I was reading about the movie on reddit. Apparently there’s a shitload of people griping about cultural appropriation. I don’t really understand why people are mad that the movie is set in Japan. People are also angry that the Japanese words don’t have subtitles… even though most of it is translated in different ways.
I’m so confused. Can’t people just appreciate a movie anymore?
@RiotDemon I couldn’t agree more. Every movie has to be deconstructed, torn down, and subjected to a microscopic review of every element. I don’t even read reviews before I see a film. I want to view it for what it is, uncolored by the perceptions, desires and agendas of others.
@moondrake@RiotDemon I was planning on going to see I Feel Pretty because it looked fun. The review bitched about it because Amy Schumer isn’t really ugly enough or fat enough and the message gets diluted. I just wanted to see something funny.
@RiotDemon@sammydog01 I did feel that way about Amy Schumer’s casting just because it highlights our grossly distorted views on beauty and body type when someone who looks like her is supposed to be ugly and fat. I’m still going to see the movie and enjoy it on its own merit, which I’m assuming actually is that if you aren’t Barbie you are still deserving of self esteem and love (buried in a lot of sit-com).
@fjp999@RiotDemon Great article. It’s very cool that the Japanese title also relates to a Japanese myth, they managed a double hitter there with the pun in English and the myth in Japan.
I have not.
I was going to a movie with my friend- we had a choice of Isle of Dogs or Blockers. I chose Blockers because Isle of Dogs sounded sad. Was it sad?
@sammydog01 No. A little here and there, but overall, no.
@sammydog01 it wasn’t really a laugh out loud comedy either. There was a point I think I had some tears in my eyes, but not much.
It was great, I loved it. Definitely a unique piece of work.
Are there dogs in this?
@PlacidPenguin Stop motion dogs.
Been there. The Island Gardens is lovely.
@ruouttaurmind Came in to say the same thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Dogs
@Pavlov
Lunch and a pint at the Ferry House, off to the Gardens for a stroll and a kip. Among the best afternoons I’ve had the pleasure of.
I love dogs, too! I was standing in line, about to buy a ticket, when I realized the title is a pun.
@UncleVinny I was telling someone to watch the preview a couple of weeks before it came out and when I said the name I heard the pun.

@moondrake I don’t read any reviews until afterwards.
I’m still going to see it, probably. @sammydog01
@RiotDemon I really enjoyed this piece written by a Japanese writer now living in NYC.

(I don’t think the author had anything to do with the title of the piece)

@moondrake I think she’s pretty average looking. It’s a start.
I love Wes Anderson’s films. I should see this in the theater…
