Ooh, I can’t wait!
Rinse repeat
Arrived today. Two snow globes that broke somewhere along the way so just a box of broken glass
@raidergoalie31 Oh no!
@raidergoalie31 You’re assuming they weren’t broken when they were packed.
@raidergoalie31 Hope you at least got a bag. If not contact support.
Same old, same old. HA-HA SUCKERS!!
/giphy ha-ha suckers
I like that new bag, I wasn’t spending $50 for the bag though. As my last 4 irks have been duds.
Official meh exchange post coming tomorrow w/ link to sign up-
How do I make it a broadcast (so it’s in a box at the top and stays there)?
@Star2236 maybe tag @extramedium? Make sure you have the word “unofficial” in the title of the exchange though since it is not sponsored by meh. I forgot one year and people made sure I knew I screwed up.
@Star2236 Any of the mods can make it a broadcast.
only one phone loop? wonder where the other 11 went…
@jchizmar I’m not going to open the box, I have this terrible suspicion that it’s a portal into the dimension of the rest of them.
@jchizmar @werehatrack Oh I have plenty of pink phone loops. I can send you some if you feel slighted. I got a big pile of them in a recent irk.
@jchizmar @Kidsandliz AAAAAUGH! NO! I’m going to need a bigger box if any more show up. And if one of the boxes of them really is the portal to the phone ring dimension, opening it could be a really bad move. I suspect that’s what happened back in the warehouse, and they’re still trying to plug it.
@jchizmar @werehatrack I’ll sneak some into that t-shirt you want that I got in the last irk.
Bummer! I was SO tempted purchase one of those coats. I’m certainly not an xtra small, but my daughter is. I have several places locally who enjoy the donations I have given them from the IRK’s that do not work for my family and friends. I’m happy to hear that other ppl donate too
@pattyrusk1 love your red bag!
@pattyrusk1 I have 2 of those coats that came in Irks last year! Too big for me, but if you’re interested, let me know and I’ll check on the exact size and color, etc. I was going to donate them to a Navaho reservation that I gave things to the previous year, but the woman arranging deliveries stopped doing it and moved away.
@Kyeh @pattyrusk1 I wear a 12 or 14 depending on the cut, usually translates to L, sometimes XL. My big problem is sleeve length. But as I’ve got a really nice winter coat that I snagged on sale at Land’s End year before last, I’m in good shape in that area. If the Dineh need them, I’m happy to have yours go to them if a way can be found.
Our long national nightmare of instant regret is over!
Got mine yesterday.
2-mascara
1-irk bag
1- tracker
1-2xl meh shirt, black
1- red cuisenart coffee maker.
Not bad, son got the shirt. Daughter wants the mascara. The bag was added to the reusable bag stash. Tracker is useless. And I have no need of a coffee maker at the moment, but it will find a home.
@remo28 Such a beautiful RED coffee maker! I’m envious.
@remo28 We shall see if yours is one of the bonanza ones or not. Hopefully lots of people will get decent ones to make up for the really crappy ones most got recently.
@remo28 Nice!
@remo28 Oooh… I could use a coffee maker, so I probably won’t get one!
A few useful things this time.
Red irk bag
Thigh slimmer
Touch less soap dispenser
Useless mac book case
12 Useless trackers
Useful wooden spatula
@ironcheftoni I got one of those soap dispensers and my wife did what she so often does when things arrive in her “area” (the kitchen or either bathroom): She hid it so it has never been seen again! I thought it was pretty cool, but what are you gonna do?
@ironcheftoni @Kyser_Soze I bought a few for hand sanitizer, and look! More hand sanitizer!
Got mine, sorry for the lack of pictures.
Two Hand Sanitizers
3 Trackr
One bamboo phone valet
One travel light-up makeup mirror
One Bushwick Kitchen gift box (Hot Honey, Sriracha, Hot Syrup, towel of questionable longevity)
One Malibu Sky Clutch bag
nearly all of it will be going to a valentines gift exchange at the office, except the trackr (which will be harvested for the probably dead coin cell batteries) and maybe the makeup mirror.
Just got mine.
Just about went full hulk when I saw the case of 12 trackRs. Didn’t bother putting them in the photo. Also got more expired hand sanitizer, two light up compact mirrors, a pair of pajama pants size large, a large basket type thingie and an IRK bag in an eye-bleedingly hideous color scheme.
@Pony your comment about the bag being eye-bleedingly hideous cracked me up, partially because I love it, very Christmasy. The pants are cool too, although I do have a bias with green being my favorite color. Enjoy your haul!
@Pony
I actually need a basket like that.
@Star2236 Who doesn’t? I have to decide which of several things I will use it for. The cats tried to claim it, but I’ll fight them on this one.
Mine arrived today!
A set of Luminara flameless candles
A plain black tee
2 bottles of hand sanitizer
1 MacBook pro hardshell case
And …
A box of 30 TrackR Pixel Bluetooth locators! At first I was bummed about these because the app was discontinued back in 2021, BUT they are compatible with the free SwiftFinder app! I immediately put on the living room Roku remote that always gets lost. It worked! Very happy!!
Everyone knows the TrackRs are still useable right?
@bemused Only if you have the right kind of phone.
@bemused Barely. I went through the two dozen I’ve gotten in the last month, and most must have burned themselves out when they drained their 3v batteries down to 0.5v. Replacing those batteries just resulted in them making a horrible squeal of death.
