Jan 15, 2018 ship of the day
16Today we are focusing on the container ships that transport all of our meh goods into and out of the country. The expansion of the Panama canal has led to some really huge container ships. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OOCL_Hong_Kong
The largest ever is the OOCL Hong Kong.

Cool!
I thought some of the new container ships were now too large for the current canal?
Just to get in front of @narfcake with some charming silliness I have no claim to:
Hey, @narf. Pls forgive?
@f00l No need to apologize. Posting Animaniacs clips is equal opportunity and highly encouraged.
Track your ships here…pretty cool https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:4910459/mmsi:477333500/imo:9776171/vessel:OOCL_HONG_KONG
@daveinwarsh oops.
@RiotDemon it’s not supposed to look like that?
@daveinwarsh Not what’s usually meant by a ship’s fantail.
@daveinwarsh Please no waves, please no waves…
I got to tour one once. My dad was working on something for the engine and they let us have a peek. I felt so tiny on that ship.
This goat has made the tenure for all future goats that much harder. I blame this goat for being too excellent with the boats of the day, raising the expectations of a meh population and educating the mehpopulace without us really noticing.
I am not sure how I feel about my birthday being marked by something so pedestrian as a cargo ship.
@jbartus how do you think your birthday presents arrive? Also it is the biggest ever.
@jbartus happy birthday to you happy birthday dear jbartus happy birthday to you
/giphy happy birthday
@jbartus Happy Birthday pedestrian!
@CaptAmehrican touché et merci.
@therealjrn thanks!
@jbartus
Happy Birthday, Pats fan!
What wine/port/bubbly are you saving in case they are in another Superbowl?
@f00l oh, I think Wellington’s Victory Reserve would be quite fitting for that occasion, don’t you think?
@jbartus Happy Birthday! It is a very colorful ship, so pretty, looks like a bday cake!
@Calabama thanks
I hope you do a major transatlantic cruise ship at some point. Perhaps the SS Normandie?
I got to tour the bowels of the now retired QE2 once. Those great luxury ships are something to behold.
But I’m not asking for hints or giving directions. I love the surprise.
I mean, you could also go in the direction of Thor Heyerdahl’s experimental recreations of primitive prehistoric vessels capable of crossing the Atlantic and Pacific. (He proved it, by building them and crossing the oceans in them.)
Or a thousand other directions! You have so much to choose from.
If you wanted to keep these daily boat topics going and be Feb 2018 (G)Boat also, I’d be thrilled!
The most powerful engines in the world move these boats. The Wärtsila RTA96C is the largest. There’s 60 steps from the ground to the top of the crankcase, the pistons could be used as elevators, and it produces more than 100,000 horsepower!
