Maybe It Pleases Me More Than It Should (Fuckit Friday) . . .
17In honor of my friend @bluedyn, whom I haven't seen in forever (where are you?!), and as an obvious ripoff of @Thumperchick's "Make Nice" thread, I propose a Fuckit Friday collection of weird things that make us more happy than they should. Just because. Maybe because Fuckit Friday makes me more happy than it should.

Food. Any song I can sing along to, even if it's bad (or especially if it's bad). Romantic comedies. Kitties.
I don't look this girly in real life.
@katylava My wife has taught me to sing out loud all of the time. It's awesome. On the other side, she enjoys watching me eat, because of the weird enjoyment faces I make. Yes, I like to enjoy food (and other things).
@katylava I love to sing out loud. A couple of years ago I had my gallbladder taken out and they screwed up my vocal chords when they intubated me. I can't hit the notes I used to, now I sound like Alfalfa and it makes me sad. But I still try.
@lisaviolet That sucks and it makes me sad too. :-( And it's making me think twice about all of the scary things we have to sign off on when they do even the most simple procedure. Eek.
@katylava Starred for the meow-meows!
@joelmw my wife hates it when I sing out loud, mostly because I make up custom songs about her butt.
@katylava kittehs :)
@DaveInSoCal My wife loves it when I sing about her butt. She usually beats me to it. And whenever we're getting into or out of the car and I ask her to pop the trunk, she does one of these. I realize that I'm spoiled.
@lisaviolet Sorry to hear about the screwed up vocal chords - hearing a good singer sing is one of my favorite things on the planet. I, however, am NOT one of those singers, although that doesn't stop me from singing loudly every chance I get. And I don't have screwed up vocal chords - or maybe I ALWAYS have, since like, birth....hmmmm.....
@joelmw
@Headly So you think I oughta learn that shit and one day out of nowhere just bust a move? I had moves like Travolta way back in the day (hey, kids, he used to be cool), but I got more and more self-conscious with age. I think I've reached the tipping point though now, where I'm beginning to not give a fuck what people think.
@katylava I've heard you sing and it wasn't that bad- certainly better than I could do.
@dashcloud i'm pretty terrible except on songs i practice -- i mean a lot of practice.
@katylava Only time I've ever got more than a pass on Karoake Revolution is with a lot of drinking and a song I really liked.
@Headly Loved TC for doing this- It was the first time since "The Firm" [which I also loved] I was back to even liking him... He got so weird and full of himself for a while back there.
Yep, this is my word list. These are all different. But they're word related. And notice that I didn't swear, not one fucking time. Go me.
@joelmw " verisimilitude"... ahhhhh
@joelmw Did you ever read E.E. Doc Smith stories? They were largely responsible for my relatively expansive, if somewhat eclectic vocabulary by third grade.
@duodec
@duodec I did not. I read my own assortment of weirdness.
@duodec Ray Bradbury and the KJV Bible were two of the biggest early literary influences. Most Christians don't realize that King James English is actually a foreign language. But then when I got into junior high, Shakespeare came easy.
@joelmw Puns. As long at the pun maker doesn't say "pun intended (or not intended)". If the pun was intended and good we will get it. If not, try again!
@Headly I'm more bothered by "pun not intended," but you're quite right on the professed ones.
@joelmw PUNINTENTIONAL BUHUHUHUHUHUHUH
@joelmw You're a blinding flash and a deafening report, and by Klono's tungsten teeth and curving carballoy claws, you are one fine goat.
@Lotsofgoats I LOLed (not loudly, but still).
@duodec Aw, thanks. So if you look at whatever that is in the background, it's kinda goatlike. I wasn't familiar with the name when you said it, but this looks like the kind of stuff I would have enjoyed as a kid. It's kinda what Bradbury was--and, honestly, the Bible too--for me. And both like you said, with some unusual vocabulary and ideas.
@joelmw I read an article some years ago about a group of people who spoke no English at all being read a list of words or phrases that were English. They were asked to pick the one they liked best, based on sound alone. "Cellar door" won by a landslide. Say it out loud a few times.
@AnnaB Funny you'd mention that. I hang with a group of mostly Mennonite (I'm not but have a definite affinity) artists--with whom I was just on a conference call this week--some of whom have been working on a science-fiction/fantasy world called Seledor and based precisely on that fact. :-) One of the guys has trademarked the name and just this fall did a show featuring some of his pencil drawings of it.
@joelmw I love it! I've told people about the cellar door thing before and generally get a blank stare or a quizzical look. One of my favorite words based on sound alone is unctuous. Plus I'm a chef, so I like it for that, too.
@joelmw I too like books, like having them around... but dislike reading from them. Something about holding them open, trying to balance the bulk... an e-reader is one gadget that actually makes me feel less distracted by and more involved with the task at hand, which is unusual.
