@cinoclav if oxygen tanks had a hex stud as a tank valve operating rod I would agree with you. It’s more of an oval shape. I mean I’ve only been in EMS for 17 years I’d like to think I would have run into this type of valve by now if it’s so common. You can buy hex tools to use with it like little sickest and the like. The HEST knife has sort of the same idea.
// You know who does amazing shit every day to save people’s lives, in a hundred different impossible-to-predict situations? EMTs. They’re probably the closest thing to superheroes we have in real life. //
I’m not going to make any friends here … But I gotta say this, hoping everyone will chime in that my sample size is too small.
Two years ago, outdoor concert, older gentleman is showing pre-heart attack symptoms
A bunch of us call 911 and attend to the guy. Have him chew an aspirin, get him to lie down, loosen his shirt, try to clear the A/O so he can get outta there quickly.
EMT shows up, the two jag-offs spend forever messing around with the gurney, looking at paperwork on their clipboards, calling in to tell dispatch they made it.
We’re yelling, “over here, over here!!”
Chuckleheads do their best postal service worker impersonation, saunter over to us at about 0.5 mph. Take forever loading him, push him to the ambulance like he’s a Ming vase they don’t want to drop.
@MehnofLaMehncha as much as the time it takes to do stuff seems like the wrong thing to do it’s critical to preventing future injury. I can’t account for the guys you dealt with taking their sweet time but when my dad fell twenty five feet out of a tree two years ago there was a very serious chance of back injury and even though hypothermia was setting in by the time anyone even found him, never mind calling the EMTs, not rushing could have been the difference between paralysis and normal function if he’d had a back injury. It was frustrating to watch but generally speaking they don’t take any longer than they need to in order to ensure the patient’s safety.
@MehnofLaMehncha as a former EMT/medic, i thought i’d chime in here. let’s break down your scenario:
messing around with the gurney – ok. i don’t know what they would have been doing. can you clarify what you mean?
looking at paperwork on their clipboards – before they got to the patient? were they looking to see what area the patient was located in? though you were yelling “we’re over here”, it’s an outdoor concert. they probably didn’t hear you.
calling in to tell dispatch they made it – they have to do this so another crew isn’t dispatched. should just be a quick “we’re on site” on the radio.
Take forever loading him – were they actually doing something? like attaching a EKG? or starting an IV? or getting vitals or the patient’s medical history. just because the patient is showing pre-heart attack symptoms doesn’t mean they’re having a heart attack. if the EMTs attached a monitor and saw a good rhythm, the patient had a strong, steady pulse and their BP was normal, there may not have been a reason to rush.
, push him to the ambulance like he’s a Ming vase – you don’t run with a patient on the stretcher unless you’re in an incredibly dangerous situation. i don’t know if you’ve ever pushed one of those things with a 150-200lb person on them, but, if you try to go too fast, you can tip it over. if the situation is that critical, you move the ambulance closer.
i’ve been fortunate that everyone i ever worked with has been incredibly professional and knew their shit. so, don’t base your judgment on a sample size of 2.
As a retired neurosurgeon I used to use my Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife in the operating theater on an almost daily basis. Nothing did a better job at slicing throug through those pesky brain tumors than my Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife, I don’t give a good god damn what the malpractice board said when they took my license away. That mother of four was dead before she walked through the doors that day, it’s not my fault she bled out!
My Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife comes in real handy at my new job too! The blade is perfect for slicing open sacks of spuds, I just used the wrench last week to repair a leaky oil line on the fryolator, and when we can’t get the bottle of ketchup open for that guy’s kids I just bust to top off the bottle, the glass shards are good for kids, it builds toughness! What’s the big idea parading his whiny brats into my restaurant every week anyhow? You already cost me my career guy, what more do you want from me?!
Sorry, I got a little sidetracked there. The Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife, there’s no better knife for committing negligent manslaughter or medical malpractice. Buy yours today at meh.com and be sure to pick up VMP while you’re at it.
The reviews on the knife look solid, should I be cancelling my order?
Also, this is all your fault, you’re the one who sucked me back into Meh. I still need to take a video of me making a smoothie with bananas for the banana / blendtec threads…
@jbartus Twice the price (or half the knives) and a silly wrench? Are these Kershaws of similar utter meh-ness as the pro-irons? They’re pretty crap knives, but for 8 bucks, it holds and edge long enough to stab once. The flip stud is nice, does this have that? The lock is a PITA to release, though. You have to hold it so that the blade closes on your thumb to release the blade lock. Terrible design, IMO.
@mike808 not sure what you mean by flip stud but these are assisted opening if that’s what you mean. Almost every knife I can think of has a similar blade lock release design, I think the idea is you’re going to be disinclined to rush
Good knife for a solid price. Got it last time and lost it… But it was a good tool while I had it. Bought a similar CRKT knife to replace it Online for $70 and I still prefer the Kershaw.
