iOS 11.1 update fixes KRACK, adds 70 new emoji
7Because, emoji.
Seriously though, the KRACK patch. Also, a few performance and battery life enhancements are reported by Ziff Davis and Forbes. ZD tested with some older phones and assert improvement in the lag and slug caused by the iOS 11 update.
Plus, emoji. I mean, who doesn’t need a curling stone emoj at least a few times a week??

fixes KRACK (Key Reinstallation AttaCK) in iphone 7 and later.
earlier devices? apple is mum.
@thismyusername I have an iPhone 6, and it updated just fine. Good thing I looked, since there’s only one place that I use wireless, and I’d been about to leave. The update had just shown up (on the afternoon of the 1st), when I was at the ISP to write a check.
No wireless at House of Shrdlu (just paranoia). Wired network, only.
@Shrdlu
Haha. So unlimited data plan on your phone and no need to use wifi to save data? And don’t use tablets?
And no Alexa Echos or Google Home, of course.
@Shrdlu the current chatter is that older idevices (6s and earlier) either had wpa2 implemented in such a way as to not be venerable… or only venerable to one aspect (replay)… either way it is not advised to hold you breath waiting on apple to comment on any of this
@Shrdlu @thismyusername I know when I read the response from my router manufacturer, they mentioned that the vulnerability was in one specific aspect of WPA2 which (if memory serves) was meant to make transitioning from one hot spot to another more seamless, or something along those lines. Not having that feature didn’t break spec. So while I certainly don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes w/ Apple, it does seem plausible that older generations simply wouldn’t have had this thing implemented to begin with.
@brhfl correct, the current attacks are aimed at the clients, not the APs (router)… so unless your router supports 802.11r fast roaming (most home units do not) or itself is acting as a client to another wireless router (some extenders/repeaters might be doing this)… there is not much to be done with your router.
that is not to say the implementation is not faulty on the routers, it is just that KRACK itself is a client attack… give them some time they might find things that will require the routers to be patched.
the source of the older idevice not being venerable was determined (as far as I can tell) by testing the devices while running on 10.x.x… I presume apple realizes what is up… since they did patch el capitan (older macos version) I am assuming it must mean they are safe… but… you know how assuming goes.
@thismyusername My router was vulnerable had I been using WiFi as WAN, which… Doesn’t really make sense in a home. I have to give Peplink big ups for their very detailed and prompt response, always good to know what’s going on with your equipment in a time of (potential) crisis.
@brhfl sure it does… wifi as wan is just client mode… so if you had a cellular hotspot that was wifi only and you wanted to use it as the internet source for your router so that all your wired devices could connect.
but yes this whole thing really lets you see who has their shiznit together for sure
@thismyusername Fair enough. I’ve always thought of it more as a ‘going to a hotel’ feature given the multiple ethernet & USB WAN inputs, but I can see where some home users may want to use their phone as primary WAN, etc.
RedOak: Data plan is limited, but then, I only use my phone for the occasional text. The iPad hasn’t yet got an update for this, but it’s older, and may not need one. It was EOL just in time for 11.0, so I’m unsurprised. Most of my network has actual computers on it. I have two laptops, but everything else is a desktop (except the router, which is Cisco, of course).
It’s an actual network.
@thismyusername
Various iOS device associated with my life have updated, including some 6s’s and a 5s.
Excepting one iPhone 5c in the family, no update available currently.
The current thinking is that “the iOS 10 devices don’t need a KRACK patch as badly”? But no official word?
Well that’s kinda creepy. To me. Huh.
Guess the wifi on the iPhone 5c gets to stay turned off for a while.
Not yet updated: a few ipads no one has powered up recently. That’s a project for the weekend.
Same with the not recently booted WIN machines.
Thx for iOS info.
@brhfl
I’ve got a HooToo Tripmate TM04. Not powered on in a while.
I guess I better check the firmware.
Thx for reminder.
@Shrdlu
I believe.
How do you use the Ipad with no wifi at home? is it mostly a travel device, or a media device and you sync to the hated (imho) iTunes?
Had to be.
I believe.
@f00l
to all of us… silence is golden?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@f00l iPad has a SIM card. Piece of cake.
@Shrdlu
I had completely forgotten that some iPads came with a sim slot.

