Yeah. I was kind of frustrated that I used my free trial of CBS all access already. I guess I’ll have to pay for a month once the show drops.
The book is great. The original show was ok, I guess. Left me wanting.
@RiotDemon
I actually really liked the show, but then again I did see it before reading the book.
The Stand was the longest single book I had ever read, at least until the Wheel of Time. I’m pretty sure some of those books were longer. If not, then the prologue of those books SEEMED longer.
@jst1ofknd the most annoying thing they did in my opinion was take two characters and smoosh them into one. It was stupid.
I’m not normally into reboots, but Stephen King’s stuff has some really bad versions out there so I’ll take the reboots.
@RiotDemon
I think Guinan will play Mother Abigail! I think she will be great!
@jst1ofknd you mean Whoopi?
@RiotDemon
She’ll always be Guinan to me.
@RiotDemon So Whoopi Goldberg is going to play Mother Abigail? That’s kind of a red flag to me.
@Citymars why? Because she’s not a million years old or something else?
Here’s the older version of The Stand. (6 hours)
M-O-O-N spells free.
@Barney I don’t know how this hasn’t been taken down yet. Usually the only movies that survive YouTube are altered really badly or whoever holds the copyright doesn’t care. I might try to watch this later. Thanks!
@Barney
M O O N that spells not getting work done today because I’m watching that.
@Barney @jst1ofknd I started watching it. They got rid of the copyrighted music to keep it from getting taken down. There is a different version that has the music but the white balance or something has been adjusted so the movie looks like shit.
@jst1ofknd @RiotDemon M-O-O-N that spells enjoy!
@Barney @jst1ofknd why is it that people during a pandemic love to watch other movies about pandemics? The comments got really heavy in March about watching during coronavirus.
I love how there was a news clip in the movie, a reporter is interviewing a guy wearing a mask and she asks him why he bothers. It’s so topical.
@RiotDemon
BECAUSE IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AND WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!
@Barney @jst1ofknd @RiotDemon Because just watch, and see, and think how much worse it could be and feel better about the suck you are currently in.
@Barney @jst1ofknd I totally didn’t just spend most of my day watching this.
@Barney @jst1ofknd @RiotDemon i’m totally not watching this right now. nor will i continue watching it later.
@Barney @jst1ofknd @RiotDemon
So I just spent my day doing nothing and watching that. Never herd of it before. (I’m 37) I’m more of a king movie person than I am his books, I prefer Koben and Patterson to read (I know different genre and all). Anyways I was not that impressed by the miniseries, I found it pretty boring for a king film. I’m sure the remake will be a lot better though. I know it was probably great if you read the book and it’s almost 30 years old so It’s out of date.
@Barney @RiotDemon
I love pandemic movies period but probably bc in some crazy way they can rationalize their fears like stocking up on toilet paper and all the stuff they really don’t need. Contagion the miniseries was probably one of the best I’ve seen.
@Star2236 I really like King’s books. On the other hand, I think that the movies made from his books, pretty much suck. So, it looks like you and I are the yin and yang of King books/movies.
However, I am looking forward to this new Stand version and have high hopes for it.
@Barney
I have one question about that miniseries, was that supposed to be scary at all when it premiered in 94?
@Barney @Star2236 I don’t find many of his books “scary”, per se. They are more psychological thrillers.
Someone once explained SK to as such: he delves DEEP inside the minds, motivations, origin stories of the books’ characters. You really, truly get to know them very well. Then he kills them.
The Stand is an all-time favorite book, and the mini-series did not mess it up too badly.
But I still just don’t get Ashman. He seems like he doesn’t fit the story, yet… he’s important.
@Barney @jst1ofknd @Star2236 I read the book and that miniseries is just ok to me. The graphics definitely did not hold up over the years. Some of the acting is not great.
I look at it like the original IT miniseries. It was created for regular TV so it was very restricted. As much as I loved Tim Curry as Pennywise, I was really excited for the rated R movies. I hope the new Stand series follows suit.
I’d imagine that it was scary when it came out just because the thought of something wiping out most of the population wasn’t as common place as today.
@Barney @G1 @Star2236 do you mean Trashman?
@Star2236
Scary? I don’t know. Maybe a little? But since I had already read the book and knew the plot, I wasn’t scared. I did enjoy it because it pretty much followed King’s book (as much as TV would allow in such a limited format). And it didn’t butcher it as so many of the King’s books had been when made into movies.
@G1 @RiotDemon @Star2236 It’s hard to believe that it’s been 26 years since it was first shown on TV. It really was a big deal back then and I think the ratings were pretty good. After all, what else was there to do then, but watch TV and go to an occasional movie.
Yes, it’s outdated in so many ways, but I did enjoy watching it again.
@G1 Trashman was my least favorite character (Tom Collins was my favorite). But, yeah, he was very important.
@Barney @G1 @Star2236 watching it again definitely got me even more excited for the reboot.
The guy who played Tom Cullen was great. I hope the guy who replaces him does him justice. Tom and Nick’s chemistry was great.
Nadine was a little, wooden? I guess. Harold… I remember hating him more in the book. Seemed even grosser.
Is Molly Ringwald considered a good actress? I felt like she fell kind of flat.
I watched some video afterwards about The Stand and apparently they tried to get Christopher Walken amongst others to play Flagg. He would of been great. Not to say this guy wasn’t good. The cgi close ups of the morphing were horrendous though.
@RiotDemon @Star2236 Harold was a real disappointment. I pictured him as an overweight, glasses wearing, pimply faced nerd. The guy they picked to play him, just didn’t do him justice.
I’m ready for the remake, but I’m still having trouble realizing that it’s been 26 years since I first watched this. She says, as she shakes her almost completely gray, shaggy hair, that desperately needs a haircut.
@Barney you might not like his replacement’s looks then.
/image Owen Teague
He was good in the IT reboot, so I am still hopeful.
94 sometimes feels like a lifetime ago, and other times it feels like it was yesterday. Funny how time works.
@RiotDemon Really? This guy? When I read the book, I pictured Harold as being a young Stephen King, although I don’t know if King was ever as chunky as my Harold. Don’t know why I did, I just did.
@Barney I think I’m kind of in the minority. When I read, I can picture the places, but the people, I have a hard time with sometimes. I would also make a terrible police witness. At work I have to mentally focus on people if I have to walk and grab something, otherwise I might not recognize them when I come back if there’s a bunch of other similarly aged people around. I’ll have to tell myself something like, blue shirt, black pants.
Owen was creepy enough in IT, so I’m guessing that’s why he was cast. He might not look proper, but I’m hoping the creep factor comes through.
@Barney as for SK.

