Look Smart Trivia: Battlefield Monuments
6Decades or centuries after the weapons fall silent, a battlefield looks just like any other field. So the survivors erect monuments to the madness and sacrifice that took place there, to keep us from forgetting about it. Here are current-day monuments at the sites of five famous battles from history. Be the first to name them all and you’ll win a $5 Meh coupon. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
Look out, Howard Cosell. @hih934 was first across the finish line in yesterday’s Name That Sport video quiz, and captured the prize of a $5 Meh coupon:
- Sepak Takraw
- Calcio Fiorentino (or Calcio Storico, or Florentine football)
- Motoball
- Mongolian Wrestling (or Bokh)
- Pickleball

No clue what/where any of these are, but I gotta say #4 really looks f**king cool! Like, “Come At Me Statue of Liberty! I dare you!!”
Man, 3 and 5 are rough. Not much to work with there. I’m on the case.
@steelopus zoom on 3
@speediedelivery Yeah I finally got it! But 5 is borderline impossible unless you’ve actually been to that site before.
Computer, enhance.
…
Computer? Enhance!
Always works on TV and in the movies.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@steelopus #5 required some advanced googling with a bunch of random descriptive words.
@steelopus That was a monumental search.
Leonidas Monument
Soldier’s National Monument (Gettysburg National Cemetery)
Verdun Memorial
The Motherland Calls statue (Mamayev Kurgan, Stalingrad Battlefield Memorial Park)
The Helles Memorial
@JasonToon tired of doing these yet? Thanks for the fun. Sorry not a lot of participation. Hope you do more of this stuff in the future. Might help participation if you announce in advance when the clues will be posted. Maybe release 1 clue every 10 minutes and the winner has to be the first to post all 5 answers in a single post. There will still be a mad dash to post after the last clue is revealed, but at least that lets people join a bit late and still have a fighting chance. More discussion would likely occur between clues as well.
@medz Thanks, glad you’re liking it. Yeah, I’m thinking about ways to make it more fun and encourage more players. Your idea of staggered clues is intriguing…
@JasonToon @medz - Alternately, you could change the rules so that everyone entering would have to post a comment, then whisper their answers to Jason. That way no one would know if the correct answers have been submitted until the reveal.
Not sure if this would spark more conversation, but it may.

@hih934 I like it. Took me a second to master the controls, but it’s pretty awesom.
This is a monument to Confederate soldiers in our local cemetary. I think it’s cool.
And I just noticed I can’t spell cemetery.
I wish I had a monument to remind me of today’s sign-off catchgif.
