@cranky1950 that reminds me of my favorite Jalapeño chips only available in the midwest unfortunately. It's way too easy to eat the whole bag in one sitting.
@mehjohnson It's weird when you're looking through the grocery aisle thinking I know something I used to buy was right about here, What was it... Just random cravings... I've gotten over the whole Arby's Beef and cheddar... (Sadly Vermont does not have Arby's Also the nearest Arby's have closed also.. I found one in Albany.
@carl669 Yes, in the sense that there are grid- and rod-shaped pieces of dry crunchy stuff coated in salt inside the bag. No, in the sense that doodads actually had a strong flavor.
@ChadP That was the first thing to come to my mind when I read the thread title. I remember them with a plain shell and a light green filing. 5am gas station snack to go fishing with my dad as a kid, think that might have been the only reason I got up:)
@chellemonkey The can was the bulk size for the moms who kept it on tap at the house. Look at the tastefully-slanted use of Helvetica on the box. It's so 1985!
@BillLehecka the hot stays hot, the cool stays cool! Tasted pretty good... and then they brought it back a few years later as the Big N' Tasty but without the fancy hot/cold package.
@BillLehecka I used to make my parents eat these so i could make airplanes out of the Styrofoam containers. I had a book with patterns to cut out of all the McStyrofoam boxes to make different planes. They were pretty awesome as a kid.
@sohmageek Here is the bottle I remember. We would beg our bus driver to stop at every gas station on the way to summer camp so we could stock up on this stuff. We couldn't find it in Kansas, had to stock up after we crossed the border to Colorado. Damn Colorado, they were so lucky!
@kanzatonian I remember the old style bottle also... I hear that there may be a "retro" soda shop making it now in that kind of bottle... but I'm pretty sure the original company no longer makes it or went bankrupt...
@kanzatonian We had a corner grocery right by the elementary school. Getting a dollar back in the late 70s and early 80s meant heading to their wall of candy. The most expensive thing they had were these bad boys at .25.
@Bingo Ooh, I wonder if they'd be just as good as they used to be, or if they'd be little fruit shaped disappointments. Oh hell, it's sugar, I'm pretty sure I'd love em.
@Bingo That is a petition to restore them page... note the "This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Enter your email to petition for it to come back."
Actual cinnamon (plain white sugar and cinnamon, mixed by sight and not measure) toast on regular gluteny bread. When I was a teenager I could literally eat a whole loaf of that stuff at a time; which is to say, sometimes I did.
The bread should be toasted to a light golden brown, never burnt. The trick was to layer the cinnamon sugar on the still-warm and freshly-buttered toast, using two plates so that after the first covering you could gently shake off the excess and recoat using what was left on the first plate onto the toast and second plate, and so on (almost kinda like you separate an egg yolk from its white, going back and forth). If you just sprinkled the cinnamon sugar on the toast without going over the edges the toast wasn't nearly cinnamon-sugary enough.
Good cinnamon toast is all about excess. And butter. Like what @JonT was saying about fancy restaurants in that other thread.
And then I'd eat the crust first, so what was left was basically a congealed mass of cinnamon sugar and butter adhered to bread. Gawd, the memory of that stuff is strong.
I love cinnamon. After I read Dune, I mythologized it.
(I realize that y'all can still have this snack. But it's "long lost to me. And it's one of the most powerful food memories from my youth.)
BTW, this is almost as thick as I made it. Look at some of the other images from a google search and they appear to be lightly dusted. Bah.
@joelmw You my friend are the Shakespeare of cinnamon toast. I must make some and it will be glorious! Eating the crust first leaving the delicious center. You are the MASTER!
@kanzatonian@jaremelz@slamm I have to admit, I'm always a little surprised when anything I say actually connects with people. It makes me happy that I'm not alone in my love for one of life's simple pleasures. :-)
@joelmw Ever since you posted this, I've been putting off going to the store to get bread. I know that once I do, I'm going to just want to have cinnamon toast for dinner and that's not going to go over well with the family to which I've promised baked chicken alfredo.
