@narfcake For years, political discussion was the bane of my Thanksgivings. In the last few years, that has been replaced by a houseful of people in absolute silence, fixated on their phones.
I’m not trying to be funny when I say I don’t know what is worse.
I’m guessing I’ll probably work, but I don’t have my schedule yet so who knows. My brother will be home for a few days. Then a week later we’ll be going down to my sister’s house for my nephew’s birthday party.
@krobb1290 Just one of many reasons I don’t miss retail. Most holidays I had no problems working (because holiday pay), even Xmas, but Thanksgiving is one I always want off.
@krobb1290 Been there, done that, at this time of year. You have my sympathy. When I worked retail everyone would bring in leftovers on Black Friday and it would be like second thanksgiving, tho no one ate at the same time.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, because it’s the one time a year I get to see my whole family. The last few years, it has been in Dallas, and we spend a whole week.
So… the girls are grown and out; Mum is in assisted living so who cares if they all come for the day to gnaw on the bones of a large ornithopter. So long as they all go home after.
We get to see the little grandkids. No political talk, no religious talk because we don’t want to fight. And the guys get together and talk engineering, not sports.
@Goofmont Same. No family, no food, just business as usual. Tho some thanksgivings I do get some kind of frozen TV dinner with turkey so I least have turkey on thanksgiving.
My family does the whole holidays thing all at Thanksgiving. We get together from all across the country, eat delicious food, catch up, try desperately NOT to talk about politics, and then give Christmas presents and play some games. It is honestly pretty good.
Today marks 5 months since the auto accident my boyfriend and I were in. He was in a coma at first and then has been trying to recover from a serious brain injury. He can’t speak yet, can’t move most of his body on his own yet, and is still being fed through a tube so it’s kind of hard to enjoy turkey and stuffing when the man I love doesn’t get to enjoy it with me.
@drinkaffeine I understand your feeling that way, but do you think he’d want you to miss out on the holiday because of him? It won’t make him any better if you miss out on joy because he’s suffering. Your suffering won’t make anything better. You deserve joy, he’d want you to find happiness. And I’m so sorry that this happened.
@Gypsigirl213 Oh wow. That definitely changes my mindset… You’re right, he would. I don’t usually post on this website so I wasn’t expecting a response but you seriously encouraged me, thank you. That’s a better way to look at it.
@moonhat Yes he’s come a very long way! Doctors said he might not live, then said there was a 90% chance he would never wake up from his coma, and recently he’s been able to open his mouth on his own and he can smile a little which has become my favorite sight in the world when I visit him I’m very thankful he’s making progress and I believe he will make a full recovery.
@drinkaffeine I am so honored to have been able to help you shift your perspective so that you can move out of misery and into joy! Happy Thanksgiving!
yes! nothing beats having a feast for your birthday every year. (last year it was on thanksgiving, this year it’s about a week before but thanksgiving is still always when i celebrate with family. it is also my dad’s bday celebration as well, who happens to be one of my favorite people.) the only thing that would improve it is if i could teleport. still not a good traveler but i get through it to see family.
Nope, I would prefer my days off, to be days off, but it seems like other folks see this as a “oh, you aren’t busy?” time. Sis wants family over for dinner, and guess who is responsible for getting everything ready. And, no, she’s disabled, so it falls on me.
Mixed feelings. My wife and I host an extended family gathering, so there is some stress about getting everything ready. But the family is great and everyone gets along and is happy to be there, so it always seems to turn out fine.
It will be nice to have a week with my husband home from work, and we usually go to Friendsgiving, since we don’t have any family out here, but I think I want to do my own roast turkey meal as well because I love leftovers.
Simple: people I love plus food I love.
All is well so long as
NO POLITICS!
@narfcake amen
@narfcake For years, political discussion was the bane of my Thanksgivings. In the last few years, that has been replaced by a houseful of people in absolute silence, fixated on their phones.
I’m not trying to be funny when I say I don’t know what is worse.
@narfcake But if you do make peachmint cobbler, you make your Christmas gift list much shorter.