As a knitted mascot for an online daily deal site, I recently found myself trapped in a plastic storage bin. If only I would have had my Kershaw 8100GRYST Funxion EMT Serrated Knife with SpeedSafe I could have used it to free myself from my plastic confines. I would have used its top-of-the-line Chinese steel 8Cr13MoV blade to cut an escape from my plastic prison. While making my escape I would have noticed how the aluminum handle lightens the weight and features a rubber textured insert for a secure grip.
The easy one-handed opening is a must when your entire being is only one hand.
In for 4 more for the next time I get trapped, and of course I got VMP… it’s the best deal in daily deal puppet character rescue tool shipping!!!
Good timing. I needed a new shank. My last one, also a Kershaw, didn’t last long, so I’m hoping this one will restore my faith in the brand. I guess I’m just hoping for a little Kershaw shank redemption.
I’m trying to justify the purchase, but I already have five knives, two from Meh, and can’t see myself ever needing to use any of the extra gizmos on this thing.
@Dizavid This is my dilemma. We have a ton of knives, and have the cartool emergency things. It would be cool to have it all in one place, but not when we already have other things doing those jobs.
@Dizavid@thumperchick, for what it’s worth, this is my favorite knife we’ve ever sold on Meh. I don’t really use the extra attachments on it, but I love the knife.
As a knife collector and a firefighter EMT…this knife blows. You need hardened steel for a glass breaker and this doesn’t have it. Makes that worthless. You can’t open the blade with the Caribbean out, so no quick use if it’s clipped to you. Lots of complaints about a weak clip from Amazon.
@ColeSloth +1 to the clip issue. After having an amazing clip on my benchmade grip, I can’t go back to the Kershaw clip. Not going to point out anything else at this price, but ease of deployment is a make or break for any knife.
@ColeSloth As someone who has this knife in each of my vehicles on a loop of 550 cord with a Fox 40 whistle and a small LED Lenser light hung off the steering column. I was taken back by the blade lock when I got my first one as it made it impractical for my intended use. Try doing the following… opening the blade, then opening the carabiner, now close the knife. You just bypassed the safety lock and made it like all the other Kershaw Speedsafe knifes, it will open/close with the carabiner in any position.
With the weakness of the side clip, I can’t comment but mine have many thousands of miles hanging from the carabiner and haven’t failed yet.
As far as the glass breaker goes, why does it need to be “hardened” steel? I believe the point here is to make a big pressure on a small surface. My concern would be for mere mortals using it would be their risk of cuts from the small shards of glass with unprotected skin. Another concern with the “pocket” knives with protruding glass breakers may be cutting /scraping yourself on the protrusion of the glass breaker while sliding your hand into your pocket.
Personally, even though it’s heavier, I like this aluminum model offered here today better than the plastic handled version of the same knife.
@ColeSloth I saw you replied and did a little checking on this knife. Not sure where you got that the glass breaker tip was steel or needed to be “hardened” steel, I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere in the Meh or Kershaw description.
Other than the windshield, auto glass can easily be taken out using a variety of items, some of which can be found on a scene.
An auto antenna.
You wrote:
“the point cannot break car gkass unless you swing it REALLY hard. Dangerously hard. The steel is too soft to break glass”.
Myth busted:

It’s all about technique, not force!
According to Kershaw, it doesn’t have a steel tip it has: " A carbide glassbreaker tip can help get you out of a tough situation".
Taken from here:
Published on May 17, 2013
Key tools that can be vital in an emergency
The Funxion EMT offers a selection of key functions that can make all the difference in an emergency situation.
Thanks to SpeedSafe assisted opening, the blade is open and ready to help instantly. A quick pull back on the ambidextrous flipper or push on the thumbstud and the blade is ready for use, right now. The big, drop-point blade is ideal for taking on a wide variety of everyday and not-so-everyday cutting tasks. The 8Cr13MoV blade steel offers excellent wear resistance, toughness, and edge retention. A locking liner secures the main blade and tool. The partially serrated blade can cut through webbing to free trapped accident victims. The cord cutter makes quick work of nylon cording. There’s a hex bolt wrench and a screwdriver tip built into the cord cutter arm. A carbide glassbreaker tip can help get you out of a tough situation.
The Funxion EMT’s anodized aluminum handle is attractive, lightweight, and sturdy. A non-slip handle insert enhances a secure grip. The Funxion EMT comes with Kershaw’s deep-carry clip for secure pocket carry—or clip it just about anywhere with the built-in carabiner.