@kanzatonian Nice song and nice visual effect. I know them only a little, but my wife and I were part of this:
There were no cameras in the Dallas theaters, as far as I know, so I'm pretty sure we're not in the video, but damnit, we were part of the event. It probably says way too much about me that I have a serious mancrush on Ira Glass and I think I've seen all of This American Life's simulcasts. The second one was the wife's and my first synchronous date (we lived in different states); we'd seen a movie "together," but the timing was a little off (and, yes, she tried to text me during the movie, but I told her I have a strict rule against that, consistent with Ira articulates in the intro above).
So even though I don't know them much, OK GO seems to have a similar vibe to TMBG, which is cool in a dorky sort of way.
@joelmw That is still around in my house, too. I like to pre-mix the cinn/sugar blend into softened butter first, like you would with garlic butter. Then shmear up to and even over the edge, like you would with cheese - to melt crispies onto the pan. Vanilla and touch of salt takes it over the top, but I'm usually too lazy for that.
@SSteve I totally remember that. That's awesome. And I hate you. ;-) I was hoping there'd be at least one TAL fan here. I tell people who are all into that hot Serial podcast (like it's something brand new), "yeah, I liked that when it was dorkier and we called it This American Life." It is kinda new. And good. But it's basically just a serialized version of TAL, and with less emphasis on the theme and less variety and without the brilliant shouts out to Torey Malatia.
@joelmw Cinnamon sugar toast is too much effort. Replace the toast with bread, and replace the cinnamon with nothing. Sometimes we'd get crazy and put xmas cookie sprinkles on it instead of just plain sugar.
@NigelF I'm pretty damn lazy. Now you've embarrassed me with the thought that I might actual not be lazy enough. Guess that's part of what makes me mediocre. In my defense, I tend to expend a great deal of effort on things that some would argue are meaningless--all the while avoiding doing anything of significance. So, yaknow, I'm maybe not as lazy as I could be, but I'm pretty fucking ineffective.
I'll leave out any spokesperson reference. But I loved these. The thin layer of ice on the outside, and once you got through that, nothing but smooth and creamy goodness.
@pitamuffin Yes! I had a craving for these a few months ago. I didn't realize they didn't make them anymore until I tried to find them in the ice cream isle.
@pitamuffin You just described perfectly why I loved these so much! Texture is an attraction for me and that thin ice and creamy center...oh yeah these were def. my favorite!
@editorkid They still make those fruit pies. Franz bought them out. Had one for a morning snack today....unless you specifically mean chocolate. I thought I saw them but I usually just buy cherry.
@CowboyDann Chocolate, they gotta be chocolate. Local Save A Lot's sells some off the wall brand for a buck each. They are a mass of choclate pudding wrapped in a sugar glazed crust. So good!
@Teripie Agreed. Chocolate or GTFO. Local store had an off-brand for like $0.25 per pie because they were past their fresh date. You better believe I stocked-up!
@editorkid Oh yeah, those Space Food Sticks. Definitely went through a phase of those. I'm sure I'd think they're disgusting if I tasted one today, I kind of thought so as a kid, but that didn't deter me. And +1 to that nice pic of good, old Tang that's just below this. All those space-inspired foods of the 60s. Sigh.
@Teripie@CowboyDann@medz Absolutely, all about the chocolate. The fruit pies are for health food addicts. And all y'all are cool. I really didn't expect anyone to know these or like 'em enough to remember them.
@editorkid well shucks, the fruit pies are just as bad as the chocolate ones. I'll check to see if they carry chocolate and send a few out if anyone wants them.
@editorkid and @CowboyDann sometimes I like to take a small bite of the chocolate pie then insert my tongue to scoop out some chocolate filling without disturbing the tasty shell. I don't know why, but it's great. It's wonderful finally finding folks with this shared interest that I can open up to about these things.
