Learning from your juniors

Last night my teenage nephew said something that has possibly changed my worldview. We brought in a ton of groceries for a cookout today, and with that plus stuff my sister bought that she needs to store here until they go home, it was too much for my haphazardly loaded fridge to take.

He offered to come rearrange the fridge, and his explanation was simple yet something I never thought of on my own.

“It’s not about rearranging the stuff, it’s about rearranging the space.”

Damned if everything didn’t make it into the fridge with room to spare.

But as I sit this morning, fires lit and meat slowly cooking for lunch, I realized that that works everywhere outside the fridge too.

“It’s not about rearranging the stuff, it’s about rearranging the space.”

Look at the problem from the other side. Don’t look at the trees, check out the forest.

That kid is going places.

It’s nice to be able to learn from our juniors sometimes, and be secure in the fact that we don’t know everything. But if we listen, we can know a little more than before.