IMO, the one place that Kershaw did miss the boat on this knife as far as an EMT knife is in choosing the hex wrench as an option. I believe they should have used a rounded end rectangle instead as that is what is used on portable O2 valves (just in case the one attached to the tank has mysteriously disappeared since it was checked at the beginning of the shift).
Zoom in on picture 4–3Cr13, i.e. it’s one of the Walmart specials with reduced-quality steel to make their price point. Then again, some say the listed 8Cr13MoV isn’t exactly worth writing home about either.
@Orenj that would be a lot of pointless effort, there’s only so many ways to photograph a knife. Doing a silly photo for the end is one thing but rephotographing a knife in views which can be obtained pre-photographed would be an awful waste of time and manpower.
The following is simply a record of what happened. I’m not complaining or asking for anything here. Just a guy thinking and talking. Please respond accordingly.
I came from Daring Fireball just to check the site out. I almost bought this deal.
I saw the price, $14, and the Amazon price, $23. I’ve been looking at this exact knife (sans grey) for a quite a while waiting for a good deal (like this one).
I put all my information in and I was one click away-- then, the brick wall. $5 shipping.
No deal. The price is now $19. That’s not nearly as much of an improvement on the Amazon price which included free shipping.
I’m honestly not sure about the psychology here, whether I would have made the purchase if you included shipping in a listed price of $19 or if the absolute cost put me out.
Either way, the only thing I know for sure is that I’m not buying the knife.
Again, I’m not trying to be a peen. Just thought the story should be told. Now it’s open for discussion.
@avtraino Same premise…just thinking and writing. Even though the Meh price does not include shipping, the final price with shipping is $19, that is still~17% less than Amazon at $23. So, a good deal on the exact same knife that you have been wanting. Tell you what, I just bought this knife and I’ll sell it you for $22.95 with free shipping! Or, a better idea, as cshillaber says,“get VMP… it’s the best deal in daily deal puppet character rescue tool shipping!!!”
@carl669 that’s the primary issue I think. The Meh graphic compares the Meh pre-shipping price to the Amazon shipped price, but it seems, to me at least, that they’re directly comparable.
@avtraino not all of the prices on Amazon include free shipping, it just so happens this one does. Might be worth tossing a note over to meh about as a suggestion but I don’t see this as a critical issue.
Okay, as a fellow fireballer & longer time meher, fair question. Some quick comments:
Every deal at meh isn’t a great deal. Often, they’re meh.
This is a deal for the intersection of two large sets at meh: Knife addicts and VMP members.
That said, never sign up for VMP and let it run for a month to accept their refund. That’s silly. What if you only buy something the last week of the second VMP month? You lost $3.50! OH NOES.
Instead, sign up for a month of VMP shipping when there’s a great deal on meh (oh, the oxymoronicness), sit and snipe for four weeks, then cancel VMP a month later.
That make sense? Snipe around meh until a great deal shows up, buy a month of free VMP shipping along with it rather than the insane “ship once for $5”, the worst deal going on meh, then hang out and buy whatever’s cheap for the next month that you like. There’s often something. $3 water bottles come to mind.
In the meanwhile, if you have to get a knife, buy this one from !meh (or buy it in purple, which you’ll learn is a meh may-may), and keep listening to the self-proclaimed best three-star podcast going to past the time.
I’ve had one of these for the past year or so, and I love it. I don’t really use the other attachments, but I love this knife. It’s got a good weight to it, works great for opening boxes (like when I work on returns) and looks super cool. I was hoping we’d sell them again.
Since the most important part of meh posts are the model/serial number commentary, you say the ST in 8100GRYST stands for “steel” but I’m pretty sure it stands for “serrated”.
@meh4life I received mine yesterday. It’s the 2nd one. I was expecting the top one, because I bought it here last year too and it matched the 8100GRYST.
So…I received my knives today, and they are NOT the same as the first emt I bought here and don’t even match the description. These are bulky and have plastic handles and really very cheap looking and built.
I loved my first one that’s why I bought two more…but these new ones suck pretty bad.
@nltownsend843 if you believe you recieved the wrong product, send a message to the support team at meh.com/support - if you could include a link to a photo of what you did recieve, it would probably speed up the process.
@Thumperchick
Eh its not a huge deal i guess, i did a little digging and it looks like the knives you sent out this last time are the “updated” version of the first one you sold, but the specs for this last one show it to be Model: 8100GRYST with aluminum handle and ruber grip…the ones i received are the new model 8100 (without the “gryst”) and theyre definitely not as nice.
Im not mad, just disappointed.
I’m a bit disappointed as well that the knife I received was the 8100, not the 8100GRYST… Also, the blade is made of lower quality 3Cr13 steel instead of the 8Cr13MoV that was listed in the specs… Probably not worth sending it back, but disappointing…
@kadagan You really should drop a line to meh.com/support - Sometimes there’s a mistake in a supply line, or something. At least see if there’s anything that can be done for you. Getting something not-quite-what-you-paid-for is a sucky feeling.
