I use the San Francisco Bay K-cups at home. In the 120 count from Amazon, that runs about .38 per cup. Since I typically only drink one cup a day, it’s worth it to me.
At work, we use cozzy Haier. We just buy the cheap ones… less that $100. They abuse the heck out of them, so I’ve found it’s better just to count on replacing one of the cheaper models every couple years that to invest in one of the more expensive models. I don’t drink coffee at work, but those that use it seem to like it.
I don’t drink coffee, but I do occasionally use ours for hot cocoa or cider pods. I mostly use it like a kettle though, since it has a Hot Water button that I use for making hot cocoa or tea. While the single serve pod thing is pretty handy, I do have a bit of an objection to the amount of waste you generate by using them.
@Mehsturbator
Speaking of waste, I got the K65 (I think?) from Bed, Bath and Beyond several years ago. After about a month, it stopped working. I called Keurig up and after some troubleshooting, they accepted the fact it was broken and promptly offered a new one.
Then they told me I should throw the old one in the trash. Seriously? Pretty irresponsible from a recycling perspective. I took the broken one back to B,B&B and they refunded me. So I got it for free.
About a month later, the replacement started acting wonky and would only spit out half a cup and would occasionally not pump water. Same play and Keurig replaced it. While that was en route, my current one began working again. That was 4 years ago.
So now I have one that keeps on working and another, brand-new, in-box as a backup, and I never even paid for it in the first place.
@ACraigL The exact same thing happened to me, pretty much word for word, except it was Kohls. They told me to “do whatever I wanted” with the old one, so I returned it. Replacement also broke about a month in, and magically started working again while I was waiting for another replacement. I did have to send them the removable K-cup holder piece on one of them, but that was like a $3 replacement on ebay. I used the backup on my desk at work until changing jobs, at which time I sold it to a co-worker for $50.
I use a drip coffee maker.
We only drink a few cups each in the morning, and this works great.
Way back when we owned a K-cup thing, there was only a couple of coffees available.
@narfcake My wife doesn’t like coffee and not wanting to spend the $$ on K or it’s cups I was waiting until I got to the office to get my first cup. Not good. So, I bought this one. It works, no k-cup waste or filter waste. Best part is the wife gets up first and makes me a cup even though she doesn’t like coffee. She’s the best.
I’ve had a Keurig for years and generally enjoy it. I can get 100-count pods I like for about $30.00. So I don’t need another, but I’m in general support.
@CaptAmehrican My only trouble with that is that unless you use de-chlorinated (filtered or distilled etc) water, after it sits in the tank for a while it starts to taste like pool water… That’s the primary reason I got one that just does one cup at a time (<2 minutes cycle)
Love coffee. Allergic to coffee. Currently suffering a reminder of that as they had Green Mountain coffee and Hazelnut creamer where I just got my car inspected that I could not resist. It’s not my fault, it was free! Who among us can resist something they love that is offered for free?
Anyway, even if I could drink coffee I wouldn’t use a Kuerig due to the aforementioned waste issue. I drink tea and I will use tge same tea bag for several cups, especially if it’s cold out.
@narfcake Did you see that Sr. Bialetti (junior) was buried in a replica Moka pot last year?
Italy’s coffee king buried in replica of his famous Moka pot @CNNhttp://cnn.it/24cGiSC
@huja I used my electric kettle pretty much daily back when I was in an apartment. Making tea, oatmeal, ramen, cocoa, pretty much anything that I wanted hot water for I could get within a couple minutes. I’d be willing to bet they would sell really well here, especially if there are parental units sending offspring to college soon.
@huja I received one for my birthday. I only use it when I have guests but I’m glad I have it, it’s blingy and fun. It has a glass carafe and a blue light that illuminates the water. The infuser is great, it doesn’t let any leaf fragments into the water. I just use the microwave for my tea.
@mandirose I’m an old marketing guy and have struggled with similar questions. Check out this article to do some benchmarking on price and specs to figure out if you can offer a compelling value proposition for the Meh’terati. Best Electric Kettles
And then perhaps offer some follow up items that would optimize the use of the kettle (i.e. French-press/pour-over coffee makers. Coffee grinders. Teapots. Tea - pu’erh, if you’re asking). Take a Holistic “hot beverage” approach to solving the puzzle.
@mandirose I buy the $5. electric kettles that go on sale around Christmas, and make coffee in (one of my three) French presses. They’re tedious to clean and fragile but make excellent coffee if you start with excellent ground coffee. I also have a K-cup brewer from the thrift store, and use
@mandirose I paid $7 for an electric kettle. I loaned it to someone that disappeared off the face of the earth. I’m still annoyed that I haven’t found one in that price range again.
Have an existing one, but would definitely buy another one if it’s super-small, or a better dual-brew unit- regular coffee maker and a K-Cup maker (hopefully that can use reusable K-Cups).
