March 26 -- Dontcha just love...
8When you wake up thinking it is Monday and then you realize it is Sunday! Momentary panic aside that I might have overslept for work, it was nice to realize I had another day “off”.
Now, if only we can convince my mil not to call at 7 am!
So…cupcakes…have to make cupcakes for a family gathering and then, later in the week, sweets for a fundraiser…
What is your favorite flavor combination for cupcakes? What is your favorite nibble at events? I ask my friends what I should make and they kindly say “everything you make is great”, but I am bored with what I have made before…inspire me! Care to share some tried and true crowd pleasers?
Have a sparkling day!

Friday I took my daughter to the bakery I call the cupcake store. She got white with strawberry frosting and I got carrot cake. They make their cupcakes without paper cups and frost them upside down so the frosting is on the bottom and sides.
@sammydog01 why? I would think it would be hard to balance them upside down? Unless they are either reeally good at filling the pan or they cut off the good part?
Love white cake and strawberry…
@mikibell I don’t want to do the math but the frosting covered surface area is significantly higher. Cupcake tops are fairly flat if you don’t overfill them- they don’t fall over. Next time we go I’ll take a photo.
@sammydog01 cool…very interesting… I have a friend who cuts off the top and inverts it to make like an oreo effect with the frosting…
Cupcakes w lots of chocolate chips and then some serious fudge icing might be nice.
I should mention that all cupcakes which don’t have phony ingredients are pretty nice.
@f00l I could eat fudge frosting right out of the bowl… yummyy…
Cupcakes with bacon topping would be good- maybe chocolate frosting with bacon pieces.
Buttercream or mint are also good flavors.
@dashcloud I have maple frosting… my evil children like the frosting from a can better than homemade frosting But maple and bacon… on cinnamon cupcakes… yummmyyy…
There were these bacon-maple topped cupcakes at a local fair last year that were awesome. But my favorite remain my birthday cake style cupcakes of orange cake with dark chocolate frosting. Yes, that again.
@duodec oh mannnn… before I even read that “Yes, that again” that is what I thought… … gotta love you for your convictions!
Speaking of Lisaviolet, where is she?? @lisaviolet?
@mikibell Why in the fuck can’t I rename a folder on my network? I used to be able to rename a folder on my network. Now I can’t.
It’s making me nuts. I have to make a folder on my desktop, name it, then move it to the network directory. One can only have so many “new folders”…
@lisaviolet right click, rename doesn’t work?
@mikibell Nope. I’ve searched high and low for an answer, someone said it happens after an update with files that need to be removed via regedit and it still won’t rename. I have an external drive setup to run via my router and I can’t name new folders and I can’t change the name of current folders.
The official message is “Item not found”.
WTH. I have two and a half months of customer accounts to set up, two and a half months of invoicing to do and then on to the taxes. I want to make easter cards.
Yet, here I am, wasting time on something that’s really not that big of a deal.
Works fine on my other PC.
@lisaviolet darn windows! I am sorry…skip the invoicing, go straight to the cards!
@lisaviolet That it’s fine on one but not the other sounds like a user’s rights issue. Do you have different login names between the two computers?
@lisaviolet Almost certainly not your issue, but the only time I’ve heard of not being able to rename or do something to a file/folder has been the item is too deeply nested, and the new item would push you over the limit (255 characters for the total path).
@dashcloud
I would look first at nesting and path length, and then at rights. Is the local login an admin login on both machines? Do you need to take ownership of the remote folder?
Are they both win machines with standard networking or did you do some other setup?
@f00l Just standard networking off of a router. The drive is mapped. I can make a new folder on that drive, but I cannot name it. I can add things, I can edit things, I can delete things, I just can’t rename the damn things. I can do everything else.
What I started doing was making the folder on my desktop, then moving it over to the mapped drive, in the correct directory. Photographs -> catpix -> 2017 -> march. (March was my new folder.)
This just started recently, but from what I’ve seen in my research, it’s been happening for a while.
