a point to watch it, but eventually i’ll end up seeing all the episodes.
@carl669 OH GAWD. That was not nice. I might almost have to drive to Wallyworld (open 24hr) to buy some. WAIT–might have some frozen berries–those might do it…
@compunaut i pretty much always have frozen or fresh blueberries in the house since my kid loves them. and, for whatever reason, the strawberries are going insane in the garden, so i’m getting 12-15 good size berries daily. as for the whip cream, i usually make my own, so i always have some nitro chargers on hand.
OK, since all of you are going to take naps, I might as well sign up for one too.
@baqui63 HEREBY REGISTERS FOR HIS NAP STARTING AT 4:01AM (right after he posts in that time slot) AND ENDING BY 10:00AM (meaning he must post by 10:30 AM, to fill the 10-10:30 slot, right?)
anyone know how long spam is good past the expire date? i was going through my bug out bag and there were 2 cans in there about a year past the exp date. seal is still good and neither can is puffed out or anything.
@jbartus Probably still fine. Canned goods last a long time (but not indefinitely). Maybe eat up the 2 cans and buy replacements?
/giphy bug out bag with SPAM
@carl669 most canned goods without damage are good for 5-7 years or even longer (in my experience). As long as the lining of the can is intact, you’re ok.
Funny you mention spam. My gf’s BIL has a can of spam from the 80’s that has traveled all over the world. (Think like the garden gnome.) It started as a joke between army buddies and now has been going on for decades. There are pix of “spammy” at the taj mahal, all 50 states and I believe most US teritorries, most of the carribean, china, japan, korea (not sure about north), etc.
@compunaut definitely the one person bug out. i figure, if i keep a ton of survival gear and the house collapses on top of it, i may not be able to get to it when needed. with the bag, i just grab the gun and the bag and get the fuck out. i suppose i’ll bring the boy as well.
back after the y2k bullshit, I had a friend who saw my place for the first time in several years ask me if I was preparing for y3k.
I have enough food in my home to last (without power) for about six weeks… would be low in terms of calories, but enough to live on. If power stays on (meaning I don’t loose the freezer) it is closer to three months.
@carl669 it should be fine, the dates on canned goods are really more designed to keep stock turning over and canned goods selling than representative of anything inherently wrong with the contents. Literally they put the dates on there expecting people to see it and discard it once it gets past the arbitrary date on the can. Perishables are a whole other matter of course but canned goods are a non-issue.
In the most technical of senses that date on the can is the sell by date or the best by date. Bear in mind that canned food is not impervious to the ravages of time, simply impervious to bacteria and the like. The foods will eventually begin to break down (long long term) but they will retain all nutritional value and remain safe to eat.
There was actually a river boat that sunk in the 1860s that some canned food was recovered from and chemists analyzed the contents and found that they were safe to eat. Canning technology is far better now than it was then so…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TL;DR > Canned food is safe to eat for at least 100 years, it might lose some of its texture and begin to break down in other ways but most nutritional value is retained and nothing gets into the can to infect it. This has been proven with 1860s canned foods.