@mandirose If you like K-Cups, you need to check out onecupjoe.com - you can buy K-Cups in singles, bunches, or the normal box.
We really like our keurig, but find the k-cups taste weak. I bought a bunch of plastic reusable k-cup containers and we fill them with ground coffee ourselves. Works much better, and less waste!
@DaveInSoCal the newer keurig have a ‘strong’ setting which brews slower. they also have a new water delivery mechanism that i presume was designed to not fail so fast.
I actually just thought of something that might be stupid or might be genius from all the people asking about hot water kettles. The K-Cup machines are big and take up a lot of counter or storage space. Some people only occasionally want coffee. Is there a way to brew a K-Cup outside of the machine, like a contraption you can put hot water in and it will punch the cup and squeeze it through? It could fit in a drawer and be good for camping too. Or it could be destined to be a failed kickstarter.
@djslack Not that I know of. At that point you might as well get an AeroPress. Though you could probably find a way to modify one to work with the pods, if you really wanted to.
Own one that I use primarily to make a cup of coffee in <2 minutes while setting up the 12 cup drip maker (yes… I have a serious coffee jones…)
The other reason I like them is that I am able to make all sorts of frou-frou flavored coffee depending on my mood.
I get coffee pods at Office Depot when they are on sale at buy two get one free, using credits I get for recycling ink toner/cartridges from work. (see…sort of like using carbon credits, isn’t it??!)
I also have the re-usable pods, so there is always that option as well.
Overall I really like my K-10 single cup maker. I am not really interested in getting one that holds water in a reservoir since the water tastes like poolwater to me if you don’t use distilled water.
Plus my wife uses it to heat water to make tea in the morning, since it works almost as fast as the microwave.
I should probably get one because I drink coffee maybe once a month. If it was small and not too expensive I would buy one. (I bought my current coffee maker from you guys.).
@sammydog01 If you buy a reusable, fill-it-yourself K-cup, you can feel very good and green. Then you get a great buy on non-reusable K-cups, and the dark side wins.
@OldCatLady I found a Keurig box labelled $6.25. Yay! Had a different brand drip coffee maker inside. Boo. My problem (one of them anyway) is that I go and buy a pound of coffee, drink it for a few days, and let it go bad. So K-cups might be a way to keep it fresh.
@Cerridwyn Do you have a timer continuously counting down, or do you just toss & remake after stepping away for any length of time (if I’m understanding the rule of 15 as coffee should never sit for more than 15 min in the pot)?
@dashcloud The rule of 15 states that
Coffee should be roasted no more than 15 months after it is harvested
Coffee should be ground no more than 15 days after it was roasted
Coffee should be consumed no more than 15 minutes after it is ground
I never make more than one serving at a time. I do french press, pour over (hand or SCA rated machine).
At work we have a super-automatic that grinds and brews a cup at a time. We use only fresh, locally roasted beans that have a roast date available. it’s not quite the same as other options but it works.
@mandirose Are these things coming? I’m thinking about buying one and need to know whether to wait a while. ( I forgot to mention I’m super impulsive).
@mikibell I ordered the one that @2palms recommended- $14 and manual. You pour boiling water in the top and push. I’ll see if I need to start lifting weights to use it.
I have the Rivo - doesn’t take K-cups, but makes espresso and steams milk. We looked at some k-cup machines, but the cost/feature blend just didn’t hit for me.
If you get one that has the hot water button and is compatible with the reusable k-cup, I am very likely to be swayed.
We have one at work, and the people there seem to like it. I tried using the cocoa pods and the result was unacceptably weak and watery. My wife (who is the coffee aficionado) says the expensive K-cups produce decent coffee but at home she grinds her own (burr grinder) and uses an Aeropress to make her brew.
We even home roasted green coffee beans once, but although she liked the resulting coffee she decided its too much work.

@Mehsturbator I do not own one for the same reason, the amount of waste is just too much for me.
@ConAndLibrarian Time can also be wasted. My time is a non-renewable resource.
@ConAndLibrarian @Mehsturbator
Agreed, would not buy.
Adding my ‘nay’ vote to the pile, also due to the absurd, senseless waste.
@Mehsturbator

I want one. In particular the k50. The ability to have a water tank is the most desirable part. I would like. K50 or similar for 50 dollars

Might be nice to have one when company comes. No one in my house drinks coffee. But want something small, like as small as they come.

@narfcake I used to have one of those. Made good coffee, but a pain in the ass to clean if I didn’t do it right away.
Wouldn’t use the K-cup coffee maker. Would use the heck out of an electric water kettle though. More versatile. Cheaper. Less waste.
@huja I used my electric kettle pretty much daily back when I was in an apartment. @huja I use my Sunbeam hot shot daily. I love it. My last one worked for years until my kid tried to boil milk in it.
@huja I definitely have been hunting for a kettle, trying to figure out the magic price to make it compelling though