@RiotDemon The last Stephen King picture is MY Harold!
@Barney @RiotDemon @Star2236 Yes. M-O-O-N. That spells Trashman.
@Barney @RiotDemon
If Christopher Walken would have been flag it would have made that miniseries. Yes Molly Ringwald is an iconic 90’s actress known for certain film but her acting in that was horrible. Not having read the book (just reminding you again) it was hard to tell what point trash man had in the miniseries. Tom was great, never would have guessed that guy is the voice of sponge bob the cartoon. I didn’t really care for Nadine’s acting, l thought it was very flat. I definitely will watch the remake of it. I just hope the remake flows a little faster, I found this one to be a little boring at times but I know that’s bc of it being 26 years old.
@Barney @Star2236 I mean,
SPOILERS!!!
.
.
.
Trashman brought the nuke that basically ended it all.
@Barney @RiotDemon
Yes I understand that but it seems like they they shortened his purpose.
@Barney @Star2236 ahh, got it. It’s been a long time since I read the book, but the book was really long and I know he was in it for a good part of it. But I don’t remember it being much different than he was absolutely nuts.
@RiotDemon Do you have face blindness? Chuck Close, the painter who did incredibly photo-realistic portraits, explained that that was why he painted that way, with zillions of little pixels, because he kind of had to break the image down to see it.
@Kyeh no. I can recognize people. It’s just the one offs I have a hard time with. Apparently people with face blindness sometimes don’t even recognize their own faces.
@Kyeh @RiotDemon
There’s a person I’ve known for years. She has something like this.
When someone meets up with her, they have to tell her what’s they’re wearing, or some other identifying cue, in advance. So that she can recognize them.
This even applies to her family I think?
Once someone is with her, she can recognize them for the duration of the immediate encounter?
Then next time everything has to start all over I think?
I’m not sure exactly how it works or doesn’t work for her, or how common her situation is. It’s a bit fascinating to me tho.
@f00l @RiotDemon Wow. Yeah, that must make life difficult. I’m also fascinated by perception disorders or the opposite - I guess there are also people who can recognize strangers after seeing them only once, even after time has passed and with different hairstyles, etc.
@Star2236
More precisely, he is the voice of Patrick Star.
I was worried that Molly Ringwald was going to ruin the miniseries, so I was pleasantly surprised. I guess it’s a matter of perspective and expectations.
Laws, yes! I’m ready. M-O-O-N That spells I’m ready.
As the article pointed out, movies like “Contagion”, “Outbreak”, and “28 Days Later” have been immensely popular on streaming services since “stay at home” started.
My psyche just isn’t built for that. The last thing I am interested in watching (right now) is a mini-series centralized around a pandemic. I don’t think I would be “bothered” per se, but I just wouldn’t find it entertaining.
@DrWorm
I would for a couple of different reasons.
Childhood memories of the previous miniseries and book
Knowledge that what we have now is no where near as bad as the book.
The plague just starts off the story, the bulk of it is what happens in the aftermath.
@DrWorm @jst1ofknd
You mean the part that we haven’t experienced yet?
@DrWorm @macromeh
Yes. Exactly…
@DrWorm @jst1ofknd @macromeh Just now a solid background in dystopian and postapocalyptic fiction is very useful. Fantasy fans are in their element.
I am a big fan of the book (I’ve read it several times) and I thought the TV miniseries was pretty good. Gary Sinise as Stu was great. And Bill Faggerbake as Tom Cullen was about perfect.
Why do we need a reboot, again?
@macromeh
Stephen Kind adaptations are automatic money makers.
Someone is Hollywood wants to make $. Gosh. : )
/giphy ‘Nuff said.
@macromeh because Alexander Skarsgård is hot?
/image Alexander Skarsgård
@macromeh I was not pleased by Parker Lewis’s performance of Harold Emery Lauder. I’m hopeful for a better one this time.
@macromeh @Nate311 Owen Teague is doing that part in the reboot. He was also in the IT reboot as Patrick Hockstetter.
@Nate311 but Parker Lewis can’t lose!
@macromeh @RiotDemon
I don’t know who Alexander Skarsgård is. He just doesn’t look like an evil demon sorcerer type person to me.
@jst1ofknd @macromeh oh boy. He’s the son of