@joelmw Pilot G2-07. Not an expensive pen but it makes me happy.
@brhfl Thank you! I can't tell you how many of my bookish friends look down their noses at me and insist on the alleged purity of the experience of reading hardcopy. Not to mention all of the other practical benefits: search, capacity/availability of content, easier highlighting and annotating, inline dictionary, other resources.
@tightwad I'm a fan too. It writes well and there's nothing wrong with cheap. That's why we're here, right? :-)
@lisaviolet All potatoes have eyes...
@lisaviolet cheese! how did i forget to include cheese in my list?!!
Also, a nap. I usually can't nap, but right now...I think a nap would be swellest.
@Mavyn On the Batman note, a friend turned me on to "Batman: Brave and the Bold" on Netflix and it's hilarious. A very weird sendup of all these superheroes battling aliens while mocking the hell out of each other. Some are better than others, but they're all free on Netflix and burning 20 minutes on most of them isn't a bad thing.
@Mavyn There is nothing like a good nap - it's what they invented Sunday afternoons and TV golf for...
@Mavyn I also love pens. I have one of these. I really like it:
@Mavyn BATMAN STAMPS. I got some too. They went out on all our thank you cards.
@Headly What is that pen called? looks like something my dad would like
@editorkid Are they kid appropriate?
@Mavyn I think if the kid's familiar with the comics, they will be. They're rated Y7, I think.
@Headly Is that the Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point pen? I love mine like Barney loves purple.
@editorkid Thanks! both kids are older than that, so no worries. Sometimes it's a challenge to explain to the younger one that not all the batman stuff her big brother reads is ok for her. I'll check them out!
@editorkid @chellemonkey http://www.amazon.com/Dialog-Fountain-Medium-Point-L74M/dp/B002YQADS2 I have some issues with it initially. Here is my review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R12IK42S1V53XZ/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B002YQADS2&nodeID=1064954&store=office-products
@Headly Oh, cool; I didn't know Lamy made one too. The Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Pen is a click-style model that requires about the same amount of maintenance that you mention in your review, but it's tapered and very comfortable to hold. Pilot redesigned it some when it acquired Namiki; I liked the original, but a lot of folks are fine with the Pilot version. Nice to see other fountain pen fans around here.
@editorkid I love purple!
@editorkid There are (at least?) three versions of the Pilot/Namiki as well... The standard push-click, the skinnier and lighter (no metal interior) push-click, and a twisty. The standard version got me through college, and now I own... six of them?
@Headly @Mavyn @editorkid Okay, so I'm not into fancy fountain pens, but it just so happens that our receptionist handed me this pen this morning. It's got our name and address engraved on it. Apparently it came in an envelope addressed to me and they're looking for a sucker to buy a bunch and hand them out to--who-the-hell wants a pen with our name on it, I wonder. I probably wouldn't ever buy it, but it's gadgety, it's got good weight and I can use it with my mobile devices, so I'll take it. That and the fact that it was free and addressed to a low-level geek of a bureaucrat like me definitely makes me happier than it should.
@Headly OMG! I want a fountain pen soooobad! Should have bought the Cross pen that Office Depot sold for $20 just before Xmas. Couldn't justify laying that out on myself when I was shopping for other people.
@joelmw @Mavyn @editorkid Here is most of my pen collection
@Mavyn These pens made me sad: http://sellout.woot.com/offers/nvizio-7-piece-sunlight-collection-pen-set-with-190-piece-refill-set
@Headly I took shots of a few of my pens with the Lytro I bought on Woot last year; they're at https://pictures.lytro.com/bobinchicago (along with some of the glass I've made). The Platinum Koi with the music nib has especially good depth to click around in.
@editorkid Those light field cameras are very interesting
@Headly My interest in photography's in playing with depth of field, so it's a neat toy for me, especially with objects like fountain pens. A lot of people aren't as fascinated, which, in the spirit of this thread, is fine. I should take some regular pics of my pen collection, I guess.
@editorkid I so want one of those cameras. I may have even suggested in another thread that that would be a great meh. Cool photos, btw.
@joelmw Thanks. They do show up on Woot frequently and DailySteals occasionally, for what it's worth. Some people get pissed off because you actually have to think about what you're doing; it isn't a point-and-click and a lot of folks (including those in Woot's forums) think any camera that fits in a pocket should be one. But I love unusual cameras -- I just dropped off a roll of Tri-X shot with a wooden panoramic camera to be processed -- there are just so many neat hacks out there that how do you not slurp 'em up?
@editorkid Pilot didn't acquire Namiki, Pilot is Namiki. The company was founded in 1918 as Namiki, then in 1938 the name was changed to Pilot. They have continued to use the Namiki name for high-end pens over the years.