@narfcake Well, I hadn’t changed anything since setting up this system. It worked before. I’ve tried working with the networked drive as a networked drive, I’ve tried working with it as a mapped drive.
I am admin, I have complete and full access to all files. If I’m working on a certain photo in my graphics program and “save as” using a different name, it saves properly.
I just can’t rename the damned folder.
@lisaviolet
I dunno. Win networking. : (
Have you tried un-mapping and re-mapping the drive? Is this the sort of prob where when you search for info, you get a long set of results about the same problem?
@f00l Yeah, I see where people have been having this issue for years. Some back to 2006.
It’s just annoying.
Hey, are you into mysteries? We had one this morning.
http://journal.lisaviolet.com/lv/article/sunday_morning_mystery
@lisaviolet Maybe the command line version will work? “net use” is what you would use to work with network/mapped drives, if you can’t just use move with the folder name you want.
Have you rebooted recently?
@lisaviolet You forgot to say may I?
@cranky1950 no comment on desserts from you?? Figured you would have a yummy suggestion… that you did not make, but the women-folk did
@mikibell I don’t desert much anymore. About every 6mos or so I get the urge and go to the store and grab a frozen cobbler (Mrs Smiths) and a half gallon of cheep vanilla bean ice cream and have hot cobbler and ice cream once because the estrogen units in the family kill the damn thing before I get back to it. But I just don’t cake much.
@cranky1950 I said a lot of other words; none of them worked.
@lisaviolet Click the properties tab and see if “read only” is checked or active.
@cranky1950 you may be cranky from the 50s, but you make me smile!
@lisaviolet If the drive is a USB plugged into the router, can you plug it directly into a PC instead? If the drive is internal to the router (so its acting like a NAS) what is the drive format? A lot of NAS devices use Linux filesystems, which do not fully emulate wintel file protections, but you may still be able to review them from your PC.
If the filesystem is linux make sure the filenames are actually something.dir - linux can, I believe, have directories with different filetypes and that may confuse windows.
If the disk can be plugged into a PC directly (so it shows up as a drive letter directly without mounting/mapping, etc) and it is readable, try running a full CHKDSK on it, but after checking the permissions (including advanced) on the directories you are having problems with. If it comes up and says you need to format it, don’t. Its probably a Linux or nonstandard filesystem.
You should also probably have a cupcake; They’re always good and helpful.
@cranky1950 Yeppers, it was checked. Unchecked it, now it’s busy changing the attributes. Looks like this will take a while, there are a lot of photographs.
I’ll let you know if we’re in for a celebration in a few hours. lol
@duodec It’s an external hard drive (Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB Portable Hard Drive) connected to a NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S - AC2600. When I’m on the PC (win 7), I can rename the folders. When I’m on the laptop (win 10), I cannot.
I can make the new folder on my desktop, name it, and move it to the external drive (which is what I’ve been doing). I have no problem adding to or editing what’s in it.
I can delete folders. But I can’t make a new folder and change the name from “new folder” to a proper name or rename an existing folder. And it pisses me right off. I want to punch it in the face.
@lisaviolet
What is the formatting on that drive?
Have you tried taking ownship of a folder that is parent to the ones troubling you?
Can you put Win10 into some sort of legacy mode and then rename the folder? (I wouldn’t know)
@f00l @cranky1950 @duodec
After unchecking the “read only” box and hours later it’s done, still having the problem.
Something I hadn’t realized, but I can change some of the folder names. Others I cannot.
Still searching I found this thread. Reading through it now.
Looks like there’s a fix on the way, it’s just not here yet. Well, there’s hope. And six hours of my life gone. lol
Livin’ the dream, man, livin’ the dream.
@lisaviolet
I have almost completely quit using Win. Bleah.
(Never had a Win7 machine.)
And I already have plenty of TLA’s and ISP’s and various corporations spying out all I do. I don’t really want to add M$ to that list.
@f00l I checked, the firmware update had been rolled out, just updated mine and now it works.
Amazing. It was the router. Whooda thunk?
@lisaviolet hurrrrrrrrrrrrayyyyyyy!!!