Moved to Colorado where family relocated last year, so now we don’t have to travel!
It was fine two weeks ago, in Canada.
My oldest is coming home for Thanksgiving this year. Yay!
Yes because it’s one of the two days in the year I am guaranteed not to have to work.
Except for cooking. I guess that’s kind of work.
Food. Football. Pies. Beer.
We will do what we’ve done every year for the last few years, gather the family and tell the story of TwistedLisa and the Thanksgiving of 2014.
@Ignorant ok… tell us more!
@bayportbob @Ignorant I agree with BPBob; tell us all about TLisa!
@Ignorant Wanna hear the story too! Three requests and now you’re obliged.
@Ignorant Oh, goody! This is my favorite story Uncle Ig. Can I come to dinner?
Edit: Don’t forget the part about Good Lisa.
@Barney @Ignorant That was my introduction to Meh! This salad container looks nice, WTF is happening in the forum?
You’re always welcome @Barney
Good Lisa is a major part of the story and still a contributing mehmber, I won’t forget
@sammydog01 hahahaha!
@Ignorant Aww… Thanks!
@lisaviolet ^^^^^^^
@Barney Thanks for the notification, I would have missed this.
@Ignorant She was some piece of work, wasn’t she? Law degree and everything.
Every day is Thanksgiving
I was raised by badgers, so no. Holidays are rarely something I look forward to.
I’ve been quietly agitating for lunch at Baker’s Square and a movie, preferably Knives Out or Last Christmas, and the outlook is good.
I just found out I’m cooking again…
I’m guessing I’ll probably work, but I don’t have my schedule yet so who knows. My brother will be home for a few days. Then a week later we’ll be going down to my sister’s house for my nephew’s birthday party.
The family political fights about Trump
Chance to get out of town…
Nope because I work in retail.
@krobb1290 Just one of many reasons I don’t miss retail. Most holidays I had no problems working (because holiday pay), even Xmas, but Thanksgiving is one I always want off.

way too much family time with relatives in the same room with me. nuff said.
So… the girls are grown and out; Mum is in assisted living so who cares if they all come for the day to gnaw on the bones of a large ornithopter. So long as they all go home after.
/giphy turkey
Time off
The ceremonial frying of the turkeys…
And then the eating.
Ugh. The disruption and chaos brought on by holidays. Pass.
Delicious food, seeing friends (and family…), and a little extra sleep!
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. Family, food, and no political arguments because we all agree.
Nope.
First Thanksgiving without my mother-in-law, who passed away on the 3rd, and who I liked better than I liked my own mother.
@Foobarski sorry to hear. holidays are always extra hard after the loss of a loved one. hang in there.
We get to see the little grandkids. No political talk, no religious talk because we don’t want to fight. And the guys get together and talk engineering, not sports.
Just another day, no fanfare, no special meal, no family and no shopping.
Not the holiday itself, but we’re taking the whole week off to visit my sisters-in-law, who are great and who we only see about once a year.
Just another Thursday, except my regular Thursday lunch group won’t meet…
2 days off and then the weekend.
I get to make my girlfriend’s extended family uncomfortable for my own entertainment

@drinkaffeine oh gosh, I’m so sorry! It does sound like he’s slowly getting better though! That is excellent.
@drinkaffeine I understand your feeling that way, but do you think he’d want you to miss out on the holiday because of him? It won’t make him any better if you miss out on joy because he’s suffering. Yep. Tasty food and well-behaved relatives.
Mixed feelings. My wife and I host an extended family gathering, so there is some stress about getting everything ready. But the family is great and everyone gets along and is happy to be there, so it always seems to turn out fine.
I usually look forward to it, but we may have to move that weekend, so that’s overshadowing everything.
Yeah for shopping.
I’m looking forward to not going to work.
It will be nice to have a week with my husband home from work, and we usually go to Friendsgiving, since we don’t have any family out here, but I think I want to do my own roast turkey meal as well because I love leftovers.
Looking forward for the time off but not the cooking.