@ChunkyBitz Ah, thanks for the correction. It was referred to as an acquisition by folks on a fountain pen listserv I used to be on, so I blame society.
@editorkid I may actually have to start paying attention to Daily Steals and Woot! I'm mostly ecommerce monogamous. Because I'm lazy. Thanks for the heads up.
@joelmw Our company bought these and handed them out to us for our Christmas shindig, and it's awesome! :)
@kc5rbq At first I thought you meant the Lytro. That would have been super awesome. The pen would be cool too.
@joelmw Not that I'm an enabler or anything. I paid, I think, $130 and thought it was a great deal, so $75... http://electronics.woot.com/plus/lytro-light-field-digital-cameras-4
@editorkid So this is the model you've got and it does sufficiently cool stuff?
@editorkid Thanks for the headsup, btw. I'm working on the wife. See questions above.
@editorkid Also, is the extra memory worth it?
@joelmw I have the 8GB, and no, I'd say don't bother with 16GB. Lytro says the battery is good for around 400 shots, which happens to be the capacity of the 8GB model, so you're plugging it in at that point one way or another. The sensor's good enough that I've never needed a tripod -- exposures generally aren't a problem and there is a manual mode where you can bump up the ISO if you need to. As for doing cool stuff, there is a right way and a wrong way. Lytro's site has tips on use and especially composition -- with most cameras, you're composing in two dimensions, but here you have three, and they have tips for how to nail that focal depth feature to best effect. The one gotcha I'd suggest checking is looking to make sure the computer you'll be using with this meets their specs. I'm tied to an older version of their software because my 2011 MacBook Pro is a 2011 MacBook Pro. The graphics card seems to be the most common problem on either platform.
@joelmw Direct link to their system requirements: https://support.lytro.com/hc/en-us/articles/202590474 Check the compatibility links at the bottom as well. If your computer isn't awesome enough for them, they keep older versions of their software around.
@editorkid Thanks!
@joelmw Definitely check specs. I had to upgrade my OS to 64bit, which was a PITA. I like the camera--see it more as a toy than anything I use regularly. It's fiddly.
@editorkid @Mavyn Did it. Thanks for the push. The little woman is even excited about it (though she did say we need to put a moratorium on impulse purchases for at least a little bit). The fiddlyness is what I'm after: playing with light, focus, framing. We're good on the specs--at home and at work. And if I'm understanding correctly, I can upload images via wifi (with or without the assistance of my iThingy)?
@joelmw Well, cool. Share some of the photos you take if you would (or, who knows, if you use the same username there, maybe we'll just find you). I can't speak to wi-fi in part because there's no Android client and in part because I just plug the sucker into my laptop's USB and let it charge while it sends along the pictures. I think you assume correctly but can only promise to be just as dumbfounded as you if that's wrong.
@joelmw Oh! Don't put the camera into the sleeve with the lens cap on. Although you'll make that mistake only once. It's the one design flaw; I like to use the sleeve for obvious reasons, but it doesn't keep the lens clean at all.
@editorkid Thanks for another headsup. I'm not even sure how my account was set up, but I'm logged in via FB ('cause I don't care), but I just reserved my preferred user name. So, yeah, I'll be out there as joelmw.
@editorkid I may be missing your point here. I assume that the lens cap should still be used and that it will fit while the sleeve is on, but I should just be careful when I'm putting the sleeve on?
@joelmw Yes, should be able to upload via wifi. I've used it to move images over to my phone...no clue why.
@joelmw The lens cover end sticks out. The sleeve will let you put the lytro in either way, but if you put it in lens cover first, the lens cover will come off when you try taking the camera out and is a PITA to get the lens cover out of the sleeve.
@Mavyn @editorkid Pausing to say that this is so much better than going out as an anonymous user to listen to anonymous contributors in an anonymous forum--from review through technical details. Thanks again to both of you.
Hello @joelmw! I disappeared from the forums when I got busy in my personal life and at work, but I have missed them. So I'm gonna try to be around a little bit from now on. And I owe you a hearty CONGRATULATIONS for finally being the goat. :)

Something that pleases me way more than it should is peeling the cling film off of a new electronic device. Why would anyone love that?
I'm also crazy delighted when I get an email from my SO. We see each other nearly every day, so emails shouldn't be any big thing.
And the heated seats in my car are quite possibly the most excellent option a car can have. Seriously. You all need to get them.