@mfladd Mmmm try it on vanilla ice cream or custard. To really go overboard take tang and soft-serve vanilla and swirl them together, then squirt some quality chocolate topping on it.... ahhhhh
Count Chocula used to be so good! It tastes nothing like it used to. They probably removed the dangerous additives and it lost it's soul in the process.
@JonT Yep. I remember several years back I bought a whole case from Amazon when they had not quite stopped making them bit pretty close. It was twelve boxes for about $25? They lasted less than a week. :(
It was like a combo Birch beer and Cola... It's truly tied for my favorite soda, and I think this one would win cause I can't get it now. Yes it was shown on the office... I was kind of pissed that in one of the final episodes someone was drinking on it's a NEPA regional flavor.
@sohmageek Damn, I love birch beer and would have loved to try this. I bought a bottle of birch syrup for my Sodastream, but haven't ever gotten it to taste right.
@editorkid let me know if you do get it to taste right. Maybe add a touch of cola flavoring? I have a love hate relationship with my sodastream. Like I love Bawls Guarana. So I got Guarana syrup. Can't get it to taste remotely good.
@Lotsofgoats Guess what- I recently saw little hugs at a birthday party for a diabetic kid, and I asked the mom. Hugs look the same, but they are now sugar -free. I was shocked.
Sadly. I can no longer score a Mr. Pibb or Pibb Xtra at the local Sam's Club or movie theater. Those were the last two place left in my neck of the woods.
@JonT@jimmyd103 I've seen plenty of it around the DFW metroplex. Indeed, I ate at the Chipotle in downtown Dallas and had a little Pibb Xtra as a sort of liquid dessert after I'd polished off my salad. I almost took a picture, but it's such a hassle for me to get an image up (because of everything that's blocked at work), it hardly seemed worth it. I think it's way better than Dr Pepper (I mean that, but I also like the fact that it would be anathema to some Texans).
@joelmw@jont Not certain why it is prevelent in the South and a dessert up here? Regardless its way better than Dr. Pepper! Speaking of Dr. P.... i used to be able to buy a caffeine free version at the local Kroger but have not been able to find that one either.
The Works potato chips. Not the Lays loaded potato but the Gibble's ones in the purple bag. They were not available long in mid 80's but still my favorite.
There is a small local store that carries a section of retro candy that is fun to shop.
@speediedelivery I haven't tried them and it probably isn't a good comparison, but I've heard these South African spiced chips from Trader Joes are amazing…
@JonT The Works was all the chip flavors on at the same time. It was strong tasting and really unique. They were not sold long and I remember searching in stores everywhere for them. The one pound bag was a nice "serving" size.
The Trader Joes sound good but closest place is two hours away. Next road trip I will have to stop. I am always looking for new brands and flavors of chips to try when I go somewhere.
@JonT I need to find and try those Spicy Thai ones. One of my favorite flavors is Walker's Sensations Thai Sweet Chili (Walker's is Lay's in the UK). They brought it here for a little while in a very similar flavor under the Lay's Sensations label, but the whole Sensations line was dropped after a relatively short period. I was still in college and asked a Lay's manager about it at a job fair, and he said while the various potato Sensations flavors were wildly successful, the corn flavors were not as successful and at the same time Sun Chips were starting to surge in popularity and used the same production line as the corn chip flavors. Since they wanted to ramp up production on the Sun Chips, they axed the whole Sensations lineup.
@JonT I am curious about the Beer and Chedder ones, do they have a beer taste? My current favorite is Utz Kettle Maui BBQ with close runners up the Kettle Salt and Malt Vinegar and Kettle Dark Russet
@speediedelivery I haven't had them in a while but from what I remember they had a mostly cheesy with more subtle beer taste but it was definitely a unique flavor.
I always loved these. They still exist in stores that I have never seen, like Farm and Fleet. My relatives that live out in the country sometimes supply me with a bag.