Of 24, I tested ten and got three that actually work at all. And of three, none react to being paired with; one app says “yep, found it!” but doesn’t tell me where or make it chirp, so…
Usable is a bit of a stretch.
1 red and green irk bag
1 box of trackrs
2 bottles of hand sanitizer
1 set of king size sheets
1 set of thermal underwear in xl, which is actually my size
1 set of those Antoni Barcelona shot glasses in black. two glasses total.
the shot glasses are pretty cool. the sheets aren’t bad but nobody i know has a king. and its freezing here, so the thermal underwear is pretty nice. this is a marked improvement from the past 3 or 4 i’ve received.
@omally
Put the king sheets in the your box for the meh exchange, if your doing it. All I know is people that have king beds.
@omally If you know how to do hospital corners, or have sheet holders, a king can fit any size.
When the Trackrs first made an appearance I somehow managed to avoid them for what seemed like eons! With the lestest IRK I have more than made up for that as I now have something like 100 of them.
That said, my IRK contained:
Box of 12 Trackrs
Red & green IRK bag, which I have been hoping for because I LOVE it!
2 bottles expired sanitizer
XL sweatpants that will fit hubby
2 pack Antoni Barcelona shot glasses in black, which I wanted but did not need so never actually bought them.
All-in-all, totally satisfied customer.
Got mine today.
Common items (mostly landfill)
1 Box of tracker
2 hand sanitizer
1 MacBook case
Useful item
1 Malibu sky bag set (clutch, crossbag, satchel)
1 red and green IRK bag
@NoIRK
Post a pic of the bag set. I love a good purse, clutch and you can never have too many.
1 green and red bag
1 fitboxr (have to look this up - it’s some sort of harness/fitness thing)
1 digital food scale (I almost bought one the other day)
2 gel hand sanitizers
1 case of trackrs
I would sy it’s a 6.5/10 IRK
Thanks Meh
After looking more closely at these items, I’m upping my rating to 7/10.
I found more info on the Fitboxr
@mbersiam I dunno, I think that’d drop it to 5.5 for me!
@brainmist I have a daughter with a medical concern the scale will help. I didn’t realize all the functionality it had.
The fitboxr is definitely overpriced in that video… but all the parts are there and it’s a possible re-sale or re-gift item
@mbersiam The scale sounds pretty cool!
@mbersiam
I’d probably actually use that fitboxr, is it a small ( if you’re selling it)? I have horrible nerve damage on my left side from a work injury and something like that would help. Along with the posture corrector, my left shoulder protrudes and looks deformed from shoulder surgery from me protecting it to much as it healed. I should lift the dumbbells I ordered but then I have to clean out another room to make it my work out room and that’s to much cleaning lol
@Star2236 It is a red, which I believe translates to a large.
@mbersiam
Yup, blue is the small and one I’m looking for
@mbersiam @Star2236
I had that same scale. Used it to make sourdough bread mostly. While it has a lot of nice features, I found it very frustrating to use because it ate batteries and didn’t seem to respond to the touch buttons as well as I would have liked to. It was one of the options that is available to me from my Medicare advantage plan, so I wasn’t out of pocket much. I have since replaced it with one I like much better that is usb-c rechargeable and works great.
Thank you, Meh! & SideDeal…
@tahshar
Nice stuff!
Horror of all horrors. While wintering here in CA this year we are renting an apartment. They have a mail room using the Luxer lockers that packages are put in and you are texted a code.
Well, today mine arrived. After it was delivered, someone broke the door handle to the mailroom, nobody can get in. Not til tomorrow night.
The wait continues.
@Dakini I sympathize.
FedEx has my IRK.
They just dropped off a bunch of boxes of print material in a melting snowdrift (I managed to rescue before anything was damaged, I think) and we’ve had some drama involving my badly neglected alley in the past.
So we’ll see when I get it!
@brainmist I got it today…it wasn’t terrible. I didn’t get a photo but I will post the contents
I received:
1- Red Bag(Yay!)
2- Hand Sanitizers(Donating)
1-MacBook Pro Case(Donating)
1- Grey Purse(Donating)
1-Emergency Car Jump Start (Husband Likes!)
@pattyrusk1 if it was the tacklife one it went for $40-$50, can’t remember but good pickup either way
@pattyrusk1 @sproinky Yeah, I bought one of those because it seemed pretty damn handy.
@brainmist @pattyrusk1 @sproinky I’ve used ours 3 times now and it works great! Much better than jumper cables.
@sproinky yes. It’s Tracklife
@brainmist @sproinky @ybmuG Thank you! I will let my husband know
@pattyrusk1 If he finds it annoying to repack all of the fiddly bits inside that netting on one half of the case, my suggestion is to just cut the netting out and make sure to open the unit with that side down. This has saved me a ton of time. It was possible to get a larger case for a while, but those are gone now.
@pattyrusk1 @werehatrack Oorrrrrr… take a useless MacBook case , add velcro, and velcro the bits in there!
FedEx has my IRK.
We have had snow.
So maybe I’ll receive it in the eventual thaw?
I received the bag of course and…
3 TrackRs. Is it worth trying to use these things?
3 pairs of ladies underwear? Swim bottoms? They seem to be made of a fabric that should not be used for clothing. One black, one orange-ish and one giraffe meets flowerbed.
A ceramic tea pot with steel infuser my sister may like.
A Land Speeder Garage T-shirt which will likely fit if I lose a few pounds.
A string of solar heart string lights that does not seem to work.
All in all, not the worst of Meh.