@bluedyn I am very happy to see you back. :-)
@bluedyn And of course all of those things make perfect sense to me. My Sadie (S-80) has heated seats and even in Texas, they are very nice. The film is like the pop of a freshly opened bottle. You know that what's inside is fresh and shiny and new and just for you. Any word or sound from my beloved is probably the best thing that happens to me every day; but I don't think that pleases me more than it should. ;-)
@bluedyn so good to see you back! I've been wondering about your absence. Glad everything's alright!
@JonT You've seen me in Clash of Clans, so you had to know I was at least okay enough to pillage.
@joelmw I'm in Texas, too, and I thought it was moderately silly to get the heated seats. But fuck it, they're awesome! And yes, anything and everything from the SO is great, so maybe that pleases me exactly the right amount.
@bluedyn I have to say living in Ohio that my car doesn't have heated mirrors. I had no idea that that was a feature to worry about.....
@chellemonkey It was frosty here today, and those might have been handy. There's too damn many options for cars now.
@bluedyn Frosty? Frosty. Sigh. Apparently it SNOWED here. I was outside around 9 am and it was cold, but clear and sunny. And now SNOW. I like snow, but I prefer it not be a surprise.
@bluedyn I leave the cling film on new devices as long as possible just to prolong the excitement. I didn't realize how incredibly sad that is until I actually typed it out...
@amandasaurus I think what's ACTUALLY sad is that we don't get to encounter more of it in our lives. I get really cheesed off if someone gets to cling film before me on a new gadget, because surely they didn't enjoy it as much as I would.
@bluedyn I'm 100% with you on the heated seats. My husband has them in his car and it's def a requirement for my next car. Also, welcome back!
@amandasaurus Me too. There's a thread about that topic. Seems it bugs the crap out of some people if you leave the film on.
@bluedyn Now you're making me want to play Clash of Clans.
@bluedyn Our Volvo (sorta funny story: the first guy I knew that had one of these used to refer to it--excessively--as his manly car, because of the logo; I routinely change the vowels so that it sounds like a lady part) was secondhand; we bought it from our daughter and son-in-law who'd received it as a gift (from his mom) but couldn't afford the upkeep. I wouldn't have believed how nice those seats are.
@amandasaurus I leave the cling on as long as possible too! My hubby & BFF think I'm nuts. Nope. It's still new as long as the cling is on. Got a new laptop one time - left the cling on for as long as I had the laptop. So - still new. Completely logical in my book. Hubby & BFF almost stopped speaking to me. Woulda been their loss. ;)
O. M. G. What loser posted this? He forgot the s at the end of "Pleases." Really, meh, do you have to memorialize all of my stupidity? Do you have to? But MIBMMTIS. Sigh. I have to turn this into a weird thing that makes me happy: That moment when I finally get over a stupid mistake (or it gets corrected; hint, @JonT; puhleeze?).
@joelmw Shouldn't that be "puhleeze"?
@lisaviolet But it is. ;-p
@lisaviolet And, yes, I know that my stupid, annoying, embarrassing mistake is all my fault. Totally. Though I bet I could find a way to blame someone else.
@joelmw Can we further mock you for not noticing the error for most of an hour? :P
@Mavyn Oh please do.
@joelmw
@Mavyn @lisaviolet So the thing is that I'm an excessive self-editor and I truly obsess over these things. I consider it something of an accomplishment that I didn't triple check it. So there's that.
@joelmw Congratulations! In truth...you have mentioned your tendency before, so I admit to poking it. Typos of this nature actually please me to see, for the fun little mental journeys they provide. Forgive me...It's been one of those days.
@joelmw I was so very sad at your misspelling in a forum thread title, but in spite of it, I chose to reply, as are several others. So take that as a reason to be happy, perhaps? Popular thread?
@bluedyn I'll take it. And, sister, we've had a rough week.
@JonT Dude, that's at least twice that you bailed me out big time. I don't take it for granted. You are literally the best moderator I have ever known. In fairness, some of them are real dicks, but I've known some good ones too.
@Headly
@joelmw
@Headly Oh, and watching the ISS fly over head, and watching SpaceX try to land a rocket on a boat. Actually that doesn't please me more than it should...
Snail mail
Cilantro
Puns, horrible ones
Spicy soup and hot bread on frigid days
And the magic word: Julie Andrews!
-Really good chocolate chip cookies. I'm not just a push over for any old cc cookie. If I ate one really good cookie a day I would be completely happy.
-People that talk to themselves. Be they insane or not. Only because I often do this myself...sometimes outloud.
-Obscure music, any and all genres. Track of the day,
-Frank's Red Hot on kettle cooked potato chips
@jimmyd103 I talk to myself all the time.
@joelmw Yes you do.
@jimmyd103 Damn, that's good. I can confess now that I wasn't expecting much, just 'cause, well, you know, musical tastes are personal. I like all kinds of music too. Here are two of the weirder things I like, though honestly, they're both mostly mainstream now. I went through a phase where all I wanted to hear was Die Antwoord. Their videos are pretty cool too.
