Bah. I would buy this but I already have two record players and one of them is an old Sony portable car turntable. What I would really like are some needles for said turntable.
Missed this last time- wanted to get records on to MP3 before da man finds a way to add DRM to vinyl. I got raspberry. Now I need to get a beret, since meh is basically a second hand store. Think I might love it.
I avoided the Meh yesterday, because I really should have bought those recorders. I haven't been burgalarized in a few months, knock on wood, but I should have bought the recorders. Just as i should buy this turntable. I loved them last time, and love them this time. And they are even cheaper! Ridiculous! lemme check my funds.
I had to sell all my records 8 years ago. I only got around $400 for them, the buyers knew I was desperate. I take consolation in thinking that somewhere a young person is listening to my old Crass records and is beginning to harbor a resentment towards the constructs of wealth and power.
@cercopithecoid "Do they owe us a living? Course they do. Course they do! Do they owe us a living? Course they $%^# do!" I'm still debating spening my last dolla for this thing. If I get it, you can come over and listen to my Crass. (Sorry, I don't have an "anarchy" symbol on my keyboard).
@andrewpatrick Add pennies to the end of the arm... apply them with scotch tape. It's how it used to be done. Use the pre-83 pennies though... they're almost all copper. Those zinc pennies are hell on turntables.
@Not_Ken_M Thanks for the tip. I'll still pass though, since I'm still half regretting, half anticipating my pebble time. That was basically my meh budget for the next two months, plus I bought a D-Brand skin for it to avoid scratching.
@ngrygier It really depends on the exchange rate in your country and the year of the penny. 1943 copper pennies are way better than, say, 1985 copper pennies. Canadian pennies don't work that well but they're really nice.
@Not_Ken_M I bit on this and I don't want it to destroy my records. I'm sure I can find some US pennies from pre 1983, maybe adding 2 to the arm will help? Thanks for helping to clarify
Hey, remember that one time when you bought that Ion Audio Suitcase Turntable on Meh? Well, now we need your help.
OK, I need your help. I'm the guy who writes the little stories that go with each day's product that you may have seen and/or ignored. I really like writing about products like the Ion Audio Suitcase Turntable - you know, cool fun stuff that's more interesting than batteries or a pair of headphones. You ever tried writing jokes about freaking batteries?
The problem is, that boring stuff sells pretty steadily, while we're never quite sure how the interesting stuff will do. What I need is to prove that there's an audience for more exciting, offbeat deals.
That's where you come in. We're selling that suitcase turntable again today.
Would you mind hipping your hippest friends to this deal? Putting Meh in front of the swingin’est eyeballs in your social circle? The cooler our audience gets, the cooler our deals can get, and the less often I'll have to make HDMI cables sound fascinating.
You'll appreciate more fun deals. I'll appreciate more fun work. And maybe I'll be able to stop sending you emails with manipulative subject lines. No promises, of course. I'm desperate here.
@jqubed I like the "one hit wonder" compilations. BTW, ever hear the original version of "Back When My Hair Was Short" by Gunhill Road? The 1972 version?
It warms my heart to sit in my man cave in front of the AV wall pondering listening to my 5 feet wide shelf of albums. On the Technics direct drive turntable with Shure V15 cartridge I bought since it had no belt to dry out. Because soon there would be no way to play my precious albums.
But there's no nostalgia letting my similar collection of CDs collect dust. (Especially since 300 of them sit dust-fused to the carousel of my hasn't-been-turned on in 3-years Sony 'mega storage' CD player.)
No, instead I turn on Pandora. Embarrassing to acknowledge.
This will eat your records like chewing gum. And the sound will be like a sewing needle in the groove. Fun for kids, and recordings you have no intention of listening to critically, as it will carve new songs into your vinyl. heh
You don't have to be a hipster to own one of these. You just need some vinyl, some time, some friends, and some reefer--I mean if that's your kinda thing. It's not so much that this turntable is portable with a battery (that's cool enough), but what's nice is this: it is friggin simple. Simple af. You can be higher than Willie Nelson on top of Old Smokey and still get your jam on. I bought this the last time it was on Meh and I would have plugged in my little stereo amp and two Bose bookshelf speakers, but before I even got home to see it my wife had given it away to a friend "who just fell in love with it when she saw it." This time I'm going to sit in a lawnchair out front, beer in hand, wifebeater on, wad of extra-carcinogenic-extra-nicotine tobacco in my jowl and try to look as cool as Bill Murray would. Then I'm going to greet the UPS/FedEx/USPS dude or chick right there and take this treasure inside and write my name all over it with a Sharpie. Or maybe some paint. Or maybe, like a wild beast, I'll just piss on it to claim it as mine--but I suppose that depends on how many beers I've had by then. We'll see. Well, I'll see; you won't. Get your own damn turntable, dude.
this is amazing for the price. i got one for my daughter last time it was up and i just bought another one. rechargeable battery amazing. can't go wrong for the price.
I wish I had bought one of these instead of the regular, sit-on-the-shelf style. With this, I could walk around town and over to friends' houses (if I had friends, I suppose), and look like a cool dude. Walking around town (especially aimlessly - see note above about friends or lack thereof) with a sit-on-the-shelf style turntable results in lots of odd stares... and not all of those stares are by me.
Bought one for my 34 hippie daughter that thinks VCR's are making a comeback... at least when she gets around to collecting vinal she can go digital at the same time
So I got one for my dad and shipped it to him - I've never seen the thing, but here's what he says about it:
I was surprised that the turntable was powered by using the USB.
The arm weight is light, and promptly slid across an LP. By placing of a small amount of weight over the stylus this was remedied.
Provided software installed easily, and is user friendly. Connecting to the PC was simple and the device was found promptly.
Recording quality was not great. Try as I did, the recorded sound had a hollow sound to it, not as good replication of sound as I had hoped. Disappointment was evident in this area.
For the price I really did not know what to expect... It has conveniences for itself and the PC. But the end result was where at was headed, and in the recorded sound it wasn't what I hoped.
I've been looking at the Goodwill a few years for little floor speaker/amplifier system I could hook my turntable up to. Never found anything. Now, a few days after buying the Ion, one came up tonight, and tomorrow it will be half price--$8.00. How about that!
I bought the Ion because I got tired of waiting around for something to come up, and I didn't want to wait a few more years to listen to some records. And the price of the Ion was still cheaper than a replacement styli was going to cost me, (I used to use a AVA Longhorn Grado, back when I had a bit of 'cake"). I'm going to be careful with my records, but I think the Ion is going to give me a bit of fun! And if I like going down that road again, I'll just save up for that Grado styli.