@ponagathos In my experience, the solar lights need to charge for at least an hour when first received.
@ponagathos The trackers work fine in my experience, and have helped me find my keys on several occasions already! The batteries are going to need to be replaced eventually, because they’ve been sitting around on the shelf for years. But overall I really can’t complain.
@werehatrack You are right. I did leave them out yesterday to see if that was the case. Tried them and they are working now.
@godainobaka Thanks. I dump my pockets into a valet and never have a problem with things getting lost. But mom always seems to be losing something. I will likely donate to her if I can summon the courage to teach her to use them.
@ponagathos your IRK is almost identical to mine. The “granny panties” are size 3x, so they are not usable in this household. The shirt is one of the D&D dice ones…I like it but it’s too big (XXL). The solar heart lights are actually strung across the mantle now, so that might be the only usable (for us) item in this IRK. Mine also had a small (10”) easel (used for displaying art I guess??).
@TimW Oh, I had the easel as well. I forgot about it.
You have to remove the protective plastic shield on the solar sensor and also turn on the lights. I didn’t think mine worked for a while.
3 TrackR Pixels (try them with the SwiftFinder Android app)
2 hand sanitizer bottles
1 blanket
1 3 in 1 wireless charger for phone, ear buds, and watch
1 incase brand MacBook Pro case (which perfectly fits my MacBook Pro!) $59.99 on Amazon
1 IRK bag
10/10 based on the charger and case, as I was considering buying both anyway. Everything else is a bonus.
@Vander2057 MacBook Pro owner for the win!!!
@Vander2057 You want a few more of these? I have several. One pink, one black.
@Kidsandliz I might. Would you please post a picture of the packages or a link? I’m curious to know if they are the same as the one I got.
@Vander2057 OK. Remind me if I forget. I will have to find the pink one.
@Kidsandliz @Vander2057 This is a pink one, still in the package.
I’ve had several; I think this is the only one currently awaiting donation.
@Kidsandliz @werehatrack Thank you for the offer, but I’m good with the one I got.
@Vander2057 so the pink one is this one above, here is the black one:
@Kidsandliz @Vander2057 I also have many.
So many.
Mostly gray, I think.
Got mine today. Trackers, gel sanitizer, sented candle, makeup pallet, lipstick, led work light, r/c bumper cars and irk bag! Meh but at least no car chargers. Not terrible but nothing I can use. I can’t wait until all the gel, car chargers and trackers are gone. What’s the next regrettable item gonna be?
@braveit1 Did you take the candle out of the box? I got one and it’s in a beautiful hand blown glass.
@braveit1 I have one of those worklights, and like it quite a bit.
@sammydog01 i googled it. Is there a smaller box inside? Might gift it.
@brainmist ive got a bunch of similar lights from previous sales, including the l.e.d. “flares”
@braveit1 Yes. I assume that’s why it wasn’t smashed to bits. It smells nice. Also, at least for mine, the candle slips right out if you just want the glass.
I will never again predict the demise of the trackrs.
@OnionSoup smart move. I just got 4 more. Don’t predict the demise of expired hand sanitizer either. I got two of those.
Got mine, and…
A festive red and green IRK bag
2 bottles of hand sanitizer (hey, cool. The stuff really doesn’t go bad. It’ll get used)
3 more trackrs (meh…as many of the things as I already have, you think I’m gonna get upset by a lousy THREE more?)
Another casery cell phone stand.
A somewhat attractive piece of textile, the purpose of which I am completely uncertain. (Both donate)
A 5 and 1/2 quart Cuisinart chef’s classic stainless steel multipurpose pan with glass cover!.(Very nice. $30 on Amazon, and I love my Cuisinart stainless, so I don’t imagine I’m going to have any problem working this into the rotation!
I’m having a hard time working up anything really negative to say here!
Case of TrackRs
2 bath towels
M size ladies thigh slimmer
2 hand sanitizer
MacBook pro case
IRK bag
Got mine today! I received:
Mostly stuff we won’t use, but for $10, it’s alright and fun!
Plenty of regret except for the irk bag which is the red and green christmas one people are getting.
4 Trackrs, 2 expired hand sanitizers, 15" macbook pro case no one wants (so now I have 2 of these), and 100’ of ethernet cable. What on earth will I do with all that ethernet cable?
Not worth a photo.
@Kidsandliz If you’re interested, I’ll trade you a pair of women’s work out pants for the cable, unless it’s cat5. Then you might as well use it to tie stuff up
@ybmuG
says L-Com Category 5e Ethernet RJ45 Cable Assembly, 22AWG Stranded 600V PoE, UTP Outdoor Industrial High Flex CM-CMX-PLTC TE
Jacket, Black, 100 FT.
Don’t want work out pants but thank you. Cable weighs a ton.
@Kidsandliz yeah, 5e is pushing it a little. Decent for a networked printer drop. Not worth the shipping to me, but still has useful life.
@ybmuG so like it might even be possible to sell it as someone might want it???
@Kidsandliz more like donate it. They’ll sell it for maybe $10 and it won’t end up in a landfill, for now
@Kidsandliz i have christmas light controllers that use the cat5e cables. You can do wireless but the networks get bogged down quickly when youre sending sata to tens of thousands of pixels and things have problens staying in sync.
@ybmuG OK thanks for the info.
@braveit1 And likely your cord isn’t 100’ long either so plenty of length to get bogged down over.
@Kidsandliz even 100’ cord isnt gonna create wifi traffic, and it’ll always be faster. Espically when the available channels are saturated.