I can't find a picture, but I miss Keebler's Pitter Patter cookies from when I was little. I didn't actually like them as much as Nutter Butter at the time, but now as I'm not just all about max sugar I wish I could have some. They brought them back in the last year or two, but they're a little different. I also miss Opera Creme cookies. They had a lemon filling.
Another Keebler snack, I really liked O'Boisies Sour Cream and Onion flavor. The Sour Cream and Onion chips at Schlotzsky's are pretty similar in flavor.
Other chips I miss are Krunchers. According to their store locator, they're still in my area, but I haven't seen them at the listed stores in years now. I liked the Sour Cream and Onion and Kosher Dill flavors in particularl (curiously the Sour Cream and Onion flavor made me want to have a Kosher Dill pickle while eating them).
Weed.
@ACraigL In my day it was pot. I miss pot.
@ACraigL @Teripie y'all know that still exists, right?
@JonT You may blow their minds if you tell them it's legal in some parts of the country.
@JonT But, you know, it's not as good as it used to be. Hey, kid! Get off my lawn! Oh, what? You're my new dealer? Come right in.
Blackstone potato chips with the pustules of grease in them. Jay's were ok too.
@cranky1950 that reminds me of my favorite Jalapeño chips only available in the midwest unfortunately. It's way too easy to eat the whole bag in one sitting.
I miss them. I was just thinking of them a few years ago and wrote the company. They were my favorite snack as a teen...
@sohmageek OHHH MAN!!!! I TOTALLY forgot these existed! I used to freaking LOVE those things. Now I'm sad and miss them too.
@JonT here is something you may get stuck in your head.
@sohmageek That's awesome!
@sohmageek I miss both planters products... these P.B. Crisps and those delicious cheez balls... come on planters, make a retro re-run of these both!
@sohmageek I forgot them too. Those things were the best.
I found one in Albany.
doodads snack mix. They didn't taste like Chex Mix at all.
If you turn the box upside down, you could eat "spap oop".
@lumpthar Yes! I totally miss Doodads!! I loved that shit.
@Bingo can't you just buy these in the form of Chex Mix now?
@carl669 Yes, in the sense that there are grid- and rod-shaped pieces of dry crunchy stuff coated in salt inside the bag.
No, in the sense that doodads actually had a strong flavor.
I miss them.
@carl669
@lumpthar @Bingo I blame @carl669 for your pain.
@ChadP Those are kind of terrifying looking...kids like weird stuff....
@ChadP That's a real thing???? Ewwww.....
@Teripie Yes. Completely real promotion for TMNT II.
@ChadP Puddin' Power! I remember these. I was sad that I didn't really like them (compared to chocolate pies), but I ate them anyway.
@ChadP Why?
@ChadP That was the first thing to come to my mind when I read the thread title. I remember them with a plain shell and a light green filing. 5am gas station snack to go fishing with my dad as a kid, think that might have been the only reason I got up:)
@chellemonkey you think that is bad.. how about PURPLE ketchup?
@thismyusername @Barney loves purple.
@ChadP Every time I come back to this page and scroll down these things scare the hell out of me!
@joelmw @thismyusername I love purple.
@ChadP I never knew it came in a can. I did enjoy these in individual boxes though.
@chellemonkey The can was the bulk size for the moms who kept it on tap at the house.
Look at the tastefully-slanted use of Helvetica on the box. It's so 1985!
@chellemonkey I used to go through this stuff fast. my mom would occasionally spring for the giant can. it would be gone in an afternoon.
@ChadP I see you have a fondness for algae-green snacks.
@ChadP damn, I literally just posted about ecto cooler after seeing the ninja turtle pies WHICH WERE DELICIOUS BY THE WAY
gotta eat your greens
Now I'm almost sad about my childhood - I don't recognise any of these things so far.
@emilyap Except the cheese puffs, and dang, those are nasty.
Yup. I loved fast food but wanted healthy the salad shakers were awesome. It got the perfect amount of dressing all the way through the salad.
