@chienfou On. You know how honey jars always get a little sticky around the rim? I put the sticky pad horizontal on top of the lid, and it’s been easy more effective with fruit flies and drain gnats than anything else I’ve ever tried
@dpease
Mine does. I find some in there when I change the sticky paper on the bottom but I don’t get a lot of mosquitoes in my house. It’s not something you would use outside, I use mine for house plant gnats.
@Num1Zero i think most outdoor bugs that are attracted to uv light are harmless, or rather beneficial to eco system, so outdoor bug zappers are kinda cruel
@trimpe We put a piece of banana in a bowl with Saran wrap tightly over the top and then pricked tiny holes in it. Just 2 weeks ago we got rid of a ton of them! Actually every single one of those pesty little gnats are gone. They’re disgusting and honestly, I don’t know how we got so many of them in such a short time, I’m talking days! Previously, I’ve only had them in the summer. Our fruit is safe again and I’m not grossed out! YouTube has lots of other ways (concoctions to make) but we did about 3 different ones side by side and straight banana worked the best for us.
@Lynnerizer@trimpe - I bought the Meh wine blend one time (boy WAS it meh) but it turned out that if you put a cone of rolled paper in the neck of the open bottle (wide end up obviously) it was the most effective fruit fly clearer we ever used.
@aetris@Lynnerizer@trimpe
Do you add the sticky tape at the bottom? Otherwise they can probably fly out the holes. Also place it where you see gnat activity and run it all the time. That made a big difference in mine.
These work very well for catching and retaining stray annoying flying bugs, but they don’t attract mosquitoes. Protip: the sticky pad actually isn’t necessary; the device itself will still trap and retain the bugs and the fan will desiccate them after a few days.
Shame it doesn’t do flies, that seems to be our problem. We allow a few spiders to hang around and they seem handle the small stuff, cats take care of the moths.
@tweezak
Have a Harbor Freight (free, back in the day…) one I use. Gotta admit the crackle noise they emit when they fry a bug is VERY satisfying. Plus you can just ‘tennis racket’ the bigger things like carpenter bees.
@tweezak Mine started geting overly warm in the handle, and I need to open them up and swap out the 18650 cells that are dying, but results are similar.
But… the Zapping freaked my dogs out so badly that I had to give them [the electronic bug zappers, not the dogs] away to my B- and S-in-laws, who apparently have a less reactive dog, and non-reactive cats respectively.
I got one a while back. It seems to work pretty well, but it’s best in a darkened room. Does a good number on the little gnats that the pile of junk in my neighbor’s yard seems to generate…
Wait… we got some mixed reviews here… I grow tomatoes. Come August we generally get a deluge of fruit flies. I use a small glass with apple cider vinegar & a drop of soap. This is a better than nothing solution, lots of fruit flies get trapped, so we might have less of them.
@Joedetroit I have Katchy traps and a commercial version of what you use, the Aunt Fannie’s FlyPunch. The FlyPunch works one million times better. Katchy can help a little, but it’s unimpressive.
OTOH, I’ve tried to improvise a trap with regular vinegar, soap, and juice, and it did nothing.
@Joedetroit@whogots I use the jar with vinegar and dish soap but I also put in a few chunks of overripe fruit or tomato (also fruit) and it works extremely well, although it looks gross.
Have a different model Katchy, I am assume they are basically the same. Its pretty slow at catching stuff but over time the insects find their way to it.
@AaronLeeJohnson
There’s a type of Asian lady bug that was introduced to fight aphids that showed up around us a few years back. They congregate in groups in corners of walls and ceilings and will stain if squished. Sucking them up with the vacuum works pretty well.
@AaronLeeJohnson@chienfou@edsa Our vacuum has an attachment that separates the luck from the bugs. We’re saving it up for the next big Megabucks jackpot.
These work well. I’ve had two in my house that have been working nonstop day and night for many months. It catches a ton of those gnats that come out of potting soil (we like to grow peppers inside the house). The one in the living room has also caught many moths and flies. You can buy replacement sticky pads. I replace them every couple of weeks or so. You don’t want to buy the ones that Katchy sells, since they are expensive. There are many, cheaper ones available.
I’ve had one for years and they do catch all the mosquitos that have come into the room. The room has to be pretty much dark though. During the day I use the electric swatter which is obviously more entertaining.
I have one bc I have tons of house plants and it catches the little gnats that come out of the soil. I run mine continuously and change the sticky paper monthly. It does a pretty good job. I don’t see soil gnats anymore.
I once had an infestation of houseflies in my basement due to a rat carcass that I only found years later, all mummified in a corner. I made a pop bottle trap like one of these and it worked amazingly well, over a week or two. https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-make-a-fly-trap-1389066

This deal bugs me.
@yakkoTDI This deal anti-bugs me.
I’ve had really good luck with putting the plain yellow sticky pads on an empty honey jar. The residual sweetness draws them.
@Jamileigh17
On or in?
@chienfou On. You know how honey jars always get a little sticky around the rim? I put the sticky pad horizontal on top of the lid, and it’s been easy more effective with fruit flies and drain gnats than anything else I’ve ever tried
@Jamileigh17
Oh… I see. Makes sense!
Will this slay mosquitoes? (I know it will if they get blown into it but does it actually attract them?)
@dpease
So they claim…
@dpease No, it doesn’t.
@dpease
Mine does. I find some in there when I change the sticky paper on the bottom but I don’t get a lot of mosquitoes in my house. It’s not something you would use outside, I use mine for house plant gnats.
I got a black one years ago. Does not work on gnats. (Horrible little pest!)
@hchavers
Mine does.
Theme song for this sticky deal:
I have a couple of these. They work well.
It really stresses INDOORs. Will putting it outdoors eradicate all bugs on the planet? That could be interesting.
@Num1Zero What an interesting thought. But I believe the reason is the moisture.
@hchavers @Num1Zero
…“give spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees”…
@Num1Zero i think most outdoor bugs that are attracted to uv light are harmless, or rather beneficial to eco system, so outdoor bug zappers are kinda cruel
Got one for gnats and fruit flies. In a week, it caught one. Single. Fly.
Absolute waste of money.

@trimpe 3/4 of an inch of apple cider vinegar in a small glass (i use a turkish tea glass) with one drop of dish soap to break the surface tension.
during the summer there will be 10-20 of the suckers sunk to the bottom every few days.
@aetris @trimpe Ah… Good one!

I’m still using the flyswatters meh sold a while back. They just sit on their stands and make a loud crack once in a while. No sticky pads to replace.

I don’t know if it’s any good, but at least it has a Katchy name.
Wait… we got some mixed reviews here… I grow tomatoes. Come August we generally get a deluge of fruit flies. I use a small glass with apple cider vinegar & a drop of soap. This is a better than nothing solution, lots of fruit flies get trapped, so we might have less of them.
Does this work better than the improvised trap?

@Masterface7
Definitely seems to be a few mosquitoes on it… Thanks!
We got one and it seems that it doesn’t work for the insects I wish it worked for.
I am getting Ladybugs in my room like crazy. I hear its good luck but why?
@AaronLeeJohnson

@AaronLeeJohnson @chienfou
I think you have to leave them alone for the good luck benefit.

Not for me.
and 1a. I can cook bacon on said bug zapper.
Case closed.
@Wollyhop
@Wollyhop @xobzoo Who the hell washes bacon?!