@Kidsandliz @ybmuG
CMX = outdoor rated, so it’s higher spec than the affordable standard patch-cable.
@narfcake Thank you. I know nothing about this or who even uses this kind of stuff. Finally did a search and this is sold new for $267.99 which I find hard to believe and seriously doubt I’d get anything close to this.
By the way, here is a cat pic for you
@Kidsandliz If that 5e isn’t gone by then, I’d happily take it off your hands in March. I can use it for a run out to the garage, where I need some connectivity that I currently lack.
@werehatrack ok
@Kidsandliz @ybmuG It depends on your internet speed. Cat5e is capable of carrying 1gbps speed over 100m of cable. That’s faster than most people’s internet, so for majority of people in the US is “good enough”. If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with faster internet available there are better cables but for the majority of people, no need. If I got it in an IRK I’d be happy. Especially PoE, could run security cameras off that.
@OnionSoup @ybmuG Thank you for educating me. I had no idea what I had here other than questioning what the heck would I use it for in 525sf. I have 75mbps down and maybe 3 or 4 up. So any old thing is good enough for me.
@Kidsandliz @ybmuG pretty much, yeah, if you only have 75mbps internet getting a faster ethernet cable is not going to make any noticeable difference to you.
If you have anything using Wifi that could use ethernet, I recommend connecting them via ethernet.
When we had our new house built it was great, got to have the house pre-wired, so every room in our house is connected to ethernet. All our TVs, everything that can be is connected with a cat6 cable. (we don’t need cat 6, no internet plans near me get anything close to1 gbps, but future proofed a little).
@OnionSoup @ybmuG This building was built in 1984 and hardwired for comcast at that point in time (so get internet via the comcast cable connection). Obsolete equipment all over the place here. Oh well. Not much I can do about that. Fortunately gaming is not my thing and since they stopped the race to get irks my ping of 70+ isn’t an issue anymore either. .
@Kidsandliz @OnionSoup @ybmuG Part of me thought “Hm, I could run this to the gazebo” (about 100’ from the house).
And then I remembered that Gazebo2.0 bit it with the last snow.
@brainmist @OnionSoup @ybmuG So build gazebo 3.0 within 100 feet…
Pretty happy with my IRK!
Red/green IRK bag
Antoni Barcelona Glassware - coffee delight scented candle (smells great!)
Born ladies robe - size L (says 3 piece set, but we got one piece)
Jerzee black tshirt - size XL
bamboo smart phone station
15 in hard shell macbook case
5 piece organizing cube set (missing 1 piece)
IQ Technologies Lifetime Warranty kit - pieces for the IQ Massager
3 Tracker Pixels
Have use for most of it. Thanks, Meh!
Red/green bag - best part
Set of King sheets - fit the spare bed
Hand sanitizer - will go to SIL
Gold phone thumb ring - donate
Pair of women’s work out pants in Heather Rose tie dye (2XL) - donate
12 Trackrs - still trying to come up with an appropriate end to these…
@ybmuG Maybe we should all get together and send them to that crazy guy in Finland who runs Hydraulic Press Channel.
@werehatrack @ybmuG I’m on board. I have to do something with them soon, or else I’ll have to rent a small storage unit to keep them. Not sure why but I can’t just trash them. I feel like that’s letting them win.
Mine arrived today too,
Red/green IRK bag
Compact lit mirror
2 hand sanitizers
2 mascaras
Eyeshadow set
3 trackrs
A cinnamon candle
And a queen size set of bamboo sheets
Are empty boxes to be expected in these things? Most of the stuff is thoroughly okay, but one of the items makes the overall feel pretty shitty.
1 Red tote
2 hand sanitizers
2 mascaras
1 Cankeeper
1 Letscom bluetooth headphone
1 4-pack of Bees Knees Spicy Honey
3 Trackrs
And 1 empty box from a Galaxy Watch 5.
The Cankeeper is nice, the headphones might be useful, and I can probably find someone who’d like the honey, but seeing the watch box and having it be empty is a huge letdown, even considering what “IRK” means.
@middlehead Yes you can get empty boxes as a “joke”. A while back someone got an empty box and someone else got what was in that box - some xbox thing that was the newest out there.
@Kidsandliz @middlehead Yes @dsjack got the box to the new X Box-series X I got. It was filled with books to make him think there was actually an X box in there.
@middlehead same happened to me. Empty box for an item my daughter and I had both been wanting. The regret was real.
@cbilyak @middlehead Ooof! That’s… kinda cruel. But very Meh, and IRKsome.
Got my IRK today. So happy to finally get less than a case of trackrs! Only received 3 so that’s a win in my book.
Other items:
1 Crazy red IRK bag
1 Bamboo phone station- given to teenager to destroy
1 3 in 1 rechargeable led flashlight -I’ll use this
1 fancy essential oil burner-Um…shrug.
1 bottle of hand sanitizer (only one so another win I figure)
2 pieces of a Bjorn robe set- I have no idea what to do with this
The item that makes this my best IRK in a while: new in box knockoff sonic toothbrush. The teen just broke his so this was perfect timing. Here, have this generic toothbrush because you can’t be trusted with an expensive branded one. I don’t feel bad at all!
On another note, I will soon have enough trackrs that I’ve decided to wallpaper my spare bedroom with them.
Also, how soon before we hear about these being buried in the desert like the Atari ET cartridges, as to avoid the embarrassment of them ever being created and Meh purchasing an amount that has to fill a small separate warehouse, that was only created to house said (almost useless) trackrs?