@mikibell Cupcakes for everyone! Even the barfy orange and chocolate ones!
@lisaviolet
@f00l Re: Spying…
Yeah, I expect a knock at the door any day now when they come to get me because I used some variation of the word “fuck” over a million times online…
@dashcloud Command lines …I still miss DOS.
@OldCatLady I still drop to DOS from Windows when I get stuck finding something…soooo much easier! (totally showing my age!!!)
@OldCatLady DOSBox & FreeDOS are there if you want the nostalgia.
@OldCatLady
once upon a time i could rock DOS.
why oh why did i never make self learn linux beyond stuff like directory changes? perhaps because i liked all that multimedia shit? or cause I like doing regedits with a machete and taking bets on whether the machine will boot? (it always did.)
/giphy lazy
@f00l hey…that is Titus Andromeda!
@mikibell Andromedon…
I’m pretty simple. My favorite is devil’s food with a fudge frosting. (I don’t like actual fudge though.)
@RiotDemon
Ok, just send me all the fudge that crosses your path, and I’ll arrange to dispose of it safely.
No worries, I got this.
@RiotDemon see I am either extreme… give me devil’s food or give me angel food… I am not really happy in the middle. Course, having said that, can’t say I ever said no to a cupcake (unless it was orange flavored @duodec)…
@mikibell angel’s food is also good.
If you buy premixed versions of both, you mix them together with water and it makes an easy mug cake.
I love Betty Crocker’s chocolate cake (devil’s food). If I make a homemade cake, that’s what I’m making.
@RiotDemon I have made cakes from scratch…and love the black forest cake I made…but if I am taking the time to decorate…box mix is what they get same if I am donating to the bake sale…then I can just send in the ingredient label…
I have not done a mug cake yet… I don’t need the calories when there is always a tray of brownies to be had…the little one loves baking brownies!
@mikibell I have too much going on right now, but you have much blame coming your way soon. And I will post it in one of these threads since your blame thread’s load time are beginning to annoy me.
p.s. I don’t have a backyard or a fucking garden right now, I have fucking betta fish.
@mfladd
Don’t you have a few betta fish as well as some snails?
@shruggie yup, 4 betta, 6 snails, 6 catfish.
@mfladd
Ever seen this?
@shruggie hehe…I love it.
@mfladd how is the load speed my fault??
@mikibell
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@mikibell What the fuck do you not understand about being goat? EVERYTHING is your fault.
@mfladd I swear…being goat is like being an in-law!
https://www.teeturtle.com/products/cupcakes
@narfcake I have a similar tshirt from woot…might be halloween themed…
@mikibell This one?
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/cupcake-costume-party
There is a local fancy cupcake place that has one of my favorites–Salted Caramel. It’s a buttery cupcake base that’s not really that sweet, it tastes more like good fluffy pancakes than a sweet cake. That is topped with a salted caramel buttercream frosting and if i remember correctly drizzled with a little more caramel sauce. It’s been about a year since I’ve had one so I might not have all the details correct.
@djslack Inaccurate reporting is a danger to a free society! Go verify your data! Hurry!
@OldCatLady @djslack…we also need proof of said cupcakes…send to our homes…
People, I am tougher than all of you combined, when in the trenches and under fire. I can prove it. I just survived an all-female baby shower.
There were mini-cupcakes. I think they were done by a professional bakery: devil’s food for the cake part, with a kinda stiff white candy icing that tasted like and had the texture of mint-vanilla divinity candy. These cupcakes were seriously very tasty.
A great many wonderful baby gifts were given and opened. Much wine and champagne were consumed. Ivanka hairstyles seem to be quite popular nowadays among the thirtysomething females. Curiously, the thirtysomethings were all far far more dressed up than anyone over the age of 50, wearing cocktail dresses and strappy sandals. Ha Ha Ha, with age comes wisdom, I guess.
In a house with tile floors, and about 50 partially drunken guests all talking at once, the noise level was about what you’d expect.
