LG agrees to settlement regarding bootlooping phones
8For those who may or may not know, certain LG phones (G4, V10, V20, Nexus 5X, and G5) have had an issue where they would bootloop, and become unusable.
A class action lawsuit was investigated against LG, and it looks like an agreement was reached.
Claimants can get either $425 via check (technically a cash settlement), or a $700 rebate towards a new LG phone.
If you or somebody you know was affected, you can find more details here.

So…
At around the same time that I posted this, the survey was closed.
According to a comment on that Android Police article, if people didn’t join several months ago, then it is too late.
I guess what I’m saying is that this thread isn’t really that useful.
Heh, for a minute I felt bad not getting a pair of 5x’s last year, now I feel ok about it again.
Well huh. I had the G4 that boot-looped about a year ago but I brought it straight in to Sprint where they handed me a brand new G5 and sent me on my way. So in the end, I came out fine but still would have been good to know about this before. Bummer. Though, I doubt I would have been able to join anyway since Sprint rectified my issue immediately by upgrading the phone to the newest version available at the time.
However, my buddy had his G4 boot-loop as well but they only handed him another G4 saying it wasn’t one of the affected ones so I bet he really would have liked to get in on this!
What is the survey password?
Funny.
@cengland0 Okay, THAT is hilarious. XD
Well, damn it. I had two Nexus 5xs and both ended up with the bootloop issue. With the first one, it was just past my year warranty and nothing was online about it being a huge issue at that point, so I figured I was out of luck. I just sucked it up and bought another another one since I have Google Fi and it was the cheapest option.
The second one seemed to be better, but then I learned about the issue and decided to order a Pixel 2 during the holiday sales rather than wait for something to happen to the 5x. Like on cue, the second 5x shut off and went into the bootloop. I was able to get it restarted long enough to factory reset by putting it in a freezer and then Google Fi paid me a trade in price of $110 for a now useless phone.
Now it looks like I could have gotten something else for all the issues, but I missed it. Yep, that sounds about right.
Wife had a LG G4 with lots of issues, but never the bootloop. I had a Nexus 5 without bootloop. Sill would like to get some free money though.
@medz
The Nexus 5 was not part of this case.
Unless you meant the 5X.
@PlacidPenguin No. I didn’t mean that. Don’t put words in my mouth.

@medz
I have no intention of putting any words in your mouth.
@PlacidPenguin I know. Only teasing.

/r/Android and /r/Nexus5X are full of people who didn’t know about any of this.
I contacted the law firm sometime last year when I saw that they were looking into a lawsuit, but since my case ended well, I never finished the process.
But for those who didn’t know about any of this…
𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄!
According to Girard Gibbs, there is no class action settlement. They make that pretty clear with bold letters. (The settlement reported here is only for people involved in a lawsuit which ended up in arbitration).
As seen in the screenshot, LG is extending the warranty for everybody else with an affected device(the G4, G5, V10, V20, and the Nexus 5X) from 12 months from date of purchase, to 30 months.
Article by Ars Technica with more details.
@PlacidPenguin the option for Girard Gibbs to represent you in arbitration was buried relatively deep in an email from them in late June.
I purchased my 5x on June 27, 2016 (the date from paypal) and it died on November 18, 2017 so maybe I’ll be able to get something from LG for it. Thanks, @PlacidPenguin.