@ohcoasterfreak I wish that I could believe that Meh wants to be rid of the trackRs via any low-enough cost means possible, but I suspect that there is still an embedded desire to keep on using them as virtual packing material in the IRKs. Ergo, I fear we wiil probably still be getting them in the IRKs for a long time to come. I could be wrong. There is always the possibility that they are down to the last pallet of them already, and that the final few cases of them will go out in the next Meh-rathon’s IRKs. But that’s not the way I would bet.
@ohcoasterfreak I may have the other piece to your robe set. Black with pink trim, size L?
@rm9116 unfortunately it’s not to be, my sizes are medium on the shorts and robe. Also, I believe they are a different style.
@werehatrack I didn’t think of the possibility of them using them as packing material. I suppose it would take room up in the box and they can keep the gag going. I am truly curious, how many of these trackrs did they purchase? They are similar in concept to the old bricks of candy corn, except surprisingly I think people would prefer the candy corn slabs over more trackrs. And that’s saying something.
I got one today and I didn’t even order one!
@PooltoyWolf Did @f00l forget to change the address on her account again?
@f00l @Kyeh I hadn’t even considered that!
1 Red & Green Irk Bag (nice)
3 TrackR Pixels
2 Hand sanitizers
1 Size Medium Women’s PJs (Will donate)
1 Curtis Stone Wine Pump & Chiller Set (Wife’s Birthday?)
1 Cuisinart Countdown Toaster (Brand New!) (Girlfriend’s Birthday?)
@Kyser_Soze nice toaster! So much better than my IRK.
@Kyser_Soze Heh, I got those PJs in an XL, so I basically swim in them… but the fabric is so soft, so I kept 'em anyway.
Nice on the toaster!
2 pack hand sanitizer,
Abominable women’s polyester shirt,
20-pack TrackRs
IRK bag
aaaand [drumroll]
a low-end portable HD projector that works.
/giphy larry david nice
@zippyus oh, and an incase 16" macbook sleeve
@zippyus I wonder if those would make decent small cutting boards if the rim around the edge was sliced off?
@werehatrack @zippyus I doubt it. They are textured and would be a pain to clean.
@Kidsandliz @werehatrack @zippyus Frisbees? Sleds for very small children?
No photo this time, but here is what I got.
IRK bag
3 boxes of reusable metal straws
Buccaneers Red Official NFL ball cap
3 soft sports bras that actually are my size
Black Meh shirt, my size also
Bamboo Smartphone/watch etc holder that my husband confiscated
and 3 boxes of TrackRs
I like it when the hubby finds things he likes. Gives me license to keep getting them.
It’s been said before, but just in case there are some first timers who are contemplating tossing the hand sanitizers in the trash because of the past expiration date:
Manufacturers put Expiration or Best By dates on products because we the consumers have put pressure on them to do so and not because the manufacturers have some special insight about how long the product is going to last! They are only estimates and are generally pulled out of some PR person’s nether regions.
Nowhere is this more obvious than first aid and personal Safety products, most of which will last damn near forever as long as they are unopened and not exposed to an excessive amount of heat. A couple of years ago I got some surplus first aid kits from Peace Corps, the individual components of which were way more out of date than these hand sanitizers, and I’ve had no qualms about using them.
@godainobaka FTC and FDA rules set the maximum “best by” date for nearly everything at two years. Many foodstuffs, like a lot of granola products and baked goods, have a shorter one because they don’t stay good that long. Things that logically are underdated by regulation are common, but so are things that really do get nasty shortly after their stale date. Of all the many things I keep around, I know of only a few that routinely go truly bad at or near their stale date, but those reliably do go bad on schedule or a bit sooner. The key is to understand which things suffer from oxidative or other deterioration with time, and which do so only very slowly or not at all. Fats tend to be the former, many starches toward the latter. Sugar seems eternal. And paradoxically, the individual peel-apart covers on Nexcare bandages become hard to open long before the bandages themselves deteriorate, and they don’t seem to have a stale date on the package to permit accurate stock rotation.
@godainobaka @werehatrack
I think it’s Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines that says somewhere on their website that their cake mixes never really expire. You can still use them 20 years later (as long as they been sealed) the only thing that will happen is they might not rise as well. And yes I’ve actually read this first hand and tested it for cake mix that like 5 or 6 years old.
@Star2236 Several years back, I got handed a huge stash of canned “emergency food” that had been one of the prized possessions of a “prepper”. The stuff was about 35 years old. Over half of it was really no longer useful. You’d think that flour canned with a nitrogen fill would have been unchanged, but it wasn’t, and even a friend’s chickens refused to eat the split peas and some of the dehydrated vegetables. But the raspberry dessert mix was still delish, and some other things seemed unaffected as well. Sugar is eternal. Dried onions, not so much. Garlic powder … can you say “bitter and nasty?” (But then, it you’d been hidden in a #10 can for 35 years, you’d be a lot worse than bitter.)
@Star2236 @werehatrack Hell, I’m bitter and nasty now!
@Star2236 @werehatrack
Having done a bit of prepping myself, I know exactly what you mean.
The emergency food industry is rife with exactly the sort of pulling dates out of their nether regions that I referred to in my original post. Estimates of freeze dried and oxygen depleted food lasting for 30 years or longer are common. In reality, while those foods may still be edible, they very likely have passed their prime and won’t be as tasty as if consumed a decade or two earlier!