@sohmageek Those things were both brilliant and ridiculous.
Greatest snack food EVER.
@BillLehecka I miss those!
While not a snack food, per se, I'm making an exception.
@BillLehecka you can tell that Jason Alexander is pre Seinfeld.
@BillLehecka The internet provides amazing treasures.
@BillLehecka the hot stays hot, the cool stays cool! Tasted pretty good... and then they brought it back a few years later as the Big N' Tasty but without the fancy hot/cold package.
@BillLehecka Nothing says "kill the Ozone layer" like a burger that requires two pieces of styrofoam.
@BillLehecka I used to make my parents eat these so i could make airplanes out of the Styrofoam containers. I had a book with patterns to cut out of all the McStyrofoam boxes to make different planes. They were pretty awesome as a kid.
Strawberries that taste like strawberries.
Another beauty pulled before its time.
@sohmageek 450mg of caffine per can
@jaremelz The crack of my childhood.
@jaremelz These were my sisters addiction. I bet her mind would explode if I remind her of these.
@kanzatonian We had a corner grocery right by the elementary school. Getting a dollar back in the late 70s and early 80s meant heading to their wall of candy. The most expensive thing they had were these bad boys at .25.
@jaremelz These things? http://www.candywarehouse.com/products/candy-powder-filled-plastic-fruits-medley-72-piece-bag/
@jaremelz What? I thought I saw these at Family Dollar not too long ago
These tiny cookies were like crack:
@lumpthar I missed out!

@joelmw You my friend are the Shakespeare of cinnamon toast. I must make some and it will be glorious! Eating the crust first leaving the delicious center. You are the MASTER!
@joelmw My mom used to make me the exact same thing, and I'm buying a toaster oven soon precisely so I can make this.
@kanzatonian @jaremelz @slamm I have to admit, I'm always a little surprised when anything I say actually connects with people. It makes me happy that I'm not alone in my love for one of life's simple pleasures. :-)
@joelmw You are not alone!
@joelmw speaking of toast ...

Fuck, I'm old.
@editorkid Those candy cigarettes were the best. Blowing out that little puff!
@editorkid They still make those fruit pies. Franz bought them out. Had one for a morning snack today....unless you specifically mean chocolate. I thought I saw them but I usually just buy cherry.
@editorkid Candy cigarettes. The gateway drug.
@kanzatonian maybe a gateway to snorting the contents of the little plastic fruit bottles I posted.
@CowboyDann Chocolate, they gotta be chocolate. Local Save A Lot's sells some off the wall brand for a buck each. They are a mass of choclate pudding wrapped in a sugar glazed crust. So good!

@editorkid Get yer candy cigs right here: http://www.amazon.com/Candy-Crate-DK-Cigarettes/dp/B000BXSRT2
@editorkid Definitely Screaming Yellow Zonkers.

it just HAD to be chocolate
@medz This would make an awesome GIF.
@mfladd 6 pack of tang right here: http://www.amazon.com/Tang-Orange-Powdered-Drink-Mix/dp/B002WWHXS6
@thismyusername yeah when I googled it I did see they still made it - surprised. I found they still made Quisp cereal too - another one I loved.
@mfladd when we're kids they feed us orange tang, and when we're seniors they feed us orange metamucil ;)
@thismyusername you have an awesome username!
@mfladd Mmmm try it on vanilla ice cream or custard. To really go overboard take tang and soft-serve vanilla and swirl them together, then squirt some quality chocolate topping on it.... ahhhhh
@mfladd I loved Koogle!
@mfladd what country is this from? edit: nevermind, I see its from the usa from the 70's was it any good?
@thismyusername Chocolate peanut butter - or should I say spread, full of articificial goodness. It was the bomb back then!
I loved Great Shakes also.
Count Chocula used to be so good! It tastes nothing like it used to. They probably removed the dangerous additives and it lost it's soul in the process.
