mediocrebot takes an art class
16update: members now have access to this tool – see this topic
I posted about AI image generation yesterday. One of the companies mentioned, Stable Diffusion, has a lot of momentum building a community of engineers and fans after releasing their image generation model on an Open Source license. A few of us have leaned in to follow along and have fun with it. Our CTO @Shawn has also been watching things develop and graciously used some personal time to set up a (first of it’s kind?) web forum integration with our custom Meh forum platform. The feature can be addressed using a new Meh Slash Command. Right now the feature is only available to Staff and Moderator accounts.
Lots of mumbo-jumbo? TL;DR:
Mediocrebot can now generate images in response to text prompts.
In this thread, staff and moderators will see if this is a fun addition to the forums. Sorry not sorry.

/showme --help
I’m going to pretend that the format of the
Example
was chosen specifically to show us that the[options]
can actually go on either side of the<prompt>
.(it feels funny to put the opts anywhere but right after the command name, but most all the things I’ve written will accept them in almost any order)
/showme a gray-purple troll made out of felt, with small horns, pointy ears, no hat, a tuft of black hair growing up the top of his head, only two bottom teeth in his mouth, wearing a blue-purple shirt, dark eyes, ultra-detailed, hi-res, dramatic lighting, portrait photograph by Annie Liebowitz --seed 13
So very close. Obviously a relative of Irk.
@ExtraMedium I think we found Mediocrebot doesn’t respect Irk much
I stole most of this prompt from @dave’s early tests which had similarly inaccurate results, though some were much better than this.
/youtube one eyed one horn flying purple people eater
/showme a confused robot sitting at a school desk in the style of Banksy
/showme a football made out of felt in the style of basquiat.
Feel free to pass me some requests or even just order numbers and I can throw them at the bot*.

@ExtraMedium Hmm… how about this one?
/showme a sad grim reaper wearing a purple cloak with a scythe made from bones
@ExtraMedium it tried?
@mediocrebot That’s pretty sad, so I guess you got it at least half right?
/showme a calico cat riding a pink cloud with rainbow eyes
@RiotDemon LOVE this!
@RiotDemon I uhh… it tried?
@GetClosure the result wasn’t quite right, but still cute!
@GetClosure @RiotDemon Well, was it the calico cat or the pink cloud that was supposed to have rainbow eyes?
But if nothing else, you’ve got me wanting to ask for a girl with kaleidoscope eyes…
/showme a cute cat trying to solve a captcha

Something went terribly wrong. Please try again.
@dave emoji breaking it?
@dave
@dave @RiotDemon
My first guess is that it’s the exclamation point, but I don’t know how the bot/command is actually implemented. Easily could be the emoji.nvm, I just needed to scroll down far enough to see the very next entry…
/showme Legs are coming soon! Are you excited?

Ok, that’s not too shabby!
@ExtraMedium I love that there’s no hint of a seat or handlebars, driver unnecessary.
@dave @ExtraMedium That whole thing is a topology-gone-haywire forkup. Not to mention two clutch housings, no frame downtubes, exhaust pipes that kind of don’t, discontinuous brake discs…
@dave @ExtraMedium That looks as ridable as many of the “custom” motorcycles I’ve seen.
/showme matt rutledge sadly looking at his computer screen
@snapster Now we need a shot of you to use for comparison or we’ll never know the truth.
@ExtraMedium can’t see much resemblance but at least I’m younger here
@ExtraMedium @snapster I thought it would be awesome if somebody manually edited one or more of these to be genuine photographs of reality, just to see if anybody notices.

/showme anthropomorphic ferret, wearing t-shirt and jeans, wearing headphones, waiting at bus stop
/showme a toxic internet troll hard at work ruining other peoples’ fun
And now we know their secret to success…additional limbs.
@ExtraMedium Doesn’t look as toxic as I would expect.
@ExtraMedium @Kyeh I dunno, the hands on both of those right arms are pretty deformed. Maybe not quite strong enough to create ninja turtles, but toxic enough to really mess you up.
Okay, try this:

@tinamarie1974 I mean, it tried. XD
I dunno about the AI, but this thread says a lot about the minds of the Mercatalyst staff. I don’t know exactly what it says, and that’s probably for the best.
I like simple stuff, so I would like to see some cats drinking pumpkin spice lattes - as painted by Pablo Picasso.
@rockblossom
Yeah… I was thinking the same thing!
(But not exactly the cat thing)
/showme some cats drinking pumpkin spice lattes - as painted by Pablo Picasso
@mediocrebot Wow!
@mediocrebot I would buy that and hang it on my wall.
@mediocrebot @rockblossom
Great… Are NFTs the next wave of meh items?

@Kyeh @mediocrebot Yeah, I love this. Would print out.
@Kyeh @mediocrebot @mossygreen
Like the Dali one better
So does it give the same image every time if you repeat a command, or does it generate a new one?
@Kyeh let’s test!
/showme cats dressed up like witches stirring cauldrons by Lichtenstein
@mediocrebot @kyeh new!
@mediocrebot @RiotDemon

@heartny Alas, yes. I was moreso picturing something like this.
Let’s see if AI understands pinky as in finger or Pinky as in the gene spliced lab mouse:
Edit: see below.
/showme Pinky trying to take over the world
Apparently neither. Also I might have nightmares tonight.
@narfcake I laughed out loud, literally (and still am.)

@narfcake @SpoopySkeleton I’m so happy to EAT you!
@blaineg @narfcake please doooonnnttt
/showme tangerine trees and marmalade skies and the girl with kaleidoscope eyes
@xobzoo Very cool…
@ExtraMedium It’s not quite what I was expecting (though I’m not really sure what I was expecting…), but I think it got it right.
Now, can we get anybody with enough psychedelic experience to confirm that this matches the Beatles’ song?
@xobzoo Heh. The song was actually based on a drawing by Julian Lennon of his school friend Lucy Vodden. Really! Of course, John Lennon was known for including sly references to “forbidden stuff” in song lyrics, disguised just enough to slide by the censors.
Julian’s (watercolor? crayon?) drawing:

/showme Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk sitting at a campfire roasting marshmallows by Gerald Brom by Henri-Edmond Cross by Bob Byerley by Friedensreich by Regentag --seed 100
@snapster I guess I still don’t understand the point of steps or seed. Can you explain like I’m five?
@RiotDemon
Steps are repeated passes through the AI to optimize to the prompt. Generally speaking the more passes the higher match to the prompt, but there are strange paths taken that can end up much worse. The default 50 is pretty good. It’s easy to see how bad it is at like 25 in comparison.
Seed is the default randomized initial static the AI starts with. This static predetermined the outcome. Using one means you will know what it is so you can recreate the same output later. You can then “seed shop”
for a best outcome. (though doing so here means you won’t need to recreate it, but I could get that same output now in another thread)

I’d venture to say that their staff artists will remain employed.
/showme a goat riding a dirt bike
@blaineg
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@mediocrebot You call that a goat? It looks more like a regular human with a demon attached.
