Jan 13 2018 boat of the day
16Today we are honoring the liberty ships of ww2 and those who sailed and built them. During ww2 over 2700 liberty ships were built to bring supplies and people back and forth to the war in Europe. They were staffed by civilian merchant mariners not navy or coast guard. These were huge targets and the mariners on the liberty ships has some of the highest death rates despite not getting any of the benefits.
Today there are only two remaining liberty ships in the USA and only one that can move. The John W Brown can still and does still go on voyages under her own power (triple expansion steam engine)

I just wanted to tell you I am really enjoying the Ships/Boats/Yachts/Subs/Sailing Vessels of the Day and I don’t even know why. I don’t sail nor have been on a cruise (does a commuting ferry count?)
@looseneck It’s a boat. It counts.
@looseneck boats are good things. Plus is it January we all need something nautical and interesting.
@CaptAmehrican
Are going with a ferry for one of the Jan days?
(Don’t hint or spoil it. But I am hoping.)
(So much to choose from. Everything from oil supertankers and aircraft carriers to canoes and kayaks.)
@f00l AND “TALL SHIPS”!!! Do not forget tall ships.
@Kidsandliz
I figured there was no way tall ships would be left out.
One of my grandfathers sailed something or other of that sort once. Navy. He had various naval assignments and had been around the world before he was 20.
Sometime around 1900. He was a large kid, barely past the age of elementary school. But he lied about his age, and they took him on.
The personal chest he had of all his belongings while onboard was about 10"x14"x20".
@f00l I have a chest not a heck of a lot bigger than that that my grandmother used for a summer in Europe. Of course I spent a year living out of a backpack when worked in the UK which doesn’t hold all that much either…much easier though to be able to carry with you more stuff.
Spent an hour online learning about the John Brown.
Forgot to order todays item. Saved Money
Thank you!!!