@AttyVette Keep an eye on Meh to pack up and really move these tonight.
A local LA liquidator store just had these for $25!!! Pallets of them! Bulldog Liquidation. Love mine.
@connorbush what store? I live in LA
@connorbush (ibid)
@thekenya It's in the post, Bulldog Liquidation.
@thekenya 9200 De Soto Ave, Chatsworth, CA 91311
A record-breaking deal.
@SmockJata
You could spin it that way.
Bah. I would buy this but I already have two record players and one of them is an old Sony portable car turntable. What I would really like are some needles for said turntable.
Wax on,
wax off
This deal again? Meh is starting to sound like a broken record.
Site was erroring, Meh
The software is usually Audacity, which is freeware.
I think I'll skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it,
It smells like hipsters in here.
@Fish_Kungfu
@Fish_Kungfu
How many hipsters does it take to turn on a record player.
It's an obscure number ... you've probably never heard of it.
@MehnofLaMehncha LOL! I'm stealing that and using it at work tomorrow...well..today.
This record does not exist.
Yet.
I'd love to give the Mediocre Laboratory some funds, but I don't want to ruin my precious vinyls
I love stuff like this, just not enough to buy it! Unless there's some Justin Bieber on vinyl. I'd love to rock out to that little Canadian scamp!
@fuzzmanmatt He's yours now. Enjoy him. We're all about Justin Trudeau now.
@PhotoJim I'll trade him back for some poutine.
@fuzzmanmatt
Did i ever tell y'all about ordering poutine with a side of fries at a Canadian Air Force base snack bar?
I'll go on the record and say one thing, this is as Meh as it gets. I'll take 2.
Missed this last time- wanted to get records on to MP3 before da man finds a way to add DRM to vinyl.
I got raspberry. Now I need to get a beret, since meh is basically a second hand store. Think I might love it.
I bought two last time. Gave one as a gift and the girl I gave it to loves it.
I avoided the Meh yesterday, because I really should have bought those recorders. I haven't been burgalarized in a few months, knock on wood, but I should have bought the recorders.

@wew o.k. bought. you can come over any time.
Cool, I can listen to my record collection again. Oh wait, mom threw them all away while I was at college.
@awk True DAT [wish I had one...]
if you wanna keep your records sounding good get a decent turntable....
I'd buy it if it had a weighted arm. Don't want my records to get destroyed, thank you.
@andrewpatrick Add pennies to the end of the arm... apply them with scotch tape. It's how it used to be done. Use the pre-83 pennies though... they're almost all copper. Those zinc pennies are hell on turntables.

And I'm not using scotch tape for that purchase
@Not_Ken_M how many pennies would you recommend adding?
@ngrygier It really depends on the exchange rate in your country and the year of the penny. 1943 copper pennies are way better than, say, 1985 copper pennies. Canadian pennies don't work that well but they're really nice.

Teetering on the precipice of boredom -
Meh
And oh, I've never opened the box
There really ought to be more "Best Of and Worst Of" albums.
@jqubed Peter Gabriel came close. He has a 2 part set with one disc called "Hit" and the second called "Miss."
@jqubed I like the "one hit wonder" compilations. BTW, ever hear the original version of "Back When My Hair Was Short" by Gunhill Road? The 1972 version?
@laydros @jqubed Devo also has "Greatest Hits" and "Greatest Misses" albums.

@widijaz So, it records as well?
@widijaz scratched up records are groovy, man.
You don't have to be a hipster to own one of these. You just need some vinyl, some time, some friends, and some reefer--I mean if that's your kinda thing. yano, 40 Years ago folks usta worship their vinyl now they play it on this shit.
@cranky1950 40 years ago I used to play all my music on a record player. Now I know better. It's all on a server in FLAC.
No matter how many you sell of these, it'll just scratch the surface.
I prefer to keep needles at arm's length.
I have records to play, and it'd be exciting to buy this and play them. But is it worth $34 dollars for excitement that'll hardly last a day?
@chacham "scratch the surface", "arm's length".
ha, underrated post.
Is this considered checked baggage, carry on, or a personal item? My head is spinning!
@Not_Ken_M No that's video. The platter spins on this.
this is amazing for the price. i got one for my daughter last time it was up and i just bought another one. rechargeable battery amazing. can't go wrong for the price.
I got one of these last time. I'm no audiophile, but for thrift store/ yard sale/ ebay records it seems to be just fine so far. And it's fun!
got one last time. Great fun spinning the old discs. Not bad sound even without attaching speakers. Gonna get one as a gift for who knows!!!
I wish I had bought one of these instead of the regular, sit-on-the-shelf style. Anybody else having severe quality issues with these units? Bought two units and they are both defective (and in different ways).
Ion customer service has not been responsive...
