It’s been 40s for most of the week here in Dallas thanks to that cold front moving through. Luckily we’ve avoided any snow or ice. I decided to put the heat on a few days ago to combat the chill.
@macromeh Our house is built on a slab. With no basement, upstairs is usually about 8 degrees warmer than downstairs. I have no choice but to crank up the a/c to keep it bearable.
I usually don’t. The wife breaks before I do. I’m loving this weather. This week I wore both a long-sleeved shirt and sweats on trips out of the house (work and the dentist). And what’s wrong with snow and ice, goddamnit? We usually travel to Colorado for Thanksgiving (typically I take three weeks and completely unplug). That won’t be happening this year. I’ll be quite pleased if we get some genuine snow around these parts (Dallas, like you).
I fire it up the first really cold night for about an hour which came early this year. A month or two back. To test it just in case. It’s a comfortable 55 inside and 33 out. Still be a while before it needs to kick in regularly.
@RedOak lol. We still had a bimetal dial no one but dad touch it thermostat when I was a kid. I would not be surprised if it were still there. I would def lock the current one from the kids if I had any… But some compromise could be made.
@unksol yah, I’ve threatened to put a lock box around it. But wouldn’t ever do that.
Especially since I can simply query Alexa from anywhere in the house or garage what the setting is and change it as well. Or via the app away from home.
@RedOak lol I just meant my thermostat allows me to disable the buttons via my phone. But that can just get you yelled at if not coordinated. Good fit kids fiddling… Bad if you don’t tell your wife

you start with meat (if you want meat) and see what’s in the frig for vegies. add pasta/rice/barley/potatoes for starch. and seasonings - salt/pepper/something from bill the hippy.
serve with bread if you like, salad if you don’t
cook a week of lunches in the slow cooker of your choice.
@unksol
I pretty much do the stone soup routine or i go traditional. I have this interesting mix I bought early on in the pandemic, you know when rice and stuff was hard to get. It has rice and barley and radish seeds in it.
Last time I made beef soup, with beef cut into very small chunks by the store and in the mark down part of the case. I added the traditional veggies to it - carrots, celery, onions - and an entire head of garlic and some small potatoes halved. And this rice/barley mixture (I’ll try to find it and post it if I can) Oh and frozen peas. I actually tried the English peas (fresh) from TJ’s once and will go frozen.
Once I was really lazy but wanted soup and used frozen everything and store made rotisserie chicken. It was okay, but not as good as it could be.
I have done various cabbages, leeks, brocoli added to it. Might try chicken and cauliflower (the riced one) with paramecium cheese. I will see if i can hunt that recipe base down. i found it one year looking for something that used potatoes and chicken and rosemary.
Yesterday took the battery out of the smoke detector (burning dust) and turned it on. Very happy cats. They all lined up on top of it (motel style AC/Heater). There might have been an inch here or there that the heat actually escaped to the rest of the apt.
When it’s under 68 in the house. Brrrr.
Thermostat is set on auto at 68. A/C or heat do their own thing depending.
@cinoclav Same, except I set the upper limit of the range (for A/C) at 74F. 68F in the house is too cool for me in the summer.

When the refrigerator is warmer than the outside temperature.
All I think about when I hear “it is time” or “my time has come”
When my batteries start venturing forth from the fridge…
@shahnm Ah, the first AAs of autumn!
@macromeh I love when they start getting that coppery-top color…
NYC law requires that landlords provide heat to apt. dwellers after October 1st.

@joelmw I’m im Dallas, too. I’d LOVE some snow!!
My pecan trees say it might happen. TONS of pecans this year!

If it were solely my call, after several days at 65°F, inside.
Unfortunately, the screams from others in our home trigger heat mode after a couple consistent days of indoor temps around 69°.
@RedOak tell them to put on a sweat shirt they’ll get used to it lol.
Unless the spouse is involved in the complaints… Although… you could pretend it’s broke till they adjust… Probably a bad idea lol
@unksol Haha, yah, no. I’d have a mutiny on my hands.

My heat went on last night for the first time

Today it’s 79. Tomorrow will be 81+. AC is still needed. It’s too hot to make soup.
@OldCatLady
It’s never too hot to make soup
@Cerridwyn then where are the recipes?
@unksol
who uses a recipe?
you start with meat (if you want meat) and see what’s in the frig for vegies. add pasta/rice/barley/potatoes for starch. and seasonings - salt/pepper/something from bill the hippy.
serve with bread if you like, salad if you don’t
cook a week of lunches in the slow cooker of your choice.
easy peasy
now, if you want a heavier creamy soup - meh
@Cerridwyn I just dump a whole chicken in the crock pot for a few hours…
pull it and toss in the hard vegetables for a few more. Maybe some rice.
Let the chicken cool so I can pick it and toss most of the meat back in. Maybe keep the breasts to make chicken salad sandwiches.
Might throw some pasta in toward the end if no rice. Or mix in a bag of frozen peas or corn… Or half a head of diced cabbage. Etc
Cauliflower soup is nice and doesn’t need the cream but I extremely rarely do that
Obviously some seasoning at various stages
Just wondered if you had a really good one lol.

It’s yummy either way and now I want some, LOL
@unksol

Just installed a fancypants Nest thermostat today, so now. I’m in Seattle area, it’s been 55/35, so heat has already been on the last couple weeks.
It’s thyme.