Brother of

Brother of

He was in True Blood as

He also played

@djslack I had no idea what you meant that he couldn’t lose.
For everyone else, it’s the name of a TV show.
@RiotDemon yeah, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose was a TV show in the 90s. The actor playing Parker Lewis was also in The Stand. Cormac something or other. I don’t think it was a very long lived show.
I’m sure I remember it wrong but I think I remember thinking it was going to be like Ferris Bueller has a sitcom but being let down by it not being like that.
@djslack Parker Lewis Can’t Lose was a terrible show. I watched it every week.
@djslack @RiotDemon Corin Nemec - I loved that stupid show. Guess he lost when it was canceled.
@jst1ofknd @macromeh @RiotDemon
He was in Dragon Tattoo right?
If that’s him, if I recall correctly, he was terrific,
Hmmm
Let’s see what comes up.
/youtube dragon tattoo stellan Skarsgård
@f00l @jst1ofknd @macromeh @RiotDemon
And brother Bill Skarsgård played Pennywise in IT.
@f00l @jst1ofknd @macromeh Stellan was also in Thor/avengers.
@f00l @jst1ofknd @Kyeh @macromeh that family is just oozing talent and hotties.
@f00l @jst1ofknd @Kyeh @macromeh Gustav was Floki in Vikings.

And in Westworld
/image Westworld Gustav
@f00l @jst1ofknd @macromeh @RiotDemon Yeah, truly! (Hotties and talent)
@djslack @Nate311 The best line from Parker Lewis Cant Lose:
“Hey, Kub, settle a bet. Is ignorance bliss”
Kubiac: “I don’t know. I just want to be happy”
@jst1ofknd @Kyeh @macromeh @RiotDemon
That family seems to have a gift for being attractive badasses.
/giphy Eric northman
@f00l @jst1ofknd @macromeh @RiotDemon Well said. They do tend to play scary guys!
@f00l @jst1ofknd @Kyeh @macromeh I’m currently watching Hemlock Grove with Bill. The show is… Not great. It’s fun to watch Bill though. Sometimes his swedish accent peeks through.
@f00l @jst1ofknd @macromeh @RiotDemon Huh, yeah, the reviews are pretty scathing. It has kind of cool music, from the little clips I heard. I like his cat…
woah! The Stand is one of my all time favorite books. I love this!
My 17 year old is now reading my old copy of The Stand.