Hey, emojis are serious news! Fox News knows!
@narfcake I couldn’t help but to notice every emoji is now offered in both genders. Except the woman in the hijab.
@ruouttaurmind damnit where’s my bearded lady??
@RiotDemon Bearded lady it is then…
@ruouttaurmind There also isn’t a breastfeeding man.
@SSteve Oh, you’re challenging me now…
I found a pic of Anna Paquin feeding twins, but decided not to upload because I don’t have conclusive proof Anna is really a man.
Numerous people complained that iOS 11 prevented sending MMS to Android devices.
This update fixed the issue.
Re KRACK
I got an Alexa Echo on the Amazon pre-order sale. First turned it on a long time after it arrived. Played with it a bit. Kinda cute. But not (for me) actually that useful. I didn’t want to talk to it. I didn’t wish to interact that way. I didn’t want it partly any just any surcharge within range.
After a few days of not using it, and feeling increasingly creepy having it there, and imagining a plethora of potential hacks and abuses, I turned off the mic.
And altho it’s a decent BT spesker, I don’t use those much either. So … Even tho I had purchased more of these (taps, and a dot) I got rid of them. To people I don’t know.
I feel weird about that. Like, perhaps I have a duty to warn?
(in relation to KRACK - surely these persons are responsible for thinking thru the privacy issues themselves? I don’t think they would have wantedmy thoughts anyway.)
Bit these were Craiglist sales. The buyers don’t want to hear from me now, some time after the fact. that would be even creepier. So I guess I will let that be between the user and Amazon?
Surely Amazon has the resources and has a notable degree of legal/image/q vulnerability to be motivated to deal with this.
Anyway, it’s weird.
I have some stuff that was going to Goodwill.
Including a few really old routers (Linksys, reset to default and not used in something like “forever”.)
Now I’m wondering if I should give them to Goodwill. Someone could take one home and set it up (and leave all the setup parameters on default).
I feel queasy about this.
Should I, instead, just take a hammer to them? Or a hammer/drill, as with old hard drives?
Wither Android on this? I haven’t been reading up.
Anyone know?
@f00l
Android - Nov security build.
ChromeOS - Version 62 already patches this.
Android ROMs - OmniROM and LineageOS already cover it.
Essential phone - Already patched.
@mflassy
Much thx. (Also regarding ChromeOS)
What is an “essential phone”?
Had not heard of this item.
@f00l
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_Phone
Andy Rubin designed this phone.
@mflassy
Again thx.
Because I am either lazy or busy or completely scattered and ineffective (most likely reason), I ask:
(If you happen to know, you are NOT required to do my work for me)
Are there universal announced policies or updates?
Is there are single place to keep track of who has announced patches and who has not, and what devices will or won’t be patched?
What about older wifi Kindle e-readers?
(1st thru Kindle Touch, I have some in a box because I kinda love them, which is idiotic)
Newer Kindle readers?
Nook e-readers?
Other e-readers?
Amazon Fire Phones (which are not activated cell, I use sometimes for their excellent “read-aloud” capacities and connect over wifi to dl a given book)
Kindle Fire tablets, older and newer?
The older “Nook-B&N” tablets?
The newer Nook/Samsung tablets (this world be Samsung’s responsibility, I presume)?
Other weird or old garbage Android tablets (I might have some somewhere in a box, people give me stuff sometimes).
What about the HP tablet - what was it called - that ran the Palm Pre OS? (Don’t own one, know people who do).
Sorry to ask, but you seem to be pretty up-to-the-knowledge here.
@f00l
On a different thread regarding KRACK, there was a link with a constantly updated list regarding patches from different companies.
@mflassy
Ok thx.

@shrdlu
I haven’t written an actual check in so many years.
Reading that, am feeling that I have been seriously casual about the risks of the modern world at the moment.
Do I think that I live in Lollipop Land?
When the Great Pulse, or the Great Grid Hack comes, those who have decades-old legacy vehicles and lots of hand tools and a few horses might find their possessions have become as True Riches.
… if the owners survive the inevitable threats to continued possession.
I suppose most firearms will still have functionality.
@f00l I had to pay for my daughter’s driving lessons. They wanted cash or check. It was something like $350. Ummm… yeah, I have that rolling around in the bottom of my purse. Off to find my checkbook. I’m so used to my cards.
@sammydog01
I haven’t yet transitioned to most various “wallets” (other than PayPal and some bank-approved apps.
But yeah. I think I know where my checkbook is. I think.
Better check.
@f00l That’s why I have a small floor loom! It’s probably going to be useless, I know. But still…
@mossygreen
When that day comes, many of us may be taking lessons from the Mennonites, the Amish, farmers, shade-tree mechanics, and people with their own machines shops.
@f00l Ja you betcha
@mossygreen You don’t have a ECM and a TCM for your car in a buried Faraday cage?
@cranky1950 I only know what a Faraday cage is because of my love of psychic research (why did they think putting Uri Geller [or anyone else] in a Faraday cage would do anything?). So, no. I have a small floor loom. And an inkle loom. And three lap looms. And a bunch of cards for card weaving. And a warping board I stole from college. I used to have a nice set of carders and a drop spindle also stolen from college, but lost them in the summer flood. Anyway, LOOMS! I just like having them around.
Oh, I actually have two stolen warping boards. Gee, you’d think I’d weave something.