I suppose any port in a storm. If you really are in an emergency, the fact that what you’re eating tastes like cardboard and has the nutritional value only slightly better than same probably is less concerning to you than the fact that your stomach is full. But the best practice as far as I’m concerned is to buy regularly and rotate out the oldest stuff so that you don’t wind up with 30-year-old food in the first place!
@werehatrack
I would like to clarify a point. There is no federal requirement that any food product (with the exception of baby food and infant formula) have any kind of dating. And in fact, some companies don’t bother. Given this, I stand by my original assertion that companies use expiration dates and best by dates because they see a demand for them from the General Public. It’s definitely not because the feds require it of them. Now the situation may be different for other types of consumer goods. I’m not off hand familiar with any rules governing dating of first aid supplies. I just know that the dates on said supplies are frequently years shorter than they need to be.
“The key is to understand which things suffer from oxidative or other deterioration with time, and which do so only very slowly or not at all. Fats tend to be the former, many starches toward the latter.”
Bang on. When it comes to extended shelf life, fat and oxygen are the enemy. Which is why, for example, people who are attempting to package rice for long-term emergency storage inevitably use white rice instead of brown. Sure the brown rice has the fiber but it also has the oils which go rancid relatively quickly. White rice, kept in a oxygen depleted environment, will last a very long time. Granola and most baked goods have high fat content in them, explaining their relatively short shelf life. Pilot bread and similar items have little or no fat content and last considerably longer.
I’ve never been a fan of Nexcare bandages, so I really cannot comment on them. I do know that your bog standard cloth adhesive strips don’t seem to have the packaging issues you’re describing, and I have used them a couple of years after their “expiration date” with no loss of efficacy. The only times I have ever had first aid supplies go bad on me were one time that a whole batch of alcohol swabs dried out well before the expiration date and another time that some cravat bandages simply decomposed inside of their packaging. I opened the package up and found basically white dust inside. The packaging was intact, so I can only assume it was something that it was exposed to at the factory or that it was exposed to extreme heat at some point which hastened its deterioration.
@godainobaka The FDA and FTC do not regulate this, you are correct, but that does not mean that no one does. The state of Washington has fairly comprehensive food date labeling requirements, and Wal-Mart (oddly enough) has required labeling from all of its suppliers since 2004. As a result of just those two, the vast majority of national brands have adopted such labeling at this point, with additional state and local regs causing most regional suppliers to do the same. Other large grocery store chains also require this type of labeling as well. In many cases, the desire for the date labelling is driven by the need to easily check for proper stock rotation and ensure that at the store level, the “freshest” shelf-stable items are not in the front on the shelf. However, the common experience of a hell of a lot of consumers has been that when the item is past the sell-by date and showing any signs of deterioration, it’s probably not worth testing to see if it’s still “good”, because it won’t be. And for things in soft packaging, which tends to be a poor barrier to oxidation, even the appearance isn’t a good barometer. (Except for pasta. That stuff’s good for a decade at least, if the package isn’t open or it’s been moved into a resealable container.)
The important thing, however, is that all of the sources make the observation that “safe” often has nothing to do with “good” from a nutritional standpoint. Our food processing systems are way too good at nuking the nutritional value of a lot of stuff as it is, and age can induce further losses even under optimal conditions. So the best rule of thumb is to not stockpile food beyond what is expected to be used in a reasonable amount of time for the item, use up what you’ve already got before buying more (or something else), and buy the freshest that your use and storage capabilities will deal with in a timely manner.
@werehatrack
I don’t keep track of state-level regulations, much less what individual retailers might impose on their suppliers, so what you said is new to me. Fair enough points, but the original claim was that it was regulated at the federal level and that’s not true.
I recently was tasked with going through my late father’s pantry and separating out the stuff that could be donated to the local Food pantry and the stuff that could not. The majority of the stuff there could not be donated, for one of two reasons:
There was a surprising amount of stuff that had no date on it. So yes, there are definitely still a not insignificant number of manufacturers that don’t use dates.
A huge amount of stuff looked perfectly fine but was past the best by date. Which IMO speaks to the importance of trusting ones eyes and nose to determine whether or not a product is good rather than a date that was put on there by some manufacturer.
Your surmise that retailers want dates on packaging to facilitate stock rotation makes a great deal of sense. It’s unfortunate that every grocery store I’ve been in does a slipshod job of stock rotation, and that newer product is almost inevitably at the front of the display. It’s understandable, of course, since stocking shelves takes more time when you properly rotate stock. Employees don’t want to do it, and they are generally not supervised closely enough to force them to do it. The only exception I can think of is refrigerator cases where the product is actually stocked from the rear.
As far as individual stockpiling goes, beliefs are going to vary. If the average American only buys what they expect to use within, say, 2 weeks, they’re going to be caught flat footed in the event of a major emergency. Look at what happened during the pandemic to our fragile supply chains, and then imagine how those supply chains would fare in a REAL emergency.
I’m not saying that people should buy a two-year supply of food and let it age out. But buying a little bit extra to add to your stockpile every month and then rotating the older stuff into your pantry on a regular basis is not a bad practice.
@godainobaka For items that aren’t in the refrigerator case, a lot of grocery stores rely on their churn rate and just-in-time restock to keep the rotation going. Stores with a lower sales level may have more than a 30 day supply of some slow-moving stuff, in which case the ones in the back can be very old indeed.
