Learning from your juniors
23Last night my teenage nephew said something that has possibly changed my worldview. We brought in a ton of groceries for a cookout today, and with that plus stuff my sister bought that she needs to store here until they go home, it was too much for my haphazardly loaded fridge to take.
He offered to come rearrange the fridge, and his explanation was simple yet something I never thought of on my own.
“It’s not about rearranging the stuff, it’s about rearranging the space.”
Damned if everything didn’t make it into the fridge with room to spare.
But as I sit this morning, fires lit and meat slowly cooking for lunch, I realized that that works everywhere outside the fridge too.
“It’s not about rearranging the stuff, it’s about rearranging the space.”
Look at the problem from the other side. Don’t look at the trees, check out the forest.
That kid is going places.
It’s nice to be able to learn from our juniors sometimes, and be secure in the fact that we don’t know everything. But if we listen, we can know a little more than before.

@f00l Stuff, the Final Frontier
I like to say that one of my main hobbies is hanging out with other people’s kids. I help with youth at church. I coach a youth STEM/Robotics team. I legitimately like hanging out with kids, especially teenagers. And part of the reason is that kids think differently than I do. They challenge me to think about things from the other side or from upside down or backwards to frontwards. (Plus I never have to hear about labor and delivery stories, potty training, the horrors of dealing with home owner’s insurance to get a new roof…Those stories have their place. I just prefer other topics of conversation. ). Kids are fun. Other people’s kids are incredibly awesome because, most of the time, when I see them it’s for something fun. And then I can send them back to their parents.
