Keurig Kwestion
3I recently bought my first k cup brewer( a Mr coffee branded model) on clearance for $17.50. picked up a couple boxes of kcups, ( Maxwell House, and Tim Hortons) so far every cup “brewed” tastes like plastic. More so with the Maxwell House, but still noticeable with the Timmie’s.
Does this go away with time, or did I miss something? BTW, got no instructions, as it was the former display model…

No Mr. Coffee here, but neither my B31 or K40 have that issue. How much water have you flushed through it before your first brew?
@narfcake 20-ish oz reservoir, 2-3 of those… ( Also, no lid on reservoir, likely why it was so deeply clearanced…)
Getting ready to do a serious vinegar flush, just cuz…
Ordered a new reservoir with lid ( couldn’t get just the lid ) for $11-ish shipped( half of that was shipping)
Buy the re-usable k-cups. You put your own coffee in them. It tastes great every time, and you do something good for the environment.
@hollboll that is the eventual plan…
@hollboll Do you have the regular Keurig brand reusable k cup? I think that’s the one I used with less than stellar results. I gave up on it pretty quickly, but maybe I need to revisit that. Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated
@hollboll That works great, unless you get a non-Keurig model that punches out the back of a cup, instead of using the needle point hole that a reusable cup expects.
@salaosantiago can’t speak for @hollball, but I plan on getting an " aftermarket" one. There are some in the coffee aisle, with a scoop, for $7.99, while the official Keurig model is $14.99, what can I say, I’m cheap. That’s why I bought a $17.50 Keurig. No way am I paying $60+ for a single cup coffee maker.( Or any coffee maker really…)
@earlyre i bought a bunch of knock offs of the make-your-own-keurig a while back. they’re pretty alright.
if anyone want the deets, i can go back and check my amazon account.
i’ve never experienced the plastic taste, that might be cleared up when you do the serious vinegar flush.
oh yea, then you’ll get the vinegar taste
@salaosantiago I can’t remember the brand off the top of my head, I’ll check when we get home. I’m 99% sure they’re not the Keurig brand. If I remember correctly, I got them at Bed Bath and Beyond like 4 for $10 or less. They came with 2 black 2 red reusable cups.
I love 'em. Had them for a few years now and only had 1 that got broken (it had a run-in with the garbage disposal). I have my ground coffee in a tin with a scoop, pretty easy to do every morning. I don’t have any issue with the grounds getting into the coffee or anything like that. They’re super easy to clean too, just dump the grounds in the garbage (or composter if that’s your thing) and rinse it out with a tiny bit of soap.
@hollboll Thanks! I feel reinvigorated, and I think it’s time to scour my many drawers full of useless kitchen contraptions to find… Ehhhh - Hell with that, I’ll just stop at Bed Bath & Beyond.
Or maybe I’ll see if my grocery store has something, like @earlyre kindly suggested.
When the water supply bowl of our portable ice maker got moldy (kinda long story), we ran a cycle of vinegar, then lemon juice, followed by 2 cycles of plain water after scrubbing everything I could reach. No detectable off flavor at this point. Maybe this approach could help?
@compunaut currently going this route. 1qt vinegar straight.
Mix that vinegar with an equal portion H20, run that through.
Follow with additional 2 qts of H20.
Run the used 50/50 blend through regular 12 cup Mr coffee. Rinse him, and discard all fluids.
Well, after that treatment, made 1 cup with the Maxwell house, no plastic smell or taste… And for the first time in my life, I could tolerate black coffee!( usually a 2 cream, 2 sugar guy)
We’ve had several brands of K-cup brewers, including Cuisinart, Keurig, and Mr. Coffee. No one has ever mentioned a plastic taste from any.
If you were going to cheap out, you should have bought one of these. perfect coffee every time.

@cranky1950 But that doesn’t do all the flavors you can get in K-cups!
@cranky1950 also i already have a regular single cup brewer. A lovely stainless Hamilton Beach model.

Go to the coffee snob store and you can buy all the flavors you want. I find k cups taste watered down.
Regular k-cup coffee all taste like plastic to me even after years of cleaning and use. I buy from Nuts.com now. Their coffee is very tasty and it’s in a mesh cup instead of plastic.
I have the Mr Coffee kcup brewer. Received it as a gift last Christmas. I have never had that problem, thank God.
We tried probably every K-cup in a Keurig we got for a gift. We never could stand any of them. yuk.
We also tried the single-cup refillable ones but found it’s easier & better to just use the French press or a half-load in the drip machine if we just want a couple cups of coffee…
I have a Keurig that I bought though Office Depot. I specifically bought the K10 (now replaced with the K15) model so water doesn’t stay in the reservoir, you only pour in the amount of water you will use for the cup you are making. I find that if you leave water in those type of appliances:
This is why I usually don’t use the setups in bank lobbies and/or waiting room at Dr’s offices…
I often use mine to make a cup of coffee while I am waiting for the drip maker to do it’s thing. The Keurig will spit out a cup in the time I spend to set up the grounds and water for the other maker, which then takes 10 minutes to make a full pot.
I get my k-cups from OD when they go on sale at buy two, get one free (which happens fairly often). Using my credits for recycling ink cartridges (gathered from work), I can typically generate $20 credit a month, and when they go on sale I can get 3 boxes of 18 for about $4 (plus tax) out of pocket making them around 7 cents each… I can often get more than 3 boxes at a time if I have accumulated a couple of months of $20 credits. Yes, I am cheap that way.
Coffee should be roasted within 15 months of harvest
Coffee should be ground within 15 days of roast
Coffee should be consumed within 15 minutes of grind
@Cerridwyn shoulda, woulda, coulda…but don’t
@chienfou I am sorry for your loss

A friend of mine gets K-cups from Ollies. Really low prices.
@poofladyah… the ever present at Ollies Ripafratta, or as my brother and I both refer to it, rip-a-fart-a…