It’s not food, but tangentially related; back in the early '70s, VW got hit with some kind of a requirement (it may have been from the German side) that forced them to have their dealers inspect all of the brake cylinders, calipers, and related repair kits in their Parts stock to see which ones lacked a stale date; any undated ones, and any dated ones that were less than 180 days from that stale date got returned to the distribution centers. We were never told what happened to them, but the assumption was that they were scrapped. After that, we never got another cylinder or kit that was less than a year and a half from its stale date - and not long after, a whole bunch of cylinders and even more kits for the oldest models became unavailable. Not long after that happened, they stopped supplying repair kits for the master cylinders altogether.
@werehatrack
Very interesting. I wonder how legitimate the concern was about those parts going bad? Not being at all knowledgeable about automobile repair or manufacture, it strikes me that with a few exceptions (items with rubber, foam, etc) the lifespan on most Auto parts ought to be just about indefinite.
@godainobaka These were from the era when advanced resilient polymers had not yet displaced actual rubber from any common brake components, and the rubber affirmatively did deteriorate when sitting unused, even with the waxy coatings that most had. Master cylinders should have been regarded as more shelf-stable, but even those got the same treatment.
Got mine today. Seems good. Got:
30 trackR’s
2 hand sanitizers
1 Ncase 15” hard laptop cover
1 Cuisinart hand blender
1 Tacklife jump starter
1 red irk bag
Definitely makes up a lot of ground from the last few I’ve had. Happily surprised. Thanks Meh!
@milstarr Oooh, that hand blender looks…erm…handy? And the charger definitely is.
Got mine on Monday. A bit worried because the box was the exact same size as the December IRK. That one had a case of 12 1A car chargers, a case of 24 bottles of acrylic paint, a carton of 32 blue TrackRs. Room just for 1 IRK plushie and 1 Mac pro case but IRK bag went awol.
But this one was a nice haul.
3 black TrackRs
Mario Bros T-shirt size XXL
King-art table top display stand
32 oz Cambridge tumbler
Victor & Victoria arroisor teapot with stainless infuser
1 set of Touch of Eco solar string lights
Thank you meh.
@rcwbbb Oh man, way jealous of the Mario shirt!
@PooltoyWolf Liked the Mario shirt, too. Unfortunately XXL is a little big on me.
@rcwbbb Could wear it as a sleep shirt
@PooltoyWolf Great idea. There are nights when it does get cold so I can throw this over my pjs instead of throwing on another blanket.
Got the hand sanitizer and trakrs too. But also a doggie swimming pool which I always buy at the start of each summer for my dog so I was pretty lucky.
@BergyD Would love to doggie modeling in the swimming pool.
@BergyD I was wondering if I was the only one. Having no doggie of my own, and friends with doggies living only in apartments, I can’t say I can figure out much use for it. Maybe I’ll fill it in the summer and add some stacks of stones and see if birds will be into it?
@gdorn you could fill it with trackrs!
I skipped this one, I should have bought.
@Star2236 Well you could have ended up with mine and then you’d have regretted it.
@Star2236 Nah, you were wise to skip it. You’re only seeing posts from those who aren’t too embarrassed or ashamed to show their measly haul. Do a quick “# Sold” vs. “Here’s my IRK” posts and you’ll see many didn’t even bother to reveal.
@IndifferentDude @Star2236 My impression has always been that under 10% will post a reveal regardless of content.
@Star2236 i posted mine because i scored a projector, but the last three or four i got were too meh to motivate me to write them up (the best items in one of them were pop sockets and a vinyl wall decal of the skyline of cleveland).
Anyone get a small blue box (kind of like Tiffany’s) containing a silver necklace with 3 stone pendant? No details on what the metal or stones are. Im guessing its not reala diamonds but wish details were included.
@user80543871 You might be able to find it over on, likely, morningsave. Post a photo and someone might be able to find it for you.
Hmm this maybe (missing the earings)? 3 stones and blue box.
@Kidsandliz thanks!
@user80543871 And today this is for sale on meh.
@Kidsandliz haha. its not exaclty the same thing i got in the IRK but same idea minus the earings. Most likely similar thing/price.
The heart solar lights actually work and go with the Valentine’s theme! This was the only usable (by me) thing from my IRK
@TimW They’re pretty at least!
@TimW Got these in my IRK. Thanks for the idea. Was coming up blank on where to use.
Finally got mine! (And more expensive print materials that FedEx again dumped in snow.)
Nothing picture worthy, really: a lot of overlap with others’.
-Red bag (yay!)
-3 single Trackr packs
-Hand sanitizer x2 (will use)
-workout pants in dusty blue, my size, with pockets… but may rehome
-Eyeshadow palette + 2 mascara (apparently these: https://www.ulta.com/p/long-live-lash-mascara-pimprod2032459, so I’m considering grouping and trying to resell, but I may be too lazy. I’ve just hit a point where I’m pretty certain I don’t have enough life left to wear all this make-up.)
-Wallet-purse; I’ll likely rehome
And
What I thought was a king set of sheets, but is in fact a king comforter. Polyester pseudo-down, but I’m rarely sad to have another comforter. And my short-haired, comfort loving doggoes are NEVER sad!
So not bad at all!
The best part? no Mac accessories I can’t use.
I got a case of Trackrs
A small phone ring
Expired hand sanitizer
King sized bed sheets
And the only thing of any value was a pair of 2xl women’s tights that I can give to a friend.
Suboptimal Meh.
@dceducky Sheets don’t have value?
/giphy peanuts ghost
@sammydog01 unfortunately don’t own a king sized bed. And afraid of being accused of ghost cultural appropriation if I wear them. Not going to walk into that sheet-storm.