@carder24 Looks like it’s time to hit up cs for meh.com/support - they work M-F 8-5ish, so you may not hear back until Tues/Wed (they’re also short this week as some lucky ducky went on vacation.)
@1Fatboy They really do their best work when you message them directly through meh.com/support - that way they can access your account and respond to you and everyone else in the order they receive messages.
@kadagan technically that isn’t necessarily the one we received. For one thing, we’re kind of making an assumption that WM stands for Walmart. However, if you read over the specs on that page that knife is listed as simply an 8100, not an 8100WM.
One thought could be that Kershaw sold Meh a bunch of seconds where they were rejected for various reasons, in the case of these they might have been assembled with the wrong blade or something. Accidents happen even on assembly lines and a lot of knives might get assembled before QC notes the error and stops the line. They’re not going to throw the perfectly good knives away so…
Count me in on the disappointed train over all the knife seems really well constructed but the lower-quality blade black color and plastic chassis is disappointing. We’ll see what support has to say here before deciding what I want to do about it probably going to keep it though it’s still a good cheap knife just not as good as we were expecting
I do have to say this. I was possibly wrong and @Orenj was possibly right, though I still don’t see why meh would bother photographing the knife when manufacturers provide photos of their products usually.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyhow, good on you for catching that @Orenj. If they actually did photograph these then shame on them for not noticing your post!
@jbartus@Orenj it’s not that simple… The knife in the official Meh picture (below) shows the lower quality steel and that it is not the 8100GRYST, but it does not show that it is an 8100WM as I showed a few posts back… Really odd…
This isn’t the first time that a kershaw knife at meh has been less than advertised. meh offered a kershaw injection 3.0 that was also a Walmart retread - then they offered it again and made a joke about the lower quality of the knife they offered.
At the time, I felt it was an honest mistake, but now I’m wondering if there is some willful ignorance about where these products come from.
@hollandnm oh I don’t think Meh intentionally mis-marketed these. They sold over 1800 of the things and only a handful of us have had anything to complain about yet. I’m guessing they ended up with a mixed pallet or something and didn’t realize it. The only part that’s kind of weird is that the images did detail the inferior steel but since meh is very forthright about such things in my experience I have to think this was an honest mistake.
You can add me to the list of ‘not overly thrilled’ recipients. Even when I’ve gotten total junk in the past, I expected total junk and have had no reason to complain. I’ve even reveled in the comedy of said junk. This is a case of receiving partial junk when the expectation is the quality that was listed. While I may glance at the photos, I rely on the description and specs of any item I buy, particularly as there seems to have been an increase in the number of stock manufacturer photos being used. It’s definitely frustrating when the product isn’t what’s listed in the specs.
TL;DR: I’m not sure this one will hold up in the long run during the zombie apocalypse.
Funny, I thought VMP’s got “Priority shipping”. My knife is supposed to arrive on the 9th, and my Son who isn’t a VMP got his 2 days ago, same address even. Meh
@Gumby VMP in no way affects shipping, except to eliminate your need to pay for it. I suggest you use the extra money to distract yourself from how freaking slow surepost and smartpost are.
@Wolverine350r I’m thinking that the folks with the correct knife probably won’t be jumping into the forums. I’m sure the folks at meh are tracking down the issue as quickly as mediocrity allows.
Same here. The blade doesn’t bother me as much as the claim of an aluminum handle with rubber inserts. That just makes the all plastic build of the one I got feel even cheaper.
@DrunkCat Meh is advertising an 8CR13MOV (8CR part means it is 8% chromium and the 17MoV means .17% molybdenum and .17% Vanadium) and the knife we got is a 3CR13 (Around 13% chromium and 3% carbon.) Don’t quote me on this but I think the 8CR13MOV can cut through granite but the 3CR13 has a hard time getting through butter. Add me to the list.
@densa I propose shipping everyone little baggies of molybdenum and vanadium to sprinkle on the blades and put them in the oven. 350 for an hour, then to the cooling rack. That will work, right?
@djslack I like your thinking. I think another problem is the 8CR vs the 3CR. From what I can tell, the 8C is .8% Carbon and 3C is .3% Carbon. I’m not a big knife person but from what I hear, all of that affects hardness 58HRC vs 55HRC and how long a knife can keep an edge.
So bit of a PSA I suppose. I reached out to support yesterday and received a reply today to the effect that they are aware of the issue and are actively working on a resolution.
That’s it for now, they’ll get back once there’s more to say per the email I got.
A friend got one from this latest batch and showed it to me. I was studying it when he said “it’s just like yours you got a while back”. I didn’t recognize that because the plastic grip looked different, and now that I see this controversy that all makes sense.