@jbartus yeah. expiration dates are mostly marketing bullshit. eg. yogurt is good for weeks after the sell by date and I regularly use eggs that are three months past their expiry date.
Properly wrapped food will keep for years in a non-autodefrost freezer…
When DU2 was about 9 or 10, we baked a cake from a mix (betty crocker or duncan hines?) that was older than she was. Was quite tasty and actually very good, since it didn’t rise as much as normal it was very dense and had a nice texture.
@jbartus The condition of the can has to remain fairly good tho. A dent or scratch on the surface will lead to much accelerated breakdown of its integrity as well as contents. Dry & undamaged will (as you say) last a REALLY long time
Besides meh, anyone else have a nightly website visiting ritual? I play the daily numbrix puzzle for a little mind challenge while I’m eating. http://parade.com/tag/numbrix/
Meh is pretty automatic for me, though there are nights when I’m sound asleep before 10pm when woot turns over. Occasionally, I don’t even make it past 9pm.
@baqui63 that video exhibits a painful lack of consistency with regards to spacecraft he flies in. They show a shuttle lift off, then a Saturn V (Apollo), then he’s in the Apollo Lunar Module. Make up our minds!
It’s officially 3:00 AM here in EDT so it is time for me to go to sleep. See you all in a while!
@narfcake, I check QC (questionable content) and xkcd (those are not new every night, but I frequently forget what day it is, so I tend to check every night as I go to bed anyway). Also, Randall’s whatif blog is checked most nights.
I also check woot daily, usually after it rolls over at 1AM (1AM is about the earliest I normally go to bed, unless I’m sick or have to be up before 6AM).
I also hit bing rewards (30 searches a day works out to about $70/year off amazon shit, plus bing is fine for current events and bullshit about celebrities and the like).
I used to do all the daily sudoku puzzles on the Enjoy Sudoku app (well, Moderate and up) but stopped doing that a while back, mostly becuase I started reading a bit more and if I don’t average at least 2-3 hours of sleep a night I start to have trouble working.
@baqui63 I used to get by easily on no more than 5hrs of sleep, but in the last couple of years (I’m early 50s) find I don’t function well without 7 or more
@narfcake I normally drink about 28 oz of coffee a day, except when I cut it out completely for a few days every 3-4 weeks.
I’ve never been one to have any semblance of regular sleep, always sacrificing sleep to keep reading or watching tv or working on a project or whatever, preferring little “cat naps” to a full night’s sleep.
As I aged, I put on more and more weight and developed OSA which went untreated for close to a decade. With the OSA, anything longer than about 2-3 hours was a waste of time and actually resulted in my being more tired than just getting up after 2-3 hours. This was because once I got to the point of a deep sleep, the OSA would kick in and I’d start cycles of “stop breathing, jerk awake, start breathing, fall asleep,” with 80-120 cycles an hour. Needless to say, this does not yield rest so this merely reinforced my prior tendency to sleep little.On several occasions, I’ve gone more than 72 hours without any real sleep at all and not had too much trouble functioning adequately, tho no where near what I can do mentally.
My food is gone, the beer too. Now I’m getting sleepy, and there’s nothing much happening on the forum. Probably just take my lumps and go to bed now - I got things to do tomorrow!
That’s all folks! It was fun while it lasted, but there’s an arm-long list of honeydews waiting for me, plus I want to do some root beer shopping. Adios, amigos