Guys, wanna prove you’re tough? Got courage? Attend one of these as the only male present. My brother showed up briefly to get the car keys from his wife, and he had this look on his face of overwhelming mingled fear and awe. He was not wanting to stay.
I am not for these sorts of things, but I love my niece who is beyond awesome, and therefore I must be there. Much much alcohol and people to drink it with assisted my survival. Winnie the Pooh was conveyed. Christopher Robin was promised (B&N didn’t have the poetry books locally.)
Now I have to sober up again. No hurry tho.
@f00l You’re female?
@f00l
I did that once.
It wasn’t so bad.
@f00l at least you got to drink…a REALLY tough woman stands in the middle of that room, with a huge basketball shaped belly and doesn’t drink! Been there, done that…thank God, never again!
@f00l Oh shit. I guess I should have read your whole post first. (but you’re wordy)
@mfladd said:
@someRiverNoise’s answer might do
@mikibell
According to my incredibly responsible and happy and wonderful pregnant niece-in-law, she is allowed to drink a little, perhaps 1/2 glass of wine a week. Per doctor’s orders. Sometimes she does this.
PS I agree that you are tougher than me. No contest, and I freely concede any argument.
@mfladd
Wait a second…
Who are you and what did you do to the real @mfladd? There was an apology before, and an apology doesn’t make sense.
@f00l yeah…that 1/2 glass of …doesn’t cut it with a roomful of evil in-laws… I actually was blessed, they were out of the country for my baby shower…unfortunately, couldn’t get rid of them for completely…
@mfladd no matter how you read it, she is still female!
@mikibell Ha! Then I only skimmed the sentance that said: “attend as the only male present” Then I just thought I got it wrong.
@shruggie apology is a “strong” word. Plus, I have brief moments of weakness (very brief).
@f00l from now on you are just…
to me.
@mfladd
Ok
@mfladd i was gonna say “you’re male?” @f00l is just too cool.
@mollama
Why thanks!
/giphy "too cool for the room"
@mfladd said:
Yeah, all those words. Tough tough tough!
I know it must hurt.

@mfladd
You have an interesting boogie thing going. I guess it’s the yoga.
And thanks for sharing!
@f00l I assume there was an inordinate amount of giggling.
@cranky1950
You’re wrong there.
There was a bit of talking about how useful or beautiful or cool various items were. And beyond that, there were a bunch of political jokes and people discussing house repair-remodel choices and whether the work would boost house value relative to cost, career choices, baby issues or baby memories, investment banking, legal issues (many lawyers, financiers, accountants present), where they’re flying to next (work-related), and did someone just land a huge contract. That sort of thing.
However, the gathering may have been more stereotypical in a female direction, in the sense that I heard zero mention of major-league sports.
Baby showers are not quite what they may have been once.
@f00l I call bullshit
@cranky1950
On what? My description of the conversations? The mom-to-be is a lead lawyer on corporate asset evaluations and contracts involving their valuation.
You lose.
FWIW, I heard zero giggling.
@f00l I’m sorry that’s just not possible. Aha you’re going deaf!
@cranky1950
I’ll be sure to tell her that her law degree and partnership in a very tony firm are imaginary, based on an person’s internet evaluation of reported conduct at a baby shower. : )
Ya know, if you actually attended one of these, with a bunch of young women with very nice careers attending, you might know what went on at one.
I expected it to be a bit more “typical” (from my memory of these in days past). But perhaps what I participated in on Sunday is what’s “typical” now.
@f00l is she a trial lawyer?? I always wondered how women who were pregnant and had to stand most of the day survived? I had ankles the size of elephant feet and I was allowed to prop my feet up at work!!!
Is this her first baby? Your first great-niece?? LOVE my greats … get to sugar them up and send them home… I have 9 of them, alas most of them are older than my kids, so payback is scary!
@mikibell
My wonderful niece-in-law is not a trial attorney. Does corporate work.
We do have a prosecutor in the family tho. I’ll have to ask that one what it was like when she was working and expecting. Perhaps she wasn’t working in court then?