@tod mine from an earlier sale have the metal scales and rubber grip inserts. I also don’t think they say anything about the steel content on the blade, but they do say 8100GRYST.
Friend’s he just got has the plastic like people are taking about here.
I got a reply from MEH Support and they are working on it. They just haven’t come up with a solution yet. I’m sure this will get corrected one way or another. Here’s hoping.
Just got a reply from meh service giving me a $7 (half the purchase price) coupon code to use before the end of the year. I’m fairly content with that resolution.
@kadagan
As am I, especially since I wasn’t needing a top-tier knife in the first place. I felt it was as good as I paid for, and it shaved my legs quite nicely (I got bored sitting at my desk).
“Is it better to have received the wrong Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife, than never received one at all?”
Still waiting on the good ole’ USPS to locate the package containing the two Kershaw Funxion EMT’s I ordered within the “system” and deliver it to my house. Not sure if it’s the Fedex-hand-off-to-USPS for final delivery or what but this is the first Meh-order that has officially gone missing. (Or… did someone else help themselves to my Kershaw Funxion EMT’s???)
Meh staff, while I really wanted the other knife. Your response to this issue was more than satisfactory, and I thank you again for your great customer service. Would I have picked up the knife I received for half the price I paid? Hell to the yes!!! But I have a weakness for knives.
(now if someone could just remind me to use my coupon - my memory isn’t good)
I was the first one to mention the mix up on here, my research tells me the knives we received are “updated” replacements for the discontinued aluminum knife, I think it’s also note worthy to share this as it’s a bit of a SAFETY issue everyone on here should be aware of.
Apparently Kershaw used the saftey pin from the original (thinner knife) leaving a gap where the blade can still open even with the safety on!
@nltownsend843 The problem is your blade is not centered. Of the three I bought, one is not centered but it is to the other side than yours. You can learn to correct that by doing a search for “fix blade centering”. You will need a couple Torx bits and a little patience OR you can just send it back to the Kershaw factory.
The screw came out from the carabiner clip. Causing the lower assembly to split. This happened on my first day off carrying it. Already a warranty claim to kershaw. But it was only $7, so no big lose.
My belt clip just went on maybe the fifth time carrying it around outside of the house. It’s not even close to being spring steel, some kind of ‘pot metal’ from the looks of things. Disappointing on top of the blade issue. The point went the first time I used it to cut up boxes. Sad
Bought 2 of these and I’m here to report that the locking mechanism on both have failed/are faulty. Not cool @Meh I would recommend not selling knives in the future.

Yeah cuz that’s going to happen.
Pizza rat!!
@stardate820926 It likes it when you cut the cheese.
A good EMT has got to carry a hex wrench and bottle opener. Needs to be able to pour a beverage while he changes your laptop battery.
@MehnofLaMehncha The hex wrench works on oxygen tank valves, so yes, a good EMT kind of does need one.
@MehnofLaMehncha was that your review on Amazon?
@cinoclav if oxygen tanks had a hex stud as a tank valve operating rod I would agree with you. It’s more of an oval shape. I mean I’ve only been in EMS for 17 years I’d like to think I would have run into this type of valve by now if it’s so common. You can buy hex tools to use with it like little sickest and the like. The HEST knife has sort of the same idea.
@emtmark many are square, actually. Not oval.
This deal is a cut above and Cutting up tonight
What is that rat holding?
Nothing like “kkk” imprints on your hand from the handle.
@Tin_Foil When you get tired of the hand cramps, just get some awesome tats, bro.
Can I trade the last Kershaw knife I bought for this one?
@DrunkCat that is what I was thinking. This is the one I really wanted.
No rim spinner here, Meh.
Picked this up the last time. I love this knife.
@greychr by the handle?

@communist I prefer meh.com; shorter. Same products.
Make it a Kershaw Funyun EMT knife and I’m in.
$8-$10 and I’d buy it.
@robson yeah!
Loved that.
@mfladd nice image
Why you no offer a fixed blade stabber?
@yakkoTDI they’re illegal in many municipalities, for one.

Wearing my Members Only jacket and listening to Abbey Road… trying to decide if this knife fits in with that.
@Sevylor7 do you really have a Members Only jacket? xD
@jbartus Yup. People notice it when I’m rockin the white Girbaud jeans. Or is it the Z-Cavs? I forget.
@Sevylor7 Leave Abby Road alone!!!
Good knife. My wallet shanks you.

@jbartus do you buy everything here now?
@mfladd it feels that way.

@jbartus nah, love kershaws. Was close myself.
@mfladd thanks to you I’m having buyer’s remorse and I haven’t even seen the knife yet!
Got 2-Fer $16 of this similar knife. What is better about this Meh deal?
