I'm BACK! and I'm MOVING!
17Hey all,
It’s been a while (I missed the exchange) but I wanted to get some ideas and input from you all as my family has a life changing event coming up very soon. We are moving from Raleigh, NC to San Diego, CA! As excited as we are we’re also very nervous. We don’t know anyone in San Diego nor do we know where to go or what to see. Worst of all, I don’t know where to find the best beer.
So, being the well traveled and intelligent group you are I was hoping someone might have some advice.
Background: We’ve never made a move this large but we’re trying to get rid of most of the stuff we’ve built up. We’re moving with 2 small dogs, and no children (yet). My wife will be teaching at USD (our reason for moving) and I’ll be transferring offices in my current company.
Any information would be helpful as I have never been to San Diego and we do not know anyone there!

I grew up in San Diego, but haven’t lived there in decades. What a great place, we go back to visit family there.
Beer:
@daveinwarsh Stone’s good. I like Ballast Point but they just sold out. Duck Foot, Green Flash, and Longship are nice. 32 North and White Labs are also lovely. We have distilleries cropping up all over the place now, and Malahat has some awesome Rum and a decent bourbon.
There’s also hundreds of other breweries worth trying! HOORAY FOR BEER!
@DaveInSoCal Thanks!
I really need to spend more time when we go down there.
Seems like we fly down, spend most all the time visiting & leave.
Congrats! If you are looking for beer, San Diego is an incredible place to try out all sorts of amazing breweries. In November is San Diego Beer Week, I am dying to check that out.
I went to school in San Diego. Nice place. The weather changes a lot as you move from the coast. Earthquakes can be fun, brush fires too.

letstaco.com has yummy food, but the line can get long.
@Ignorant One of the first things I did in San Diego was get food poisoning at Jack-in-the-box.
@sammydog01 you got the official welcome!
@sammydog01 All the way to San Diego to get food poisoning? You can get that at your local Jack-in-the-box.
@ACraigL If I had a local Jack-in-the-box I would have known to never eat there.
@sammydog01
@Ignorant I read that in Mario’s voice saying “Letsa Go!”
@sammydog01 I have gotten food poisoning in the greater San Diego area at least three times! Never at a Jack-in-the-Box, though. Not even a Carl’s Jr. It alternates with catching a terrible cold on the flight there. Happily all this began after the deaths of both my grandparents who lived there, so I never infected anyone.
Welcome to California. North Los Angeles County here. Spend a fair amount of time in SD. @daveinsocal maybe can advise a bit better.
@connorbush We’re going to have to do a Left Coast meh meetup one of these days.
@DaveInSoCal brilliant idea. I’d attend!
I’m all over this one! Let me get sorted out here (running some errands) and I’ll get you my phone number somehow. I shall be the most mediocre guide you’ve ever had. What area are you moving to?
@RedHot Email me at humbledavereviews at Gmail.
Depends on what you like
Try Modern Times if you like both coffee and beer. They roast their own coffee and brew the beer. People I know say it’s a marriage made in heaven.
Not a Sin Diego but live a bit north of their. California born and bred.
I’ve never been to CA, tho I’ll probably go one day as I have a few friends there.
Try not to die (the whole earthquake thing with falling into the ocean, plus it seems that so many things that are perfectly healthy elsewhere cause cancer in CA).
Best of luck and all. I hope the move goes smoothly and that your worst problem is so minor that you simply don’t even care.
Oh man, you are going to LOVE traffic in the triangle of death. It’s awesome.
Really though, I’ve been gone from CA too long. San Diego is a beautiful place to live. Prone to fires. Decent weather. Great food. Lots and lots of things to do for everyone. You’ll dig it.
@Thumperchick I loved watching the weatherman on TV. If it rained he was out there. If it snowed in the mountains he was out there. If the grunions were running he was on the beach at midnight. And that was back before Jim Cantore. Anything for a break from “70 and sunny”.
I’ve moved out of California twice. I’ve moved to California three times. The place as a certain pull on you once you get a taste. Enjoy!
I made the opposite move in early 2011, though I moved from Garden Grove (not far) to Raleigh.
Sounds like a lot of good advice on places to check out, I would only add that the Gaslamp District is nice for a date. Good luck on your move! Fortnight, Brueprint, Aviator, Lone Rider, and the like will all miss your patronage, but I’ll do my best to help make up for it!
Not sure if you are traveling by car across the country but if so, http://www.petswelcome.com/ is a great way to plan your trip so that you have pet friendly hotels along the way.
@mehbee good advice…all La Quinta hotels allow dogs to stay free …when son moved back from CA ( cost too high to live there, buy a house and raise a family) he and his wife and baby moved to Austin area. They had two dogs so they stayed at La Quintas on the way back from the west coast.
The first couple of weeks I lived in San Diego there was a grunion run and red tuna crab invasion. Creepy.

@sammydog01 Dude, don’t step on the crabs!
@sammydog01 I can tell he was being careful. I’m sure he didn’t step on any crabs.
If you happen to need a morning jolt, the best coffee (for whole-bean, brew-it-yourself snobs) is the San Diego House in Old Town. They always have some brewed there too, but best whole bean coffee I’ve found. Also, they have tea, which my spouse is into…
We visited old friends in San Diego a couple years ago. We loved it. If you can afford to live there and don’t have to spend a quarter of your waking hours in traffic, I’m sure you’ll love it too.
You’ll want to not drink the tap water. It’s horrible. Mike said it’s the water at the ass end of the Colorado and it tastes like it.
This is pretty obvious, but spend some time at Balboa Park. My favorite part was the organ concert. They’ve been having free organ concerts there every Sunday for the past 100+ years.
If you like Tiki, go to False Idol. It’s Martin Cate’s latest project. There’s no one better at Tiki and the immersive experience.
We’re going down to visit our friends again in August. The organ concert, False Idol, and going to Petco to see the Giants play the Padres are the three must-do items on my list. (Yes, they’ll be the two last-place teams in the NL West but I bought the tickets before the season started.)
Their zoo was the best when I was a kid. That was 30 years ago though, so, who knows anymore.
Good! Get you on to the west coast! This town ain’t big enough for the both of us.
I moved from San Diego to Raleigh 10 years ago because a studio apartment is $7,328 per month out there. Great place for singles but impossible for middle class families to afford. But hey, Mexico and certain death are just a few miles away. And seals. Fucking seals everywhere.
Wow be ready for high costs…good luck on your move though
Eastie to Westie?! I will reserve comment on that, but congratulations on your exciting life change. Best of luck.