Yay! My sealer has left Texas and is on its way to NJ. (Well, it is probably still actually in Texas, and it may stop in Tennessee before it gets to NJ.) Delivery is 6/11 so that means 6/13 or 6/14.
Now, what were we supposed to use on the outside of the innermost bag? Was it coffee? or hot sauce? or tumeric?
score sheet
just thought i’d post it here as well. (yes, i know this post doesn’t count)
@carl669 ooooh! someone (even more anal/ocd than I) prettied up that sheet.
We should write some code to populate it automagically. Shouldn’t be all that hard to scrape. @lichme! you around??!
@baqui63 I am, but about to retire for the night, sorry
@lichme is ok, lichme… thanks anyways.
You posted this 25 minutes too early! For shame, DMivezey, for shame! Sleep well, enjoy your nap!
ok… I’ve posted here now.
I have 25 episodes of Homeland to watch (to get caught up). Having over 4TB of disk space allocated to my DVR does facilitate my procrastination habits.
who says one can’t prepare in advance?
i’m off to nappyville, but my favorite artist just queued up in Google Music, so…
so, have fun, and if you change the rules while i sleep and i don’t like it, well i’ll just change them back when i’m up before everyone else
/giphy restless sleep
Okay guys, let’s reduce @DMivezey’s nap chit length to 3 hours and then pass legislation forbidding further modification of any and all nap chits.
@jbartus rofl
@DMlivezey
Shall we have a gentlemen’s agreement that no dirty pool be played? Nap chits are immutable?
@jbartus oh yea, i forgot to say, one, two, three - no
/giphy changes one bowie
@DMlivezey huh?
@jbartus huh what? you didn’t do the one-two-three-no changes when you were a kid?
ttyl, out
Sandwich is gone and still a bit hungry; have to find something else. Besides the beer isn’t gone yet
/giphy beer isn’t gone yet
@compunaut pork rinds and french onion dip usually does the trick for me.
@compunaut how much ∆v does a keg of beer provide on the moon?
@compunaut lol… I have a Heineken mini-keg in my kitchen and a beertender sitting here (never used it… got it from a friend). Perhaps I’ll spin that up soon. (Want to see about making the mini-keg refillable.)
@carl669 eww
@jbartus is that the moon tho?
@compunaut oh man. pork rinds are awesome. whenever we buy pork belly, i save the skin and make my own cracklins.
@baqui63 Looks like the Int’l Space Station to me
/giphy space station
@carl669 I found what I need: Chicago Deep Dish flavored kettle chips (> cracklins). Where did you learn to eat that shit?
@compunaut @baqui63 it sure looks like he’s on the moon trying to fly to the ISS and gets waylaid by a whale. Why is a whale in space? No clue.
@jbartus Wasn’t there a whale in space in one of the Star Trek movies?
/giphy whale in space
@jbartus You need to read more douglas adams. that will make everything clear to you.
@jbartus this music video 'splains it:
It is either way cool or scary what you can do with a few mouse clicks these days…
My belly is grumbling. I think that’s a sign.
I may as well REGISTER FOR NAP CHIT BETWEEN 0430-0930 … which would mean 1:30am to 6:30am on the best coast.
@narfcake so you’re doing this now (at 2:10 meh time) for 4:30 meh time. is that much lead time required?
@baqui63 a minimum of 90 minutes…
@jbartus hmmm
so now would mean sleepytime about 4AM… eh…
so, i’m watching Alaskan Bush People and their RV just caught fire. this is my guilty pleasure show.
What network is that on?
/giphy massive fire
@carl669 ROFL. I don’t remember you mentioning that in the related Meh thread
@compunaut me either.
I also cannot remember if I owned up to mine being Good Witch or not.
@jbartus discovery
@compunaut guess i wasn’t ready to confess it. actually, it’s one of those shows that i love to watch, but only watch when i’m flipping through the guide and see it. i don’t make it a point to watch it, but eventually i’ll end up seeing all the episodes.
@carl669 Never works that way for me.
When I’m justflipping thru, and see a show that I’ve only seen 1-3 episodes of, the episode on at the time is ALWAYS one of those three.
What to eat when you’re half an hour from going to bed?
@jbartus blueberries/strawberries with some whipped cream?
@carl669 OH GAWD. That was not nice. I might almost have to drive to Wallyworld (open 24hr) to buy some. WAIT–might have some frozen berries–those might do it…
@jbartus pizza? jamaican beef patties? ice cream? cheese sandwich?
@compunaut i pretty much always have frozen or fresh blueberries in the house since my kid loves them. and, for whatever reason, the strawberries are going insane in the garden, so i’m getting 12-15 good size berries daily. as for the whip cream, i usually make my own, so i always have some nitro chargers on hand.

@baqui63 rules state you must post at the beginning and end of your nap chit. so, you’d have to post at 4:01 and then at 10am. no wiggle room.
@carl669 Ok, I’m fine with that.
@baqui63 I tried the same loophole.
@carl669 you got that right, brutha!

As you can read they also analyzed a 40 year old can of corn and the corn looked and smelled like recently canned corn.

now, to find that 50 year old can of spam. mmm… cream of spam soup.
@carl669 Mom used to make us grilled cheese sandwich with thinly sliced SPAM. I remember it being pretty good
@compunaut sounds horrible for you, yet delicious

@baqui63 not at all, it has @narfcake napping too effectively.
@jbartus This is accurate!