@jimmyd103 I totally tripped when I first heard Matisyahu, because, well, Hasidic reggae, two movements that fascinate me but that I never expected a mashup from. Philosophically I love the direction he's gone, but I like the old music better.
@jimmyd103 Nice, I think I hear the PFunk choir. And I put that shit on everything!
This commercial, which I should find gross, but I can't help laughing every time it comes on:
@pitamuffin Can't say I have viewed this one before. But it made me laugh!
Purple!
@Barney I hear some people really love purple.
@Barney
@Barney orange > purple...
@DJP519 I love purple!
@rockblossom Awww.
@Headly Hmm.
@Barney me too...obviously...
That post rain ozone smell.
Terrible pop music that makes me wanna dance in my chair and sing off key.
The mildly bittersweet feeling you get on a gloomy day, but are still in a good mood.
My husband's beard - really, I hide stuff in it when he's asleep sometimes.
@Thumperchick
@Headly This ^ made me giggle.
@Thumperchick Ooo yeah, starred for rainsmell!
The look on people's faces when:
1. I whistle, and my cat comes running to me.
2. They ask whether my farm pond is good for swimming.
Minions.

@Mavyn My son is obsessed with Minions.
@Keyeno I'm not obsessed, but they do make me smile. These were made for a friend. They went in a minion lunch box with some little bottles of wine and red cup for minon pong.
Went with hubby to Target today. Saw these 2 loan pepper shakers and cold not resist. Hubby thinks I'm crazy as we sure as hell don't need pepper shakers. But they make me so damn happy looking at them!
@Teripie What's a loan pepper shaker?
@Teripie Those are adorable! I think they please you just the right amount!
@juststephen I'm guessing lone.
@juststephen LOL! I knew something didn't look right in that post.
@Teripie @juststephen Mavyn But there are two of them. I figured (okay, not immediately, but it quickly came to mind) that you have friends who are always borrowing your pepper. I don't know why, but it could be a thing. Hey, you said it.
@phatmass I love the way the first three are so sublime and sweet (and they are indeed awesome). And then you follow up with wanton destruction. I approve. :-)
@joelmw Lil Bub!
I laugh my ass off every time my wife shares this damn pic on FB. I have no idea why I do, but I am (fairly) certain it is pathological. Weird thing: makes me happy.
I know, FML.
And, my son's laugh. THAT makes me happy!
@Pavlov To clarify - my son has had an uphill battle with Tourette's, even though he is quite gifted, it is difficult for him socially - when he laughs genuinely, it is quite an odd laugh, and even he'll admit it . . . but when it is a genuine laugh it strikes me deeply and makes my heart soar. So in the vein of the thread, it is in fact a weird thing, but oh how happy it makes me to hear it. Because I know in that moment he is here, he is present and not lost in a construct he creates to help him cope - in that moment, he's just being HIM. And it is beautiful. Even if it is a weird laugh. Maybe it makes me more happy than it should, only in that it is so rare, and so appreciated . . . And, I'll always have the damn kitty on the other days.
@Pavlov That's beautiful. I doubt that it's possible to be too happy about something like that.
@Pavlov This made me happy.
Today I was scrounging for food in our house because we haven't been grocery shopping in too long. Came across a can of tuna and was pretty darn pleased.
Other things that please me:
My Horror Block subscription. Monthly I get horror related stuff delivered to my door in a cool little box. Every month guarantees a t-shirt plus other stuff. Each time I see it has arrived I'm absurdly excited.
Along the same lines- horror comic books like Tales from the Crypt. I'm always hoping for some unknown reason, Meh will be able to get ahold of a cache of these and sell them by 30 packs. This will never happen, but a girl can dream.
Watching football with my husband. Seeing our team win or the Patriots lose (sorry Pats fans but I love to hate me some Patriots).
The ocean. I've only ever been twice, but it makes me really happy. I wish I lived closer.
Mopeds. Not scooters. I have a '78 Vespa Piaggio that I used to ride around on sometimes (until my husband took it apart and wasn't able to fix it).
And Meh. I love checking it every night, and I am REALLY excited for my 4th fuku.
@ABitterWoman I am from Boston, but you hate the Pats the way I hate the Yankees, and everyone should have a team like that. Your hatred is fine with me. (But just think... if you'd grown up in Boston, you'd be near the ocean and a Pats fan. Win-win!)
@editorkid Not sure I could ever like the Pats unless you could someday love the Yankees, haha. But I hear Boston is beautiful and I'd love to go there someday. One of my favorite older shows is Cheers.
