It's going to be cold and rainy this weekend, what do?
6All weekend is going to be pretty cold and rainy. My wife is going shopping with her mom which leaves me with the 4 yr old. I was thinking of hitting up the library and maybe the train museum. I was also considering getting a birdhouse kit and putting something together with my little dude. Anyone here have a favorite rainy day activity?

Depending on how cold, dress up warmly between the rain and make paper boats and float them down the street (or in the case of what I did with my kid, the culvert that they channeled the small stream through near our house). We are getting 5" on, I think, Saturday so likely I could send boats down the parkinglot… not to mention it will flood around here again as when it did it last time we had a bit less than that.
@Kidsandliz
Just ordered this today. No boat floating for me.
You have a train museum? I want to come.
@sammydog01 https://durhammuseum.org
@show_the_maw Kind of short on trains for a train museum. I like the slice and bake cookie idea.
@sammydog01 I wish I had some pictures to share. Downstairs they have a streetcar and a 4 car train to walk through. It had a Pullman and a dining car and a few sleepers. There’s also a fun kid area he can explore they change up with every exhibit.
Rainy days make me want to sleep, especially if thundering.
We aren’t expecting rain, of course, but it’s going to be unusually cold tomorrow. I’ll be board gaming for National Tabletop Game Day.
Library, and then home to make Slice & Bake cookies. You slice, he arranges on cookie sheet. If you have cookie sprinkles, let him decorate. Bake, eat, read.
I highly recommend The Stinky Cheese Man And Other Fairly Stupid Tales, or The TRUE Story Of The 3 Little Pigs by A.Wolf as told to Jon Scieszka.
@LaVikinga We loved Skippyjon Jones.
If you like woodworking projects Lowes and Home Depot both had freebie kids crafts on Saturdays (one was once a month and one was twice). They were a lot of fun and he (she) is a good age.
@sammydog01 we’ve done that a few times. It gets really loud with 90 kids all hammering at once. I’m much more inclined to make things at home these days.
How about make/buy a welcome to the family baby present? Be prepared to buy two, if you take a 4 yo shopping
@mikibell that sounds like fun. He bought baby brother a Batman onesy and painted a piggy bank for him. But I bet he’d love to pick out some binkys and books for baby brother.
@show_the_maw baby brewed yet???
@mikibell yep!! Franklin Robert screamed into this world at 11:18am on May 1st. I’m in love with him.
@mikibell
@show_the_maw congratulations…he is precious! If you need a babysitter…let me know… I still have that rock back and forth sway going on…
@mikibell rock back and forth away with subtle bouncing.
Go to an animal shelter and play with the animals
Besides making paper boats and floating them down the street, drainage ditch, etc. you can also fill the bathtub, put in a bunch of paper boats and then try to sink them, tip them over or make them run into another boat (you can mark them as your team or his team) using a squirt gun (we have done this - bathroom can get a bit wet, might as well wear swim suits and move out of their first anything you won’t want to have to dry off, towels on the floor help with cleanup). Easiest to fill the squirt gun either out of the bathtub or the sink filled with water… Variation: float some plastic bowls and then try to throw ping pong balls into the bowls. If he is good at it then modify the rules or add challenges like how fast can you get one ball in each bowl, can you have more balls in the bowls than in the water, move the “line” back…
@Kidsandliz oh man. This kid is a deadeye with squirt guns. It would be a challenge for me to beat him.
Make a pot of kapusta
@cranky1950 Mmmmmm. Savory kapusta.
@ruouttaurmind one of my favorite ucky day foods
Cold and rainy is an excellent time for baking! Bake 6 dozen cranberry oatmeal cookies and send them to the Galactic Goat!
Come install sprinklers with me? It’s sunny here!