@f00l The last one I went to (2 years ago) had stereotypical stoopid games, tacky ‘prizes’, and high volume. It was a multicultural event: redneck white (GED eventually, age 27), blue-collar Puerto Rican, educated (paralegal) Muslim. Clothing tracked with education level: T-shirt/jeans, Sunday outfits, semi-dressy with nice shoes. Conversation was fragmented; a uniting theme was TV shows and recent movies.
@OldCatLady and giggling
@cranky1950 you are bound and determined to be murdered on my watch, aren’t you???
@mikibell
@cranky1950 and I bet the estrogen units in your house would rip your arm off and beat you with the bloody stump if you teased them like you are teasing @f00l!
@OldCatLady
I expected something kinda traditional and (to me) awful. Instead I overheard all sorts of technical talk about brief-writing and tax shelters and sophisticated lobbying schemes and somebody might bring in a contract. I think everyone there had been to grad school.
They were all more “professional” than “academic” or “sci/tech”.
@cranky1950, I heard not a word about sports, except for the stuff played by a some of the kids; and some of the attendees were into tennis, golf or marathons, and several of them (including the mom-to-be) are quite serious hunters.
You might have found this group to be a pretty tough crowd.
@mikibell
Not to worry. He’s cool, with his cute “giggle” asides.
Perhaps he hangs with people who like to giggle.
@mikibell No they just tend to grab my pay check and ignore me, oh and the silent treatment.
@f00l Nah especially if they’re engineers, nothing hotter than a woman who likes to tear down heavy equipment.
@cranky1950
These females might silently and coolly appraise you, extract your net worth legally, but without having an off-work connection or being personal about it, provide you with some sort abstruse legal or financial service, and then move on to the next guy who thinks that they’re “cute” and that they “giggle”.
Perhaps time to re-think your stereotypes?
@f00l Not to worry my net worth will cause most of them to laugh. Besides I can still drive at night, what more do I need.
@f00l The most fun shower I ever went to was a cosplay wedding/baby shower, with all sexes and species. There was filking.
/giphy filk
Getting back to cupcakes, I still love red velvet with a sweet cream cheese frosting, though many now say they are passe’. Or perhaps you could place a chocolate truffle inside the cupcake before baking (chocolate sea salte caramel) and frost with something complementary. For the other party you could make chocolate chip & coconut with graham cracker crust. Somewhere you also use sweetened condensed milk & some people top with walnuts. These have so many names… 7 layer bars, stir-me-nots, no bake chocolate bars, etc. They are easy, fast & so yummy! Good luck!
@bloondie2 my gram called them hello dolly’s … and yummy is right. I make them for Christmas presents and have convinced my in-laws they are so HARD to make… I didn’t think of those, thank you!
@mikibell you’re so funny! And, yes, I hadn’t given it much thought, but they are pretty much just a Christmas cookie. You never see them any other time of year. Won’t your in- laws be super impressed!! LOL!
@bloondie2 gram would send them to me when I was away at school… those and peanut butter cookies which were always good legal tender when bartering
@mikibell the kind with the Hershey kisses in the center?? Why not… 3 or 4 home made cookies made with love… worth a six pack I’d think!
complaints about not enough cupcakes drive me to share my favorite baking blog: http://cookiesandcups.com/category/cupcakes/
this lady has just released a cookbook, and her food is sooo yummy!!!
not quite a cupcake, but these are delic!
and I have been dying to try these, but we have to find out if I will die if I try them first…
I have made these, and they are scrumptious …
Die first?? You mean died & gone to heaven! Omg so talented!
@bloondie2 she is quite talented… and the food is all good… but I recently discovered that I might be allergic to almonds going to be tested (to make sure I am not crazy) first…
I’m sure you’re not crazy. Nut allergies can pop up from out of nowhere. They can be pretty serious too. Glad you’re getting tested
@bloondie2
@mikibell LOVE THIS!
@bloondie2 Sheldon is often quoted in our house…
@mikibell ours too! Bazinga!