No conversation like this is complete without Crystal Pepsi:
and New Coke:
Both are (thankfully) long since gone.
@lumpthar Glad to see crystal pepsi made it to the party.
@lumpthar I never cared either way about Crystal Pepsi, but the mere mention of it brings to mind one of my all-time favorite SNL fake commercials (I really liked this particular cast too):
https://screen.yahoo.com/crystal-gravy-000000611.html
@joelmw That's incredible! I'm glad you remembered it.
@kanzatonian Ha. It's one of those things I'll probably remember when all of my meaningful memories have escaped me. ;-)
@lumpthar I actually liked Crystal Pepsi! Not the lemony version from the 70's but the reimagined version from the 80's.
@joelmw I hear you
@lumpthar I think enough time has passed that coke should try to re-introduce "new" coke (aka pepsi) and call it retro.
@juststephen ugh this picture makes me want to cry ._.
@juststephen RIP never forget.
@JonT Yep. I remember several years back I bought a whole case from Amazon when they had not quite stopped making them bit pretty close. It was twelve boxes for about $25? They lasted less than a week. :(
Oreo-O's were the shit, I still check the cereal aisle every now and then in case they ever come back
'Merican sized Orero's
General Mills Breakfast Squares: http://www.inthe80s.com/food/generalmillsbreakfastsquares0.shtml
Here's one that really IRKS me... and part of the reason is the show that had it on, and they were drinking it many years after the company went under and it was gone... http://rootbeerbarrel.com/2000/06/24/crystal-club-birchola/
Can't get it to taste remotely good.
honorable mention for Mondo
dishonorable mention for little hugs, those god forsaken jugs of sugar water and food coloring
@Lotsofgoats yesss MONDO! I would always chew on the plastic grenade pin you had to pull to open them.
@JonT They still sell them all over the place. Here's a store locator.

@Lotsofgoats Guess what- I recently saw little hugs at a birthday party for a diabetic kid, and I asked the mom. Hugs look the same, but they are now sugar -free. I was shocked.
@sammydog01 sorcery
POP ROCKS! SHEESH!
@PocketBrain I buy pop rocks weekly... if you hit a candy store you can even get the "original" style (non eXtreme).
@PocketBrain I see these at Dollar Tree all of the time.
anyone remember this....?
@bullrocky Yes! You had to use really cold water, and it still never quite solidified.
The Marathon candy bar. 10" of deliciousness.
(and the snarks start in 3...2...1...)
@Mehrocco_Mole you can still get yer fix from across the pond http://www.amazon.com/Cadbury-Curly-Wurly-England-Pack/dp/B000HNF8ZW
@thismyusername that's the most British name for a candy I can think of.
Sadly. I can no longer score a Mr. Pibb or Pibb Xtra at the local Sam's Club or movie theater. Those were the last two place left in my neck of the woods.
@jimmyd103 I think it's still floating around here (as Pibb Xtra).
@jimmyd103 pretty sure if you even speak the name "Mr. Pibb" in Texas you get shot.
@JonT only in the Pepsi 'hoods
@JonT @jimmyd103 I've seen plenty of it around the DFW metroplex.
@joelmw @jont Not certain why it is prevelent in the South and a dessert up here?
@speediedelivery I think my favorite chips are Kettle chips. & are my favorite flavors.
@speediedelivery I love purple.
@bruceoite Oh wow I forgot about these. Yum!
Also, I really miss these pretzels:
@bruceoite Agreed. I loved these things!
@bruceoite The only pretzel rod good enough for Chex-mix
And to just be completely 90s:
@bruceoite I loved these so much!
@bruceoite the peach was the best! I still can't find a good peach water.
used to live on these in college...
@mikibell where were these made? I've never heard of them. Sounds good!
@kanzatonian It was very good! The company was in Massachusetts, but I found it in Rhode Island.

Still holding out hope that they pull a Surge and bring this stuff back. Anyone else?