@ABitterWoman Wow - only been to the ocean twice?!? I guess I take living near it for granted. I also travel to Hawaii four or five times a year for work. Thanks for reminding me that sometimes the things we take for granted really do matter and that others could be missing out on them. Happy Friday!
@debraae Hawaii? ? Sounds like the best job ever! Happy Friday to you as well!
@ABitterWoman The ocean is one of the purest and most powerful and transcendent things, I'm gonna go ahead and say in all of the universe (but maybe I should get out beyond the planet more; I am a fan of http://apod.nasa.gov/). I love the combination of fear and joy that it inspires, I mean especially when you're standing right next to it or out in it and it's so overwhelming.
@ABitterWoman Yes, it's a pretty great job. And another thing I shouldn't take for granted!! :) If anyone ever needs advice about Kauai, I'm your girl!
@JonT Obligatory "I'd be so excited for a fukubukuro too" comment, with sad goat face.
@joelmw
@joelmw That picture makes me feel such awe and joy. I guess fear would be correct too, if I were near it, as you said. Sorry about your loss of Fuku.
Tonight I'm going to be thankful for chicken enchiladas. It might not be the ocean, but it will make me momentarily happy.
@debraae Holy Crap!! You go to Hawaii 4-5x a year for work?!?! My DREAM is to go to Hawaii!! I will trade you my bottle of Rumchata for one of your trips to Hawaii!! haha
@Purplefroggie Yep, I'm a lucky girl! Hmmm....Rumchata for Hawaii.....I'm have to think about that! ;) Here's the view from where I usually stay...the ocean is right behind those trees @Abitterwoman
@debraae Man that's beautiful!
@debraae ohhhh wow.....ok..ok... I'll throw in 2 bottles of Rumchata and 2 bottles of Fireball. ....
That's amazing. .a great job with great benefits! ! Congrats!
@debraae I'll trade you my fuku 4...
@Kidsandliz Hmmmm.... Maybe!!! ;-)
Kicking a pile of leaves as I'm walking through them. The sound, the feeling, and then the sight.
When the very top of a shallow puddle freezes and you crack it as you step in it.
The burn on my palate after that first bite of pizza. (This is one of the ways I know Chicago doesn't have pizza.)
The way my cat, when she's on my lap, tucks her paw into my elbow, because it's even warmer there.
@editorkid I spent more than an hour watching friends crunch ice alongside the Delaware River. It was good.
@editorkid Aww...pets are awesome. I love the way my dog dances a happy dance when I get up from eating and he's anticipating leftovers.
@editorkid That ice thing: yes. Ice generally.
@joelmw Ice? You mean that stuff that comes out of the freezer compartment?
@lisaviolet This kind. But I prefer what falls from the sky or occurs when the temperature dips. :-)
@lisaviolet
@joelmw I'm lost. Ice falls from the sky?
@lisaviolet Right into @joelmw's glass, from the looks of it.
Actually, hail is on my list too. I will always go out and watch it and stand in it and generally be an idiot in it.
@editorkid Don't like to drive in it, love to stand in it.
@Mavyn Alongside the Delaware... May I ask where you live?
@Cinoclav Poconos. :)
@Mavyn Ahh... Delaware River covers a long stretch.
@Cinoclav Very!
@editorkid When I lived in Oklahoma hail was generally something you did not want to stand in… I once took a bird with a broken wing from hail to the wildlife shelter. Hail bounces on cement, puts holes though umbrellas (and does not slow it down enough not to hurt)… better to watch it from under a metal car port roof. Louder than heck but you can enjoy seeing how high it can bounce.
@Kidsandliz Sounds like OK gets hail the size of canned hams. Here in Chicago it's rarely bigger than a pea.
@editorkid Except for the time last Spring when it was about the size of golf balls. I thought every window on my house was going to shatter, and I've never heard noise like that before. It did, however, get me a new roof from my insurance company.
Butterscotch anything, dragons, and the colors purple and green. I'm so obsessed with those particular things that it could be a sin.
@Keyeno Anne McAffrey makes the best dragons.
@phatmass The first book I read by her was Dragonsong when I was 13. My mom has her whole series and I have The Coelura book.
@Keyeno Purple and Green my favs too..
I like purple.
I forgot to mention the fukubukuro song. It makes me really happy.
@ABitterWoman I'd completely forgotten about this one.
@Thumperchick Lucky! It gets stuck in my head every time a Fuku pops up. Sometimes just randomly as well.
Things that make me more happy than they should...
1. Shoes. Especially boots.
2. Reading.
3. Getting a great deal and for really cheap - the harder it is to get it, the happier I feel. Even if it's something I don't need. Damn, I LOVE a good deal.