Pro-Iron (Chinese knockoff, I know) $16

@mike808 two words.
Crescent Wrench
How does the Bluetooth work?
@cpierce Poorly
@cpierce Not good; it cuts in and out.
@cpierce You can rescue people up to 30 feet away.
Good knife for a solid price. Got it last time and lost it… But it was a good tool while I had it. Bought a similar CRKT knife to replace it Online for $70 and I still prefer the Kershaw.
@afoxwelter Someone else that lost theirs! I’ve been waiting, since that cord cutter is the handiest thing around new Scouts.
I’ve got meh membership so why not
@thekenya A Mehmbership, right?
I use mine daily, clipped to my multitool sheath. Picked up one for backup, and one for the missus. I highly recommend.
Alright. In for two flip stabbers.
unhurried-superfluous-party
@cshillaber I didn’t get further than the first line before I pretty much lost it. Your finest commentary to date.
Good timing. I needed a new shank. My last one, also a Kershaw, didn’t last long, so I’m hoping this one will restore my faith in the brand. I guess I’m just hoping for a little Kershaw shank redemption.
@Wizard_Mike I don’t like this, but take my damn star.
@Wizard_Mike Get busy shivving or get busy dying.
Only if you ship them with some finger prints already on them.
I have found the liner lock to be a bit hard to actuate if you have big thumbs
I’m trying to justify the purchase, but I already have five knives, two from Meh, and can’t see myself ever needing to use any of the extra gizmos on this thing.
@Dizavid This is my dilemma. We have a ton of knives, and have the cartool emergency things. It would be cool to have it all in one place, but not when we already have other things doing those jobs.
@Dizavid @thumperchick, for what it’s worth, this is my favorite knife we’ve ever sold on Meh.
One of Kershaws worst knives.
@1Fatboy the point cannot break car gkass unless you swing it REALLY hard. Dangerously hard. The steel is too soft to break glass.
You wrote:

Myth busted:

It’s all about technique, not force!
According to Kershaw, it doesn’t have a steel tip it has: " A carbide glassbreaker tip can help get you out of a tough situation".
Taken from here:

At this price… I was “in 4 3” more!
Zoom in on picture 4–3Cr13, i.e. it’s one of the Walmart specials with reduced-quality steel to make their price point. Then again, some say the listed 8Cr13MoV isn’t exactly worth writing home about either.
@Orenj often times manufacturers don’t bother rephotographing cosmetically identical items.
@jbartus I guess I’m optimistically assuming that meh has taken their own mediocre photos of the actual product they have on hand?
@Orenj that would be a lot of pointless effort, there’s only so many ways to photograph a knife. Doing a silly photo for the end is one thing but rephotographing a knife in views which can be obtained pre-photographed would be an awful waste of time and manpower.
I want a knife with a plastic tooth pick and little scissors.
Or an Opinel.
@avtraino Sign up for VMP and order one (or three). At the very least it will give you free shipping on any future orders for the next month. If you retain VMP and don’t order anything that month they will happily refund your $5. Read the VMP details here: https://mediocre.com/vmp and here: https://meh.com/forum/topics/how-to-cancel-vmp-current-as-of-22515
@avtraino the amazon price of $23 has shipping charges built in.
@avtraino @cinoclav Man, what a peen!
(Did I type that out loud? I keed, I keed! ;^D)
Okay, as a fellow fireballer & longer time meher, fair question. Some quick comments:
That make sense? Snipe around meh until a great deal shows up, buy a month of free VMP shipping along with it rather than the insane “ship once for $5”, the worst deal going on meh, then hang out and buy whatever’s cheap for the next month that you like. There’s often something. $3 water bottles come to mind.
In the meanwhile, if you have to get a knife, buy this one from !meh (or buy it in purple, which you’ll learn is a meh may-may), and keep listening to the self-proclaimed best three-star podcast going to past the time.
25 seconds in.
@stinks at least we can all come together on how hilarious that video is. Thanks for sharing
@avtraino I’m not sure hillarious is the word… will you take vaguely amusing?
This is the first knife in å great while that I am tempted to buy, but it has a combo blade so no deal.
I’ve had one of these for the past year or so, and I love it. I don’t really use the other attachments, but I love this knife. It’s got a good weight to it, works great for opening boxes (like when I work on returns) and looks super cool. I was hoping we’d sell them again.
picturesque-feeble-prawn
@hollboll hey, what are you some kind of corporate shill?
That’s @cshillaber’s job!
Great blade. Carry one like this daily.
i’m not sure. will this knife allow me to win at knifey spoony?
Jiminy Crickets…why? Except for the fact I like knives.
distinct-crafty-privateer
That $5 shipping killed the deal for me!
