Valentines Day is a “Hallmark” day so I refuse to officially acknowledge it as a “real” holiday.
However, to avoid consternation, I get her a couple dozen orange-red (her fav) roses a day or so before that day. And mark the date-proximity a pure coincidence.
I also don’t like to support Hallmark holidays. But we did get take-out from the new Hawaiian place in town. An ahi bowl and a kalua pork bowl. But, in a nod toward the sincere aspect of professing our love, we shared their valentine-special chocolate mousse with strawberries.
I tell him I don’t want anything, seriously, so he went out anyway and got me a potted plant, which we both know I’ll likely kill by summer, because he knows I hate getting jewelry (superficial and overpriced), can’t eat chocolate (caffeine sensitivity so get shortness of breath and migraines) and prefer plants to cut flowers since the cut flowers will definitely die but I always hold out hope on keeping plants alive.
He’s the best.
@mollama I bought the missus a mushroom growing kit. I’ll be the one to maintain it i’m sure, but she really liked it. (Obviously she’s not a big jewelry fan, we have lots of flowers around the house all the time, and she is currently dieting, so candy was out. The other ahem… gift… was for both of us!)
As long as he doesn’t say valentimes, he doesn’t have to give me squat. He gave me flowers once when we were dating and let it slip later what they cost. I was completely appalled. I told him this year, if he buys me anything, make it an extra house or tractor payment so we can get that crap paid off!!!
I too loathe Hallmark and all their Happy 45th Valentine’s Day Second Cousin! cards. However there ARE some fun cardmakers out there - I still get a kick out of Boynton and the cranky lady, and not to be Mr Spam or anything but a certain Trader carries fairly decent holiday cards for $0.99 each (though I have to say they’re not as good as they used to be.) On the stated topic, btw, their Valentine’s one was just as appreciated as the candy and the seafood dinner mentioned in a prior thread.
There is no ‘Gift’.
Flowers, dark chocolate and a Valentines card that I underline all the ‘mushy-looking’ words is good.
Well, also a nice dinner out if she wants.
It’s not that hard and doesn’t habe to cost a fortune. I got $4 bouquet of Aldi flowers ftw! Not those overpriced $12.99 roses from Aldi’s but the same bouquet that’s always $4 bucks! Also got her a popcorn machine she found used on Facebook Marketplace. Saving money ftw. Then went out to a fancy pizza place on a gift card from Xmas for some heart shaped pizza.
My husband unexpectedly passed a few months ago but he was the best at Valentines and romance. Our first one, I came in from work and the lights were dim, The fireplace was roaring, he had moved a small table into the living room in front of the fireplace. Candles and a vase of roses on the table and rose petals, chocolate and candy hearts sprinkled all over the table. A bottle of wine and 2 beautiful place settings. Beautiful. He had made Tarragon chicken and (don’t really remember the sides). After dinner was a pampered bath with warmed towels and a massage and the rest is private. The really nice thing is, it wasn’t a one time thing. He would still do the same thing 20 yrs later.
@seeds is really good at giving me gifts and I’m a tricky person to gift. He knows that the way to a girl’s heart is whiskey and rare books.
And I liked the fancy pen and paper, too!
@PolkSaladAnnie my magic bean!
Meh sucked with Valentine’s Day this year. As well you know.
When you store your batteries in the refrigerator, every time you open it it’s like getting a gift. Look! Batteries!! Fresh batteries!!!

@shahnm Been happily married for 27 years, thank you. How about you?
Tip for flower happiness: buy them randomly and regularly… without needing a “holiday” reminder.
@RedOak 20 years and counting. And +1 on the flower strategy!!

Aside from V-day being a ridiculous “holiday” neither of us is the romantic type so it’s just another day.
These posts are crazy. All holidays are nonsense and arbitrary, but it’s fun to get excited about something.
@Seeds I TOTALLY AGREE!! WOOHOO!!! YES YESS YESSS!!!

What if I have a man, but am also a man? /giphy faux outrage
@Fen_Star there is nothing excluding you from this poll then.
@Fen_Star …then congrats on having someone to share the holiday with!
I got 50$ and an happy Valentine’s day well come on being a man isn’t an excuse lol

Oh, good reminder, i need to go water the plant.
Do polls on plants every few days please, so i remember to check on it.

It has been 4 days, no poll with plants and I am only now remembering to check on it. Shame on you Meh, that plant’s death will be on your head.
@mollama water your plants
@Seeds thank you ☺
Valentine’s gifts? You mean “Help Hallmark Flatten Their Sales Curve Day”?

I took off work and drove 4 hours to surprise her at school, but I didn’t get her a gift.

I don’t have a man because I have a girlfriend and am also not a man myself so like, awkward
@kittykata I think the stereotype is that women are better at gifting, so the assumption is that you’re both set.
(But yeah, should have thrown options for everyone in the mix. Sorry about that.)
A card for every occasion!
@aetris
@kittykata Why this poll made me cringe immediately & deeply…
My birthday is the 10th, and he does go all out then. But Valentine’s things are scarce and far between
Is a new vacuum a good gift ?
@meh427 I enjoyed my vacuum as a housewarming gift. I wouldn’t want one for a birthday or lovey dovey gift.
@meh427 Depends on who is going to use it.