4. My favorite hockey player getting a goal. Like I had anything to do with it?!? Oh well, it still makes me happy.
5. Finally owning a red car.
6. Fireball.
@debraae Good deals are the best!! I especially love flipping things for profit. Just bought my first auction yesterday (100 iPhone 3gs for $10 each). They aren't worth a ton anymore but there is still profit there. Hoping it goes well.
@debraae mmmm Fireball...now I need to run to the store I just realized I am out...oooh and Rumchata too!! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!
@ABitterWoman I always tell myself I'm gonna start flipping things that I get and don't need - still haven't done it! I got to go to an Ellen Christmas show one year - didn't need half the things I got (it was a CRAZY amount of stuff!). Told myself I would sell them - never did - they were MY things and FREE! Can't get a better deal than that, LOL! ;) You'll have to teach me to sell things. Good luck with your phone lot!
@Purplefroggie I've heard Fireball + Rumchata = ahmehzing. But haven't tried it - something about the name 'Rumchata' scares me a little.....
@debraae NOO don't be scared its awesome! You can add almost anyting to it and make it a completely new and awesome drink! Yes Fireball+ Rumchata+ Cinnamon Toast Crunch...( Rumchata by itself is kind of tastes like a melted vanilla milk shake with a slight hint of cinnamon) I love adding Hershey's dark choclate syrup aand mixing it and dirnking over ice, its like a chocolate Milk shake with a kick!. add pumpkin liquor and tatse like pumpkin pie ( put some n a pumpkin latte...yum,!!) so many things you can do with Rumchata, go on thier website they have about a zillion recipes. I plan to try the Rumchata chocolate pudding soon!!
@Purplefroggie Okay, you've convinced me. I will purchase some ASAP and let you know how it goes :)
@debraae awesome, let me know!! Also I am in the same boat about flipping things..like 60 of those damn neoprene sleeves I bought...Mayeb some Rumchata and Fireball will help motivate me to sell them!! :-)
@debraae You live an absurdly interesting life. Like the female equivalent of the most interesting man in the world. And selling things is a breeze (online). If you ever have questions, feel free to ask. :D
@ABitterWoman Maybe Meh would buy those iPhones to bundle with speaker docks...
@editorkid Boom! Haha. Worst case scenario maybe a few of the 90 neoprene sleeves I bought will fit them. Bundle!
I like purple
@debraae Hockey Happiness is one of my favorite kinds of happy!
@Purplefroggie Followed through on my promise: Rumchata = THE BEST THING ON THE PLANET. Thank you. thank you. THANK YOU!!! How has this existed and I haven't known about it?!? I want to be your friend forever.
@pooflady #4 seems awesome, but the problem is preparing food makes me unreasonably miserable
@pooflady Agree #2, good call! And also I really love that moment when you are seeing a movie or reading a book for the first time and you are LOVING it and realize whatever happens next it will be the only time you see it (or read it) for the very first time.
Seeing other people's happy joys. It makes me happy. Happy like a kid.
@joelmw

I'm giggling like crazy right now.
@joelmw oh ewe.
Random question: Do you all get an email every single time someone replies with an @ ? Sometimes I go back into posts and see people responded to me but I never got notified even with the @abitterwoman . It gives me weird anxiety thinking people might think I was just rude and didn't respond.
@ABitterWoman no I only get an email letting me know once in a blue moon....
@ABitterWoman No, I don't. When I got goat, people said my email would be crazy. It wasn't because I didn't get all of the notifications.
@ABitterWoman If you go back to the thread before the email is triggered, it doesn't get sent.
Sitting with a book, dog on my lap, cheese and crackers and a martini next to me on the side table. This makes me deliriously happy.
@AnnaB My dog is too big for that but its still a happy thought
This really silly car wash video pleases me.
I was just reminded of something else that brings me joy. Winter sunsets in Southern California. I just took these about fifteen minutes ago. (There's a small airport on the other side of the hill - Gillespie Field.)
@hallmike I love staring at clouds. And I forgot...blue skies make me happy.
I love purple.
I forgot two things:
@brhfl I love PURPLE!
@Barney Thank you for indulging me. :)
@carl669 I see the stork has upgraded to shipping in boxes like everyone else…
@carl669 I heart this picture.
@carl669 Awww.
Bacon
Having people favorite and retweet me, especially if they are a big deal.
Coffee, I love coffee like @Barney loves purple
Cats that actually cuddle, only one of mine does
Reading
Being near the ocean
Sleeping in
@iluvmingos My cat is a little obsessive about cuddling.

@iluvmingos
@iluvmingos If you love coffee, maybe you'll be interested in this very nice manual coffee maker? http://www.manual.is/coffee Got one for a coffee-loving family member and they were very happy.
@iluvmingos I love purple!
