Robotics expert Peter W. Singer told the Associated Press this is the first instance of a robot being used to kill a suspect. Brown said he say no other way to ensure the safety of his officers.
It was a weapon. Police used it. Asimov would have classified the existence of the killer as a proven peril. Fortunately the judgement was made at a human level.
Well, technically drones are robots, so it may have been the first time the Dallas PD had done this. Reports say ‘Northrop Grumman Remotec Andros F6A or F6B’, but a Roomba could have done it. That’ll be discussed for awhile.
@jbartus It was the latter. But then, if it had been the former, the laws of robotics still wouldn’t apply, because this is the real world, not a novel by Isaac Asimov.
Personally I agree, given that they were totally out classed in this instance they did what the had to to regain control. However the genie has been let out of the bottle.
Not rewritten – this wasn’t a robot’s A.I. making a decision but humans using the robot as a tool and setting the outcome.

Was it actually an autonomous robot or just a remotely operated robotic vehicle? If the latter the laws of robotics don’t apply.

@jbartus Are your asking a question?
@jbartus Yeah, but that will be a popular costume at Dragon Con. Cosplay and bad taste are inextricable.

For those confused, Dallas PD strapped a bomb to a bomb diffusing robot and made it say “hello” to the suspect.

Ad-hoc use by the military in other countries, initial use inside this country. Legal scholars are going to be busy with this, but I personally think they did the right thing. http://wonkette.com/603870/dallas-probably-doesnt-signal-rise-of-police-death-robots-at-least-not-yet-probably
Roomba is cheaper. http://store.irobot.com/education-research-robots/irobot-create-programmable-robot/family.jsp?categoryId=2591511

Should have used a dolphin, or a shark with a laser beam strapped to its head.
@walarney Fa love Pa…not sure if you were referencing that movie.
@mehbee movie and/or the actual practice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_dolphin
