Mediocre Map Idea
8I was just reading through the Fuku FAQ thread, and I had an idea that I thought might be interesting.. Would you guys (Mediocre) be able to make an "all time sales map" or a "last 12 months sales" or "sales this month" map? Something like the daily one, but that shows which regions are purchasing over a longer period of time? It might need more color varieties, so that it can show huge numbers of purchases versus large numbers.. But it would be cool to see!
We could also compare something like this against single day maps, like from the fuku, and see if there is any inherent geographical bias (based on network speeds and distance), or if those sales line up closely with overall purchase regions. It might be interesting to see..

In other words, make a map that has California emblazoned in bright fucking red and everywhere else is colored in varied light pale shades of pink.
@Pavlov I'm curious about how bright Texas and NY would be.. lol.. and if it broke down into counties, it might be cool to look at my local area.
@kadagan I couldn't resist. @MrsPavlov hit the floor laughing.
@Pavlov Or they could map out the percentage of population of each state who buys...
I'd enjoy a population (est)/purchase map.
I like maps.
This could be interesting to see. However, there are other factors that would contribute to the differences in the maps and could lead us to false conclusions about what the differences mean. For example, the people who make the most purchases don't necessarily overlap with the people who try to purchase a fuku or with those who consistently show up in the first few minutes of a new deal. I think using the map to draw conclusions about bias would require assuming that these groups DO overlap.
It would probably also be interesting for someone to just take all the maps and string them together as a gif. It would require a nice script or, barring that, someone with a ton of free time. Might not be informative but it would be neat to watch.
The informative thing would be if you had access to the map data from each day and could visualize it in different ways. Maybe you can select product categories (knives, speaker docks, kitchen, vacuum, helicopter, smartwatch, etc). Or purchase times. Or other variables.
Maps can be fun!
Keep in mind that Cali and the New England (and to a much lesser extent FL) area get an extra bump from anyone that orders from overseas and uses a freight forwarding service.
@MEHcus I think meh should just hire a full-time GIS Analyst to sift through these variables and produce a variety of attractive--possibly interactive--and informative maps.
I know a guy, but he's expensive.
i got tired of waiting and made my own map:

@carl669 - Hahaha. I feel I know your whole life now. meh should adopt this and add it to the home page for orientation purposes.
(But you forgot to mention you drove right past my mom's house on the PCH).
@carl669 - Oh, and a ghost?
@KDemo map updated. i'll see if anyone else wants to add some more landmarks.
i can only assume it was a ghost family. driving to CA with a friend of mine because she was moving there. really long, dark stretch of highway at around 2am. we see a woman and a little girl walking. didn't see a broken down car or anything. we pull off at the next exit (about .25 miles away) and i start walking back. i can't find them. yelled out a few times and no response. no other cars have gone by, so nobody else could have picked them up.
@carl669 - You both saw them? That's pretty cool. And spooky.
@KDemo yep. we both saw them. she stayed in the car at the exit while i walked back. when i came back and said there was no one there, we both freaked out a bit and hauled ass out of there.
@carl669 This is bloody fucking brilliant. Nice job.
@joelmw thanks!
@carl669 You brilliant fucking sonofabitch.