I do not need another knife. In for three.
scattered-hideous-owner
In for one. I got MVP and it’s the first thing this month worth buying.
@ikickedagirl How’d you get MVP? I feel like you may have been hoodwinked.
So many complaints yet they sold over 1400 of these. The data cuts through the complaints, yet once again.
Here’s a one-hand assisted meh!
Dammehnit!
I don’t need another knife! I don’t use the forty-eleven you’ve already sold me! I may already have this one, who knows?
In for one.
As usual.
Whew, re-checked my old orders, I do indeed have this knife…and in RED! Mo’ bettah.
Bullet dodged…off to waste my saved $14 elsewhere.
Since the most important part of meh posts are the model/serial number commentary, you say the ST in 8100GRYST stands for “steel” but I’m pretty sure it stands for “serrated”.
@JoeyViner Possibly… Serrated Tanto
The link on the Meh page goes to http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-8100GRYST-Funxion-Serrated-SpeedSafe/dp/B006YBY9UG, whose price is $33.06. The one whose price is $23 is this one, http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-8100-Funxion-EMT-SpeedSafe/dp/B00KYR1UGM, but it appears to be all black, not “grey steel”. So which one is this, really?
@Thumperchick
I’m a bit disappointed as well that the knife I received was the 8100, not the 8100GRYST… Also, the blade is made of lower quality 3Cr13 steel instead of the 8Cr13MoV that was listed in the specs… Probably not worth sending it back, but disappointing…
forgot to post the picture…
@kadagan You really should drop a line to meh.com/support - Sometimes there’s a mistake in a supply line, or something. At least see if there’s anything that can be done for you. Getting something not-quite-what-you-paid-for is a sucky feeling.
I received the wrong knife as well…
@carder24 Looks like it’s time to hit up cs for meh.com/support - they work M-F 8-5ish, so you may not hear back until Tues/Wed (they’re also short this week as some lucky ducky went on vacation.)
@Thumperchick Thank you, just sent message to support.
Hey @MEHcus @galmaegi @hollboll - Looks like there was an issue with people getting the wrong model number knife.
@ThumperchickT Thanks! We will look into it on Monday.
Please make note of mine too. Three wrong.
While the box says 8100 and not 8100GRYST as the description on Meh advertised, the blade is stamped 8100WM as depicted in the picture posted above.
My guess is the WM stands for WalMart.
In comparison to the 8100GRYST which is a nice budget knife with a purpose, these knives pretty much suck.
@1Fatboy They really do their best work when you message them directly through meh.com/support - that way they can access your account and respond to you and everyone else in the order they receive messages.
@Thumperchick Will do. I believe this problem will most likely apply to all that purchased though.
@1Fatboy Mine was also stamped 8100WM
@1Fatboy I find it interesting that the Walmart version lists the blade as 8Cr13MoV steel, not the 3Cr13 that we received… odd
They’re not going to throw the perfectly good knives away so…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Count me in on the disappointed train over all the knife seems really well constructed but the lower-quality blade black color and plastic chassis is disappointing. We’ll see what support has to say here before deciding what I want to do about it probably going to keep it though it’s still a good cheap knife just not as good as we were expecting
@jbartus same here
I got the wrong one, too. I think meh got a bunch of the cheap Walmart version and didn’t update the description this time around.
@jbartus @Orenj it’s not that simple… The knife in the official Meh picture (below) shows the lower quality steel and that it is not the 8100GRYST, but it does not show that it is an 8100WM as I showed a few posts back… Really odd…
@kadagan that is odd… I’m increasingly thinking this is a matter of them having been shipped a mixed lot and not realizing it.
@hollandnm I think the supplier gave them the wrong one, or the person doing the description didn’t know it was different than last time.
It’s an honest mistake, but I wouldn’t have bought this plastic one for this much money, so it needs to be dealt with.
/giphy make it rain
@Gumby VMP members do, however, get priority over non-members for customer support. So, yay?
@Thumperchick @Gumby @DaveInSoCal VMP certainly affects shipping!
@cinoclav they just move them out of the warehouse to get some sun and fresh air, they don’t put them on the trucks.
Two more here that are not 8100GRYST models. I read through the most recent posts, but did anyone veryify getting the correct knife?
@Wolverine350r I’m thinking that the folks with the correct knife probably won’t be jumping into the forums. I’m sure the folks at meh are tracking down the issue as quickly as mediocrity allows.
@Thumperchick That’s a knife answer.
/giphy punny
ugh. that gif is terrible. I love it.
@DaveInSoCal I just took a stab at it.
/giphy knife pun
@Thumperchick I agree, I realized that after I made the post.
Yup, put me on the not so happy with the knife train. I emailed Meh support for an explanation.
Same here. The blade doesn’t bother me as much as the claim of an aluminum handle with rubber inserts. That just makes the all plastic build of the one I got feel even cheaper.