@editorkid My male cat will actually crawl up and put his paws around my neck and nuzzle. It's great until he decides that it's time to chew on my hair, then he gets a little too aggressive about it.
@dashcloud Very cool! It looks like a piece of art. My son has something similar for brewing tea, but not quite as nice as this.
@katylava Maggie is cuddling between my arms right now, as I'm typing. She does not approve of the laptop.
I totally forgot to mention... this meme:
The Meh Theme Song makes me smile. I play it every morning in the bathroom. Good times.
Cookie butter. That stuff is amazing. Wish I was closer to a Trader Joe's (3 hours away). Come to think of it, Trader Joe's in its entirety pleases me more than it should.
@djslack I assume that's some cookie-themed spread?
@djslack You might want to try this... http://www.benjerry.com/flavors/spectacular-speculoos-cookie-core
@brhfl it's like peanut butter but made out of ground up cookies. @Cinoclav thanks! Gonna have to find some of that Ben & Jerry's.
@djslack I live within 5 minutes of 3 different Trader Joe's. I love, very much, that no matter from which direction I am headed home, I can stop by a TJ's and pick up groceries.
@djslack Cookie butter is good stuff.
@djslack Interesting, sounds like something I would like to try once. So, I guess I will.
@djslack I went way out of my way to get to a Trader Joe's last time I was away just so I could pick up a container of Speculoos (which I had heard about in the Mediocre forums). Then days later when I was home I noticed this in my local grocery:

Oh well, the Trader Joe's Speculoos is delicious, and now that I know what it is, I can get more locally.
@curtise awesome! There is a Biscoff(?) variety available here that I don't like as much but my girlfriend prefers it. I'll have to keep an eye out for this kind though.
This makes me happy.
@lisaviolet OMG!!! That is so cool! I am sooo jealous!
Home making foods I know most people buy pre-made. Possibly a little snobby, but it's true.
@Mavyn That first homemade pie crust was a moment of total pride for me. Yogurt and butter we other homemade projects worth doing.
@Thumperchick Cheese, crackers, bread, cookies, bacon, sausage, ice cream...lots. I think crackers caused the most disbelief.
A dinner party idea I had a few years ago was everyone make different flavoured butters to go with different courses of the meal. Everyone would get a container, add the ingredients, and then shake!
Yeah...that's why I don't have dinner parties.
Making sausages. Euphemisms aside, there is something primal and good about making sausages. This was a 'first date' thing for my SO and I, as well,so that, too.
@Mavyn On your list, I've made crackers, cookies, and ice cream. Crackers were the only one not worth it. I had no idea they'd be so labor-intensive and so, well, meh once they were done. (I think I used the Good Eats recipe.) I've also made pop-tarts, using the Smitten Kitchen recipe. Also too labor-intensive, although they vanished quickly. (I filled them with some of those precious preserves wine.woot used to sell, which worked really well.)
@editorkid I'll be honest--there are some things I make because my allergies mean I can't locate a 'safe' version to purchase. But crackers--I thought they were fun!
@Mavyn There might be better recipes than Brown's. I admit I'm not eager to search, though.
The saltines were the ones that I liked most. Easy to make, and they were more buttery than the store bought ones.
Bangers and mash with gravy and
Pork Pie with hot water crust pastry.
@Mavyn Bangers and mash... soooo good
Roller derby. It's a love hate relationship, but it has changed me for the better.
@MsELizardBeth Wow, we have a lot of roller derby queens here! This goes out to you:
@JonT WHAT? Who else!?
@JonT Also I totally rocked my meh shirt for my 5 hour men's practice Sunday and had to tell them all about meh, so you'll probably have a few more!
@MsELizardBeth I feel like I'm going crazy because I can't find it, but I could have sworn I saw at least 2 other people say they did derby in a thread. I'll keep looking.
@JonT @MsELizardBeth https://meh.com/forum/topics/advanced-movie-screenings#53c6fed9a4644f30085e94af
@JonT The other two references I found were @MsELizardBeth herself.
@JonT BTW, do you know why (has it maybe been addressed elsewhere) a Google site search misses so much at meh? Like, I wanted to find the time I referenced Thufir in a twofer thread and couldn't.
@joelmw that was definitely one of them, @PurplePawPrints! It was in another recent thread and someone replied to her saying they also did derby.
Not quite sure about the google search stuff, if I had to guess it's because we didn't allow robots to crawl our site for a while and that included the mighty Google bots so older threads might not have been indexed if they fell off the forums before we allowed robots in.
@MsELizardBeth @joelmw Found it! @CozzaFrenzy was the one I missed.
@JonT hahaha thanks for the nod ;)
@joelmw If you were a roller derby person you'd talk about it a lot too, I bet! @cozzafrenzy knows what I'm talkin' about! :)
