Is it time yet for another (unofficial) mehrican exchange (#7)?
7So I got this email on the mehricanexchange6 yahoo email where someone more than broadly hinted (ahem you know who you are - I will nominate you to be goat for suggesting this) that it was time for another exchange. Say what? The last one got me goated.
Due to all the holidays coming up we’d have to do it fairly quickly with a proposed early December mail out. Or do it in January…
Anyway what are people’s opinions on the subject?

@Mehrocco_Mole Easy solution to that - get a priority mail box and pay for the postage now, then set it aside until the momentous moment when you fill it and mail it.

@ruouttaurmind @jbartus if the interest isn’t there then maybe we just don’t do it. We had 44 who signed up last time, of which one was excluded due to giving a fake email and fake user name and three that ripped people off (eg got but did not send). We had 7 who did more than one box and a couple (3 or 4?) volunteer to help if people were ripped off. No idea if that number is a decline from previous times.
@jbartus I think (just guesses here) the community issue is partly due to a decline in active direction meh is giving to the community. JonT used to run give aways, was pretty active, meh would pull jokes (eg sharpie stuff etc. that people would post about, random packages of silliness, fuku/o pallets of craziness, etc.), the fuko’s are far lamer now being a bag, maybe a sticker or other meh branded item and then mostly dollar store style items (or crap they bought early on that is tons left like those weird family photo books) for nearly everyone. There are fewer bonanzas or really conversation creating items, etc. included.
They are selling more crap crap that is broken (my last two orders had broken items - broken is OK for a fuko but not for other purchases - of course customer service reliably fixes the proble - but that stuff is broken to begin with is still a decline from the past) which decreases my interest in buying (thus checking - although habits do die hard) due to the increased risk and I don’t want to have to open clamshelled stuff to test is since 99% of what I buy is to give as a present to someone specific on my birthday and christmas list.
All that used to happen helped shape the community in ways that isn’t happening as much or at all these days. It may be that now that the business is built up in other ways they don’t care as much about the meh forum corner of the world because maybe we are not as much value to them as we perhaps were (eg word of mouth issue)? Or?
I mean there are still a variety of threads, but the variety of people participating seems more limited to me. Of course I could be dead wrong about all of this.

@Kidsandliz honestly I can’t help feeling like Meh has become a clearing house for things that aren’t selling fast enough on Morningsave or were bought in grossly higher quantities than they should have been. We’ve seen the stupid breathalyzer things roughly a dozen times I feel like. Those power tab single use power bank things are another example.
On the rare occasion we get good items here I can’t help feeling like they’re token quantities offered here to keep our interest while the bulk volume gets listed at a greater price on Morningsave. A great case in point of this would be monitors sold here recently which I believe sold out and definitely sold out of the most popular versions here but are all in stock right now on Morningsave.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t begrudge the Mediocre guys making money and if Morningsave is the goose that lays the golden egg they should keep after it. I guess I just feel like Meh used to be something special and now it’s an afterthought. It’s sad to see it going through what feels like a slow agonizing death, especially when the apparent successor has, to me, such a clumsy hard to use shopping interface. I get that partnering with these brands to offer ‘curated’ shopping experiences is the model for Morningsave but actually trying to look at what all is available when I care nothing for the brands, just the deals, is painfully slow. At least on Woot I can go look at specific product categories.
@jbartus I agree that the morningsave page/interface is a royal, nearly random PITA. I also hate how when you click on a category box everything else moves and with the photos switching around it is hard to tell where you have even been. I gave up and for the most part just don’t go there anymore.
I like many of the people on the forum here but with the slow drop off it does make me, like you, wonder how much longer it will last before doing a death morph into what the pitiful forum is like over on morningsave. Be sad if that happens.
