Look Smart Trivia: The Coen Brothers
4I may not love every Coen Brothers movie, but I always make a point of seeing them all. If there’s a body of cinematic work in our lifetimes that matches their prolific range and brilliance, don’t tell me, because I won’t have time to watch it. Here are shots from five of my favourites. Be the first to identify them all and you’ll win a $5 Meh coupon. Insert sign-off catchphrase here!
OK, things got a bit weird in yesterday’s Mystery Theme game. First @lehigh posted the answers, nailing the hidden state capital theme, but wasn’t eligible to win. Then @sammydog01 re-posted the answers with credit to @Barney and some cockamamie story about a troubled phone. So @Barney re-re-posted the answers but requested that we give the $5 Meh coupon to @sammydog01 since @Barney herself doesn’t buy stuff from Meh. So here’s what we’re doing: @sammydog01 gets the coupon but should use it to buy @Barney something. Oh, right, the answers:
- Charleston (the dance)
- Montgomery (Burns)
- Dover (as in the white cliffs of)
- Salem (cigarettes)
- Jackson (Reggie)
plus 6. Phoenix (posted by @sammydog01)

See that @Barney? Next $5 or under item is yours. Whatever it is. Bwahaha! (I hope it’s a toy.)
Thanks @JasonToon.
@sammydog01 I hope it’s an I.R.K.
@Barney I’m pretty sure I couldn’t get the code filled in time. How about a nice rubber phone stand?
@sammydog01 Excuses, Excuses. So I looked back at my $5 regrettable purchases (and most of them were regrettable), and it’s kind of scary what has been offered for $5 or less. Now I won’t sleep.
Btw I got a rubber phone stand in my MorningSave purchase. I tossed it into my nightstand with my unused phone.
@Barney Too bad they sold out those nifty little purses that charge your phone. You could keep your phone from getting scratched up in your nightstand.
@sammydog01 Yeah, those were another nightmare purchase that I didn’t buy.
Just to help others: #1 is No Country for Old Men and #4 is Oh Brother Where Art Thou.
I went through the list of Coeh brothers movies. I’ve seen Raising Arizona, Fargo, and Bad Santa. I guess I’m not much of a fan either.
@sammydog01 Oh wait, I took my daughter to see Suburbicon. She got extra credit in English for seeing it. We had popcorn.
I don’t recognize #2, but there is a motif with a mystery girl on the beach in Barton Fink
Almost certain #5 is wrong, made the guess strictly on the fact that the time period looks about right, but you can say that for quite a few of their films.
@DrWorm Yeah, I thought about A Serious Man for #5, but it didn’t seem likely to be on someone’s favorites list (IMHO, given the list to choose from).
@DrWorm On #5, I also thought it was Serious Man. But Alex Karpovsky (the male actor at the table) is not in that movie, but is in Inside Llewyn Davis, according to IMDB
Not at all sure about #2 though it seems period-appropriate. Was going to say that it’s the “one everyone forgets about,” but there are actually a bunch of those – The Hudsucker Proxy, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers …
Also it seems @JasonToon appropriate somehow. I bet Big Lebowski would be on this list but Toon doesn’t want to be associated with its Johnny-come-lately fanbase.
@skemmehs It would just be too easy. I doubt there’s a frame left from that movie that wouldn’t pop up in a Google Image Search.
@skemmehs I’ve been looking at rugs in images. No luck so far.
Looks like the prize is won already so I won’t bother, but +1 for the Coen brothers movies.
#3:
Counselor:
Why do you say you feel “trapped” in a man’s body.
Convict:
Well, sometimes I get them menstrual cramps real hard.
LOL