@MEHcus @hollboll @galmaegi Anyone hear anything yet about these knives? (Yes, I’ve summoned all three of you. I just like saying your names.)
@cinoclav I know I’m not those other people but I submitted a ticket via the support link and have yet to hear back.
Just a heads up that we are aware of the issue and are actively working on figuring out what to do here. Thanks for the patience everyone!
@MEHcus
Would you say that you’re trying to get a handle on this situation?
So since I bought one of these, can someone explain to me why I should be perturbed?
@DrunkCat Meh is advertising an 8CR13MOV (8CR part means it is 8% chromium and the 17MoV means .17% molybdenum and .17% Vanadium) and the knife we got is a 3CR13 (Around 13% chromium and 3% carbon.) Don’t quote me on this but I think the 8CR13MOV can cut through granite but the 3CR13 has a hard time getting through butter. Add me to the list.
@densa
/image blankstare
@DrunkCat
/giphy chemistry
@DrunkCat It’s like you paid for Oneida and got
/image uri geller spoon
@densa I propose shipping everyone little baggies of molybdenum and vanadium to sprinkle on the blades and put them in the oven. 350 for an hour, then to the cooling rack. That will work, right?
@djslack I like your thinking. I think another problem is the 8CR vs the 3CR. From what I can tell, the 8C is .8% Carbon and 3C is .3% Carbon. I’m not a big knife person but from what I hear, all of that affects hardness 58HRC vs 55HRC and how long a knife can keep an edge.
3CR13 Confirmed
So bit of a PSA I suppose. I reached out to support yesterday and received a reply today to the effect that they are aware of the issue and are actively working on a resolution.
That’s it for now, they’ll get back once there’s more to say per the email I got.
A friend got one from this latest batch and showed it to me. I was studying it when he said “it’s just like yours you got a while back”. I didn’t recognize that because the plastic grip looked different, and now that I see this controversy that all makes sense.
@djslack The one your friend has has a rubber insert and the frame is metal not all plastic right? That’s what had me bummed.
@tod mine from an earlier sale have the metal scales and rubber grip inserts. I also don’t think they say anything about the steel content on the blade, but they do say 8100GRYST.
Friend’s he just got has the plastic like people are taking about here.
Ordered 2 knives separately, and both are the 8100WM. The Kershaw box is labeled 8100 Funxion EMT.
/giphy thanks meh
@kadagan
As am I, especially since I wasn’t needing a top-tier knife in the first place. I felt it was as good as I paid for, and it shaved my legs quite nicely (I got bored sitting at my desk).
So, okay knife, plus a $7 off code? I’m good.
@kadagan
Me too. For $7.00 they are fine.
I was going to come here and yell about the email but then I saw the coupon code and well, puns are me weakness.
/giphy puns are the best
“Is it better to have received the wrong Kershaw Funxion EMT Knife, than never received one at all?”
Still waiting on the good ole’ USPS to locate the package containing the two Kershaw Funxion EMT’s I ordered within the “system” and deliver it to my house. Not sure if it’s the Fedex-hand-off-to-USPS for final delivery or what but this is the first Meh-order that has officially gone missing. (Or… did someone else help themselves to my Kershaw Funxion EMT’s???)
Many thanks unto you for the coupon codes though!
Huzzah coupon. For $7 this knife is actually pretty great. 100% satisfied with the resolution on this.
Thanks Meh…so if I use the $7 code on a Fuko…will you put $2 in the box?
@densa fuko will be long gone before you have time to enter the code.
This dang ghetto knife cut me good - I bled like a stuck pig! I’m very happy with it.
$7 for a pretty good, mean looking knife is a steal.
Meh staff, while I really wanted the other knife. Your response to this issue was more than satisfactory, and I thank you again for your great customer service. Would I have picked up the knife I received for half the price I paid? Hell to the yes!!! But I have a weakness for knives.
(now if someone could just remind me to use my coupon - my memory isn’t good)
@mfladd use your coupon, buy a shirt!
@1Fatboy no the blade is centered, im pushing it over to show it can easily clear the pin.
Sad
Has anyone tried to use the coupon code? I just tried to apply it to today’s order and it is saying it’s invalid.
Bought 2 of these and I’m here to report that the locking mechanism on both have failed/are faulty. Not cool @Meh I would recommend not selling knives in the future.
@joekeith
Well that’s not good. Did you contact support?
(Although this listing was May 2016, so…)
https://meh.com/support
@joekeith ur not cool.
@meh
I blame @ELUNO that I didn’t post a joke I was thinking of for this thing and you being tagged.
@meh I’ll be cool again once my finger grows back* (*Picture may or may not be 100% accurate or reflective of actual product use )