@dceducky that hand sanitizer is fine. Someone else posted above (I think) about hand sanitizer and “expiration” dates.
@dceducky I got the EXACT same things. Thanks for letting me not have to list all the regret! Ditto on the tights, regifting. And at least my king size sheets were blue…
The standard: Macbook case, 3 Trakrs, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer.
The above-standard: Color-changing lightbulbs, and a “Blue Ice” size L zippered hoodie that’s got a “retail price” of $52.50 (dubious) but it’s pretty nice. Too big but I might keep it anyway to wear over other layers when it’s really cold; it’ll give me that streetwise snowboarder chic.
Oh, and the delightfully garish Christmas-colored Meh bag!
@Kyeh Can you wear an XS? I got a women’s heavy coat in that size this time, and it’s probably a bit much for this climate. (I don’t know about yours.)
@werehatrack No - thanks, but I’m a medium. (Size, not psychic abilities, unfortunately!) I also have SO MANY COATS! I love coats.
(Now the word coat looks funny to me …)
@Kyeh @werehatrack LOL, I think maybe I got the pants.
@Kyeh
I always wear oversized hoodies around the house. It’s how I keep warm.
@Kyeh co-at. so-at? ca-ate? (BTDT.)
@Star2236 We’re supposed to have ridiculously warm temps next week - 60s! Which I’ll enjoy but I’ll also worry about the fire danger. But if it gets back down to below freezing, I’ll try it.
@werehatrack Co - At.
@brainmist @werehatrack But you said dusty blue? The hoodie’s black, but the brand name is Blue Ice.
@Kyeh the color changing bulbs are fun!!!
@Kyeh @werehatrack Ope, thought that was the color.
Got mine today. Won’t be keeping much for myself but still a good box.
The bag - very hard to look at
2 Mented Mascaras
Box with 2 dummy security cameras
2 things of sanitizer. I’m due in April so that’s actually pretty good to have.
3 of the Trackrs which someone told me before can be used
1 very fragrant cinnamon candle
1 smart device bamboo stand
Not a bad box just don’t need most of it so I’ll be finding new homes for most.
Wow, def getting a bad run of IRKs, major regret again!
1 Meh Bag - Seizure Edition™
3 Trackers
3 Expired Hand Sanitizers
1 MacBook Pro Hard Case
1 used and non-functional motorized mop complete with mouse droppings & piss inside it’s box.
Whoever I pissed off over there:
/giphy I’m sorry!
@PHRoG seizure edition bag!! Am I the only one that LOVES it?
@PHRoG @cbilyak
No, I think it’s delightfully garish!
1-Green and Red Meh Bag
1-Pet Pool
1-Phone ring stand/holder
1-Vanity Planet Serum Booster
2-Hand Sanitizer
12-TrackR
I got a pretty candle in a nice glass jar. I pulled the wax out and now have a nice glass jar to put stuff in. Paper clips?
Also got a fuzzy robe, probably pretty cheap, but fuzz is nice.
And the usual.
@sammydog01
That robe looks super cozy!
and, of course, a MacBook case… which miraculously is a perfect fit for my laptop, so I’m calling it a win!
Not a bad haul this time…
The T6 jump starter was worth it; though I think I’ve already got 2 around here I forgot to give away for xmas!
Edit: And a Break The Rules gremlin T-Shirt!
Not too bad overall, but not very useful for me. The hairdryer made my son’s girlfriend super excited. Lol.
I’ve been delinquent in not reporting on my IRK. I’m also still delinquent because I have no picture. But at least I can share:
Well played, Meh. It’s like a balanced seesaw of regret, with neither kid’s toes able to touch the ground. Thank you!
Another delinquent here, but a bit less than @djslack because I have a photo:
THE BAG in the background. The whole family wants these.
Two battery-lighted purse mirrors - one floral and one green (just like the picture). And batteries included!
Meh men’s medium t-shirt - one granddaughter resides in New York and “meh” has crept into her vocabulary.
A rather nice 42-B bra I think will fit somebody in the family.
A hair bow/butterfly thing that has something to do with massage equipment.
Two car chargers.
The big item - a 3-Piece Gold Isaac Mizrahi Luggage - Meh decided I needed to quit traveling with just a beat-up old backpack when going on fancy cruises with Cunard? Hard-sided metal, wheels, zipper-expandable. It is leading me to reconsider my non-fashion choices!
Thank you MEH!
@romellex Did this come in Feb? (thinking so due to the black bag as the thread you posted in where the christmas colored bags). If yes that reveal thread is here:
https://meh.com/forum/topics/irk-reveal-thread-february-matches-made-in-retail
Nice haul by the way.
THANK YOU Meh!!! my IRK came today, along with my awesome colored IRK bag & I received a 3 piece set Olympia lugguge set,a SELECTED wrinkle eraser syringe,2 Mented mascara, pair men’s polarized sunglasses and a Sealy neck pulse/massage ( this was the only item that was broken )… After SO MANY I-phone glasses and those no app trackers, thjs IRK was GREATLY AND GRATEFULLY appreciated
GOD Bless you all
OWLS! TOWELS! JOWLS! AWESOME!
The shark vacuum really sucks! It’s the best IRK I’ve ever gotten I’m so hype I forgot to take a picture of the bag! Cats not included.

I posted my IRK above. But I also want to say that my credit card account just got credited all the $5s I spent on this deal! Thank you again MEH!
